Qi2 is an open wireless-charging standard; MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic charging system and accessory ecosystem. They overlap because Apple contributed the magnetic technology used in Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile. The practical choice depends on your exact iPhone, the Qi2 or MagSafe charger generation, and the USB-C power adapter behind it—not on the label alone.

Qi2 and MagSafe at a glance

Question Qi2 MagSafe
What is it? A Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) standard for interoperable wireless charging. Apple’s magnetic charging system, charger line, and accessory ecosystem.
Magnetic alignment Yes, when the product is certified for Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile (MPP). Yes, on compatible iPhone and charger combinations.
Who controls the specification? The WPC, with certification testing by independent laboratories. Apple controls the MagSafe system and its accessory requirements.
Peak tier relevant to current products Original Qi2: 15W. Qi2 25W: the newer v2.2.1 tier. Up to 25W on particular iPhone, charger, and adapter combinations; lower limits apply to other models.
Phone compatibility Depends on the phone’s Qi2 support. A magnetic-looking charger is not automatically Qi2-certified. Depends on the iPhone family and the specific MagSafe charger generation.
Accessory range Cross-brand magnetic stands, pads, vehicle mounts, and battery accessories that carry Qi2 certification. Apple’s MagSafe accessories and compatible third-party products.

The WPC describes Qi2’s MPP as based on MagSafe technology contributed by Apple. That makes Qi2 and MagSafe related, but they remain different certification and product ecosystems. Read the charger’s certification and your iPhone’s support information together.

What Qi2 actually is

Qi (pronounced “chee”) is the WPC’s open standard for wireless power. Apple says iPhone 8 and later can charge with Qi-certified chargers. Qi2 arrived as part of Qi v2.0 and added a magnetic profile designed to center a phone and charger consistently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Qi v2.0 has two profiles

  • Magnetic Power Profile (MPP): the magnetic profile branded as Qi2. It provides magnetic attachment and alignment when the product is certified for it.
  • Extended Power Profile (EPP): a higher-capability Qi profile that does not require magnets.

Therefore, the words “Qi v2.0” by themselves do not prove that a charger will hold an iPhone magnetically. Look for the Qi2 name or the Qi2 MPP certification mark. The WPC’s current standards page explains the profiles and maintains its certification information at wirelesspowerconsortium.com/standards/qi-wireless-charging/.

Qi2 15W and Qi2 25W are separate tiers

The first Qi2 products launched in November 2023 at 15W. On July 23, 2025, the WPC announced Qi2 25W under version 2.2.1, describing it as nearly 70% more power than original Qi2. A Qi2 25W label does not mean every iPhone will accept 25W; the phone and the charger-and-adapter combination still set the ceiling.

The WPC says Qi2 25W can charge a smartphone battery from 0 to 50% in about 30 minutes in its general description. That is a broad Qi2 statement, not an iPhone-specific time guarantee. Battery capacity, temperature, software limits, case thickness, and the adapter can all change the result.

What MagSafe means on an iPhone

MagSafe combines wireless induction with a ring of magnets that helps the phone and charger meet at the intended center. Apple describes the alignment as providing faster, more efficient charging when the correct iPhone and charger are used. MagSafe also covers a broader accessory system: cases, wallets, stands, mounts, and battery accessories designed around that magnetic position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MagSafe is not a single speed. Apple’s current instructions say delivered power varies with the iPhone model, adapter wattage, charger version, and system conditions. A charger advertised as MagSafe can therefore deliver different results on different iPhones, and a 30W adapter is useful only where Apple specifies that combination.

How wireless charging works

Both systems use magnetic induction. A coil in the charging puck creates an alternating magnetic field; a coil in the iPhone converts that field into electrical power for the battery-management system. Alignment matters because the coils transfer energy most efficiently when they are centered.

Qi2’s MPP and MagSafe use magnets to make that centering repeatable. The magnets do not create extra electrical power by themselves. They reduce misalignment, help prevent intermittent charging, and make a phone easier to use on a stand or in a vehicle mount.

Wireless power is negotiated and monitored rather than delivered at a fixed rate continuously. The phone may reduce input as the battery fills, the device warms, or another system limit is reached. Consequently, an advertised maximum wattage is a peak capability, not a promised sustained rate or a guaranteed charge time.

Which iPhones work with Qi and magnetic charging?

Qi charging compatibility is broader

Apple says iPhone 8 or later works with Qi-certified chargers, including non-magnetic charging mats. This is the broad baseline for wireless charging. The phone can charge even when it has no magnetic ring or when the charger uses the non-magnetic Qi profile.

Magnetic attachment is model-specific

Magnetic alignment applies only to the iPhone families Apple identifies as compatible with MagSafe or Qi2 magnetic charging. Cases, camera bumps, and non-MagSafe models can prevent a reliable connection. Check Apple’s current compatibility information for the exact model before buying a magnetic stand or expecting the phone to stay attached.

Apple’s published MagSafe limits as of October 1, 2026

Apple’s support page gives the following “up to” figures for its specified MagSafe charger part numbers and adapter requirements. These are model-specific ceilings, not universal MagSafe speeds:

iPhone models listed by Apple Maximum listed power Adapter and condition stated by Apple
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max; iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max; iPhone 17; iPhone 16 Plus; iPhone 16 Pro Max Up to 25W A 30W-or-greater adapter meeting Apple’s voltage/current requirements, with a supported MagSafe charger part number.
iPhone Air Up to 20W Use the charger and adapter conditions Apple lists for that model.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Up to 22.5W Use the charger and adapter conditions Apple lists for that model.
iPhone 17e, iPhone 15, and earlier models Up to 15W The specified MagSafe charger with a 20W-or-greater USB-C adapter.

Apple also notes that connected USB accessories can impose additional restrictions. Consult the full instructions at Apple Support’s MagSafe Charger guide when your phone, charger, or adapter differs from these combinations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s store listing for the current MagSafe Charger identifies it as Qi2 25W and Qi certified. That listing says up to 25W requires a 30W adapter, up to 15W applies to iPhone 12 or later with MagSafe when paired with a 20W adapter, and Qi charging on iPhone 8 or later is up to 7.5W. Because those figures depend on the exact product and model, use the listing and support page together rather than applying one number to every iPhone: Apple MagSafe Charger (2 m).

Qi2 versus MagSafe: the differences that affect a purchase

1. Standard versus ecosystem

Qi2 is intended to let certified chargers from different manufacturers interoperate. MagSafe is Apple’s system, with Apple-defined charger behavior and a large accessory ecosystem. A Qi2 charger can be a practical cross-brand choice, while a MagSafe charger is the more direct route when you want Apple’s specified model-and-adapter combinations.

2. Certification is not the same as “magnetic”

Magnets can be added to a product without proving that its power behavior has passed Qi2 testing. The WPC says Qi-certified products undergo independent testing for safety and interoperability. Verify the Qi2 certification mark or entry in the WPC database instead of relying on packaging language such as “magnetic wireless charger.”

3. The phone sets the real limit

A Qi2 25W charger cannot make an iPhone that accepts 15W draw 25W. Conversely, an iPhone capable of a higher tier still needs the appropriate charger generation and a sufficiently powerful USB-C adapter. The weakest link—phone, charging puck, adapter, case, temperature, or software—controls the session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Accessory behavior differs

Both ecosystems can support magnetic stands and mounts, but attachment strength, case fit, and accessory certification vary. A case designed for MagSafe may physically attach to a Qi2 MPP charger, yet the charger’s electrical certification and the phone’s supported rate remain separate questions. For a vehicle mount or bedside stand, confirm both the magnetic fit and the power specification.

How to choose the right charger

  1. Identify the exact iPhone model. Read the model in Settings or on the device packaging. Do not rely on the product family name alone; Apple’s listed limits differ within a generation.
  2. Decide whether you need magnetic attachment. For a flat pad, ordinary Qi may be sufficient. For a stand, alignment aid, or mount, select a product explicitly certified for Qi2 MPP or a MagSafe charger compatible with your model.
  3. Check the charger generation. Distinguish original 15W Qi2 from Qi2 25W v2.2.1. Confirm that the iPhone can use the higher tier before paying for it.
  4. Match the USB-C adapter. For Apple’s listed 25W MagSafe combinations, use a 30W-or-greater adapter meeting Apple’s requirements. For the listed 15W combinations, Apple specifies a 20W-or-greater adapter. The puck’s maximum rating cannot compensate for an underpowered adapter.
  5. Verify certification and included parts. Check for Qi2 certification, a supported MagSafe charger part number where relevant, and whether the USB-C adapter is included. A charger sold without an adapter may require a separate purchase.
  6. Check case and accessory compatibility. Thick, metal, or battery cases can reduce or interrupt charging. Confirm that the case has a compatible magnetic ring and that cards or other inserts will not sit between the phone and charger.

A useful buying note is to start with a Qi2-certified wireless charger if you want cross-brand compatibility, or the Apple MagSafe Charger if you want Apple’s published MagSafe combinations. Pair either with a suitable 30W USB-C power adapter only when your model’s support information calls for it.

Setup: getting a reliable charging session

For a Qi2 or MagSafe puck

  1. Connect the charger to the required USB-C power adapter and plug the adapter into mains power.
  2. Remove cards, security badges, passports, and key fobs from the space between the phone and charger. Magnets may damage magnetic strips, while the field can affect RFID chips.
  3. Place the iPhone on the center of a flat pad, or bring the magnetic ring together with the charger until it snaps into position.
  4. Wait for the charging indicator and check that the phone is not sliding off a stand or mount.
  5. If you use a case, test charging with the case installed. If charging is intermittent or unusually slow, remove the case and retest before replacing hardware.

For a non-magnetic Qi mat

  1. Connect the mat to its specified adapter.
  2. Place the iPhone 8 or later face-up over the mat’s marked coil, following the charger maker’s placement instructions.
  3. Move the phone slightly if the charging indicator does not appear; a non-magnetic mat cannot correct misalignment automatically.

Apple says wired power takes precedence when a cable is connected. Disconnect the cable if you are testing wireless charging, and keep ventilation around the phone and charger.

Heat, cases, and charging speed

Wireless charging generates heat in both the charger and the phone. Apple says software may limit charging above 80% when the battery becomes too warm. Charging can also slow in a thick or metal case, or when a battery case is attached. These behaviors protect the battery and electronics; they are not evidence that Qi2 or MagSafe has failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Move the charger away from direct sun and hot surfaces.
  • Remove a thick, metal, or battery case if the phone becomes hot or charging repeatedly pauses.
  • Do not place cards, passports, key fobs, or security badges between the phone and the charging surface.
  • Use the adapter wattage specified for the iPhone and charger combination.
  • Expect the rate to taper as the battery approaches full; peak wattage is normally a short portion of a charging session.

Apple’s general wireless-charging guidance covers placement, cases, heat, and magnetic items at How to charge your iPhone wirelessly.

Troubleshooting checklist

The phone does not charge

  • Confirm the adapter is plugged in and supplies the charger’s required power.
  • Center the phone again. On a magnetic charger, remove anything between the rings; on a flat mat, reposition the phone over the marked coil.
  • Remove the case and test once. If it works without the case, replace the case with a thinner compatible model.
  • Disconnect a wired cable and USB accessories that may change Apple’s charging behavior.
  • Try a different wall outlet or USB-C adapter before replacing the phone or charger.

The phone charges slowly

  • Check whether the charger is original 15W Qi2, Qi2 25W, or a MagSafe model with a lower model-specific limit.
  • Compare the adapter with Apple’s requirement for your iPhone. A higher-wattage puck cannot overcome an underpowered adapter.
  • Check for heat, direct sunlight, a thick case, or a battery case.
  • Remember that charging normally tapers near full and may be limited above 80% at elevated temperature.

The phone slips off a stand

  • Check that the phone or case has a compatible magnetic ring and that the stand is certified for the intended system.
  • Remove a wallet, card holder, or other accessory between the phone and charger.
  • For a vehicle mount, verify that the mount is designed to hold the phone’s weight and case; magnetic attachment alone does not guarantee mechanical security on rough roads.

What the certification numbers mean

The WPC says more than 13,000 Qi Certified products are on the market; that is a WPC-published count, not an independently audited total. Certification is still a useful filter because it indicates that a product has undergone the WPC’s safety and interoperability testing.

Look for three separate details on a product page:

  • Profile: Qi2 MPP for magnetic Qi2 charging, or a non-magnetic Qi profile.
  • Power tier: 15W Qi2 or Qi2 25W v2.2.1, where stated.
  • Compatibility claim: the exact iPhone models and required adapter, not just a generic “works with iPhone” statement.

Those details prevent the most common mistake: assuming that a magnet, a high wattage printed on the box, or the word “Qi” automatically guarantees MagSafe attachment or maximum-speed charging.

Bottom line: which should you buy?

Choose a Qi2-certified charger when you want an open, cross-brand magnetic standard and your iPhone supports the relevant Qi2 behavior. Choose Apple’s MagSafe Charger when you want Apple’s specified magnetic system and are prepared to match the charger generation and adapter to your model. If you only need a bedside pad and do not care about magnetic alignment, a Qi-certified charger may be enough for an iPhone 8 or later.

Before checkout, verify the exact iPhone model, the Qi2 generation or MagSafe charger part number, the adapter wattage, and the case. That four-part check matters more than choosing “Qi2” or “MagSafe” as a label.
