Its defining change is the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP), which lets a certified transmitter and receiver attach and align magnetically. Later revisions add support for higher power, including the Qi2 25W label, but 25W is a specification capability—not a promise that every Qi2 phone or charger reaches that rate.
Support is model-specific. To determine whether a phone, case, pad or stand will work together, check the exact model in the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) Certified Products database and then confirm the maker’s specification for charging rate and accessories. A device marked Qi2 Ready may require one particular approved accessory to deliver the certified magnetic connection.

Qi and Qi2 in one sentence
Qi is the earlier WPC wireless-charging standard; Qi2 is the newer family built around Qi specification version 2.0 and its Magnetic Power Profile. Qi2 adds controlled magnetic attachment and alignment, while subsequent revisions expand alignment options and power capabilities. The logo on a product is not enough to establish its speed or compatibility: certification applies to a specific receiver or transmitter, and the phone’s own specification determines the rate it can accept.

What Qi means
Qi is a certification system for inductive wireless-power transmitters (the pad or stand) and receivers (usually inside a phone or accessory). A certified pair is designed to negotiate power safely rather than relying on a manufacturer-specific implementation. WPC describes certified chargers and receivers as interoperable, including products made to earlier Qi versions.

That interoperability does not mean every physical combination performs identically. The receiver can limit power, a case can interfere with the charging area, and a transmitter can offer less power than the phone is able to accept. Qi certification establishes that the product passed the applicable WPC tests; it does not turn every Qi device into a Qi2 device or guarantee a particular wattage.
What Qi2 changed
Magnetic Power Profile (MPP)
WPC dates Qi specification v2.0 to April 2023 and identifies MPP as its central change. MPP adds magnetic attachment and alignment between the transmitter and receiver. Instead of placing a phone somewhere on a broad charging surface and hoping the coils line up, a compatible magnetic system guides the receiver to the intended position and helps hold it there.
Alignment is a functional change, not merely a convenience feature. A phone that shifts on an ordinary pad can stop charging or transfer power inefficiently. A certified MPP combination is designed around a defined magnetic interface, but the strength of the attachment and the practical result still depend on the exact phone, case, accessory and charger.
Automatic Alignment Profile and accessory-cover testing
WPC’s September 2024 Qi v2.1 update lists support for Automatic Alignment Profile transmitters, magnetic accessory covers, and testing for mechanical obstructions near a phone’s charging area. These additions address products that need a predictable magnetic relationship without assuming every receiver is built the same way.
The revision also explains why a product can carry a Qi2-related label yet need a particular case or cover. Certification is performed on a tested combination, so an accessory can be part of the approved configuration rather than an optional cosmetic extra.
Higher-power and control changes
WPC dates Qi v2.2 to April 2025. It lists support for up to 25 W, power modes intended to optimize transfer with USB-C adapters, and additional power-control and foreign-object-detection changes. These are capabilities in the specification. A manufacturer can certify a product at a lower level, and a phone can accept less power than the transmitter is capable of sending.
Qi, Qi2, Qi2 Ready and Qi2 25W labels
| Label | What it identifies | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Qi | The earlier generation of WPC wireless-power certification. WPC describes certified Qi receivers and chargers as interoperable, including products using earlier Qi versions. | It does not indicate magnetic attachment, Qi2 certification or a particular charging rate. |
| Qi2 | WPC associates the Qi2 logo with Qi specification v2.0 and the Magnetic Power Profile. | It does not mean every Qi2 product charges at the same wattage, and it does not by itself identify a phone’s maximum input. |
| Qi2 Ready | A receiver-and-accessory combination certification associated with Qi v2.1. The receiver may rely on a separately approved magnetic accessory. | It does not certify every case, cover or magnetic accessory. The manufacturer’s approved combination matters. |
| Qi2 25W | WPC’s branding for Qi specification v2.2 with MPP, introduced in the July 23, 2025 release. | It is not a universal 25W charging promise. The exact phone, transmitter, adapter and thermal conditions determine actual charging. |
What “Qi2 25W” really means
“Up to 25 W” is the named capability WPC lists for Qi v2.2. A charger may be certified for that capability while a particular phone is certified for a lower rate. Conversely, a phone advertised as Qi2 25W still needs a transmitter and power adapter that support the required mode.

In its July 23, 2025 release, WPC characterized Qi2 25W as delivering nearly 70% more power than original Qi2. That percentage is WPC’s statement in that 2025 release, not an independently measured result and not a guarantee for every product carrying the label.
The same limited-launch release said that fourteen devices—receivers and transmitters—had completed Qi2 25W certification testing. That was a dated launch figure, not a current count of all certified products. For an up-to-date answer, use the searchable WPC database rather than relying on a launch announcement.

Which devices support each standard?
There is no single, permanently complete device list in the official material. Do not infer support from a manufacturer name, operating system or a phone’s ability to stick to a metal accessory. Verify the exact model and the exact charger.
Use the WPC Certified Products database
- Open the WPC Certified Products database.
- Search the phone, receiver, charging pad or stand by its precise model identifier, not only its retail name.
- Read the certification entry to determine whether it is Qi, Qi2, Qi2 Ready or Qi2 25W, and whether it is a receiver or transmitter.
- Check the listed power capability and certification details for both sides of the intended combination.
WPC says certification involves independent laboratory testing and identifies its searchable database as the verification route. A retailer listing or a generic “magnetic wireless charging” description is not a substitute for the certification entry.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Confirm the maker’s specification
After locating the certification, read the phone and accessory maker’s own technical specification. Look for the maximum wireless-input rate, whether a case or cover is required, and which adapters or cables are specified. If the phone is labeled Qi2 Ready, find the maker’s approved accessory list and match the exact receiver-accessory combination.
Record the complete charging chain
For a reliable comparison, write down four items: the phone or receiver model, the case or magnetic accessory, the transmitter model, and the USB-C power adapter. The weakest or least capable item controls the result. A 25W transmitter cannot make a receiver that accepts 15W charge at 25W, and a high-rate receiver cannot obtain its top rate from an underpowered adapter.
How certification affects compatibility
Certification is attached to a particular product entry, not to an entire brand family. Two phones sold under one series name can have different receiver certifications, and two visually similar pads can support different profiles. Independent laboratory testing gives the database entry its value, but it does not remove the need to match the receiver and transmitter records.

Think of the setup as a chain: the phone’s receiver, its case or cover, the charging transmitter, and the USB-C adapter feeding that transmitter. Any one of those can set the practical limit. The phone determines how much power it can accept; the transmitter determines which certified mode it can provide; the adapter must supply the input the transmitter requires; and the case must leave the charging area unobstructed.

Will a Qi2 charger work with my phone?
Sometimes, but the label alone cannot answer the question. A Qi2 charger is a transmitter; your phone is the receiver. The phone must support a compatible Qi or Qi2 profile, and the physical case or accessory must not obstruct the charging area.
| Phone or receiver status | What to expect | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Certified Qi2 receiver | Magnetic attachment is available when paired with a compatible MPP transmitter and suitable case or accessory. | Exact model certification, supported rate and any case requirements. |
| Qi2 Ready receiver | Magnetic Qi2 behavior depends on the specifically approved accessory combination. | The manufacturer’s named accessory and the certification entry for that pairing. |
| Earlier Qi receiver | It may charge on a Qi2 transmitter, but WPC’s Qi v2.0 history says Qi2 products are not required to be fully backward compatible with Qi 1.x. | Exact certified transmitter-receiver pairing; do not assume magnetic attachment or the Qi2 rate. |
| No certified wireless receiver | A Qi2 pad cannot add wireless-charging hardware to the phone. | Whether a compatible receiver accessory is available and approved by the maker. |
WPC’s general certification guidance says certified chargers and receivers work together, including earlier versions. Its specific Qi v2.0 history page cautions that full backward compatibility with Qi 1.x is not required. Those statements are not contradictory: they mean you should check the certified combination instead of treating every cross-generation pairing as guaranteed.
Comparison by buying scenario
| Your priority | Usually the better fit | Checks before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest-cost charging for an established Qi phone | A certified Qi transmitter | Phone input limit, receiver certification and case clearance. |
| Phone that should stay centered on a stand or mount | Qi2 with MPP | Exact Qi2 receiver, compatible magnetic case and transmitter certification. |
| Phone marketed as Qi2 Ready | Qi2 transmitter plus the named approved accessory | Receiver-accessory pairing, accessory model number and supported rate. |
| Highest available Qi2 power | Qi2 25W-certified transmitter and receiver | Both devices’ 25W support, suitable USB-C adapter and thermal expectations. |
| Mixed household of older and newer phones | A transmitter whose certification entry covers the intended receivers | Check each phone individually; do not assume every Qi-to-Qi2 pairing works. |
How to choose a Qi or Qi2 charger
1. Start with the phone’s certified input
Find the phone’s maximum wireless-charging rate in its technical specification and certification record. If the phone is limited to a lower rate, buying a transmitter advertised with a higher ceiling will not raise the phone’s limit.
2. Decide whether magnetic alignment is necessary
Choose Qi2 when the ability to attach and align the phone is important—for example, on a stand, in a vehicle mount or when the phone must remain centered while notifications are visible. A conventional Qi pad can still be appropriate for a phone or accessory that does not need magnetic attachment.
3. Check the case and accessory path
Use a case identified by the phone maker as compatible with the certified setup. For Qi2 Ready receivers, treat the approved accessory as part of the product specification, not as a universal substitute for any magnetic case.
4. Match the adapter and cable
Qi v2.2 includes power modes designed to optimize transfer with USB-C adapters. Use the adapter rating specified for the transmitter and avoid assuming that a high-wattage adapter automatically activates the transmitter’s highest wireless mode.

The phone does not attach magnetically
Check whether the phone is actually Qi2 or Qi2 Ready. A Qi-only receiver may charge without magnetic attachment. If it is Qi2 Ready, install the exact approved accessory and remove a case that is not listed as compatible.
Charging starts and stops
Re-center the phone, inspect the case for raised or metallic parts near the coil, and remove cards or other objects between the phone and transmitter. Then test with the phone bare or with the approved case. If the problem persists, compare the transmitter and receiver model numbers in the WPC database.
Charging is slower than expected
Check the phone’s supported rate first, then the transmitter’s certified rate and the USB-C adapter specification. Heat, battery-management behavior and simultaneous phone use can also reduce the observed rate; the printed maximum is a capability under the certified operating conditions, not a constant reading.
A Qi2 charger works with one phone but not another
That is possible because certification and supported profiles are model-specific. Confirm whether the second phone is Qi, Qi2 or Qi2 Ready, and whether its case or accessory is part of the approved configuration.
The product listing says “magnetic” but has no Qi2 information
Magnetic attachment alone does not prove WPC Qi2 certification. Ask for the exact certification record and the receiver or transmitter model number. Without those details, treat the charging rate and cross-generation behavior as unconfirmed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPitfalls to avoid
- Confusing magnetic hardware with Qi2: A magnet can hold a phone without the product being WPC-certified Qi2.
- Reading 25W as a guaranteed output: It is a specification ceiling or capability. The phone, transmitter, adapter and operating conditions still matter.
- Ignoring Qi2 Ready’s accessory requirement: The receiver may have been tested only with one approved cover or accessory.
- Assuming version numbers guarantee backward compatibility: Qi v2.0 products are not required to be fully compatible with Qi 1.x products.
- Searching only by a retail name: Use the precise model identifier in the WPC database.
- Using an unsuitable adapter: A high-wattage adapter does not automatically enable the transmitter’s highest mode; follow the transmitter specification.
- Leaving objects on the coil: Cards, keys, coins and other conductive items can interfere with charging and trigger safety controls.
A five-minute compatibility checklist
- Write down the exact phone model and the exact transmitter model.
- Check both entries in the WPC Certified Products database.
- Identify whether each is Qi, Qi2, Qi2 Ready or Qi2 25W, and whether it is a receiver or transmitter.
- Record the phone’s maximum wireless-input rate.
- For Qi2 Ready, obtain the manufacturer’s named accessory and verify its model.
- Confirm the USB-C adapter and cable meet the transmitter’s requirements.
- Test with the approved case installed and with conductive objects removed.
What to remember when comparing Qi and Qi2
- Qi2’s major consumer-visible change is MPP magnetic attachment and alignment.
- Qi2 25W is a later specification capability and label, not a universal charging rate.
- Qi2 Ready identifies a tested receiver-accessory combination; the approved accessory matters.
- Qi v2.0 is not required to be fully backward compatible with Qi 1.x, so verify exact pairings.
- The WPC Certified Products database and the manufacturer’s model specification are the authoritative checks for support, rate and required accessories.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Qi2 just a faster version of Qi?
No. Qi2’s defining change is the Magnetic Power Profile, which adds magnetic attachment and alignment. Later revisions add higher-power capability, but speed is not the only difference.

Will any Qi2 charger charge an older Qi phone?
Not necessarily. WPC says certified chargers and receivers are generally interoperable, but Qi v2.0 products are not required to be fully backward compatible with Qi 1.x. Check the exact transmitter and receiver records.
Does Qi2 mean 15W or 25W charging?
The Qi2 label alone does not specify one universal rate. Qi2 25W is the branding for a later Qi v2.2 capability; each phone and charger can support a lower rate.
What does Qi2 Ready mean?
It identifies a receiver-and-accessory combination certified under Qi v2.1. The receiver may need the manufacturer’s specific approved magnetic cover or accessory.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCan a magnetic case turn a Qi phone into Qi2?
A magnetic case by itself does not establish Qi2 certification. Verify the receiver, accessory and transmitter in the WPC database and follow the maker’s approved-combination list.
Why is my Qi2 25W charger slower than 25W?
The phone may accept less power, the transmitter may be certified at a lower level, the USB-C adapter may be insufficient, or heat and phone activity may reduce the observed rate.
How do I verify whether a phone supports Qi2?
Search its precise model identifier in WPC’s Certified Products database, then confirm the manufacturer’s specification for the wireless-input rate, case requirements and any Qi2 Ready accessory.
Is a product labeled “magnetic wireless charging” automatically Qi2?
No. Magnetic attachment is not proof of WPC Qi2 certification. Request the exact certification record and model number before relying on its speed or compatibility.
The Bottom Line
Choose Qi2 for its certified magnetic alignment, not simply for a larger wattage number. Treat Qi2 25W as a later capability, and treat Qi2 Ready as a tested receiver-accessory combination. For any purchase, verify the exact phone, case, transmitter and USB-C adapter in the WPC Certified Products database and the manufacturer’s specifications.
