Python print() End Parameter: How to Change Line Endings

Use print(..., end=...) to control what Python writes after each call. Learn when to use a newline, a space, an empty string, or a custom ending.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pass a string with the end keyword argument to choose what Python writes after a print() call. For example, print('Hello', end='!') writes Hello!; print('Hello', end='') writes Hello without adding a newline. If you omit end, Python uses 'n' and moves to a new line. The Python built-in functions reference documents the behavior.

What does the end parameter do?

print() writes its objects, separated by sep, and then writes the string specified by end. Its documented signature is print(*objects, sep=' ', end='n', file=None, flush=False). The sep, end, file, and flush arguments must be supplied by keyword when you provide them.

Use end to control what follows the complete output of one call. Use sep to control what goes between multiple objects in that same call:

  • print('red', 'blue', sep=' / ') writes red / blue, followed by the default newline.
  • print('red', 'blue', end='!') writes red blue!; the space between the objects is still the default sep.

The two parameters solve different formatting problems; changing end does not change the separator between objects. See the built-in functions reference for their definitions.

How to choose a line ending

Desired result Argument Example
Start the next output on a new line Omit end, or use end='n' print('Hello')
Continue on the same line with a space end=' ' print('Hello', end=' ')
Continue on the same line with no added characters end='' print('Hello', end='')
Append a custom string Set end to that string print('Loading', end='...')

The value of end is written after all objects in that call. A later print() call can therefore continue on the same line, add its own ending, or use the default newline.

Examples you can run

Print consecutive values on one line

Set end=' ' on each call that should leave a visible space after its output. The Python tutorial uses this pattern to print successive values on one line and then finish the row with another print() call.

for number in range(1, 4):
    print(number, end=' ')
print('done')

Output:

1 2 3 done

Join separate messages without a separator

print('No newline', end='')
print(' — continued on the same line')

Output:

No newline — continued on the same line

Use a custom ending

print('Loading', end='...')
print('done')

Output:

Loading...done

Because the first call ends with three periods rather than a newline, done appears immediately after them.

Write only the ending

With no objects, print() writes the ending string alone. For example, print(end='—') writes one em dash. The Python reference states: “If no objects are given, print() will just write end.”

Rules for the end value

  • Pass it by keyword: write end=' ', not as a positional argument. Positional values after the objects are additional objects to print, not a way to set end.
  • Use a string or None: the reference specifies that sep and end must be strings or None. None selects the default ending, a newline.
  • Remember that empty means no added ending: end='' is an empty string, not a request for a blank line.
  • Distinguish the written string from file newline conversion: end determines the string passed to the output stream. A text file object’s newline settings can translate newline characters while writing; that behavior belongs to the stream, not to print()‘s choice of end.

By default, print() writes to sys.stdout. You can direct output to a file-like object with file=; it must provide a write(string) method. For a binary-mode file, the reference says to use file.write() instead. These details are in the Python built-in functions reference.

Troubleshooting

The next output appears on the same line

Check whether the earlier call used end='', a space, or another string without a newline. Add end='n' to that call or make a subsequent call that writes a newline.

There is an unexpected space between values

That space may come from the default sep=' ' between multiple objects, rather than from end. Set sep explicitly if you want a different separator, or pass the combined text as one object.

Python rejects the argument

Pass the setting as a keyword, such as end='!', and provide a string or None. An integer or other unsupported value is not a valid ending.

A newline appears different in a text file

Check how the file was opened and configured. print() supplies the ending string, while the text stream can handle newline translation. For binary output, use the file object’s write method as the reference advises.

If you need website screenshots rather than Python console line endings, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A Python request can save a screenshot like this; replace the example URL with the page you want to capture and use your API key:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
