For most people starting data science, learn Python first. It offers a broad mix of data-manipulation, visualization, machine-learning and integration tools, plus a large body of learning material. Choose Julia instead when your likely work centers on custom numerical algorithms, simulation or other performance-sensitive scientific software and you are willing to learn a more distributed package ecosystem. The right answer depends on the work you need to do, not on a universal claim that one language is faster or better.
Python or Julia: the short answer
Python is the practical default for a first data-science language when you want to move between notebooks, databases, dashboards, machine-learning libraries and existing applications. A 2025 task-based comparison in Data Jamboree: A Party of Open-Source Software Solving Real-World Data Science Problems highlighted Python’s strengths in library availability, data manipulation and visualization. That project involved specific tasks and participants; it was not a representative survey of worldwide usage.

Julia is a strong alternative for scientific computing. Its language and compiler are designed to let you write high-level code that can be compiled for numerical work, reducing the need to move performance-critical sections into a separate low-level language. Julia’s official project site lists a functioning data ecosystem, including DataFrames.jl, CSV.jl, Arrow.jl, OnlineStats.jl, graph packages and ODBC database drivers.
That ecosystem is less centralized. The stable DataFrames.jl introduction explicitly warns that “the Julia data ecosystem can be a difficult space for new users to navigate.” You may need to discover separate packages for tasks that a Python learner expects to find through a familiar, integrated workflow. This is a learning and maintenance consideration, not evidence that Julia lacks the tools for data science.

If you already know Python, do not rewrite a complete pipeline merely because a benchmark favors Julia for one operation. Add Julia when a representative workload shows a meaningful bottleneck and the integration cost is justified. Python and Julia can interoperate, although wrappers, conversions and data-format boundaries add complexity.
How the two languages differ in everyday data-science work
Ecosystem and learning support
Python’s advantage is breadth and connective tissue. A typical workflow can combine tabular manipulation, plotting, machine learning, notebooks, web services and production applications in one language. Existing Python systems can usually call the same libraries used during exploration, which reduces the number of hand-offs between prototype and deployment.
Julia has the components needed for the same broad categories of work, but they are spread across the Julia package ecosystem. DataFrames.jl handles tables; CSV.jl and Arrow.jl handle common file and columnar formats; OnlineStats.jl supports streaming statistics; graph packages support network analysis; and ODBC drivers connect to databases. Package selection therefore matters more. Before committing to Julia, check that the packages for your file formats, database, model family and deployment target are maintained and compatible with your planned Julia version.
Data manipulation
Python users commonly learn pandas for tables. Julia users commonly learn DataFrames.jl. The DataFrames.jl comparison documentation is function-oriented and explicitly references pandas 1.1.0, so it should not be read as a current, version-to-version performance test. It is most useful for understanding how operations and syntax map between the ecosystems.
Both libraries support selecting columns, filtering rows, grouping, joining, reshaping and handling missing observations. The details differ enough to affect code reviews and debugging. Python arrays and most familiar Python indexing are zero-based: the first element is at position 0. Julia uses one-based indexing: the first element is at position 1. A loop, slice or translated formula can therefore be off by one if you port it mechanically.

Missing values also use different conventions. Julia’s tabular ecosystem uses the explicit missing value and associated missing-aware operations. Python data work may encounter combinations of None, NaN and newer nullable types, depending on the column and library. When moving data between languages, define how nulls, numeric not-a-number values and empty strings should be represented rather than assuming the conversion is lossless.
Visualization, machine learning and integration
Python is usually the easier choice when your project must combine many third-party tools. It is common to load data, fit a model, produce a chart, expose a prediction service and connect to an existing Python application without changing languages. This does not make Julia unsuitable; it means Python is more likely to match an organization’s established interfaces and examples.

Julia works well when the whole workflow is Julia-first or when numerical code is the central product. Mixed-language workflows are possible: a Python application can call Julia code, or Julia can call Python packages. The bridge itself becomes another dependency. You must account for data conversion, error handling, environment management, deployment packaging and the debugging boundary between languages.
Is Julia actually faster than Python?
There is no language-wide speed multiplier. Python data-science code often spends most of its time inside optimized native implementations, so the relevant comparison is between complete operations and their surrounding I/O, not between a Python for loop and a Julia loop in isolation. Julia’s just-in-time compilation can be valuable for custom numerical code, but compilation time, memory use, algorithm choice, hardware, thread count and parallelism all affect the result.
A useful illustration comes from the 2023 Journal of Statistical Software article “DataFrames.jl: Flexible and Fast Tabular Data in Julia.” In its selected test, the reported minimum over 100 runs was:

| Operation | DataFrames.jl (Julia) | pandas (Python) |
|---|---|---|
| Aggregation | 0.22 seconds | 2.09 seconds |
| Inner join | 4.17 seconds | 17.15 seconds |
| Left join | 5.51 seconds | 17.59 seconds |
Those are timings from that article’s particular data, software, machine and test design, not guarantees for every dataset or implementation. The authors note that results changed with hardware and operating system, and that the relative performance of other packages improved when more CPU cores were available. In the article’s broader cloud-benchmark summary, DataFrames.jl was generally faster than pandas and dplyr and generally slower than Polars, while comparisons with data.table and Arrow varied by operation.

Use the figures as a reason to benchmark, not as a reason to assume that all Julia programs outrun all Python programs. For a production decision, measure representative end-to-end work: data loading, parsing, joins, aggregation, model execution, serialization, startup and compilation, and the way the result is consumed by the rest of your system.
When Python is the better first language
You need a broad project mix
Start with Python if you expect to move among exploratory analysis, visualization, machine learning, automation and application integration. The language is a sensible common denominator when the exact project is not yet known.
You are joining an existing team
For a job or internship, inspect the team’s repositories, environment files, notebooks and deployment stack. The evidence summarized here does not establish a current job-market ranking for Python and Julia. A team’s actual tools and review practices are more relevant to your first choice than an unsupported claim about global popularity.
You want the shortest path through common tutorials
Python’s established workflow can reduce the time spent deciding which package supplies a basic capability. You still need to learn package versions, environments and good engineering practices, but the path from introductory examples to a working data project is often straightforward.

When Julia is worth choosing
Your core problem is custom numerical computation
Consider Julia when you will write simulation code, differential-equation models, optimization routines, scientific kernels or other algorithms that must run quickly and are not fully covered by an existing optimized library. Julia lets you express these algorithms at a high level while targeting compiled machine code.
You can validate the ecosystem for your specific work
Before choosing Julia, list the exact requirements: input formats, database drivers, visualization backend, statistical or machine-learning methods, deployment environment and expected concurrency. Confirm a maintained Julia package for each requirement. The official Julia site’s listings demonstrate that the ecosystem is real, but they do not guarantee that every niche package matches the maturity or interface you need.
You are comfortable with a different set of conventions
Julia’s one-based indexing, multiple dispatch and package layout are learnable, but they are not Python conventions with different punctuation. If you understand that the language is making different design choices, you are less likely to translate code mechanically and introduce subtle indexing or type errors.
A decision framework you can apply today
| Question | Choose Python when… | Choose Julia when… |
|---|---|---|
| What kind of work? | You need a broad mix of manipulation, visualization, machine learning and application integration. | You expect custom numerical computing, simulation or scientific software to dominate. |
| What ecosystem? | You value a widely connected workflow and many integration options. | Your target tasks are covered by Julia packages and you accept more package discovery. |
| Where is the bottleneck? | Existing optimized libraries or infrastructure already handle the expensive operations. | Your own numerical algorithm is the expensive part and compilation can help. |
| What team context? | Your team already ships Python or the role lists Python tools. | The team is Julia-first or explicitly supports Julia for its scientific workload. |
| How much bridging? | You want one established language across exploration and application code. | You can manage wrappers and conversions in a Julia-first or mixed workflow. |
How to test the choice instead of guessing
- Write down the first real deliverable. Specify the data source, transformations, model or simulation, output and deployment target. “Data science” is too broad for a meaningful language decision.
- Build a small vertical slice. Read representative data, perform the hardest transformation, run the key computation and write the result in each candidate environment. Include realistic data sizes and data types.
- Measure the whole path. Record steady-state runtime, first-run startup or compilation, peak memory, parallel execution and time spent converting data or calling another language.
- Check package and team fit. Confirm versions, documentation, maintenance, licensing requirements, database connectivity and how the code will be deployed and monitored.
- Choose the smallest change that solves the problem. Keep Python if it meets the requirement. If Julia removes a demonstrated bottleneck, introduce it for that component rather than rewriting every service.
Common mistakes when comparing Python and Julia
- Comparing language syntax instead of implementations: a Python loop is not the same test as a vectorized operation in a compiled extension.
- Quoting a benchmark without its setup: the DataFrames.jl figures above are operation-specific, use a particular test and report a minimum over 100 runs.
- Ignoring first-run costs: Julia’s compilation and Python’s import and environment costs can matter in short-lived jobs.
- Porting indexes mechanically: convert zero-based assumptions to Julia’s one-based indexing deliberately.
- Assuming package availability: verify the exact Julia package, version and backend required by your project.
- Calling interoperability free: wrappers and data movement can erase a speed benefit if they occur inside a tight loop.
- Using popularity as a proxy for suitability: no reliable population-level adoption statistic is established here, and the Data Jamboree project was not a market survey.
A practical learning path
If you choose Python
Learn the language fundamentals, virtual environments and package management first. Then practice tabular operations, visualization, model evaluation and reading data from the systems you expect to use. Build one complete project that moves from raw input to a reproducible result rather than collecting isolated notebook examples.
If you choose Julia
Learn Julia’s indexing, multiple dispatch, types and package environments alongside DataFrames.jl. Work through file input with CSV.jl or Arrow.jl, table transformations and missing-value handling. The DataFrames.jl documentation lists Julia for Data Analysis among learning resources; verify the book’s current edition and availability before purchasing because those details can change.

If you learn both
Keep a clear boundary. Use the language that owns a component, define a stable data format, and test conversions with nulls, dates, categorical values and numeric precision. A mixed stack can be effective when each language has a measured role, but it should not become an unmanaged collection of wrappers.
Frequently asked questions
Is Julia better than Python for data science?
Not universally. Julia can be the better fit for custom numerical, simulation and performance-sensitive work. Python is usually the better default for a broad, integrated data-science workflow.
Which language is easier to get a data-science job with?
The available evidence here does not support a reliable job-market ranking. Read the requirements for the specific team or role and learn the tools it actually uses.
Should a Python data scientist switch completely to Julia?
Usually not without a measured reason. Benchmark the bottleneck, include compilation and integration costs, and consider adding Julia only where it provides a verified benefit.
Can Python and Julia be used in one project?
Yes. Interoperability exists, but wrappers, data conversion, packaging and debugging across the boundary require deliberate design.
