A redirect alone does not explain broken images. Puppeteer’s page.goto() follows redirects and returns the main-document response from the last one, but that does not confirm that images or other subresources loaded. Check the final URL and page state, inspect image requests separately, then wait for the page’s actual image-readiness condition before taking the screenshot.
Does Puppeteer follow redirects?
Yes. page.goto() navigates through server redirects and resolves with the response for the final main-resource request. Log that response, its status, and page.url() to confirm where the browser ended up. The returned response describes the document navigation—not each image request. A successful document status does not prove the browser reached the intended application state or loaded all images. The final destination could be a login, challenge, or error page, and an HTTP error status should be checked explicitly; headless shell does not necessarily throw just because the server returned a valid HTTP error such as 404 or 500.

Navigation and subresource loading are separate. Once a navigation commits, Chromium parses and renders the document, runs scripts, and loads resources such as images. DOMContentLoaded can fire before subresources finish loading, so taking a screenshot at that point may capture images that have not arrived. Chromium describes this distinction in its navigation documentation.

There is not enough information in the symptom alone to identify the cause on a particular site. Inspect the browser’s image requests and test plausible causes rather than assuming the redirect itself broke them. For example, a destination page may reference inaccessible or expired image URLs, or a request may be blocked. These are hypotheses to verify from the actual request and response records.
Diagnose the navigation and image requests
- Record the navigation outcome. Capture the response from
page.goto(), its HTTP status, and the finalpage.url(). Compare the final URL with the destination you expected. - Verify the rendered page. Check the expected title, a page-specific selector, or another reliable signal that the application loaded the intended content. A successful status alone is not sufficient.
- Inspect images independently. Log failed requests and image response statuses. Compare the requested image URLs with the final page and investigate blocked requests, access restrictions, expired URLs, or HTTP/HTTPS mismatches where the trace suggests them.
- Choose a wait condition that matches the page. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates
waitUntil: 'networkidle2', but this is an example, not a guarantee that lazy images or application-populated images are ready. Wait for the specific images or a page-specific ready signal when needed. - Validate before capturing. Check that critical image elements have loaded usable content. If required content is absent, report a diagnostic or fail the capture instead of silently saving a misleading screenshot.
Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows navigation with networkidle2 before a screenshot. Use it as a starting point, not proof that every site’s images are ready.

A diagnostic Puppeteer pattern
This example records the final document response and failed requests, checks an expected page selector, and verifies selected image elements before capture. Replace the URL, selector, and image selector with values specific to the page. The exact readiness policy should reflect how that page loads images.

In the example above, move the page.on('requestfailed', ...) block before the navigation call for that purpose. A completed image check can still miss images that are added later by application code, so wait for the site’s own ready state or target image selector where appropriate.

Common errors and fixes
- The final URL is unexpected: inspect the redirect destination and verify whether the browser landed on a login, challenge, or error page. Fix the request or authentication flow for the expected destination.
- The document status is 404 or 500: check
response.status(); do not rely onpage.goto()throwing for every HTTP error. Correct the target URL or address the server response. - The page reaches an early lifecycle event but images are incomplete: wait for the relevant image elements or application-ready condition rather than relying on
DOMContentLoaded. - An image request failed or returned an error: use its URL, failure reason, and response status to investigate access, URL validity, blocking, or protocol mismatch. The navigation response cannot diagnose these individual requests.
- Navigation to HTTP fails with
net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT: Puppeteer’s troubleshooting documentation describes a version- and environment-dependent Chrome for Testing case involving an HTTPS-first warning. Check whether the redirect chain targets HTTP and consult the Puppeteer troubleshooting guide; this is one possible branch, not a general explanation for broken images.
