A Puppeteer screenshot records what the browser rendered at capture time; it does not tell you whether the article text was loaded underneath a paywall. Check the article element’s text and visibility before capturing. If the text is present in the DOM while a separate dialog covers it, the content loaded but is visually obscured. If it is absent, it was not present in the inspected DOM at that moment. Without the target URL, script, and page state, those possibilities cannot be distinguished in advance.
First separate the three things you are observing
A reliable diagnosis compares the page’s content, its appearance, and the condition your script used to decide it was ready.

| Observation | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Article text exists in the DOM | The browser has article text available in the inspected page state. | It does not mean that text is visible in the screenshot or that the page permits access to it. |
| A paywall overlay is visible | A blocking layer is part of the rendered view. | It does not establish whether the article text was also delivered. |
| Navigation or network idle completed | A navigation or network-activity condition was met. | It does not guarantee that a particular article element exists or that a paywall is absent. |
The key distinction is DOM state versus visual state. An overlay and loaded article text can coexist; an overlay can also appear when article text is not present in the page.
Diagnose the page before taking the screenshot
-
Wait for a meaningful navigation condition
Use
page.goto()with a deliberatewaitUntilcondition. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstratesnetworkidle2, but network idle is only one readiness signal. A page can become quiet before its article is rendered, and some pages keep network activity open.#1 Best Overall

Wait for the article, not just the page shell
Choose a selector specific to the article body, such as one confirmed in the target site’s DOM, and wait for it with
page.waitForSelector()or a locator. A generic selector such asbodycan exist while the article is still loading. When appropriate, configure the wait to require visibility; the element’s existence alone does not prove it can be seen. -
Read the element text and visibility
Inspect the chosen article element and, if useful, the page’s visible text. Record the result alongside the screenshot. Treat these checks as observations of that page state, not as proof about why the site behaves that way.

-
Compare the result with the screenshot
- If meaningful article text is present but a separate dialog covers the page, the content is in the inspected DOM while the overlay obscures the rendered view.
- If article text is missing, it was not present in the inspected DOM at that point. The cause could be delayed rendering, a page response that did not include it, or another site-specific behavior; the check alone does not identify which.
- If the screenshot shows a browser warning or interstitial rather than the publisher’s page, inspect the navigation result and page content. A browser-level warning is different from a site-level paywall.
-
Capture only after the condition you care about
Use
page.screenshot()after the article-specific wait and inspection. Keep the requested URL, navigation result, diagnostic text, and screenshot together so that differences between runs can be investigated.Quick wins for a faster PC:

A Puppeteer diagnostic example
Replace ARTICLE_URL and ARTICLE_SELECTOR with the authorized page and a selector you have verified for its article body. This example logs the navigation response, waits for the article element, reports its text and visibility, then saves a screenshot. A timeout is reported rather than silently treated as proof that the article is absent.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const url = 'ARTICLE_URL';
const articleSelector = 'ARTICLE_SELECTOR';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
const response = await page.goto(url, {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: 60000
});
console.log('Navigation status:', response ? response.status() : 'no HTTP response');
console.log('Final URL:', page.url());
try {
await page.waitForSelector(articleSelector, {
visible: true,
timeout: 15000
});
} catch (error) {
console.warn('Visible article selector was not found before timeout.');
}
const article = await page.$eval(articleSelector, element => ({
text: (element.innerText || element.textContent || '').trim(),
visible: Boolean(
element.getClientRects().length &&
getComputedStyle(element).visibility !== 'hidden' &&
getComputedStyle(element).display !== 'none'
)
})).catch(() => null);
console.log('Article inspection:', article || 'selector not present in DOM');
console.log('Page text sample:', await page.evaluate(() =>
(document.body?.innerText || '').slice(0, 2000)
));
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The visibility check is a practical signal, not a complete test of whether every pixel is unobscured: a positioned overlay can cover an otherwise visible article element. The screenshot remains useful for checking the rendered result. Also, a failed selector lookup means only that the selected element was not found in that DOM state; verify that the selector matches the site and that the page is the expected destination.
Why common waiting strategies mislead
Fixed sleeps
A fixed delay can be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one. It does not establish that the article selector appeared. Prefer an explicit wait for the relevant selector, with a timeout that lets your script report a diagnosable failure.

Network idle alone
waitUntil: 'networkidle2' and page.waitForNetworkIdle() describe network activity, not article readiness. Use them as navigation or settling signals where suitable, then check the target content itself.
Generic page selectors
The document body, a header, or a site shell may render before the article. Waiting for those elements can make the screenshot deterministic while still capturing the wrong state. Tie the readiness condition to the content you intend to inspect.

Common failures and what to check
- Selector wait times out: Confirm the selector against the actual page DOM, confirm the final URL, and inspect whether the page rendered an error or interstitial instead of the expected article.
- Selector exists but text is empty: The element’s presence is not evidence that its content has loaded. Inspect the broader page text and wait for a site-specific condition that corresponds to populated article content.
- Article text is logged but hidden in the image: Compare the DOM result with the screenshot. A visible overlay may cover loaded content. This diagnosis does not authorize removing or bypassing an intentional paywall.
- Navigation response is missing or unexpected: Log the final URL and inspect the page content. A browser warning page or a redirect can mean the screenshot is not of the intended publisher page.
- Results vary between runs: Save the URL, status, selector result, text sample, and screenshot for each run. This helps distinguish timing variation from a changed navigation or page state.
Respect the access boundary
A paywall is an access control chosen by the publisher. Use an authorized account or an interface the site permits; do not treat Puppeteer timing or DOM inspection as a way to defeat a paywall. The diagnostic workflow here determines what was present and rendered in your browser session, not whether content is legitimately accessible.
Or skip the browser setup
For screenshots of pages you are authorized to capture, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API: one GET request returns an image or PDF. Its clean-shot steps can accept cookie or consent banners and remove supported consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer’s network-idle condition mean the article is ready?
No. It signals network quiet, not the presence or visibility of a specific article element.
Can DOM inspection prove that I am allowed to read the article?
No. It reports page state in your browser session; it does not grant access or override the publisher’s terms.
