Why Puppeteer screenshot paths fail with ENOENT
Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions.path specifies the image output filename. Puppeteer infers the image format from the filename extension; if you omit path, the screenshot is not saved to disk. That means screenshots/run/page.png refers to a location under process.cwd(). If one of its parent folders is missing, the filesystem cannot write the file and Node.js can report ENOENT (“no such file or directory”). Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows saving a screenshot by supplying a path, but does not describe automatic creation of missing parent folders. Fix it by creating the parent directory first
Resolve the destination to an absolute path, create its parent directory recursively, and then pass that path to Puppeteer. This example uses Node.js ES modules:

The log statements make it easier to see whether the runtime is writing under the project directory, a test runner’s working directory, or a deployment directory. The pattern applies the documented path behavior; it is not a verbatim Puppeteer recipe.
Diagnose the path mismatch step by step
- Print the actual working directory. Log
process.cwd()in the same runtime that captures the screenshot. Do not assume it matches the script’s location. - Resolve and log the full destination. Use
resolve(process.cwd(), 'screenshots', 'page.png'), or resolve the relative path you already use, and inspect the resulting absolute path. - Check every parent folder. For a destination such as
screenshots/run/page.png, confirmscreenshotsandscreenshots/runexist beneath the resolved base, or create them recursively before capture. - Inspect spelling and case. Check each directory name, filename, and path separator, especially when code moves between environments with different filesystem conventions.
- Read the complete error. If the error persists, inspect
error.path. Node.js documents this path as absolute, which can reveal the precise location the failing operation attempted to use. Node.js file system documentation
Choose an output path strategy

Puppeteer documents how relative paths are based on the current working directory; it does not prescribe one strategy for every application. If your application has a stable output directory, make that base explicit and create it during startup or immediately before capture.

Troubleshoot remaining ENOENT errors
- The logged destination is unexpected: the process is running with a different working directory than you assumed. Set or resolve the output base deliberately rather than relying on the script file’s location.
- The destination looks right but the error remains: compare the full
error.pathwith the logged destination and verify that the parent folders were created before the screenshot call. - The screenshot is not saved, but there is no path error: check whether you supplied
path. Puppeteer does not save the screenshot to disk when that option is omitted. Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions - You are considering browser-installation changes: first separate screenshot writing from browser launch diagnosis. ENOENT on the screenshot destination points to a path or filesystem location to inspect; the cited documentation does not support changing browser-installation settings or disabling browser security options for this symptom.
