The values define the rectangle; they do not identify a DOM element automatically. If you want the bounds of a particular element instead, use that element handle’s screenshot() method.
Capture a rectangle with the clip option
Here is the basic pattern from Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions reference (version 25.12.0):

await page.screenshot({
path: 'region.png',
clip: { x: 100, y: 200, width: 400, height: 300 },
});
The coordinates and dimensions above are illustrative, not a tested crop. Set them to the rectangle you intend to capture, then inspect the resulting image against your page and viewport.

What the rectangle values mean
xandylocate the rectangle.widthandheightset its dimensions.scaleis an optional property ofScreenshotClip; its documented default is1. See Puppeteer’s ScreenshotClip reference (version 25.10.0).
Because a clip is a geometric region, a layout change, viewport change, or different browser/protocol setup can affect whether the chosen coordinates cover the intended content. Check the output whenever those conditions matter.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Choose an output path and format
path is optional. When you provide one, Puppeteer saves the screenshot to that file and infers the image type from the extension; without a path, it does not save the screenshot to disk. For example, change region.png to region.webp if you want the extension to indicate WebP.
Capture an element by its rendered bounds
If the desired boundary is a DOM element rather than a manually chosen rectangle, use an element handle’s screenshot method. Puppeteer’s Screenshots guide (version 25.12.0) documents that this method scrolls the element into view if necessary before taking the screenshot.

const element = await page.$('.card');
if (!element) {
throw new Error('Could not find .card');
}
await element.screenshot({ path: 'card.png' });
Replace .card with a selector in your page. This example checks for a missing match before capturing; an element handle that has become detached from the DOM can also cause the capture to fail, as noted in the ElementHandle.screenshot() reference.

| Approach | Use it when | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
page.screenshot({ clip }) |
You know the rectangle to capture. | You specify coordinates and dimensions; it does not select an element by CSS selector. |
element.screenshot() |
You want a specific element’s rendered bounds. | Puppeteer scrolls the element into view if needed; a detached element causes an error. |

clip: { x: 100, y: 100, width: 600, height: 400 },
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
For a reproducible crop, keep the viewport and page state consistent, and verify that the content has loaded before capturing. A fixed clip is tied to the geometry you specify; it is not a substitute for selecting an element whose position or size can change.
Viewport, full-page capture, and protocol considerations
In Puppeteer’s current ScreenshotOptions reference (version 25.12.0), captureBeyondViewport defaults to true when a clip is provided and false otherwise. You can set it explicitly if that behavior is relevant to your capture. Do not assume this default describes every browser or protocol combination.

Puppeteer’s WebDriver BiDi support page lists clip, encoding, and fullPage among supported Page.screenshot parameters. It documents a subset of screenshot parameters, so that list should not be treated as support for every screenshot option.
Troubleshoot a clipped screenshot
- The crop misses the intended content: Check the rectangle’s
x,y,width, andheight, then inspect the actual output. If the target is a DOM element, switch toElementHandle.screenshot()rather than guessing its bounds. - The element capture throws: Confirm the selector found an element and that its handle is still attached to the DOM when the screenshot runs.
- The screenshot is not on disk: Supply a
path; Puppeteer documents that a screenshot without one is not saved to disk. - The output format is unexpected: When saving to a path, check its extension because Puppeteer infers the image type from it.
- The result differs between runs or setups: Check page layout, viewport, browser, and protocol. The clip describes a rectangle, and the BiDi support page only establishes support for the parameters it lists.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Puppeteer `clip` option select an element by CSS selector?
No. It captures a rectangle defined by coordinates and dimensions. Use an element handle’s `screenshot()` method when the element’s rendered bounds should define the capture.

Can I use `clip` with Puppeteer’s WebDriver BiDi support?
Puppeteer’s WebDriver BiDi support page lists `clip` among the supported `Page.screenshot` parameters, but it does not establish support for every screenshot option.
