Puppeteer Full-Page Screenshots Cut Off? How to Find and Fix the Cause

Set fullPage: true on the intended page, then check whether a clip, unfinished rendering, nested scroll container, viewport-dependent CSS, or a browser-version issue is limiting what you see. A full-page screenshot captures the page as rendered; it cannot create content that has not loaded. Work through the checks below in order, changing one variable at a time.

1. Confirm you are capturing the whole page

Use page.screenshot() with fullPage: true and make sure you are calling it on the page you expect. Puppeteer defines fullPage, clip, and captureBeyondViewport as separate screenshot options; an unintended clip can restrict the capture region. See the Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions reference and official screenshot guide.

await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png', fullPage: true });
  • Search the options passed to the screenshot call and any wrapper/helper for a clip value.
  • Check that the code is not taking an element screenshot when you intend to capture the document. Element capture targets that element, not the full page.
  • Do not treat captureBeyondViewport as interchangeable with fullPage. The reference documents distinct behavior: it defaults to false without a clip and true when a clip is specified.

If this basic call still ends at the viewport, continue to loading and scroll ownership before changing browser flags.

2. Make sure below-the-fold content has rendered

Navigation reaching its chosen lifecycle state does not guarantee that every application component or lazy-loaded asset is ready. Lazy-loaded images, iframes, and other asynchronous content may only load after the relevant area is brought into view. Scroll the page to trigger that behavior, then verify the particular content is present and ready before taking the screenshot.

await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.evaluate(async () => {
  const step = Math.max(window.innerHeight, 400);
  for (let y = 0; y < document.documentElement.scrollHeight; y += step) {
    window.scrollTo(0, y);
    await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 150));
  }
  window.scrollTo(0, 0);
});
// Add a site-specific readiness check here before capture.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png', fullPage: true });

The loop is a trigger, not proof of readiness: replace the short pause with checks tied to your site, such as waiting for required image completion or a component’s ready state. One historical Puppeteer report described missing lower-page content even after a network-idle navigation wait and an additional delay. It shows why a generic delay cannot be assumed sufficient for every page; it is not evidence that a particular wait setting fixes the problem. See the reported lazy-content case.

3. Check which element actually scrolls

Some layouts keep the document at roughly viewport height and place the long content inside an element styled with overflow: auto or overflow: scroll. In that case, the visually scrollable content belongs to the nested element, not the document dimensions that a full-page capture uses.

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
const dimensions = await page.evaluate(() => ({
  viewportHeight: window.innerHeight,
  documentHeight: document.documentElement.scrollHeight,
  scrollable: [...document.querySelectorAll('*')]
    .filter(el => el.scrollHeight > el.clientHeight &&
      ['auto', 'scroll'].includes(getComputedStyle(el).overflowY))
    .map(el => ({
      tag: el.tagName,
      id: el.id,
      className: el.className,
      clientHeight: el.clientHeight,
      scrollHeight: el.scrollHeight
    }))
}));
console.log(dimensions);

Compare documentHeight with the scrollable elements and inspect the page’s scrollbar owner in DevTools. If the content is inside a nested container, scroll that container through its content and capture the intended element or assemble the required output using an approach suited to that layout. Check the resulting image against the visible DOM and the expected section count. A historical issue discusses a fake scrolling element that left the document apparently only viewport-height; its details are page-dependent, not a universal Puppeteer behavior: Puppeteer issue discussion.

4. Preserve viewport-dependent layout

CSS such as 100vh and vw, responsive breakpoints, and fixed or sticky elements can affect the page’s geometry during capture. First keep the viewport at the width and height the page is meant to use, then inspect computed styles and dimensions around the point where the image goes wrong. Avoid resizing the viewport as a blind workaround: it can change the layout you were trying to capture. Historical reports discuss viewport-relative sizing and full-page dimensions, but they do not establish identical behavior in every current release: viewport sizing report.

5. Test browser-version-specific clipping last

If the target, loading state, scroll owner, and viewport all check out, record your installed Puppeteer version and the Chromium version it launches. Reduce the problem to a minimal page and compare results before trying a launch flag. A historical Puppeteer discussion mentions --blink-settings=mainFrameClipsContent=false as a workaround after a Chromium change, but that thread is not a current universal recommendation. Test whether it affects your specific versions and page before adopting it: historical clipping discussion.

6. Isolate the cause with a small comparison

When two pages show the same symptom, compare the factors that determine the capture rather than assuming they share a fix.

What to compare Diagnostic question What it can reveal
Capture target Is this a whole-page screenshot or an element screenshot? Is clip set? A constrained target or capture region.
Scroll owner Does the document scroll, or does a nested container own the scrollbar? Content outside the document’s reported height.
Rendering state Are images, iframes, or components loaded only after scrolling or other asynchronous work? Content absent at capture time rather than cropped from the image.
Layout dependence Do vh/vw, sticky elements, or breakpoints affect geometry? A layout change during capture.
Versions Which Puppeteer and Chromium versions reproduce the issue? A version-specific behavior worth reducing to a minimal test.

If the screenshot is still incomplete

Reduce the page and capture call to a minimal reproduction, and include the page’s relevant scroll-container CSS, how content becomes ready, and the Puppeteer and Chromium versions. That information helps distinguish a capture-option problem from page-specific rendering or browser behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does fullPage: true wait for every image and widget to finish loading?

No. It requests a full-page capture of the rendered page; lazy or asynchronous content may need to be triggered and checked separately.
