To isolate a Puppeteer session, create a browser context with browser.createBrowserContext(), then create its pages with context.newPage(). Cookies and local storage are not shared with other contexts, and closing the new context closes the pages it contains. This guide follows the Puppeteer API documentation, whose referenced pages report versions 25.12.0 and 25.9.0; check the live API reference if you need to confirm details for another version.
What a BrowserContext isolates
A BrowserContext groups pages and their browser-level session state. Puppeteer documents cookies and local storage as isolated between contexts; the createBrowserContext() method reference also says cookies and cache are not shared. In Chrome, non-default contexts are incognito contexts.
Isolation applies between contexts, not between pages in one context. Pages created from the same context share its session state. A popup opened by a page belongs to that page’s context, so it remains part of the same session grouping.
This is storage separation, not a promise of anonymity, fingerprinting resistance, or a separate browser process. The API documentation describes contexts within a Browser instance and does not establish those stronger guarantees.

Create and clean up an isolated session
Launch a browser, create a non-default context, and make pages through that context. Use try/finally so cleanup runs if navigation or automation fails.

}context.close() closes the context’s associated pages. The default browser context cannot be closed, which is why a separately created context is useful when the work needs its own teardown.

Choose the right page-creation method
context.newPage()creates a page in the isolated context. Use it for work that should have separate cookies and storage.browser.newPage()creates a page in the default browser context. It does not put that page in a newly created context.browser.browserContexts()lists the open contexts. A newly launched browser has one default context before you create any additional contexts.
Keep related pages in one context when they need to behave like pages in the same session. Create separate contexts when tasks should not share their context-level storage or when each task needs independent cleanup.

Troubleshooting common context mistakes
- State appears to be shared. Check that every page was created with the intended context’s
newPage(), rather thanbrowser.newPage(). Pages in the same context share that context’s session state. - Closing the context fails or is unavailable. The default context cannot be closed. Create a separate context with
browser.createBrowserContext()and close that context instead. - A popup seems to be in the wrong session. A popup belongs to the context of the page that opened it; it does not become a separate context automatically.
- The code relies on incognito for anonymity or process separation. Incognito describes non-default Chrome contexts in the cited Puppeteer documentation. It does not establish anonymity or a separate browser process.
- Pages remain open after a task. Close the context to close its associated pages, and close the browser when the whole automation run is finished.
