The PUMA FAST-R NITRO Elite 3 is a very light, highly aggressive carbon-plated road racer. It can be an excellent marathon shoe for runners who like a forceful rocker and direct propulsion, but its sharp geometry and limited stability make it a poor universal recommendation. A September 2026 community report put the shoe at about $200 after a claimed drop from a $300 retail price; that is a lead to verify, not a guaranteed current price.
Tom’s Guide’s tester, who evaluated 17 carbon-plated shoes, named the Fast-R 3 a favorite after using it for a 15:53 parkrun, a 10-mile run and the London Marathon. Those are one tester’s results, not a promise that every runner will become faster in the shoe.

What the Fast-R NITRO Elite 3 is
PUMA positions the FAST-R NITRO Elite 3 as a men’s road-running shoe with a carbon-fiber PWRPLATE, NITROFOAM Elite cushioning, neutral pronation support, maximum cushioning, a regular-width fit and an 8 mm heel-to-toe drop. PWRPLATE is intended to stabilize the midsole and improve energy transfer, while NITROFOAM Elite is the lightweight performance foam beneath the foot.

PUMA lists an average lifespan of 300 km. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independently verified durability test, so treat it as a planning estimate rather than a warranty or guaranteed mileage.

Why it feels fast
Very low measured weight
RunRepeat measured the Fast-R NITRO Elite 3 at 6.1 oz (173 g). Its measurement of the previous Fast-R NITRO Elite 2 was 9.3 oz (264 g), making the new model 3.2 oz (91 g) lighter in that test. Weight varies with size and measuring method, but the result supports PUMA’s lightweight-racer positioning.
Rocker and extended plate
Tom’s Guide describes a sharp rocker and an extended carbon plate that helped the tester roll through the forefoot and hold marathon pace. The combination is designed to move you quickly from landing to toe-off instead of producing a soft, easygoing ride.

Responsive foam
The same tester reported strong energy return and enough cushioning for the marathon, writing: “The Fast-R 3 is incredibly light, but still has enough responsive foam underfoot to deliver a lot of energy return and enough comfort for the marathon.” RTINGS independently identifies the NITROFOAM Elite compound as an A-TPU race foam, providing another review perspective on the shoe’s construction.

Tom’s Guide’s tester ran a 2:26 marathon in the Fast-R 3 and set a personal record over five miles. The tester also used it for a 15:53 parkrun and a 10-mile outing, crediting the low weight, responsive foam, rocker and extended plate for the shoe’s race-day feel. These observations describe one runner’s experience; they do not establish a universal speed gain, injury reduction or performance percentage.

Who should buy it—and who should not
It suits runners who want
- A lightweight, race-focused shoe for road events, including the marathon.
- A pronounced rocker and forceful forward roll rather than a relaxed, flexible ride.
- A neutral, regular-width platform and an 8 mm drop.
- Maximum cushioning without giving up a firm, propulsive carbon-plate sensation.
Look elsewhere if you need
- A forgiving shoe for easy mileage or a broad range of daily training.
- Extra inherent stability. Tom’s Guide warns that the aggressive geometry can feel too direct or unstable for some runners.
- A fit outside PUMA’s regular-width offering.
- Long-term durability evidence beyond PUMA’s 300 km manufacturer estimate.
The best test is a controlled try-on: check whether your heel stays centered, your toes have room at full stride and the rocker feels like it assists your gait rather than pitching you forward. A shoe that feels unstable at easy pace is unlikely to become comfortable simply because it is fast.
Fast-R 3 versus other high-end racers
Tom’s Guide names the ASICS Metaspeed Sky Tokyo as the closest high-end racing alternative and suggests the Hoka Rocket X3 when a more comfortable, forgiving ride matters. The cited reports do not establish directly comparable measurements for every model, so the table separates known Fast-R 3 information from items not stated in those reports.

Is the $100 reduction real?
A RunningShoeGeeks community post from September 2026 reports a purchase at roughly $200 after a drop from a $300 full-retail price. Because this is a user report rather than a captured retailer listing, it supports the “$100 off” claim only as a current lead. Prices, sizes, colors, currency, promotions and regional availability can change.

A practical buying and race-day checklist
- Confirm the model: Look for “FAST-R NITRO Elite 3,” not the Elite 2 or another PUMA racing shoe.
- Verify the deal: Compare the displayed price with the stated $300 retail reference and check whether the reduction is a temporary promotion.
- Check fit: The listed construction is regular width. Try the shoe with race socks and leave normal toe-room without allowing heel lift.
- Assess stability: Walk and jog at easy pace before committing to a race. If the platform feels unstable, choose a more forgiving racer.
- Save it for appropriate runs: The shoe’s geometry is aimed at racing and fast efforts, while PUMA’s 300 km figure should guide expectations about eventual replacement.
Bottom line for racers
The Fast-R NITRO Elite 3 is compelling when your priorities are minimum weight, maximum propulsion and a marathon-capable amount of cushioning. Its strongest evidence is a 6.1 oz measured weight and positive, clearly attributed testing from Tom’s Guide—not a guaranteed performance advantage. Buy it when the fit is secure, you tolerate an aggressive rocker and the live listing really shows the claimed discount. If comfort and stability outrank outright race aggression, the Rocket X3 is the more sensible alternative named in the available coverage.
