Researchers have demonstrated pattern recognition, cellular automata and optimization experiments, often with electronic control or readout. The “quantum rivals” comparison describes overlapping research ambitions—not a verified contest: the available studies do not show a BZ system outperforming a quantum computer.
What is a pulsating chemical computer?
Chemical computing is a broad family of approaches that use chemical states or reactions to process information. In BZ systems, the Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction produces visible oscillations: the reaction changes state over time, and those changes can be encoded, coupled between cells and read as computational output.

Architectures vary. Some use a shared reaction medium or reaction-diffusion waves; others partition the chemistry into interacting cells. Many combine the chemical substrate with digital input, control, image processing or electronics. “Chemical computer” therefore does not necessarily mean a self-contained machine that accepts a conventional program and returns an answer without electronic assistance. A 2021 review describes chemical computation as encompassing reaction-diffusion, geometry-assisted and hybrid approaches, rather than one standard design (Frontiers in Chemistry review).

Memory and pattern recognition in a 25-cell array
A 2020 Nature Communications study reported a programmable BZ chemical computer built from a 5-by-5 array of 25 switchable cells. In that experiment, the system demonstrated memory and pattern recognition, distinguishing 20 patterns with up to 92.5% accuracy. That figure belongs to this specific apparatus and experiment; it is not a general accuracy rating for chemical computers (Nature Communications, 2020).

Hybrid chemical logic and cellular automata
A 2024 Nature Communications study presented a digitally programmable hybrid array using BZ oscillators partitioned into interconnected cells. It used interactions between neighboring cells alongside digital control and error-correction logic, and demonstrated one- and two-dimensional chemical cellular automata and probabilistic logic applied to combinatorial-optimization problems. These are proof-of-concept demonstrations of a hybrid chemical-digital processor, not a benchmark against quantum hardware (Nature Communications, 2024).
Why the quantum comparison is not a proven contest
The phrase “vie with their quantum rivals” comes from a Chemistry World report published on 26 March 2024 about work by Lee Cronin’s University of Glasgow team. The report describes interconnected wells whose BZ color oscillations were used to investigate optimization problems also targeted by quantum-computing research. It also reports expert skepticism about the prospect of such a result (Chemistry World, 26 March 2024).
That framing is about possible approaches to related classes of problems. The cited work does not establish that a chemical computer beat a quantum computer, or even provide a verified head-to-head comparison. Such a comparison would need to specify the same problem and workload, output quality or error rate, total runtime including input and readout, system scale and reproducibility, and how much of the computation happens in the chemical substrate rather than in digital control. Parallel chemical activity by itself is not evidence of an advantage.

What limits current BZ demonstrations
Reaction time and reagent depletion
In the 2020 apparatus, the reaction was allowed to stabilize for 10 minutes, visible oscillations were observed over a 30-minute window, and cycles lasted about 40 seconds to one minute. The paper notes that reagents deplete over time. These timings describe that experimental setup and recipe, not universal limits for BZ chemistry.
Engineering and reproducibility
Practical questions include robustness, reproducibility, connectivity between cells, scaling, coupling and reliable readout. IBM Research’s archived chemical-computing project page lists these as open questions for the field; its discussion of Ising-solver outcomes describes project aims, not completed results (IBM Research: Chemical Computing).
These constraints matter when interpreting a demonstration: a result may depend on digital coordination or image analysis, and the behavior of a small array does not by itself show that a larger, reliable computer can be built. Current BZ systems are research platforms, not established consumer replacements for ordinary computers or demonstrated replacements for quantum hardware.

How to assess future claims
A meaningful claim of superiority should compare like with like. When evaluating a reported chemical-computing result, check:
Recommended Free Tools
- Problem and workload: Were the chemical and quantum systems asked to solve the same defined task?
- Answer quality: Were accuracy, error rates and success criteria reported for both?
- End-to-end time: Does the stated runtime include setup, input, chemical evolution, digital processing and readout?
- Scale and repeatability: How many cells or variables were used, and can the result be reproduced reliably?
- Where computation occurs: Which operations take place in the reacting medium, and which depend on electronic or digital components?
Without those details, “rival” describes a direction of research, not evidence that one technology has overtaken the other.
