Witness information from Redding, California, helped Sutherlin Police recover a historic steam whistle stolen from a locomotive display in Sutherlin, Oregon. Sutherlin Police coordinated with Redding Police, whose officers located and recovered it, KQEN reported on October 6, 2026.
How the whistle was recovered
The whistle was cut from a locomotive displayed in Sutherlin’s Central Park on September 15, 2026, according to KQEN’s October 6 report. After Sutherlin Police made a public appeal for information, witnesses in Redding provided information that helped police there locate and recover the whistle. Sutherlin Police coordinated with Redding Police during the recovery.

The earlier appeal, republished by A News Cafe on October 1, said an initial search in Redding had not found it. The later recovery report updates that earlier status.
What was stolen
The locomotive is a 1921 Cooke oil-fired steam engine. Sutherlin Police described the stolen item in their appeal as a Star Brass five-chime steam whistle. The city’s appeal said the locomotive represented equipment used to haul timber from the Cascade Mountains above Sutherlin. The display also includes a coal car and the locomotive’s original caboose.

What is not yet confirmed
KQEN’s report confirms that officers recovered the whistle in Redding, but does not give the recovery date, describe its condition, or say whether it has been returned to Sutherlin or reinstalled on the locomotive. It also does not report a later case disposition.
