The practical decision is therefore about hardware and input first, then console generation or mobile-region support. The details below reflect the current console transition announced for November 2025 and the official mobile store and support information available in October 2026.

Neither column is a “better version” in the abstract. A large-screen player who wants physical controls and current console performance has a different requirement from someone who needs a game that runs on a phone during a commute.
They are separate game products, not two clients for one account
The publisher’s mobile site identifies PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile and sends players to mobile app stores. The BATTLEGROUNDS product is distributed through PC storefronts and console stores. That separation affects installation, updates, control schemes, modes, and service policies.

It is safest to treat the titles as independent products. The official pages checked for this comparison do not establish shared progression, shared purchases, a universal account inventory, or cross-play between BATTLEGROUNDS and PUBG MOBILE. A cosmetic, battle-pass entitlement, rank, or unlock obtained in one should not be assumed to appear in the other. If an account migration or promotion is ever offered, rely on the specific notice for that promotion rather than on the shared PUBG name.
How the gameplay differs
BATTLEGROUNDS: a tactical survival battle royale
The official Xbox description summarizes the familiar loop as “LAND, LOOT, SURVIVE!” You enter a match, land, search buildings and terrain for weapons and supplies, and try to remain the last player or team alive. The tactical emphasis comes from choosing where to land, managing ammunition and equipment, moving as the playable area changes, and deciding when to fight or avoid contact.
The same description frames the game around individual players and teams rather than a single fixed team size. Match rules, maps, and playlists can change with updates, so the store description should not be read as a complete or permanent mode catalog. It also mentions limited cross-platform play on featured BATTLEGROUNDS platforms; that statement concerns BATTLEGROUNDS platform families, not the mobile app.

The official Google Play listing describes a 100-player Classic Mode and additional formats including 4v4 Arena, Payload, and Infection Mode. It also highlights training mode, voice chat with friends, and customizable controls. Those are explicit mobile-oriented features: a new player can practice inputs, rearrange the on-screen layout, and coordinate through built-in voice communication without treating a touchscreen like a console controller.
Mobile’s list is not evidence that every mode, map, rule, or balance setting is identical to the PC or console game. The products can receive different updates and can present the same broad battle-royale concept in different playlists. In particular, the store listing’s “100-player” figure applies to Classic Mode as described there, not automatically to every mobile mode.
Controls change the feel and the learning curve
On PC, a keyboard and mouse provide separate movement, aiming, inventory, and camera inputs. On a console, those actions are mapped to a controller. On a phone or tablet, movement, camera control, aiming, firing, inventory, and vehicle actions share the touch display. PUBG MOBILE’s customizable-control feature matters because players can move buttons, adjust their layout, and develop a setup that suits their hand position and device size.

Touch input also makes screen size and grip important. A tablet offers more room for controls, while a smaller phone may be easier to hold but leave less space for simultaneous movement and aiming. Voice chat is listed as a mobile feature; a headset or microphone can improve communication, but the listing does not make an accessory a requirement.

Where you can play BATTLEGROUNDS now
PC
The official game landing page lists Steam and Epic Games alongside PlayStation and Xbox. Install the PC edition from the storefront where you intend to play, then check that your operating system, graphics hardware, storage, and network connection meet the current store requirements. Those technical requirements can change with patches, so a storefront’s live specification is more useful than an old hardware checklist.
Current consoles: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
A November 2025 transition changed the supported console generation. From November 13, 2025, PUBG Console is available only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PS4 and Xbox One versions stopped being downloadable or playable after that transition date.
PlayStation users must download the PS5 version. Xbox users with the game installed receive the current-generation version through Smart Delivery. The official notice says existing account data and purchased items remain preserved for players moving to supported consoles, which is a console-generation transition within BATTLEGROUNDS—not evidence of transfer to PUBG MOBILE.
Publisher-listed console output
The following figures come from the 2025 official transition notice. They are publisher specifications, not independent benchmark measurements, and Dynamic 4K support is specifically identified for Xbox Series X and PS5 Pro.

Do not use an older Xbox store page that still names Xbox One as proof of current support; the dated console-transition announcement supersedes that legacy listing.

Where you can play PUBG MOBILE
Android
The official PUBG MOBILE site links to Google Play. Open the listing from the country where you will actually play, because the available edition, age rating, payment options, and service terms can differ by territory. Install only the official listing for your region and keep the app updated through the same store account.
iPhone and iPad
The official Apple listing supports iPhone and iPad and gives compatibility guidance of iPhone 6 or newer and iPad Air 2 or newer. That is the guidance shown in the cited listing, not a promise that every current update will run equally well on every one of those devices. Apple’s live compatibility section should be checked before installing, especially if you are using an older operating system or a device with limited storage.
Store compatibility is a minimum gate, not a performance guarantee. A compatible device may still have to reduce graphics settings, close background apps, maintain free storage for updates, or use a stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection for a good experience.
Regional availability is more complicated than seeing an app icon
PUBG MOBILE’s global site provides language options and links to the major mobile stores, but that does not prove that every edition is playable in every country. The mobile help center explicitly says the official South Korean app is serviced only in South Korea and the official Japanese app only in Japan. It says comparable regional restrictions apply to other PUBG MOBILE services.
That means an app can be visible, downloadable, or associated with an account while still being subject to a territory-specific service area. Before traveling, changing a store country, or moving an account between regions:
- Identify which regional edition you installed, rather than relying only on the game’s English or global branding.
- Read the official local store description and the regional support article for the destination.
- Check whether the service is intended for residents or players physically located in that territory.
- Confirm how updates, sign-in, payments, and customer support work after a location change.
- Do not assume that a VPN, a different store account, or a successful login overrides the edition’s published service boundary.
No complete country-by-country map is established here, and availability can change as local rules, store policies, or publisher services change. The reliable answer for a specific trip is the current local listing and support guidance, not the presence of a global download button.

Cross-play, accounts, and purchases: what is and is not established
Within BATTLEGROUNDS platforms
The Xbox store description refers to limited cross-platform play on featured BATTLEGROUNDS platforms. Read that narrowly: it concerns supported PC or console BATTLEGROUNDS environments covered by the publisher’s current implementation. Platform matchmaking rules, input pools, and availability can depend on the platform and region.

The checked official pages do not establish cross-play between the mobile app and the PC/console game. They also do not establish a shared inventory, shared rank, shared purchases, or automatic progression transfer. If you are deciding where to start, choose the product that matches your hardware and expect to build its account and unlocks there.
Moving to a new console
The November 2025 console notice is more specific: existing account data and purchased items are preserved when players move to supported current-generation consoles, with PS5 requiring the PS5 download and Xbox using Smart Delivery. That preservation applies to the BATTLEGROUNDS console transition described in the notice. It should not be generalized to a phone installation or a different regional mobile service.
Cost and monetization
Xbox lists BATTLEGROUNDS as free-to-play with optional in-game purchases. “Free-to-play” describes the listed entry model; it does not mean every cosmetic, pass, or optional item is free. Prices, taxes, payment methods, and available items can vary by country and time.
The Google Play listing for PUBG MOBILE shows ads and in-app purchases. The existence and price of a particular offer can change with the store region, event schedule, or publisher update. Apple and Google may also display different local currency and billing rules. Compare the live listing in your territory rather than using a price quoted for another country.
Which version should you choose?
Choose BATTLEGROUNDS when you have a current console or gaming PC
- You prefer a controller or keyboard and mouse over touch input.
- You want a large-screen tactical shooter and have a PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or supported PC.
- You are replacing a PS4 or Xbox One and understand that those console versions ended on November 13, 2025.
- You want the BATTLEGROUNDS platform ecosystem, including the limited platform cross-play described by the Xbox listing.
Choose PUBG MOBILE when a phone or tablet is your main gaming device
- You need a portable version with touch controls that can be rearranged.
- You want the mobile listing’s 100-player Classic Mode, 4v4 Arena, Payload, Infection Mode, training, and voice chat.
- You do not have access to a current-generation console or a gaming PC.
- Your local store and regional support page confirm that the edition is serviced where you live.
Pause before choosing based on a friend’s platform
Ask which product your friends actually use. A friend on PUBG MOBILE is not automatically in the same matchmaking pool as someone on BATTLEGROUNDS, and the official material reviewed here does not promise cross-title play. Confirm the title, platform, and regional edition before planning a squad session.
Installation and first-launch checklists
For BATTLEGROUNDS on console
- Confirm that the console is a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S; PS4 and Xbox One support ended after November 13, 2025.
- Open the console’s official store and select the current PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS listing.
- On PlayStation, download the PS5 version. On Xbox, allow Smart Delivery to provide the current-generation version.
- Sign in with the console account that owns or previously used your BATTLEGROUNDS data if you are moving from an older supported installation.
- Install updates before judging performance or matchmaking availability.
For BATTLEGROUNDS on PC
- Choose Steam or Epic Games from the official PC distribution options.
- Review the storefront’s current operating-system, hardware, storage, and network requirements.
- Install through that storefront and let it complete any game and anti-cheat updates.
- Check the in-game platform and region settings before inviting console players, because cross-play is limited to supported BATTLEGROUNDS platforms.
For PUBG MOBILE
- Open Google Play or the Apple App Store in the country where you will play.
- Verify that the listing is the official PUBG MOBILE edition and read its current compatibility and regional notes.
- Install over a reliable connection, leave free storage for updates, and grant only the permissions you understand, such as microphone access for voice chat.
- Complete the training mode before entering competitive matches; use the customizable-control screen to place movement, camera, firing, and inventory controls where they are comfortable.
- Test voice chat with a friend and confirm that the edition remains serviceable if you are traveling or have recently changed store-region settings.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Installing an old console version
If a search result or old library entry still mentions PS4 or Xbox One, check the November 2025 transition status. Those versions are no longer current supported targets. Use PS5 or Xbox Series X|S instead.
Assuming the mobile app is the PC game in a smaller window
Both products use the PUBG battle-royale premise, but the mobile listing has its own controls and mode list. Expect mobile-specific interface customization, training, and voice-chat features, and do not assume identical maps, balance, or update timing.
Expecting purchases or rank to follow you across products
The official sources do not establish cross-title progression or purchase sharing. Treat an installation on a different product as a separate service unless a specific publisher announcement says otherwise.

Download availability is not the same as service availability. Regional editions can be limited to their territory, as the Korean and Japanese support statements demonstrate. Read the local support article before travel or a store-country change.
Using publisher specifications as independent performance tests
The listed 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p figures are specifications from the 2025 notice. They are not independent tests of frame-rate stability, image quality in every scene, latency, or loading time. Your display, settings, network, and later patches can affect the result.
Bottom line for different players
For a PC or current-generation console, BATTLEGROUNDS is the relevant product: it uses traditional keyboard, mouse, or controller input and supports the current PS5 and Xbox Series X|S generation. For a phone or tablet, PUBG MOBILE is the relevant product: it adds touch customization and mobile-listed modes such as Classic, Arena, Payload, Infection, training, and voice chat. They share a recognizable battle-royale foundation, but they are not interchangeable clients. Check the live store listing and regional support rules before installing, especially when traveling or changing devices.
