PSB iQ2 vs Sonos Era 300: Which Streaming Speaker Is Right for You?

Choose the PSB iQ2 if you want a real left/right stereo system, built-in phono and HDMI eARC, or BluOS multiroom. Choose the Sonos Era 300 if you prefer one speaker, Dolby Atmos spatial audio, AirPlay 2, and the Sonos ecosystem. They are different kinds of systems, so comparing one iQ2 cabinet with one Era 300 is misleading: the iQ2 is sold as a powered pair, while the Era 300 is a single speaker.

The short answer

Priority Better fit Why
Conventional stereo imaging PSB iQ2 Two powered cabinets provide dedicated left and right channels.
One-box simplicity Sonos Era 300 A single powered speaker handles playback and can be expanded within the Sonos system.
Turntable without an extra preamp PSB iQ2 It has a moving-magnet (MM) phono input.
TV connection PSB iQ2 HDMI eARC is built in; the Era 300’s USB-C line-in is not intended for TV.
Dolby Atmos music Sonos Era 300 Sonos positions it as a spatial-audio speaker with upward-, forward- and side-firing drivers.
AirPlay 2 Sonos Era 300 AirPlay 2 is listed as a native feature.
BluOS multiroom PSB iQ2 The pair plays with BluOS-compatible products and accesses more than 20 listed streaming services.
Lowest current US entry price Sonos Era 300 The current manufacturer listing is $499 for one speaker; the iQ2 listing is $1,699 for a pair.

Those prices are manufacturer listings observed in 2026 and can change. The iQ2 price buys two speakers; the Era 300 price buys one.

What you are actually comparing

PSB iQ2: a powered stereo pair

The iQ2 is a “true wireless stereo pair.” One cabinet is the left channel and the other is the right channel; they link wirelessly while operating as one system. Each cabinet contains a 4-inch woofer and a ¾-inch aluminum-dome tweeter in a bass-reflex enclosure. PSB rates the complete system at 270 watts: 45 watts per tweeter and 90 watts per woofer, for each speaker’s two-way amplification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its physical inputs are unusually broad for a compact streaming system: moving-magnet phono, HDMI eARC, optical, and Bluetooth aptX Adaptive. BluOS supplies network streaming, local-library playback and multiroom control. The pair therefore behaves more like a small component stereo system than a single smart speaker.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Sonos Era 300: one spatial-audio speaker

The Era 300 is one powered cabinet designed around Sonos control and immersive playback. Sonos describes six drivers aimed left, right, forward and upward, with Dolby Atmos support. That arrangement is intended to create a wider, taller presentation from one enclosure; it is not a substitute for two separated left/right speakers in a conventional stereo layout.

The speaker connects over Wi-Fi 6 or Bluetooth 5.3 and supports Apple AirPlay 2. Control is available through the Sonos app, Sonos Voice Control and Amazon Alexa, although voice-service availability depends on language and country. Trueplay room correction analyzes the room with an iOS or Android device and adjusts the speaker’s EQ.

Inputs and source connections

Vinyl and other analog sources

The iQ2 is the straightforward choice for a moving-magnet turntable. Connect the turntable’s RCA cables to the pair’s phono MM input and attach the ground wire if your turntable provides one. A turntable with a moving-coil cartridge, or one without a suitable output level, may still require an external phono stage; the listed input is specifically MM.

The Era 300 has no built-in phono input. Analog playback requires the separately sold Sonos Line-In Adapter plus a 3.5 mm auxiliary cable. You would still need a turntable with its own phono preamp or a separate phono preamp. Sonos says this line-in path is not intended for TV, so it is best treated as an occasional music-input solution rather than a general-purpose AV input.

Television

With the iQ2, run an HDMI cable from the television’s HDMI ARC/eARC socket to the speaker system. HDMI eARC can carry TV audio and lets compatible televisions send volume commands through the HDMI link. Optical is available when the television lacks ARC/eARC or when you prefer that connection.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

The Era 300 product information lists USB-C line-in through an adapter but explicitly says that connection is not intended for TV. If your goal is a television system, verify the current Sonos-compatible soundbar or home-theater route rather than planning to feed TV audio through the Era 300’s analog adapter.

Optical, Bluetooth and network playback

Optical gives the iQ2 a useful digital connection for older televisions, CD players or streamers that provide optical output. Bluetooth aptX Adaptive handles direct playback from compatible devices, while BluOS handles network sources.

The Era 300 offers Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 6 and AirPlay 2. AirPlay is especially convenient for Apple-device households, while Bluetooth is useful for guests or devices that are not signed in to the Sonos app. Neither product’s cited specifications establish every codec or service combination, so check the current service and device compatibility lists for your country.

BluOS versus Sonos: choose around the ecosystem

When BluOS makes more sense

PSB says BluOS provides access to more than 20 streaming services, local music-library playback and synchronized playback with BluOS-enabled products. That is attractive if you already own BluOS equipment or want a networked system that includes traditional stereo components. Service catalogs and features vary by country and software version, so confirm that your preferred service appears in the current BluOS listing before buying.

The iQ2’s two-speaker arrangement also suits listeners who want a fixed listening position with a defined center image. The cabinets can be separated across a shelf or stand, allowing you to set the left-right spacing rather than relying on a single enclosure to create width.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Sonos makes more sense

Era 300 fits households already using Sonos speakers and the Sonos app. It can join compatible Sonos products for room-to-room playback, and compatible Sonos soundbars can use Era 300 units as surrounds. Confirm the current surround compatibility list and the availability of Dolby Atmos content before designing a home-theater system around it.

Sonos’s platform also adds AirPlay 2, voice-control options and Trueplay. Voice features vary by language and region, and streaming-service support can change with service agreements and software updates. Check the current Sonos app list for your services rather than assuming that every service is available everywhere.

Spatial audio and stereo are different goals

Sonos markets Era 300 as a Dolby Atmos spatial-audio speaker. Its launch announcement says six drivers direct sound left, right, forward and upward. Atmos music must be available from a compatible service and playback path for that capability to matter; ordinary stereo tracks will not automatically become multichannel Atmos recordings.

The iQ2 instead provides two conventional channels. Its product page specifies 64 Hz–20 kHz on-axis response within ±3 dB and a −10 dB low-frequency cutoff of 35 Hz. Those numbers describe the manufacturer’s test conditions and are not a prediction of how either product will sound in every room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no controlled, independent head-to-head measurement in the cited product material. Promotional statements—such as PSB’s description of “real stereo performance” and Sonos’s claim that spatial audio is “the next evolution in listening”—are manufacturer positioning. They should not be read as laboratory proof that one product sounds better than the other.

Room size, placement and furniture checks

Planning for the iQ2 pair

Each iQ2 cabinet measures 5.7 inches wide, 9.7 inches high and 7.6 inches deep (145 × 246 × 192 mm). The listed net weight is 16.2 pounds (7.36 kg) per pair. You need two stable surfaces or stands, power near both positions and enough separation for a left/right image. Keep the bass-reflex openings clear and leave room to reach the rear connections.

Its compact width makes it easier to place on a desk or media console, but the pair occupies more horizontal space than one Era 300. Measure the distance between shelves, allow for cable bends and verify that both speakers can face the listening position.

Planning for Era 300

Era 300 measures 10.24 inches wide, 7.28 inches high and 6.30 inches deep (260 × 185 × 160 mm) and weighs 9.85 pounds (4.47 kg). It is taller and wider than one iQ2 cabinet, but you only need one power outlet and one surface for a one-speaker setup. Leave clearance around the cabinet so its upward- and side-directed drivers are not blocked by a shelf or wall.

If you later use two Era 300 units as a stereo pair or surrounds, account for the cost, power outlets and space of the additional speaker. A single Era 300 should not be priced as if it were equivalent to the complete iQ2 pair.

How to set up each system

PSB iQ2 setup checklist

  1. Place the two cabinets on stable surfaces with the intended left and right positions clearly identified.
  2. Connect both speakers to AC power and follow the BluOS setup process in the current BluOS app.
  3. For a turntable, use the MM phono input; confirm that the turntable has the appropriate cartridge output and connect its ground wire if supplied.
  4. For TV, connect HDMI eARC, or use optical when ARC/eARC is unavailable.
  5. For direct device playback, pair through Bluetooth aptX Adaptive; for network playback, sign in to the supported BluOS services or add a local library.
  6. Play a left/right channel test and adjust speaker spacing and toe-in before judging stereo imaging.

Sonos Era 300 setup checklist

  1. Place the Era 300 upright on a solid surface with its top and side areas unobstructed.
  2. Connect power and add the speaker in the current Sonos app over Wi-Fi.
  3. Run Trueplay from an iOS or Android device if you want the room-acoustic adjustment.
  4. Use AirPlay 2, Bluetooth 5.3 or a Sonos service for music playback.
  5. For an analog source, purchase the Sonos Line-In Adapter and a 3.5 mm auxiliary cable; use a turntable with a built-in or external phono preamp.
  6. If you need wired Ethernet, check the separately sold Combo Adapter. Do not plan the USB-C line-in as a TV connection because Sonos says it is not intended for that use.

What each system costs in realistic scenarios

Scenario PSB iQ2 Sonos Era 300
One-room music system $1,699 current US listing for the complete pair $499 current US listing for one speaker
Analog playback MM turntable can connect directly; other cartridge types may need a phono stage Line-In Adapter and 3.5 mm cable sold separately; turntable still needs a phono preamp unless it has one built in
Multiroom expansion Add BluOS-compatible products Add compatible Sonos products
Two-speaker Sonos arrangement Not applicable—the iQ2 is already a pair Requires buying a second Era 300 at the then-current price
Home theater HDMI eARC offers a direct TV connection Era 300 can serve as surrounds with compatible Sonos soundbars; verify current compatibility and Atmos requirements

PSB’s iQ2 launch announcement gave suggested prices of $1,399 for color finishes and $1,499 for Walnut Veneer. Those are historical launch figures, not the current listing. Sonos launched Era 300 at $449 in 2023; the current US listing cited here is $499 per speaker. Inventory, regional taxes and retailer pricing can change both totals.

Which one is better for common buying decisions?

For vinyl

Pick the iQ2 when you want to connect a moving-magnet turntable directly and keep the system self-contained. Choose Era 300 only if you are comfortable adding the line-in adapter and providing phono preamplification.

For a television

The iQ2 has the clearer connection path because HDMI eARC is built in, with optical as an alternative. Era 300’s listed analog input is expressly not intended for TV; a Sonos home-theater configuration may be more appropriate if you want Sonos around a television.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a small apartment or office

One Era 300 needs one surface and one outlet, which can simplify a compact room. The iQ2 pair needs two positions but gives you control over left/right spacing. Measure the available width and check clearance above and beside the Era 300 before choosing based only on footprint.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

For Atmos music

Era 300 is the relevant choice because Dolby Atmos and the six-driver directional design are central to its purpose. Confirm that your streaming service, subscription tier and region actually provide Atmos versions of the music you listen to.

For a traditional stereo listening seat

The iQ2 is designed for this use: two cabinets, dedicated channels and a published stereo frequency-response specification. It is the more natural fit when you want to position speakers around a chair or sofa rather than fill a room from one point.

For Apple devices

Era 300 has native AirPlay 2 support. The iQ2 can still receive music through its listed network and Bluetooth options, but AirPlay 2 is not listed among its specified features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an existing multiroom system

Stay within the platform you already use unless you have a strong reason to switch. iQ2 joins BluOS-compatible products; Era 300 joins compatible Sonos products. Mixing the two ecosystems does not create one unified multiroom group.

Important limitations before you buy

  • Do not compare unit counts incorrectly. The $499 Era 300 price is for one speaker; the $1,699 iQ2 price is for a pair.
  • Do not assume every streaming service or Atmos album is available. Availability varies by country, service agreements and software support.
  • Do not treat manufacturer specifications as independent tests. Power, frequency response and driver counts describe intended capabilities, not a controlled listening result.
  • Check adapter costs. Era 300’s line-in and Ethernet options use separately sold adapters; the iQ2’s phono, HDMI eARC and optical connections are listed as built-in.
  • Check home-theater compatibility. Era 300 surround use depends on compatible Sonos soundbars and the content path’s Atmos support.
  • Measure before ordering. Include stand or shelf depth, cable clearance, wall distance and the space needed for two iQ2 cabinets or a future second Era 300.
  • Confirm current colors and inventory. PSB lists Black, White, Ember Red, Boreal Green, Granite Grey, Sandstone Beige and Walnut Veneer, but availability can change.

Final decision framework

Buy the PSB iQ2 when your must-haves are genuine left/right stereo, a built-in MM phono input, HDMI eARC, optical input, or BluOS multiroom. Its higher current US price reflects a complete two-speaker system, and its two-cabinet layout requires more placement planning.

Buy the Sonos Era 300 when you want a single-speaker starting point, Dolby Atmos spatial audio, AirPlay 2, voice-control options or an upgrade path into compatible Sonos home theater. Budget separately for the line-in adapter if you need analog input, and remember that one Era 300 is not a conventional stereo pair.

Neither is a universal sound-quality winner on the available evidence. The deciding question is whether your room, sources and preferred multiroom platform fit a powered stereo pair or a spatial-audio smart speaker.
