Yes—on Android, a verified phone number can be added to every Google Account signed in on the same device. Google documents the device-level behavior, while an October 14, 2026 report describes automatic association and an opt-out setting. This links the number to account features; it does not, by itself, publish your number to other people.
What Google is linking, and where
Google Account Help states that “Any verified phone numbers for an Android device can be added to any Google Account that is signed into that device.” In practice, that can include your main account, a personal secondary account, a work account and an account you use only temporarily.

The reported behavior is tied to the Android device, not just to the account where you first entered the number. If several Google Accounts are active on one phone, each can become eligible for the device’s verified number. Google’s documentation establishes that capability; the current report describes automatic association as the behavior rolling out to users.
What the number enables
Google says a phone number can be used to sign in, reset a password and help people connect with you across Google services. Its phone-number consent information also lists receiving video calls and messages. Google may periodically verify the number using device information or an SMS check.

- Authentication: the number can support sign-in and account-recovery flows.
- Account recovery: it can be retained as a recovery phone, subject to Google’s verification and account settings.
- Communication features: people who already have your number may be able to find or connect with you in Google communication services, including video-calling and messaging apps.
Google’s developer documentation explicitly says that adding the number “won’t make your phone number visible to others.” The linkage therefore should not be described as a public disclosure. It is an association inside Google’s account and service systems, with discoverability features controlled separately.
How to check whether an account has the number
- Open the Google Account settings for one signed-in account.
- Go to Personal info, then open the Phone section.
- Inspect the number’s Usage area. If it says Across Google, Google indicates that the number can be used across Google services.
- Repeat the check for every personal, secondary, work or alternate account currently signed in on the Android phone.
Do not assume that checking only the account you use most often is sufficient. The documented scope is every Google Account signed in on the device, and the October 14, 2026 report specifically includes secondary and work accounts in the automatic-association behavior.

How to remove the number or limit its use
Remove cross-service use
In each account’s Personal info → Phone page, select the number and remove it if that account should not use it across Google services. This is a per-account cleanup step; removing the number from one account does not remove it from other accounts on the phone.
Keep it only for recovery
If you still want the number for password recovery, Google’s documented sequence is to remove it from the general Phone section and then add it again in the Recovery phone section. Follow the verification prompts shown for that account. This separates recovery use from the broader “Across Google” setting as far as the available controls allow.

Stop future automatic associations on Android
- Open the Android Settings app and enter the Google settings area.
- Find the phone-number verification control. On supported devices it is labeled Verify phone numbers automatically.
- Turn the setting off and confirm the change if Android asks.
Menu names and availability can vary by Android release, device, region and account configuration. The reported control is intended to prevent future automatic associations; it does not clean up numbers that are already attached. Existing links still have to be removed manually from each account’s Phone page.

Google does not publish a quantified privacy-risk score for these choices. The practical trade-off is convenience and recovery resilience versus keeping accounts independent when they share an Android device.

What is confirmed—and what is not
- Confirmed by Google: a verified Android-device number can be added to any Google Account signed in on that device.
- Confirmed by Google: the number supports sign-in, password recovery and connection features, and Google provides controls to view and remove it.
- Currently reported: Android can associate the active number automatically across signed-in accounts, with a Verify phone numbers automatically switch available in some configurations.
- Not established: a universal rollout date, the percentage of devices affected, the number of affected users or a claim that the number becomes publicly visible.
Google’s privacy policy also says it collects mobile-network information, including carrier name and phone number, and may save signed-in activity to an account depending on your settings. That policy context explains why device and account data can be connected, but it does not show that this specific feature exposes your number publicly.

If the number keeps coming back
- Check every Google Account signed in on the phone; an account you overlooked may still hold the number.
- Confirm that Verify phone numbers automatically is off where the control exists.
- Recheck the Usage area after removing the number. A displayed Across Google label indicates that cross-service use remains enabled for that account.
- For a managed work account, administrator policies or a different account interface may limit which controls are shown.
- If Android does not show the toggle, treat that as a version, device, region or account-configuration difference rather than proof that existing links were removed.
Why this matters on shared-account phones
People often sign into multiple accounts for work, personal use, testing or family administration. A device-level verification system can blur those boundaries even when you entered the number for only one purpose. Review the Phone page on each account, decide whether the number belongs across Google, for recovery only or nowhere on that account, and then disable automatic verification if your Android configuration offers the control.
