PS6 RAM and storage costs reportedly exceed $680—but that is not the console’s price

The reported PS6 RAM cost and PS6 SSD (NAND storage) cost have exceeded $680 combined, according to an unverified leaker claim. That figure covers only two component groups, not the processor, graphics hardware, cooling system, power supply, case, controller, assembly or distribution. A separate, also unverified calculation puts the entire PlayStation 6 bill of materials near $960, but Sony has not confirmed either figure, the PS6 price estimate or a PS6 launch date.

What the “over $680” PS6 cost actually covers

On October 17, 2026, OC3D reported that a leaker claimed Sony’s memory costs for the PS6—RAM plus NAND flash storage—are now “over $680.” In practical terms, this is a combined estimate for the console’s working memory and its built-in storage. It is not a quote for a complete PlayStation 6 and does not establish what buyers will pay.

RAM and NAND are two different component classes

  • RAM: high-speed working memory used by the operating system and games while they run.
  • NAND storage: the flash memory used for the console’s installed games, saved data and system software; this is the part commonly described as the PS6 SSD cost, even though the NAND chips are only one element of a finished SSD module.

The claim does not disclose the capacity, memory type, supplier, contract terms or production volume behind the $680 figure. Without those details, it cannot be independently checked or used as a firm parts quote.

What is not included

OC3D explicitly said the amount does not account for the CPU, GPU or other components. It therefore also leaves out the motherboard, firmware storage, cooling hardware, power electronics, chassis, optical drive if Sony offers one, controller, packaging, assembly, shipping, warranty provision, retailer margin and taxes. Even a genuine component quote for RAM and NAND would be only one slice of the console’s cost structure.

Why another estimate approaches $960

The near-$960 number comes from a separate chain of estimates rather than an official Sony document. TechSpot reported that leaker KeplerL2 put a possible PS6 bill of materials at about $760 in March 2026. A June update reportedly added roughly $200, pushing the estimate close to four digits. Igor’s Lab then described approximately $960 as a figure derived from that chronology.

Claim or calculation Amount What it represents Status
RAM plus NAND Over $680 Two memory and storage component classes only Leaker claim summarized by OC3D; unverified
Earlier PS6 BOM estimate About $760 Reported total bill of materials KeplerL2 estimate reported by TechSpot in March 2026
Later increase About $200 Reported change to the earlier BOM estimate June 2026 update reported by TechSpot
Derived total About $960 Arithmetic based on the reported $760 estimate plus roughly $200 Igor’s Lab calculation; not a disclosed parts list or supplier quote

Igor’s Lab cautioned that the $960 result came from a single forum post and had no parts list or supplier confirmation. It should therefore be described as a derived BOM estimate, not Sony’s manufacturing cost. The arithmetic also does not prove that every cost moved at the same time or that the estimate applies to a finalized retail design.

Why a bill of materials does not equal the PS6 retail price

A bill of materials is the theoretical cost of the physical parts. A manufacturer’s full production cost adds labor, factory overhead, testing, logistics, software support, warranty reserves and other expenses. The retail price then reflects distribution, retailer margins, taxes and Sony’s pricing strategy.

Sony could respond to expensive memory in several ways:

  • Negotiate lower prices or different supply commitments before mass production.
  • Change RAM or storage capacity, memory configuration or other specifications.
  • Sell hardware at a loss to build a user base, recovering money through games and services.
  • Set a higher launch price, introduce multiple models or delay the release.
  • Absorb some costs in one region while adjusting prices elsewhere for currency and tax differences.

That is why “will PS6 cost $1,000?” cannot be answered from the $680 claim. A near-$960 component estimate would create serious pricing pressure, but it does not mechanically turn into a $960 or $1,000 checkout price.

What Sony has—and has not—confirmed

In an August 18, 2026 report, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said the company had not decided when to launch the new console or at what prices. The same report quoted him saying memory prices were expected to remain very high in fiscal 2027 because supply would still be short, requiring Sony to think carefully about its plans.

Those comments provide context for the PS6 RAM cost story, not confirmation of a specification or price. Sony has not publicly fixed a PS6 launch date, retail price, memory capacity or storage capacity in the information available here. No official PS6 listing or compatible accessory can therefore be verified.

PS5 Pro is a real price reference—not PS6 evidence

For a current product comparison, TechSpot reported the PlayStation 5 Pro at a retail price of $899 in 2026. That gives shoppers a concrete high-end PlayStation alternative available now, but it is not evidence that the PS6 will cost $899, more than $899 or less than it.

The decision is straightforward: buy the current console if its performance and software meet your needs, or wait if you specifically want the next generation and can tolerate an unknown launch schedule, specification and price. Treat any retailer page claiming to sell a PS6 or a PS6-specific accessory as unverified until Sony announces the hardware.

How to evaluate the next PS6 price estimate

  1. Identify the number’s scope. Check whether it covers RAM and NAND only, a complete BOM, manufacturing, or a retail price.
  2. Look for a parts list. Capacity, chip type, supplier and production assumptions are needed to assess a memory estimate.
  3. Separate source types. Sony statements are confirmations; leaker posts and calculations are forecasts.
  4. Check the date. Memory pricing can change before a console enters volume production, especially during a supply shortage.
  5. Wait for Sony’s specification and price announcement. Only then can the PS6 SSD cost, RAM configuration and launch price be treated as established facts.

The bottom line on the $680 claim

“Over $680” is a reported, unverified estimate for PS6 RAM plus NAND storage. The approximately $960 figure is a separate calculation based on an earlier leaker estimate and a reported $200 increase. Neither figure is an official Sony manufacturing cost or retail-price announcement, and the PS6 launch date and price remain open.
