Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShort answer: Buy the PS5 if the PlayStation games you want, your existing PS4 library, or supported DualSense features matter most. Buy the Xbox Series X if your Xbox purchases, a specific backward-compatible game, Smart Delivery, or the Xbox ecosystem is more important. If neither library decides the issue, compare the exact local model, disc requirement, storage, subscriptions and complete ownership cost; there is no evidence-backed universal winner.
Start with the games you will actually play
Console specifications matter only after the software decision. Write down the five to ten games you expect to play most, then check each title’s platform, edition, cross-generation support, save-transfer rules and online requirements. A game being available somewhere in a publisher’s wider catalog does not guarantee that your preferred edition, add-ons or saved progress will transfer.

When the PS5 is the better fit
- You specifically want PlayStation titles that are not available on Xbox.
- You already own digital or disc-based PS4 games and want to keep using them.
- You care about games that support the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
- Your friends, existing voice-chat groups or multiplayer purchases are already on PlayStation.
Sony’s current PS5 product page lists PS5 console-exclusive games and says that more than 8,500 PS4 games are playable on PS5. Sony also says Game Boost improves frame rates in selected PS4 games. That is a useful compatibility signal, but the number is not a measure of how many new games you will prefer, and it should not be compared directly with Microsoft’s different “thousands of games” wording.
When the Xbox Series X is the better fit
- You own Xbox games or have a long Xbox account history you want to preserve.
- A particular supported Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One or Series title is central to your decision.
- You want Smart Delivery for supported games, so the console can provide the appropriate version when you own a qualifying game.
- Your household already uses Xbox services, accessories or multiplayer groups.
Microsoft says Xbox Series X is compatible with thousands of games across four generations of Xbox. Microsoft also describes Smart Delivery for supported games. “Thousands” and “over 8,500” are not equivalent measurements: Sony’s figure is explicitly about PS4 games playable on PS5, while Microsoft’s statement spans four Xbox generations. Verify every must-have title in the relevant store or publisher support page before buying.

Compare the current models, not just the console names
Both product families have format and capacity differences. The model shown on a retailer page can change by country, bundle and production run, so check the exact model number and included accessories before paying.
| Model or configuration | Disc support | Storage listed by the manufacturer | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 disc console | Built-in drive plays PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray game discs; it also downloads digital games. | 1TB | Sony’s current product page lists this configuration. Exact regional bundles and availability can change. |
| PS5 Digital Edition | No built-in disc drive. Sony lists a separately sold drive option for specified slim model groups. | 825GB | Disc-drive compatibility depends on the specified slim model group; confirm the listing before ordering. |
| Xbox Series X, 1TB | UHD Blu-ray disc player included on Series X configurations identified by Microsoft. | 1TB SSD | Microsoft’s current Series X page lists this capacity. |
| Xbox Series X, 2TB | UHD Blu-ray disc player on the Series X configuration identified by Microsoft. | 2TB SSD | Microsoft lists a 2TB option; exact market availability should be checked locally. |
Storage figures are capacity labels, not the amount available after the operating system and reserved space. Game sizes, patches and optional texture packs can consume hundreds of gigabytes, so leave room for updates rather than planning to fill the drive completely.
Decide whether you need physical games
Choose a disc model if you buy, borrow or resell discs
A disc drive is valuable when you buy used games, borrow from friends, trade titles, collect physical editions or watch Blu-ray movies. It also gives you a choice between a disc and a digital sale when prices differ. A disc usually remains necessary to authenticate a physical license after installation; it does not eliminate downloads for patches or additional content.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The PS5 disc console plays PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray game discs. Xbox Series X configurations identified by Microsoft include a UHD Blu-ray player. If you already own a large disc collection, count those games as part of the console’s value rather than treating the machine price in isolation.
Choose a digital model only after checking your library
The PS5 Digital Edition has no built-in drive. You cannot insert an existing PS4 or PS5 disc into it, and a digital purchase normally cannot be replaced by a disc you already own. Sony lists a separately sold disc-drive option for specified slim model groups, but that option is model-specific and adds to the total cost. Confirm that the exact console and drive are compatible in your market.
Digital ownership is convenient for instant downloads and remote purchases, but it ties access to the relevant account and store. Check which account owns each game before changing platforms; a disc collection cannot be converted automatically into digital entitlements.
A significant Sony format notice for 2028
Sony’s current PS5 product page contains this policy notice:
“From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only.”
The same notice says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. This is Sony’s stated policy on the current page, not evidence that an existing PS5 disc drive will stop working. If buying mainly for future physical releases, check Sony’s policy again at the time of purchase because format plans and regional terms can change.
Storage: capacity, expansion and practical library size
How the listed capacities affect you
Sony lists a 1TB PS5 disc console and an 825GB PS5 Digital Edition. Microsoft lists Xbox Series X with 1TB or 2TB SSD configurations. The larger Xbox option can reduce the frequency of uninstalling games, but capacity alone does not determine value: the price difference, the size of your installed library and the cost of expansion matter more.

Estimate your requirement from the games you keep installed simultaneously. Include local multiplayer games, frequently updated service games, captures and free space for patches. If you regularly rotate single-player titles, the smaller drive may be adequate; if you want a large always-installed library, start with the 2TB Xbox option or budget for expansion.

Microsoft identifies a dedicated Storage Expansion Card that adds game storage at the same performance as the console’s custom SSD. The same product information also supports external hard drives, but it does not state that external drives match the expansion card’s performance. Treat “external storage” and “expansion card” as different choices: an external drive can be useful for holding games, while the dedicated card is the explicitly identified option for matching internal-SSD performance.
Sony’s product page in the reviewed material establishes the two PS5 capacities and the optional drive for specified slim models, but it does not provide a comparable expansion-price or performance table. Check the current console support documentation for compatible internal expansion hardware before purchase. Do not assume that an accessory designed for Xbox will work on PS5, or vice versa.
Subscriptions: compare the games you will use, not the service names
Subscriptions change by region, tier and month. Sony describes PlayStation Plus as multiple plans with a changing PS5 and PS4 game library. The current Xbox Game Pass tier prices and catalog details were not established in the product information reviewed here, so a categorical claim that one service is cheaper or better would be unreliable.
A practical subscription comparison
- Open the current service page for your country and record the monthly and annual price of each tier you would realistically buy.
- Make a list of games you would actually start within the next three months.
- Mark which games are included, which require a higher tier and which leave the catalog during the period.
- Subtract games you already own or would buy on disc; do not count a nominal catalog title as value if you will never play it.
- Add the cost of online multiplayer access where the specific game requires it, then compare the resulting annual total with buying the games outright.
Use the same method on both platforms. A large catalog is not automatically a saving if your preferred games are absent, rotate out before you finish them or require a tier you would not otherwise choose.
Controller and platform features
DualSense on PS5
Sony describes haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and 3D Audio support for PS5. These are game-dependent features: a title must implement them for you to experience them. Check the feature list for the particular games you care about rather than assuming every PS5 release uses every capability. If local multiplayer is important, include the price of additional controllers in your budget; the console comparison alone does not establish accessory pricing.
Xbox Series X features
Microsoft describes Xbox Velocity Architecture, Quick Resume and frame rates of up to 120 frames per second for Series X|S. “Up to 120 FPS” is a supported capability, not a guarantee that every game runs at that rate. Resolution, frame-rate modes, television support and developer settings determine the result for each title. Quick Resume is most useful if you switch among several supported games; it is not a substitute for checking a game’s own save and online-session behavior.
Why the feature lists do not identify a performance winner
Sony’s ultra-high-speed SSD and Microsoft’s Velocity Architecture are manufacturer descriptions, not a controlled, game-by-game benchmark. Loading times, resolution and frame rate vary by title, patch, display mode and developer implementation. The evidence here does not establish that one console is faster across all games. Choose the feature that changes how you play, then verify specific titles.
Backward compatibility and account history
Backward compatibility is more than a headline count. Check whether your copy is disc or digital, whether downloadable content is preserved, whether achievements or trophies carry over, and whether cloud saves require an active service. Sony’s “over 8,500 PS4 games” statement confirms broad PS4 support, while Microsoft’s four-generation statement confirms a broad Xbox catalog. Neither statement guarantees support for every game, region, peripheral or discontinued online mode.
Questions to answer before switching platforms
- Which account owns each digital game?
- Can your existing save be transferred, and is cross-save supported?
- Will your headset, racing wheel or other accessory work on the new console?
- Are your friends playing the same edition and platform?
- Does the game’s multiplayer service remain active?
Write down the answers for your three most-played games. If one platform preserves all three while the other requires repurchasing or starting over, that switching cost can outweigh a modest hardware-price difference.

Calculate the total cost in your market
No current universal price comparison can be stated from the reviewed pages. Retail prices, taxes, bundles, stock and promotions differ by country and date. Compare complete ownership costs rather than a headline console price.
| Cost item | PS5 questions | Xbox Series X questions |
|---|---|---|
| Console model | Is it the 1TB disc console or 825GB Digital Edition? Is a drive included? | Is it the 1TB or 2TB SSD model, and is the UHD Blu-ray drive included? |
| Games | Which must-have games are already in your PS4/PlayStation account or disc shelf? | Which Xbox-generation games or Smart Delivery entitlements do you already own? |
| Subscription | Which current PlayStation Plus tier includes the games you will use? | Which current Xbox subscription tier, if any, includes the games you will use? |
| Storage | Will 825GB or 1TB meet your installed-library needs? What compatible expansion is available? | Is the 1TB model sufficient, or is the 2TB model cheaper than adding the dedicated expansion card later? |
| Accessories | Do you need an extra DualSense, headset or charging accessory? | Do you need an extra controller, headset or storage card? |
| Physical media | Do you need the disc console or a compatible separately sold drive for a specified slim model? | Does the Series X UHD Blu-ray configuration meet your disc and movie needs? |
Use prices from the same country, include tax and delivery, and record the date. A bundle with a game you would buy anyway can be better value than a lower-priced bare console, while a bundle for a game you do not want is not a saving.
A decision process that takes 15 minutes
- List non-negotiable games. Include the exact edition and whether you own it physically or digitally.
- Check account and save continuity. Confirm cross-save, multiplayer platform and accessory support for those games.
- Choose physical or digital first. If you use discs, remove digital-only models from consideration unless the approved optional drive fits your exact model.
- Choose storage. Compare the listed PS5 capacity with the 1TB and 2TB Xbox options, then price the expansion you would actually use.
- Price subscriptions using your play list. Use current regional pages and count only games you expect to play.
- Add accessories and first-year games. Include an extra controller, headset, storage and the titles not covered by a service.
- Apply the buyer profile. Select PS5 when PlayStation software, PS4 continuity or DualSense support wins; select Series X when Xbox continuity, Smart Delivery or a specific Xbox catalog wins.
- Recheck stock and policy. Confirm the exact model, included drive, capacity, warranty and any regional format terms on the day you order.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing catalog counts as if they measure the same thing
“Over 8,500 PS4 games” and “thousands of games across four generations” describe different scopes. Use title-by-title checks, not the larger-looking number.

Assuming a disc console makes every game physical
Disc editions can still require downloads, patches and account linking. They also do not turn a disc license into a digital entitlement on another console.
Buying the smallest drive without pricing expansion
The lower-capacity model may cost less initially but become expensive if you immediately need additional storage. Price the console and the storage solution together.
Treating “up to 120 FPS” as a universal output
Frame rate depends on the individual game, mode, display and developer. Check the game’s technical documentation and your television or monitor specifications.
Assuming subscription value is permanent
Catalogs, tiers and prices change. Recalculate using the current local service page and the games you intend to play.

Recommendations by buyer profile
| Buyer profile | More logical starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 owner with a large disc collection | PS5 disc console | It plays PS4 and PS5 Blu-ray game discs and preserves the strongest continuity with that library. |
| Digital-first player who wants PlayStation exclusives | PS5 Digital Edition, if capacity and future drive needs fit | It provides access to PS5 software without a built-in drive; verify the 825GB capacity and optional-drive compatibility. |
| Long-time Xbox owner | Xbox Series X | Microsoft describes support across four Xbox generations and Smart Delivery for supported games. |
| Disc collector who wants UHD Blu-ray | PS5 disc console or Xbox Series X disc configuration | Both manufacturers identify disc-capable options; compare your existing library and local model pricing. |
| Large installed-library player | Xbox Series X 2TB option, if available at a sensible local price | Microsoft lists a 2TB SSD option; compare it with the cost of expansion and your preferred game catalog. |
| Feature-focused player | Choose by supported games | DualSense features and Xbox capabilities are implemented title by title, so the games you play should decide. |
Bottom-line buying rule
Buy the console that keeps the games, accounts, discs and friends you value most. PS5 is the rational choice when PlayStation software, PS4 compatibility or supported DualSense features are decisive. Xbox Series X is the rational choice when Xbox back-catalog access, Smart Delivery, an existing Xbox account or the Xbox hardware and service ecosystem is decisive. When those factors are tied, compare the exact local models and first-year total—including storage, subscriptions, extra controllers, games and the value of physical media—and choose the lower-risk ownership plan.
