The clearest direct comparison found is an older controller-only test in which DualSense averaged 5.75 frames of latency and the Xbox Series X controller averaged 8.75 frames. That result does not measure complete console-to-screen response, and your television, game frame rate, connection mode and settings can have a larger practical effect than the console logo.
The short answer
If you are asking “Is PS5 faster than Xbox Series X for input delay?”, the most accurate answer is: not conclusively. A 2020 WULFF DEN comparison, reported by Tom’s Hardware Italia on 20 November 2020 and updated 9 August 2022, measured average controller latency of 5.75 frames for DualSense and 8.75 frames for the Xbox Series X controller. In that particular setup, DualSense responded sooner.

However, those figures describe one controller path. They do not establish total end-to-end latency from pressing a button to seeing a changed pixel. They do not control for every game, firmware version, wired or wireless connection, display, HDMI path or frame-rate mode. Treat the result as historical controller evidence, not a permanent PS5 victory.
Both consoles support the features that usually matter most on a modern gaming display: HDMI Forum VRR, Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), and HDMI 2.1 output capable of 4K at up to 120Hz when the console, game and display all support it. With equivalent settings, the display and game can outweigh small platform-level differences.

Input latency is a chain, not one console specification
Total response time is built from several stages:
- Controller input: The button press must be detected, processed and transmitted over a wired or wireless link.
- Game and engine processing: The game samples input, runs simulation and prepares a frame. A game running at a lower frame rate generally gives the engine fewer opportunities per second to reflect a new input.
- Console rendering: The system creates and queues the image. Performance modes that target higher frame rates can reduce the wait before an input appears in a frame.
- HDMI transport: The signal travels from the console to the display. Resolution, refresh rate and the chosen HDMI mode affect the path.
- Display processing and scan-out: The television or monitor may add scaling, noise reduction, motion processing and other work before drawing the image.
A test that reports only controller frames measures the first stage and part of the handoff to the game. A display-lag tester measures a display’s response to a changing HDMI signal, not the entire controller-to-photon chain. This is why two credible measurements can both be accurate while answering different questions.
What the strongest direct comparison actually found
The WULFF DEN comparison is the most direct head-to-head figure in the available evidence. Tom’s Hardware Italia reported the averages this way: the Xbox Series X controller produced 8.75 frames of latency, while DualSense produced 5.75 frames. Because the test is from 2020, it should not be treated as a measurement of current firmware or every connection mode.
| Controller | Average latency reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X controller | 8.75 frames | Historical result from the WULFF DEN comparison, as reported by Tom’s Hardware Italia |
| PS5 DualSense | 5.75 frames | Historical result from the same comparison and test path |
The difference is meaningful within that test, but its scope is narrow. The report does not provide a universal conversion into milliseconds for every frame-rate mode, nor does it prove that the same gap appears in every game. It also does not isolate wired operation from wireless operation, identify every firmware version or standardize the display and game conditions sufficiently to turn the result into an end-to-end platform ranking.

Why the display can matter more than the console
RTINGS’ methodology describes good television input lag as under 10 milliseconds at 4K and 120Hz. That figure applies to the display measurement, not to the whole console system. RTINGS also emphasizes that the console, game engine, controller and display each contribute delay.

At 120Hz, one refresh takes 8.33ms. A measurement taken at the center of the screen has a 4.17ms minimum sampling point because the screen is scanned over time rather than illuminated all at once. Consequently, a display’s published number depends on where and how the tester measures it. A top-edge, center-screen and bottom-edge result can differ even when the panel and settings are unchanged.
TechRadar’s approach illustrates another boundary. It commonly uses a Leo Bodnar 4K HDMI Input Lag Tester at 4K/60Hz and 1080p/120Hz, with the television in Game Mode and HDMI 2.1 enabled when available. Those are useful, repeatable display figures, but they are not PS5-versus-Xbox totals. A display tested at 1080p/120Hz cannot be used as proof of its 4K/120Hz behavior, and a television tested in Game Mode cannot represent a slower processing mode.

A 60Hz image refreshes every 16.67ms, while a 120Hz image refreshes every 8.33ms. Higher refresh gives the game and display more frequent opportunities to present a newly rendered frame. It does not automatically make every game low-latency: a title capped at 30 frames per second can still feel slow on a 120Hz panel, and a busy engine can add its own queueing delay.
Game Mode is essential
Game Mode normally bypasses television processing intended for movies, such as extra sharpening, interpolation or noise reduction. Without it, a display can add enough processing to overwhelm a small difference between controllers. Confirm that Game Mode is active for the HDMI input used by each console rather than assuming a global setting applies.
VRR, ALLM and HDMI 2.1: shared tools, not a guaranteed winner
Both PS5 and Xbox Series X support HDMI Forum VRR and ALLM. Compatible HDMI 2.1 displays can accept 4K signals at up to 120Hz. These capabilities help maintain a responsive presentation when a game’s frame rate varies, and ALLM can switch a television into its low-latency mode automatically.

VRR does not remove the time required to render a frame. It synchronizes the display’s refresh with the console’s output within the supported range, reducing judder and avoiding a mismatch between refresh and frame delivery. If a game falls below the display’s VRR range, the experience can change depending on the display’s low-frame-rate handling.

ALLM is a mode-selection feature. It can prevent the common mistake of leaving a console connected to a television’s slower cinema or standard picture mode, but the television still needs a genuinely fast Game Mode. HDMI 2.1 bandwidth is likewise an enabler for 4K/120Hz; it is not itself a promise of low controller-to-photon latency.
Does Xbox Dynamic Latency Input reduce lag?
Xbox Dynamic Latency Input (DLI) is described by What Hi-Fi as a feature intended to synchronize controller input with what appears on screen. That is a feature claim, not evidence that Xbox Series X wins every latency comparison. The same coverage notes that television lag contributes to the result and that isolating DLI’s individual effect is difficult.
In practical terms, DLI can be one part of a responsive Xbox setup, but it cannot compensate for a television in a high-latency picture mode, a game running at a low frame rate or a wireless path with different behavior from the test you are comparing. The only fair way to judge a platform-level difference is to hold those other variables constant and repeat the measurement.
How to compare PS5 and Xbox Series X fairly
If you want an answer for your own setup, use the same conditions for both consoles. A controlled comparison is more useful than quoting a number from an unrelated display review.

- Choose the same game and scene. Use a title available on both systems, the same version where possible and the same in-game performance or quality mode. Do not compare a 120fps mode on one console with a 30fps mode on the other.
- Match the output settings. Set the same resolution target, refresh rate, HDR state and VRR state. If one system is outputting 4K/120Hz and the other is limited to 4K/60Hz, you are testing display timing and game modes as much as consoles.
- Match controller connection. Compare wired with wired or wireless with wireless. Record the controller model and firmware where the test provides that information. Do not mix a wired DualSense result with a wireless Xbox result and call the difference a platform advantage.
- Use one display input and one cable path. Connect each console directly to the same HDMI input when possible, using the same display settings. Avoid an AV receiver, HDMI switch or capture device unless both consoles pass through the identical equipment.
- Verify Game Mode and ALLM. Check the television’s picture menu while each console is active. Automatic mode switching can fail if the HDMI input, cable or console output setting does not support it.
- Measure repeatedly. A single button press or a single frame is not a robust conclusion. Repeat the test in more than one game and report the average, the test equipment and the operating conditions.
This procedure follows the key comparison axes: controller connection and polling behavior, game frame rate and engine latency, measured display lag at the actual resolution and refresh rate, VRR and ALLM behavior, and repeatability across games.
Lowest-latency setup for either console
Start with a display that has a measured low-latency Game Mode. RTINGS uses under 10ms at 4K/120Hz as a useful “good” benchmark for the display component. Look for all of the following:
- 4K/120Hz support if you intend to use the consoles’ highest common output mode.
- HDMI 2.1 bandwidth on the input connected to the console.
- VRR support compatible with the console and the display’s stated refresh range.
- ALLM support, with a manual Game Mode available if automatic switching is unreliable.
- Published measurements at the resolution and refresh rate you actually plan to use.
Connect the console directly to the display where possible. In the display menu, enable Game Mode and disable additional processing that is not needed for games. On the console, select the game’s high-frame-rate or performance mode when responsiveness is more important than maximum visual detail. Enable VRR when the game and display support it, then confirm that the display reports the expected refresh behavior.
A “4K/120Hz” label alone is insufficient. Some displays provide 4K/120Hz only on selected HDMI inputs, and some require a particular enhanced-bandwidth setting. Check the input-specific menu and use a certified cable appropriate for the mode you are testing.
Common causes of unexpected input delay
The television is not in Game Mode
Symptom: Menus and camera movement feel delayed despite a 120Hz-capable panel. Fix: Open the picture mode for the active HDMI input and select Game Mode. Disable motion interpolation and other post-processing that remains enabled.

The console is running a lower frame-rate mode
Symptom: A game feels noticeably less immediate than another title on the same console. Fix: Check the game’s graphics options for Performance, Frame Rate or 120Hz modes. Compare like-for-like modes before judging the hardware.
VRR or 120Hz is not actually active
Symptom: The console reports a 60Hz output or the display’s information panel never shows a variable refresh signal. Fix: Inspect the console video-output settings, the display’s HDMI enhanced mode and the cable path. A receiver or switch may limit bandwidth even when the television supports it.
Extra equipment is in the HDMI path
Symptom: Direct connection feels faster than the normal living-room setup. Fix: Test the console directly into the display, then add the receiver, switch or capture device one item at a time. Keep the same path for both consoles when comparing them.

The comparison mixes controller modes
Symptom: One console appears faster only when a particular controller is used. Fix: Repeat with matching wired or wireless conditions and note the exact controller model. Controller-specific results cannot automatically be generalized to the console.
Which console should latency-sensitive players choose?
For competitive players choosing only on measured responsiveness, the evidence does not justify a universal PS5-or-Xbox verdict. The historical controller test favors DualSense, but it is too limited and old to establish current end-to-end superiority. Xbox’s DLI is designed to align controller input with on-screen action, yet the available description does not isolate its contribution from television and game delay.
Choose based on the complete setup you can control:
- Select the console that offers the performance mode and frame rate you prefer in the games you actually play.
- Use the same low-latency display and HDMI configuration for either platform.
- Prefer a wired controller connection when your own testing shows a repeatable improvement and the game supports it.
- Judge responsiveness across several games rather than one controller figure or one title.
With a fast 4K/120Hz display in Game Mode, direct HDMI connection, matching VRR/ALLM settings and equivalent game modes, the practical difference may be smaller than the variation introduced by the game engine or display.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBottom line
DualSense measured lower latency than the Xbox Series X controller in the best-known direct comparison, averaging 5.75 versus 8.75 frames in a 2020 WULFF DEN test reported by Tom’s Hardware Italia. That is useful historical evidence, but it is not a complete console-to-photon measurement and cannot prove that PS5 is always faster. Both consoles provide VRR, ALLM and 4K/120Hz support with compatible HDMI 2.1 displays. For the lowest real-world delay, prioritize a measured low-latency Game Mode, a high-refresh performance mode, a direct HDMI path and a controlled, like-for-like comparison.
