Xbox Series X is the better choice for game compatibility overall. Its backward-compatibility program reaches Xbox One and a selected catalog of Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games, giving it more generation breadth than PS5.
PS5 is the better fit if your priority is a large PS4 collection. Sony says the console runs the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games, but a small exception list remains, physical PS4 discs require the disc-drive model, and there is no comparable native support documented for PS1, PS2, or PS3 discs.

The compatibility difference in one table
| Decision point | PS5 | Xbox Series X |
|---|---|---|
| Previous-generation coverage | Sony describes the playable catalog as the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games, with a small PS4-only exception list. | Xbox One games are supported, alongside selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles. |
| Older generations | No comparable native PS1, PS2, or PS3 disc compatibility is documented in Sony’s cited support material. | Selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games work through the backward-compatibility catalog. |
| Physical discs | PS4 discs work only with a PS5 that has a disc drive; they cannot be used on PS5 Digital Edition. | A disc works only when its game is in the supported catalog and the console has the required disc hardware. |
| Digital ownership | PS4 digital purchases appear in the PS5 game library after signing in to the same account. Eligible games may offer a PS5 upgrade. | Smart Delivery can provide the supported game’s best version across Xbox generations. |
| Performance features | Selected PS4 games receive PS5 Game Boost, which can raise or smooth frame rates. | System-link play can work between generations when the individual game supports that feature. |
The table shows why “better compatibility” depends on the age and format of your collection. Xbox wins on the number of generations it attempts to cover; PS5 delivers a very high success rate within the immediately preceding PS4 generation.

How Xbox Series X backward compatibility works
Xbox One is the foundation
Xbox Series X is designed to carry forward Xbox One games, so an owner with a recent Xbox library has a broad starting point. Compatibility is still a title-level matter: a game should be checked against Xbox’s supported catalog rather than assumed to work solely because it was released for Xbox One.

For supported games, your ownership can be physical or digital. A digital purchase is associated with the Microsoft account that owns it, while a disc serves as the license check when inserted into a console with compatible disc hardware. The important distinction is that the game must be listed as supported; an Xbox disc is not automatically playable simply because it is an Xbox-branded disc.
Selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games
The extra generation reach is Xbox Series X’s decisive advantage. Microsoft’s catalog includes selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games, allowing some much older releases to run on current hardware. “Selected” is the critical word: the program is not universal, and an unlisted Xbox 360 or Original Xbox title should be treated as unsupported.
This approach is different from a blanket promise that every older disc will work. Before buying a used game or relying on a childhood collection, identify the exact title and edition in the current compatibility catalog. Regional releases, bundled versions, and games with separate editions can produce different results, so match the listing as closely as possible.

Smart Delivery and version selection
Microsoft introduced Smart Delivery in 2020 to ensure that, for supported games, you play the best version available for your Xbox console across generations. In practical terms, one purchase can provide the appropriate Xbox One or Xbox Series version instead of requiring you to choose a generation-specific build manually.
Smart Delivery applies only where a publisher has enabled it. It should not be interpreted as a universal upgrade promise for every Xbox game, nor as proof that an older title is backward compatible. First establish that the game is supported; then check what version and features the publisher supplies.
Cross-generation system-link play
Xbox’s compatibility program can preserve system-link multiplayer across generations when the individual game supports that feature. That makes it possible for players on different Xbox generations to connect in the cases where the game’s own networking design allows it. It is a game-specific capability, not a guarantee that every old multiplayer title will connect.

What Xbox Series X does not promise
- It does not play every Xbox 360 or Original Xbox game.
- It does not make an unsupported disc work through a system update.
- Smart Delivery does not automatically apply to games whose publishers have not enabled it.
- Compatibility lists can change, so an older purchase should be checked against the current official catalog.
How PS5 backward compatibility works
The PS4 catalog is the strength
Sony’s official support wording says that PS5 is backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of PlayStation 4 games. Sony describes the catalog as more than 4,000 PS4 games, making PS4 continuity the central reason to choose PS5 for an existing PlayStation owner.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“Overwhelming majority” is not the same as every game. Sony maintains a small list of PS4-only titles, and it warns that some games may lose functionality or display errors when played on PS5. Check the specific game before assuming that every mode, peripheral, or online feature behaves exactly as it did on PS4.
Using PS4 discs
A physical PS4 disc requires a PS5 model with a disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition has no optical drive, so it cannot read a PS4 disc, even when the digital version of that game is available from the PlayStation Store.
When you use a disc-compatible PS5, insert the PS4 disc and follow the console’s installation instructions. The disc remains necessary as the ownership check whenever you play. If you own a collection of boxed PS4 games, the disc-drive distinction should be settled before choosing a console; adding digital purchases later is not an equivalent solution for discs you already own.
Using PS4 digital games
PS4 digital games associated with your PlayStation Network account appear in the PS5 game library after you sign in with that same account. Download the supported title from the library rather than purchasing it again. Keep in mind that a game’s availability is tied to the account and region in which it was purchased.

Game Boost
Selected PS4 games benefit from PS5 Game Boost, which can raise or smooth frame rates. The feature is not a universal enhancement and does not mean that every PS4 game receives a higher resolution, faster loading, or a redesigned PS5 version. Treat it as a title-specific benefit and consult the game’s own compatibility information for exact behavior.
What PS5 does not provide
The cited Sony support material does not document comparable native disc compatibility for PS1, PS2, or PS3 games. A PS3 disc therefore should not be expected to run simply because the console plays most PS4 software. Older PlayStation games may have separate re-releases or streaming arrangements, but those are different products from inserting the original disc and are not covered by the PS4 backward-compatibility claim.
Physical-disc owners: which console is safer?
If your shelf is mostly PS4 discs
Choose a PS5 with a disc drive if preserving that library is the main goal. Sony’s high PS4 compatibility rate means most of the collection should carry forward, while the exception list identifies the games that need special checking. A PS5 Digital Edition is unsuitable for this use because it cannot read the discs.
If your shelf includes Xbox 360 or Original Xbox discs
Xbox Series X offers the stronger opportunity, but only after title-by-title verification. Search the current Xbox compatibility catalog for each game before buying the console or a second-hand disc. Unsupported discs remain unsupported, regardless of their age, publisher, or original Xbox platform.
If you own both formats
Separate the decision into two inventories. Count the PS4 discs you would actually replay, then make a second list of Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games that matter to you. The console that supports the larger number of games you value is the practical winner, even if the other platform has a longer theoretical catalog.
Digital libraries and account ownership
PS5 digital ownership
- Sign in on PS5 with the PlayStation Network account that purchased the PS4 games.
- Open the game library and locate the PS4 titles associated with that account.
- Check each game’s compatibility note before downloading.
- Look for an explicitly stated PS5 upgrade when you want the native version; do not assume every upgrade is free.
This process preserves digital ownership without requiring the original PS4 console. It does not transfer purchases between different accounts, and it does not remove the exceptions Sony identifies.

Xbox digital ownership
- Sign in to Xbox Series X with the Microsoft account that owns the game.
- Open the owned-games library and confirm that the title appears as supported.
- Install the available Xbox version.
- When Smart Delivery is enabled for that game, allow the console to provide the appropriate version for Series X instead of selecting an unrelated generation build.
Smart Delivery is most convenient when a game spans Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles, but it does not expand the backward-compatibility catalog. A game must first be supported, and the publisher must support Smart Delivery for the automatic version selection to apply.
Performance and feature continuity
PS5 can improve some PS4 games
Game Boost may improve frame-rate behavior in selected PS4 games. That can make a compatible title feel smoother without changing the underlying game into a full PS5 remake. Because support is selective, preserve expectations at the game level: one title may benefit while another simply runs as the PS4 version.
Xbox can simplify generation changes
Smart Delivery reduces the version-management problem for supported releases. Instead of keeping separate Xbox One and Series packages in mind, the console can supply the best supported build for the hardware you are using. System-link support can also retain a form of local or network continuity across generations when a particular game includes it.
Compatibility is not the same as a remake
Backward compatibility means the original game can run on newer hardware under the platform’s supported rules. It does not guarantee remastered graphics, restored downloadable content, modern servers, identical peripherals, or every feature from the original release. Those details belong to the individual game and publisher.
How to check a game before you buy a console
- Write down the exact title. Include the platform version, disc or digital format, and any special edition or bundle name.
- Check the official platform list. For Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games, confirmation in Xbox’s supported catalog is essential. For PS4 games, check Sony’s exception and warning information.
- Match the hardware. PS4 discs require a disc-drive PS5. Xbox disc compatibility requires Series X disc hardware and a title in the supported catalog.
- Separate running from upgrading. A game may run through backward compatibility without including a native PS5 or Xbox Series upgrade.
- Verify features you care about. Look for notes about online services, multiplayer, peripherals, saved data, and functions that could be lost or changed.
- Recheck close to purchase. Platform catalogs and policies can change, so use the current official pages rather than an old list copied by a retailer or forum.
Common mistakes and practical fixes
Buying a PS5 Digital Edition for a disc collection
Symptom: You own PS4 discs but choose the digital PS5 because the console itself is cheaper or smaller.

Assuming every Xbox 360 disc works
Symptom: An Xbox 360 game is inserted and nothing happens.
Fix: Confirm that the exact title is in the supported Xbox catalog. The backward-compatibility program covers selected games, not the entire Xbox 360 library.

Fix: Read Sony’s compatibility warning and the publisher’s game-specific notes. Sony explicitly warns that some titles can lose functions or show errors.
Confusing an upgrade with compatibility
Symptom: You can run the old version but cannot find a PS5 or Xbox Series version.
Fix: Treat backward compatibility and a native-generation upgrade as separate questions. Check whether the publisher offers an upgrade and what its terms are.
Using the wrong account
Symptom: A digital PS4 purchase does not appear on PS5.
Fix: Sign in with the PlayStation Network account that owns the purchase. Digital licenses do not move automatically between unrelated accounts.
Which console fits each type of player?
| Your priority | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The widest span of console generations | Xbox Series X | It combines Xbox One support with selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles. |
| A large existing PS4 digital library | PS5 | Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable, and digital purchases appear after account sign-in. |
| A collection of PS4 discs | PS5 with disc drive | The disc-drive model can use supported PS4 discs; PS5 Digital Edition cannot. |
| Older Xbox physical games | Xbox Series X, after catalog checks | Selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox discs are supported, but each title must be verified. |
| Automatic cross-generation version selection | Xbox Series X for Smart Delivery titles | Supported games can provide the best Xbox version for the console you are using. |
| Potentially smoother PS4 frame rates | PS5 for Game Boost titles | Selected PS4 games receive PS5 Game Boost improvements. |
What to verify before making the final choice
- List your must-play games, not just your total collection. A large unsupported backlog should not outweigh a few games you play every week.
- Mark every physical game. Disc ownership makes the PS5 model choice especially important.
- Identify the oldest generation that matters. If that is Xbox 360 or Original Xbox, Xbox Series X has the relevant compatibility advantage; if it is PS3 or older PlayStation discs, neither platform offers the equivalent support described here.
- Check whether a feature matters more than launch. A game that starts but loses a mode, peripheral, or online function may not satisfy your reason for keeping it.
- Revisit the official lists immediately before purchase. Compatibility catalogs and publisher policies are maintained over time.
For most buyers, the final decision is straightforward: choose Xbox Series X when breadth across Xbox generations is the deciding factor, and choose a disc-drive PS5 when your priority is retaining a substantial PS4 collection. Neither platform makes every historical game playable, so verify the titles that matter before you commit.
