PS5 vs Xbox Series X in 2026: Which Should You Buy Before the Next Generation?

There is no universal winner. Choose PS5 if you want PlayStation exclusives, DualSense features, or continuity with a PS4 library. Choose Xbox Series X if you want broad backward compatibility across Xbox generations, Smart Delivery, or a built-in UHD Blu-ray player. If you are deciding whether to buy now or wait, no next-generation launch date is confirmed in the available reporting: 2027 has been discussed as a possibility, not a promise.

Start with the games you want to play

A console’s value depends more on its games and your existing library than on a generic spec-sheet verdict. Make a short list of the games you plan to play, then check which system supports them and whether you already own them digitally or on disc.

  • Lean PS5 if the PlayStation exclusives you want, DualSense controller features, or your PS4 library are the deciding factors. Sony says PS5 supports the PS4 library; compatibility should still be checked for the specific games you care about. Sony’s PS5 page describes its games and features.
  • Lean Xbox Series X if you have older Xbox games or want Smart Delivery, which Microsoft lists among the console’s features. Microsoft says thousands of titles across four Xbox generations are compatible, but that does not mean every game from every generation works. Check the specific titles on Microsoft’s Xbox Series X page.

For disc-based Xbox backward-compatible games, Microsoft says the disc must remain in the drive to play. Digital entitlements and disc ownership are not interchangeable; check how the games you own are supported before choosing a console.

Disc drive and physical games: a meaningful difference

The PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive. Sony’s US Direct listing describes a 1 TB PS5 model with a drive, while Microsoft says Xbox Series X includes a UHD Blu-ray player. Available PS5 configurations and regional listings can change, so confirm the exact model and drive before buying. See Sony Direct’s US product listing and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X specifications.

Sony’s PS5 page currently states that from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase in digital format only, while discs for games released before that date can continue to be played on the console. That is Sony’s stated policy; check the official PS5 page again before making a purchase decision, since product policies may change.

Compare subscriptions using your own games and local prices

Sony describes PlayStation Plus as a set of membership plans with a PS5 and PS4 game catalogue that changes monthly. The catalogue and plan terms matter more than the service name: check whether the games you actually want are included, and compare the current recurring prices in your region. The available information does not establish a same-market price comparison or the exact current Xbox Game Pass catalogue, so a broad claim that one subscription is cheaper or better value would be premature. Sony’s PS5 page describes its membership offering.

Should you buy now or wait?

Reporting by TechRadar in 2025 said both companies had confirmed work on next-generation consoles and described 2027 as a possible launch year. It did not establish a confirmed launch date. A typical console-cycle interval is not a guarantee, and the available official product information does not confirm when a successor will arrive.

Use your current console’s condition and the games you want now to make the timing decision. If your existing system meets your needs and you are comfortable waiting without a known date, waiting is reasonable. If there are games you want to play now, compare the current local console prices and your preferred library rather than buying or waiting based on an assumed launch window. Prices, stock, and configurations vary by region and retailer.

A quick decision checklist

  1. List your must-play games. Confirm platform availability for each one.
  2. Check the library you already own. Verify whether your digital purchases and discs work on the console you are considering; for Xbox disc-based backward-compatible games, the disc must stay in the drive.
  3. Decide whether you need a disc drive. Account for games and movies on disc, and verify the exact PS5 configuration before ordering.
  4. Compare subscription plans locally. Check current recurring prices and whether the changing catalogue includes games you will play.
  5. Compare today’s local price with the value of playing now. Treat 2027 as a possible next-generation window reported by TechRadar in 2025, not a confirmed launch date.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
