Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Short answer: PS5 Pro can let selected, enhanced games keep a higher-fidelity image while targeting 60 frames per second (fps), and some titles offer modes up to 120fps. It does not automatically increase the frame rate of every PS5 game. The useful upgrade depends on the games you play, the Pro mode each game supports, and whether your TV or monitor can display the target refresh rate.
PS5 vs. PS5 Pro: the change is game-specific
The biggest mistake in a PS5-versus-PS5-Pro comparison is treating the Pro as a universal frame-rate switch. Sony describes PS5 Pro features as applying to selected PS5 games enhanced for Pro, with features varying by title. A game must expose a suitable Pro mode for you to see a meaningful change.

In supported games, the additional hardware can be used in several ways:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- holding 60fps while rendering a clearer or more detailed image;
- combining visual features normally associated with a quality mode and a 60fps target;
- adding ray-tracing effects without abandoning a smoother performance target; or
- offering a higher-refresh-rate option, sometimes reaching 80fps or up to 120fps.
Those outcomes are not interchangeable. One game may improve image quality at the same 60fps, another may offer a new 80fps mode, and another may leave its gameplay frame rate unchanged while improving resolution. The relevant comparison is therefore PS5 mode versus PS5 Pro mode in each game, not a single console-wide percentage gain.

What PS5 Pro advertises for high-frame-rate gaming
Sony’s current US PS5 Pro product information, accessed October 13, 2026, says compatible games can run at 60fps or up to 120fps with 4K output, ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K resolution using PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). The same page makes clear that these capabilities are available only in selected games and vary by title.
“Up to 120fps” is a ceiling for compatible software, not a promise that every game reaches 120fps. It also does not mean that a 120fps mode will appear automatically after you connect a Pro. The developer has to implement and support the mode, and your display has to be able to show it.
Frame rate and visual quality can be traded differently by each game
On the standard PS5, a game commonly offers a choice between a quality-oriented mode and a performance-oriented mode, although the exact labels and targets differ. PS5 Pro gives developers more rendering headroom, but they decide where to spend it. Extra resources might go toward resolution, image reconstruction, ray tracing, texture detail, lighting or a higher frame-rate target.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That is why “higher frame rate” and “better graphics” are not always delivered together. A Pro patch can make a 60fps mode sharper without changing its frame rate, or it can add visual effects while preserving 60fps. Only some titles add an 80fps or 120fps option.
PSSR is an image-reconstruction tool, not a frame-rate guarantee
Sony describes PSSR as AI-enhanced 4K resolution. In practical terms, a game can render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct a higher-resolution output, allowing the developer to pursue more detail without paying the full cost of native 4K rendering in every frame. The result depends on the game’s implementation, scene complexity and chosen mode.
PSSR therefore belongs in the image-quality part of the comparison. It does not, by itself, promise a particular frame rate. A title can use PSSR while targeting 60fps, as in the cited example for The Last of Us Part II Remastered, or while offering another target selected by its developer.
PS5 and PS5 Pro capabilities at a glance
| Comparison point | What PS5 Pro may add | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Frame rate | 60fps modes with more visual detail, or higher-refresh options in selected games; Sony advertises up to 120fps in compatible titles. | A universal frame-rate increase for every PS5 game. |
| Image quality | Higher base render resolution, sharper output, improved image stability and PSSR upscaling in supported games. | One fixed resolution or one identical PSSR result across all games. |
| Ray tracing and effects | Selected games can combine ray tracing or other fidelity features with smoother modes. | Ray tracing in every game, or the same effects at the same performance target. |
| Display compatibility | Some high-frame-rate modes can use a 120Hz-capable TV or monitor. | A 120Hz display being necessary for every Pro enhancement. |
| Storage | 2TB of built-in SSD storage is listed for PS5 Pro. | 2TB of user-available space; Sony notes that system software and other functions reserve part of the SSD. |
What the documented game examples show
The clearest way to understand the upgrade is to look at the specific Pro modes described by the developers. These examples are official, developer-attributed statements, not a standardized independent benchmark across the PS5 library.
Horizon Forbidden West: quality-mode visuals at 60fps
Guerrilla Studio Director and Art Director Jan-Bart van Beek says the Pro version of Horizon Forbidden West provides visual quality that matches or surpasses the regular PS5 Quality mode at 60fps. His description is important because it illustrates the combination many buyers want: the visual target associated with a quality setting without giving up the smoother 60fps target.
“PlayStation 5 Pro brings a lot of extra horsepower that has allowed us to really push the graphical fidelity, while also maintaining the stable high framerates that we all enjoy so much. For Horizon Forbidden West, that means you can now enjoy a visual quality that matches or surpasses the Quality mode on the regular PlayStation 5, but now at 60 FPS – double the framerate.”
The statement describes this particular game. It should not be read as a promise that every PS5 title will double its frame rate or reproduce its quality mode at 60fps.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart: Fidelity-like features at 60fps
Insomniac Core Technology Director Mike Fitzgerald describes Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s Performance Pro mode as combining visual features from Fidelity mode with a 60fps target. This is another example of a game-specific compromise being reduced: instead of choosing between the two existing priorities, the Pro mode is designed to bring more of both together.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The phrase “combining” matters. It does not establish that every Fidelity setting is identical to the standard PS5 mode, nor does it establish a 120fps target. It identifies a 60fps mode with a higher visual ambition.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered: 1440p rendered and upscaled to 4K
Naughty Dog Lead Programmer Vincent Marxen describes a Pro mode for The Last of Us Part II Remastered that renders at 1440p, upscales to 4K with PSSR and maintains a 60fps target. This is a concrete example of reconstruction being used to balance image quality and performance.
Because the game’s internal rendering resolution and output resolution are different, “4K” here refers to the upscaled output described by the developer, not a claim that every frame is rendered natively at 4K. The 60fps figure is the mode’s target, not a guarantee that every scene will behave identically under every condition.
Stellar Blade: an 80fps mode that needs a 120Hz display
Shift Up Technical Director and CTO Dongki Lee describes several Pro options for Stellar Blade. He says the game can be enjoyed in 4K at 50fps or more, with improved grain and detail in its PSSR upscale mode. He also identifies an HFR option that supports 80fps and requires 120Hz display support.
“With PS5 Pro, players will be able to enjoy Stellar Blade in 4K resolution at 50fps or more, with smoother gameplay, and you’ll notice an improvement in grain and detail in the game in PSSR upscale mode. Plus, the HFR (high framerate) option is supported, allowing you to enjoy a fluid gaming experience at 80 fps (120hz display support required).”
This example clearly shows why the display question matters. An 80fps mode cannot be fully presented by a display limited to 60Hz. The requirement belongs to this HFR option; it must not be generalized to every PS5 Pro game or every Pro visual improvement.
Saros: sharper 60fps, not a higher gameplay frame rate
Housemarque Technical Director Seppo Halonen says Saros already runs at 60fps on PS5. On PS5 Pro, the team increases the base render resolution, producing a clearer, higher-resolution image at 60fps.
“On PlayStation 5 Pro we also increased our base render resolution. This means on PS5 Pro, you will have an even clearer higher resolution image at 60 fps.”

The same PlayStation Blog material says key story cinematics run at 30fps. That distinction prevents a common misunderstanding: a game can have 60fps gameplay on both consoles and still look sharper on Pro, while scripted cinematic sequences retain a different frame rate.
Do you need a 120Hz TV or monitor for PS5 Pro?
Only if the particular mode you want is designed around a refresh rate above 60Hz. The cited Stellar Blade HFR mode requires 120Hz display support. A 120Hz screen can also be relevant to other games that expose high-refresh modes, but the available mode and its requirement must be checked title by title.
If your display is 60Hz, you can still benefit from Pro enhancements that target 30fps or 60fps, including sharper rendering, PSSR output and selected ray-tracing improvements. You would not be able to see the full motion benefit of an 80fps or 120fps mode on that screen.
How to decide whether your display is sufficient
- Identify the exact Pro mode you intend to use in the game’s options or current patch notes.
- Check whether that mode specifies 120Hz support or another refresh-rate requirement.
- Confirm that the TV or monitor supports the required refresh rate at the resolution and input you use.
- If the display is limited to 60Hz, prioritize Pro modes whose benefit is image quality at 60fps rather than a higher-Hz target.
Do not buy a new display simply because you own a Pro. Buy one when a game you actually play offers a mode whose visible benefit depends on it.

Is PS5 Pro better for 120Hz gaming?
It can be, but the answer is conditional. PS5 Pro is the more capable choice when your library includes documented Pro-enhanced games with 80fps or 120fps options and you already have a suitable high-refresh display. Sony’s “up to 120fps” wording confirms that the platform can support that class of mode in compatible games.
For a game that only adds resolution or visual stability while remaining at 60fps, the Pro may still look better, but it is not a higher-frame-rate upgrade. Saros provides this example: 60fps gameplay on both consoles, with a sharper, higher-resolution image on Pro.
For a game with a 60fps Pro mode that incorporates quality-mode features, the benefit is a smoother presentation at a higher visual setting, not necessarily a move to 120fps. Horizon Forbidden West and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart illustrate this category.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.PS5 vs. PS5 Pro by player priority
| Your priority | What to look for | Likely conclusion from the documented examples |
|---|---|---|
| Highest possible frame rate | A named HFR, 80fps or 120fps mode in the games you play, plus a display that supports it. | Pro is compelling only when those modes exist in your actual library. |
| Smoother 60fps with quality-mode visuals | Pro modes that explicitly combine fidelity features and a 60fps target. | Examples such as Horizon Forbidden West and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart fit this use case. |
| Sharper image at the same frame rate | Higher base render resolution, PSSR or improved image stability at 60fps. | Saros demonstrates that Pro can improve clarity without increasing gameplay fps. |
| Ray tracing with performance | A game-specific mode that lists ray tracing alongside its frame-rate target. | Possible in selected titles; there is no universal ray-tracing mode. |
| Playing mostly unenhanced or older games | Whether the title has a Pro patch or benefits from the applicable Game Boost support. | Do not assume a new 60fps or 120fps mode without checking the game. |
| Limited display refresh rate | Whether your screen can exceed 60Hz. | Pro’s 60fps image-quality benefits can remain relevant; a 120Hz-dependent mode will not be fully visible. |
How to evaluate your own game library before buying
- Make a shortlist. Write down the games you play most, rather than relying on the size of the overall PS5 catalog.
- Check each title’s current Pro support. Look for the developer’s listed Pro mode, frame-rate target, resolution or PSSR behavior, and any ray-tracing changes. Supported modes can change with patches.
- Separate the target from the guarantee. A 60fps or 80fps label is a mode target described by the developer. Do not convert “up to 120fps” into a claim that every scene in every compatible title runs at 120fps.
- Match the mode to your screen. A 120Hz requirement is decisive for a mode such as Stellar Blade’s HFR option. A 60Hz display points you toward 30fps or 60fps image-quality improvements instead.
- Decide what improvement you can see. If you care most about motion, prioritize a documented higher-fps mode. If you sit close to a large 4K screen, sharper reconstruction or improved image stability may matter more.
- Account for storage. PS5 Pro is listed with a 2TB built-in SSD, although Sony notes that system software and other functions reduce the space available for games.
- Re-check after updates. A game’s supported Pro modes and settings can change through patches, so verify the current behavior of a specific title before making the purchase decision.
When PS5 Pro is the sensible upgrade
Choose Pro when the mode you want is already documented
The strongest case is a library built around games whose Pro modes address your exact complaint. If you want Horizon Forbidden West’s quality-like presentation at 60fps, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s Fidelity-feature combination at 60fps, or Stellar Blade’s 80fps HFR option on a 120Hz display, the benefit is concrete rather than speculative.
Choose Pro when image clarity matters at 60fps
A higher frame rate is not the only reason to upgrade. The Saros example shows a case where both consoles target 60fps gameplay but Pro raises base render resolution and sharpness. If you notice shimmering, softness or unstable fine detail more than you notice the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz, this type of improvement may be the relevant one.
Keep the standard PS5 when your key games lack a meaningful Pro mode
If your favorite titles have no documented Pro enhancement, or their Pro option leaves the frame-rate and image-quality trade-off essentially unchanged for your priorities, the available statements do not support paying for a universal improvement. The Pro’s advertised capabilities are conditional on supported software.
Do not make the purchase solely for the “120fps” label
A platform-level maximum is not a library-wide result. Verify the title, mode and display together. Without all three, “120fps gaming” describes a possibility rather than the experience you will actually receive.
Common misconceptions and their corrections
- “Every PS5 game runs faster on Pro.” No. Enhancements are selected by game, and a Pro patch may improve resolution while keeping the same gameplay frame rate.
- “PS5 Pro means every game is 4K at 120fps.” No. Sony’s wording is “up to 120fps” in compatible games, and individual examples use different targets such as 60fps and 80fps.
- “A 120Hz TV is mandatory for Pro.” No. It is required for particular high-refresh modes, including the cited Stellar Blade HFR option. It is not a universal requirement for 60fps or image-quality improvements.
- “4K output always means native 4K rendering.” No. The Last of Us Part II Remastered is described as rendering at 1440p and upscaling to 4K with PSSR.
- “A 60fps Pro mode means every part of the game is 60fps.” Not necessarily. Saros is described as 60fps in gameplay while key story cinematics run at 30fps.
- “There is a single percentage uplift from PS5 to Pro.” The available official material does not establish a cross-game benchmark or universal percentage.
Bottom line for high-frame-rate buyers
PS5 Pro is best understood as a game-by-game performance and image-quality upgrade. It can preserve or improve visual fidelity at 60fps, add ray tracing to selected performance modes, sharpen 60fps output through higher base resolution and PSSR, and reach higher refresh rates in specific games. It cannot force every title to a higher frame rate.
Before buying, verify three things: the Pro mode in the games you play, the frame-rate target that mode actually offers, and whether your display can show it. If those line up—especially a documented 80fps or 120fps mode on a 120Hz screen—the Pro has a clear high-frame-rate rationale. If they do not, its value is more likely to come from sharper 60fps presentation than from faster gameplay.
