Short answer: you do not need a PS5 Pro to play Grand Theft Auto VI. PlayStation lists GTA VI for both PS5 and PS5 Pro, with a November 19, 2026 release. The standard PS5 is the known baseline: PlayStation says its extended gameplay look was captured entirely on that console. The Pro version is labeled PS5 Pro Enhanced, but Sony and Rockstar have not published its resolution, frame-rate target, ray-tracing configuration or VRR behavior.
A PS5 Pro could produce a cleaner image, stronger ray-tracing effects or steadier rendering if Rockstar uses its additional graphics headroom. Those are reasonable expectations, not confirmed GTA VI specifications. If you want the confirmed game and PS5 features at the lower hardware cost, choose the standard PS5. Choose the Pro for its premium potential across supported games and displays, not because a 60-fps GTA VI mode has been promised.

What is officially confirmed about GTA VI on PS5
Both consoles are supported
PlayStation lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. The game is not listed for PlayStation 4, so a PS4 cannot run it. The scheduled launch is November 19, 2026, according to PlayStation’s 2026 game listing.

The Pro carries an Enhanced label, not a published specification
The PlayStation game page and PlayStation Store listing identify GTA VI as PS5 Pro Enhanced. That label confirms that the game has been designated for Pro support, but it does not tell you which graphics mode will be available. In the material published so far, there is no Pro-specific internal resolution, output resolution, frame-rate cap, ray-tracing mode or variable-refresh-rate setting.

The public gameplay footage is standard-PS5 evidence
PlayStation says the extended look at GTA VI was captured entirely from in-game footage on a standard PS5. It demonstrates the presentation Rockstar is targeting on the base console; it does not demonstrate a Pro-only mode. The footage therefore gives buyers a useful floor for image quality and performance expectations, while leaving the size of any Pro upgrade unknown.

Expected graphics differences: where the Pro might help
Image quality and reconstruction
A Pro console has more graphics headroom than a base PS5, so Rockstar could spend that headroom on a cleaner image. That might mean a higher internal render resolution, a more effective reconstruction method, fewer distant shimmer artifacts or better detail retention while driving quickly through Vice City. However, none of those outcomes is confirmed for GTA VI. They are examples of how an enhanced mode could be designed, not descriptions of a published mode.
The practical difference depends on the game’s chosen strategy. A Pro mode could render more pixels while keeping the same visual effects and target frame rate. It could instead preserve the base resolution and add denser effects, longer detail distances or improved shadows. It could offer separate quality and performance modes. Until Rockstar documents the options, it is impossible to say whether the Pro will look visibly sharper in every scene or only in difficult shots such as foliage, reflections and long views across the city.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRay tracing and reflections
Ray tracing is another plausible destination for additional hardware capacity. GTA VI’s world contains surfaces and lighting situations where reflections, shadows and indirect illumination can affect image quality. A Pro build might use a higher ray-tracing setting, enable an effect that is reduced on the base PS5 or maintain an effect more consistently during demanding scenes.
That possibility should not be turned into a promise. PlayStation has not published the ray-tracing configuration for either console, and the Pro label alone does not identify which effects are enabled. A buyer should wait for Rockstar’s technical documentation or independent launch testing before treating ray-traced reflections or shadows as a meaningful reason to upgrade.
What a television or monitor can reveal
The value of a cleaner image is display-dependent. On a large 4K television viewed from a normal sofa distance, improved fine detail and reduced shimmer could be easier to notice than on a small screen. A high-refresh display may make a steadier frame delivery more useful than a modest resolution increase. Conversely, if you sit farther away or use a smaller panel, the difference between the two versions may be subtle.

- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
This is not a claim that the Pro will be wasted on any particular display. It means the same render improvement is easier to see when the screen, viewing distance and game mode expose it. Because GTA VI’s output modes are not published, no one can currently identify a minimum television specification that guarantees a visible Pro benefit.
Will GTA VI run at 60 fps on PS5 Pro?
There is no confirmed 60-fps mode
No official source reviewed for this launch lists a 60-fps target for GTA VI on PS5 Pro. The same is true of the standard PS5. Claims that the Pro version will run at 60 fps should therefore be treated as speculation, regardless of how often they are repeated online.
A 60-fps mode would require Rockstar to balance world simulation, animation, streaming, lighting, reflections and resolution within a substantially tighter frame-time budget than a 30-fps presentation. The Pro’s extra graphics capacity could make that balance easier, but it cannot guarantee that the game’s CPU workload, streaming design or chosen visual settings will fit a 60-fps target.
Steadier performance is possible, but still an inference
If the base PS5 version targets a particular frame rate and occasionally falls below it in busy scenes, a Pro build could have enough headroom to hold that target more consistently. Rockstar could also use the additional capacity for image quality instead of frame rate, leaving the cap unchanged while reducing dips. Both are credible implementation choices; neither has been announced.
Do not confuse a console’s ability to output 120 Hz with a game’s ability to render at 120 or 60 frames per second. Display refresh rate, frame-rate cap and actual frame-time consistency are separate measurements. GTA VI’s values for all three remain unpublished.

Variable refresh rate is also unknown
PlayStation has not stated whether GTA VI will support VRR on either console or whether the Pro will receive a different VRR range. A compatible television can only respond to the signals the game and system provide. Until Rockstar gives a VRR specification, buyers should not assume that a Pro purchase will eliminate judder or compensate for every performance fluctuation.

Which PS5 features are confirmed for GTA VI?
DualSense feedback
Sony and Rockstar highlight DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers for the PS5 experience. Haptics can communicate impacts, road texture, weather and other contextual events through the controller, while adaptive triggers can vary resistance for supported actions. The published material presents these as PS5-family features; it does not describe a separate Pro implementation.
Tempest 3D AudioTech
Tempest 3D AudioTech is also highlighted. Its purpose is to place supported sounds around the player, making traffic, dialogue, effects and environmental cues easier to distinguish in a compatible audio setup. The feature is associated with the PS5 platform rather than being an exclusive reason to select the Pro.
High-speed SSD loading
PlayStation points to the high-speed SSD and near-instant loading as part of GTA VI’s PS5 experience. Fast storage can reduce waits when entering the game world, changing areas or recovering from a failure. The official description does not identify a special Pro-only loading system, so storage speed should not be used as the deciding difference between the two consoles.

Does the standard PS5 version lose the main GTA VI experience?
Nothing published so far indicates that the base PS5 version omits the game’s central world, story or PS5 immersion features. The extended look was captured on that hardware, and Sony’s marketing describes GTA VI as taking advantage of PS5 features for its single-player experience. The Pro designation signals an enhanced option, not a separate game with exclusive content.
There may eventually be visual settings that are available only on Pro, but that is different from withholding the core game from standard-console owners. Until Rockstar announces mode-specific content, expect the same release and gameplay systems on both supported PS5 models, with the potential difference concentrated in rendering quality and consistency.
Is PS5 Pro worth buying just for GTA VI?
Choose the standard PS5 when certainty and value matter most
- You want to play GTA VI at launch and do not want to pay for an unconfirmed graphics advantage.
- You are satisfied with the standard-PS5 footage as the demonstrated baseline.
- Your television is modest in size, your viewing distance is long, or you are less sensitive to small image-quality changes.
- You also want the confirmed DualSense, Tempest 3D AudioTech and SSD features, none of which is presented as Pro-exclusive.
This is the safest purchase based on currently documented information. It gives you access to the game without relying on a future frame-rate or resolution promise.

Consider the Pro if you value premium rendering across your library
- You already plan to buy a Pro for enhanced versions of several supported games, making GTA VI one part of a broader use case.
- You use a large, high-quality display where extra detail or steadier rendering would be visible and valuable.
- You are comfortable buying on potential: Rockstar may use the Pro’s additional headroom for image quality, effects or consistency, but the exact benefit is unknown.
- You are willing to reassess after launch documentation or testing rather than assuming a 60-fps mode.
That is a reasonable premium-console decision, but it is not the same as proving that GTA VI alone justifies the hardware. The evidence supports a possibility of better rendering, not a measured difference or guaranteed mode.
Existing PS5 owners should wait for technical details
If you already own a standard PS5, there is no confirmed GTA VI requirement that forces an upgrade. Wait for Rockstar’s final graphics-mode notes, footage captured on both consoles or independent testing that measures resolution, frame pacing, ray tracing and VRR behavior. Those details will tell you whether the actual improvement matches your display and priorities.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What will determine the real-world difference at launch?
Graphics modes
The most useful launch information will be a list of selectable modes and their targets. Look for the internal or output resolution, the frame-rate cap, the effects that change between modes and whether image reconstruction is used. A mode name such as Quality or Performance is not enough by itself; the supporting numbers explain what you are choosing.
Frame-time measurements
Average frame rate does not tell the whole story. A game can average close to its target while producing visible spikes during driving, combat or rapid traversal. Independent testing should report frame-time graphs or at least sustained behavior in demanding scenes. That evidence will show whether the Pro merely raises an average or genuinely improves consistency.
Ray-tracing trade-offs
Enhanced reflections or shadows can improve realism while consuming performance headroom. Compare the same scene on both consoles and note whether the Pro adds an effect, increases its resolution or simply keeps an existing effect closer to its intended quality. A higher setting is valuable only if you prefer that visual change to a faster or steadier mode.
Display and VRR support
Check whether each mode supports VRR, the supported refresh range and any limitations on resolution or effects. This information matters especially for owners of high-refresh televisions. Without it, recommendations based solely on the presence of a 120-Hz panel are incomplete.

GTA VI editions and the cost of the game
The US PlayStation Store listing shows a $79.99 Standard Edition and a $99.99 Ultimate Edition. Those are the listed game prices, not the price of either console, and they may vary by region or change before release. A qualifying digital pre-order includes one month of GTA+, subject to the redemption and automatic-renewal terms shown in the store listing.
| Item | US amount or offer | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | $79.99 | US PlayStation Store list price shown in 2026. |
| Ultimate Edition | $99.99 | US PlayStation Store list price shown in 2026. |
| GTA+ pre-order benefit | One month | Attached to qualifying digital purchases; redemption and auto-renewal terms apply. |
| PS5 hardware price difference | Not stated in the available GTA VI listing | Use the current regional console prices when calculating an upgrade. |
The edition you buy does not establish a console graphics mode. A Standard Edition purchase on PS5 Pro remains a Pro-enhanced game if the platform listing says so, while an Ultimate Edition purchase does not turn a base PS5 into a Pro or add an unannounced frame-rate option.
How to make a sensible buying decision before release
- Start with the confirmed requirement. Plan for a PS5 or PS5 Pro; a PS4 is not a supported platform.
- Decide whether you are buying for GTA VI alone. If this is a single-game purchase, treat every Pro improvement as unconfirmed. If you want enhanced rendering across multiple supported games, include that wider library in your calculation.
- Evaluate your display. Consider screen size, viewing distance, refresh rate and whether you can see differences in fine detail. A premium console is more useful when your display can expose its output.
- Set a performance priority. Decide whether you would prefer sharper imagery, richer effects or steadier motion if Rockstar offers a choice. You cannot make that choice accurately until the modes are documented.
- Check final technical notes before upgrading. Look for Rockstar or PlayStation information covering resolution, frame-rate caps, ray tracing and VRR. Do not treat retailer wording or an unexplained Enhanced badge as a substitute for those details.
- Compare the complete cost. Include the console, the game edition and any display or audio equipment you would buy. The game’s listed price is the same decision category for both consoles; the uncertain variable is the hardware premium and the value you place on possible rendering gains.
Common claims that should be treated cautiously
GTA VI is guaranteed to be 60 fps on Pro
There is no published target supporting that statement. The Pro could improve consistency or image quality instead, and the final mode may involve trade-offs.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →PS5 Pro Enhanced means native 4K
The label does not define internal resolution, reconstruction method or output mode. Native 4K has not been stated for GTA VI on either console.
The Pro is required for the best or complete version
PlayStation lists both consoles, and the standard PS5 footage demonstrates the base presentation. The Pro may be visually preferable to some buyers, but a requirement has not been announced.
DualSense and 3D audio are Pro exclusives
Those features are highlighted for PS5 generally. The available material does not identify them as Pro-only capabilities.
Bottom-line buying advice
For most GTA VI players, the standard PS5 is the rational choice today: it is an official platform, it is the hardware used for the published extended look and it provides the confirmed PS5 feature set. The PS5 Pro is the enthusiast option. Its Enhanced designation and additional graphics capacity make cleaner imagery or steadier rendering plausible, particularly on a large high-refresh display, but no official document currently promises a specific resolution, ray-tracing setting, VRR mode or 60-fps experience.
