A missing game, sluggish home screen, or blank display usually has a specific, reversible cause. Start with account, cable, restart, and update checks; then use the least disruptive Safe Mode option that matches the symptom. Leave a console reset until you have backed up your data and exhausted the non-erasing steps.
Use this order before changing anything
Work from checks that preserve your games and saves toward options that alter console data. The table below is a quick triage guide; the detailed procedures follow.

| Symptom | First checks | Next official option | Data risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purchased game or add-on is missing, or a padlock appears | Correct purchasing account, transaction history, hidden games, and Console Sharing and Offline Play | Restore Licenses | Does not affect data |
| Menus are slow or a deleted game icon remains | Restart, install available system software updates, and check network conditions | Clear System Software Cache or Rebuild Database in Safe Mode | These are separate maintenance choices; follow the current prompts |
| Blank screen or wrong picture | Reseat HDMI, select the correct display input, and bypass a receiver or switch | Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode in Safe Mode | Changes display settings, not your game library |
| Nothing above resolves the fault | Record error codes and the steps already attempted | PlayStation Repairs or PlayStation Support | Consider a reset only after a backup |
PlayStation changes menu wording as system software evolves. Confirm that the PS5 is updated when you can, and use the labels currently shown on your console rather than relying on an older screenshot.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen a purchased game, add-on, or padlocked title is missing
A title disappearing from the library does not prove that it was deleted or that the PS5 has failed. Digital ownership is tied to the account that completed the purchase, and licenses can temporarily fail to validate. Check the following in order.
#1 Best Overall
- Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable designed for PS5
- 8K & 4K compatible HDMI 2.1 specifications
- 6.5-foot braided cable with metal housing
- Nylon-Braided cable for high durability and longevity
- Officially Licensed by Sony
1. Confirm the owning account
Open the user profile currently signed in and compare it with the account that bought the game. If several people use the PS5, switch to each relevant profile and check the Game Library. A game bought by a different account will not necessarily appear as owned on the current profile unless that account has enabled the appropriate sharing setting.
2. Verify the transaction
Check the purchasing account’s transaction history. A canceled, failed, or incomplete transaction cannot grant a usable license, even if a download was started. Keep the transaction date, item name, and any receipt or error code; support can use those details to distinguish an ownership problem from a console problem.
3. Look in hidden games
In Game Library, inspect the hidden-games area using the current on-screen labels. Hiding a title removes it from the normal view but does not remove the purchase. Unhide it and check whether the padlock or download control changes.

4. Check Console Sharing and Offline Play
If another account owns the title, sign in to that owning account and review its Console Sharing and Offline Play setting. The setting determines whether other users on that PS5 can use the owner’s purchased games while offline. If the owner is sharing to a different PS5, the entitlement may not be available locally until the sharing arrangement is corrected. Change one account setting at a time, then return to the affected profile and check the library.
5. Restore licenses
Restoring licenses is PlayStation’s first-line check for padlocked games and content that cannot be located:
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Select Restore Licenses, then confirm.
PlayStation says this process does not affect your data. It refreshes the console’s record of what the account is entitled to use; it does not delete installed games or saves. After it finishes, restart the PS5 and check the affected title again.

6. Check for an outage before escalating
If several purchased items fail at once, or a title works for other users but not for you, check PlayStation service status. An account or store service interruption can look like a local license failure. When services are operating and the account, transaction, hidden-library, sharing, and license checks all pass, contact PlayStation Support with the item name, owning account, transaction details, padlock or error text, and the exact steps you tried.

Fixing slow menus, erratic interface behavior, or a stale game icon
Slow navigation and a Home icon that remains after deletion have different possible causes. Begin with routine maintenance; do not treat Safe Mode options as guaranteed speed upgrades.
Restart and update first
Use the normal power menu to restart the PS5 completely. A restart clears temporary state without removing installed content. Then install any available system software update using the current Settings labels. Updates can correct system-feature defects and compatibility problems, so record the installed system-software version if you later need support.
For game downloads, patches, or online library failures, also check network conditions. A slow or interrupted connection can make the interface appear stuck even when the console itself is responsive. Test another network activity, wait for a service interruption to clear, and retry the affected operation before entering Safe Mode.
Enter Safe Mode correctly
Safe Mode provides maintenance choices that are not available during a normal boot.
- Turn the PS5 off by holding the power button for about three seconds, until it shuts down.
- After it is off, hold the power button again.
- Release the button after the second beep, roughly seven seconds after the first beep.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable and press the PS button.
If the second-beep timing is missed, turn the console off and try again. Use the current Safe Mode menu labels; PlayStation may adjust their wording in a later system release.

Clear System Software Cache
PlayStation identifies Clear System Software Cache as an applicable Safe Mode choice for system-feature issues or performance drops. Select it when menus behave erratically, settings fail to load, or the interface has slowed after an update or prolonged use. It is a maintenance action, not a promise of a measurable speed increase. If the same symptoms return, move to the next diagnostic step rather than repeatedly clearing the cache.
Rebuild Database
Rebuild Database scans the console drive and creates a new database of system content. PlayStation lists it for system-feature issues and for a game icon that remains after deletion. Choose it when the library or Home screen shows stale entries, sorting is inconsistent, or the console takes an unusually long time to find installed content.
The scan can take considerably longer than a normal restart, especially on a heavily used drive. Do not interrupt power while it is running. Rebuild Database is not a general-purpose cure for every slow-menu complaint; if the interface remains slow after the scan and an update, continue to escalation rather than repeating the procedure indefinitely.
Repair Console Storage, if shown
Some Safe Mode versions include Repair Console Storage. PlayStation characterizes this choice as non-erasing. Read the on-screen warning and confirmation text on your particular system before proceeding, and allow the operation to finish without disconnecting power. It is distinct from both Clear System Software Cache and Rebuild Database, so select it only when the symptom and the current Safe Mode description fit.
When to stop troubleshooting
Persistent freezes, repeated Safe Mode returns, failed updates, or storage-related errors warrant PlayStation Repairs. Avoid opening the console or attempting unverified internal repairs: those steps can create new damage and make an official diagnosis harder. Supply the error code, system-software version, whether the problem affects every user, and whether it occurs in Safe Mode as well as normal operation.
Fixing a blank screen or incorrect display output
A blank television does not automatically mean the PS5 has failed. HDMI negotiation, an incorrect input, a receiver or switch, and an incompatible display mode can all produce a black picture. Isolate the signal path before changing console settings.

- Uninterrupted speed and maximum visual performance
- Transmits 4K resolution at 120 Hz and 8k resolution at 60 Hz as specified in HDMI 2.1
- Supports up to 48 Gbps bandwidth
Check the physical connection and input
- Turn on the display and select the HDMI input that the PS5 actually uses.
- Reseat the HDMI plug at both the console and the display. Push it in firmly without forcing the connector.
- If the PS5 passes through an audio/video receiver, soundbar, or HDMI switch, connect it directly to the display temporarily. This removes intermediary equipment from the test.
- Power the display and PS5 off, reconnect the simplest direct path, and test again.
If the picture returns through a direct connection, add the receiver or switch back one device at a time. That identifies which part of the chain is rejecting the signal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf Safe Mode itself is not visible
When no Safe Mode picture appears, PlayStation says a cable may not be properly connected. Reseat the HDMI connection and, if necessary, test a different USB, HDMI, or power cable, changing one item at a time. A replacement HDMI cable is reasonable only after the connection and input checks suggest the current cable may be faulty; PlayStation does not specify a brand, model, or performance tier.
Use a known-working display input and, when practical, another display. If the console still produces no Safe Mode image after those controlled tests, stop swapping accessories and arrange official service.
Use Change Resolution in Safe Mode
From Safe Mode, choose Change Resolution when the display may not support the currently selected output. The PS5 restarts with a compatible resolution so you can regain a picture and then select a normal setting from the regular interface. Change one setting at a time and test the display before reconnecting any receiver or switch.
Use Change HDCP Mode when copy-protection negotiation is the problem
Change HDCP Mode is another Safe Mode display diagnostic. It can help when the screen is blank even though the HDMI path is connected and the display input is correct. Apply the option, test the picture, and return to the normal display arrangement once you have identified a compatible mode. Do not transfer PS4-specific HDCP 2.2 instructions to a PS5; use only the options and explanations shown for the PS5 in the current Safe Mode screen.
Escalate persistent display failures
If a direct HDMI connection, alternate cable or display path, and the Safe Mode display options do not restore an image, use PlayStation Repairs. Provide the display model, whether the PS5’s power indicator behaves normally, whether Safe Mode produced any picture, and each cable or connection tested.

Data impact: know which option you are choosing
These actions are not interchangeable. Read the consequence before confirming an operation.
| Action | What it is for | Effect on user and game data |
|---|---|---|
| Restore Licenses | Refreshes ownership records for padlocked or missing purchases | PlayStation says it does not affect data |
| Clear System Software Cache | Safe Mode maintenance for system-feature issues or performance drops | Follow the current Safe Mode prompt; it is separate from a console reset |
| Rebuild Database | Re-scans the drive and recreates the system-content database; useful for stale icons and some system-feature issues | Follow the current prompt and do not interrupt power |
| Repair Console Storage | Safe Mode storage maintenance when offered | PlayStation characterizes it as non-erasing; read the current warning carefully |
| Restore Default Settings | Returns settings to defaults for configuration problems | Does not delete user or game data |
| Reset PS5 | Last-resort software reset | Deletes user and game data stored on the console |
Restore Default Settings is not the same as Reset PS5
Use the wording on the confirmation screen carefully. Restoring default settings returns configuration values to their defaults while leaving user and game data intact. Resetting the PS5 is destructive: it removes data stored on the console. A reset should be considered only after non-erasing troubleshooting and official support guidance have been exhausted.
Back up before any destructive reset
If support determines that a reset is necessary, back up anything you need first, verify that the backup completed, and make sure you know the sign-in details for every account that will be used afterward. Explain the data consequence to every other user of the console before confirming. Do not assume that a reset can be undone by signing in again; locally stored data must be restored from an available backup or redownloaded.
A practical decision path
Choose the missing-content path when
- The title has a padlock, the download button is missing, or an add-on cannot be found.
- Other games work normally and the display is otherwise usable.
- You can sign in to the purchasing account and inspect its transaction history.
Follow the account, transaction, hidden-library, sharing, and license sequence before considering hardware service.
Choose the slow-interface path when
- Menus lag, settings take an unusually long time to open, or a deleted icon remains.
- The display works and the problem affects the system interface rather than one online service alone.
- A restart and available update have not changed the behavior.
Use Safe Mode maintenance choices one at a time and observe the result after each completed operation.
Choose the display path when
- The display reports no signal or remains black while the PS5 appears powered on.
- The wrong resolution, HDMI input, receiver, or switch may be involved.
- Normal menus cannot be seen, preventing a conventional settings change.
Simplify the HDMI path first, then use Safe Mode’s Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode.
What to document before contacting PlayStation
Good notes shorten the support exchange and prevent repeating safe checks. Record:
Recommended Free Tools
- The exact error message or code, including capitalization and punctuation.
- The affected game, add-on, account, and transaction date, if the issue concerns ownership.
- Whether the item is hidden, padlocked, installed, or visible on another user profile.
- The PS5 system-software version and whether the console is connected directly to the display.
- For a blank screen, the display input, receiver or switch arrangement, cables tested, and whether Safe Mode produced an image.
- For slow menus, when the problem began and whether restart, update, Clear System Software Cache, Rebuild Database, or Repair Console Storage changed it.
Use PlayStation Support or PlayStation Repairs for persistent failures, and describe the sequence in the order it happened. That gives the technician a reproducible symptom instead of a general report that the PS5 is broken.
