You can delete GTA V’s game installation from your PS5 without deleting its saved data. Use Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps for the installation, and leave the separate saved-data menu untouched. Deleted purchased games can be downloaded again from your game library, but a deleted local save is a different matter.
Use the game-storage menu, not the saved-data menu
PS5 separates installed game files from saved progress. GTA V’s installation, patches and add-ons are managed under Games and Apps. Story Mode and other local save files are managed under Saved Data and Game/App Settings. Selecting GTA V in the first area and choosing Delete removes the installation while leaving the separately managed save data in place.

PlayStation Support describes the redownload result this way: “Don’t worry, you won’t lose access to any deleted games or applications — you can re-download your purchases from your game library whenever you like.” That reassurance applies to the game or application license and installation, not to a save file that you deliberately delete.

What each PS5 storage location is for
Knowing which type of data you are viewing prevents the most common mistake: deleting a save while trying to remove a large game.

The console has no cloud storage for game installations. When PlayStation documentation refers to cloud storage in this context, it means saved data. A USB extended-storage drive is therefore not a substitute for a PS5 save backup.
Safely delete GTA V’s installation
Follow these steps when your goal is to reclaim internal space while keeping GTA V progress on the console.
- Check what is consuming space. Open Settings > Storage. Review Console Storage and identify whether GTA V, another game, add-ons or media is the largest item.
- Open the installation list. Choose Console Storage > Games and Apps. This is the menu for installed game and application data, not saved data.
- Select GTA V or another unneeded title. Highlight the game. If the interface offers Customize, inspect the listed components first. PlayStation allows portions such as unused add-ons to be managed separately, which can recover space without removing every installed component.
- Choose Delete and confirm. Confirm the removal of the selected installation or components. The operation removes game files from storage; it does not select the save-data area.
- Leave saved data alone. Do not navigate to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5/PS4) > Upload or Delete from Console Storage unless you intentionally need to manage a save.
- Reinstall later from your library. When you want to play again, open your game library and download the purchased game. Reinstalling the application is separate from restoring or deleting saved data.
If the storage screen shows GTA V twice, treat the entries as separate installed versions or components and read the labels before deleting. The safe principle remains the same: remove entries from Games and Apps, never from the saved-data list.

Deleting the installation is normally enough to free space, so there is no reason to delete GTA V saves as part of that process. If you are cleaning old saves as well, verify a backup first.

- PS5 saves: PlayStation Plus cloud storage is the supported cloud route. PS5 saves cannot be copied from the console to a USB drive.
- PS4 saves: They can use PlayStation Plus cloud storage or be copied to a USB drive.
- Cloud scope: Cloud storage here is for saved data. It does not preserve a deleted game installation or let you launch a game without installing it.
Open the saved-data menu only after confirming which console generation the save belongs to: Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5/PS4). If you choose Upload or Delete from Console Storage, check the title and generation carefully before confirming any deletion.
Move GTA V to USB extended storage instead of deleting it
A compatible USB extended-storage drive can move installed game files off the PS5’s internal drive. This is useful when you want to keep the installation available without consuming console storage, but it has an important playability limit.
What USB extended storage can do
- PS5 and PS4 game installations can be stored there.
- PS4 games can be played directly from the USB extended-storage drive.
- PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage. Before launching a PS5 game, copy it back to console storage or compatible M.2 SSD storage.
How to disconnect it safely
Do not unplug an attached drive while the PS5 is actively using it. Use Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5, then disconnect the drive after the console confirms it can be removed.
Formatting a drive as extended storage erases its existing contents. Move or copy anything important elsewhere before formatting. The drive stores game installations; it is not a backup location for PS5 saved data.

Add an M.2 SSD when you need permanent game capacity
An M.2 SSD provides another place for game installations and, unlike USB extended storage, compatible PS5 games can run from it. The drive must meet PlayStation’s current hardware, capacity, interface, cooling and size requirements. Check the current PlayStation requirements before buying or installing one; compatibility varies by drive specification.
An M.2 SSD expands game capacity, not the separate save-management rules. Keep using the saved-data menu and an eligible cloud or PS4 USB method when you need save protection.

Freeing PS5 storage and migrating GTA V progress are different operations. Removing an installation does not itself migrate a save, and migration is not an ongoing backup system.

Story Mode migration
Rockstar’s Story Mode migration guidance describes a one-save process per console. A save can be updated on Rockstar’s service until a download is initiated, and the uploaded save remains available for download for 90 days, according to the May 1, 2024 guidance update. After the save is downloaded to PS5, further uploads from that account are not allowed under that migration flow.

After migration, PS4 and PS5 Story Mode progress is saved separately and does not synchronize continuously. Progress made on PS4 after migration does not carry over to PS5. Confirm that the intended save has migrated and is playable before removing old-console data or relying on the migrated copy.
GTA Online migration
GTA Online profile migration is separate from local PS5 storage management and should not be described as a Story Mode backup. Rockstar says cross-generation GTA Online progress does not sync after migration, and the migrated profile remains on the prior PS4 or Xbox One generation as well. Treat Online migration as a profile transition with its own rules, not as protection for local Story Mode saves.

Common mistakes and how to recover
Deleting from the wrong menu
If you chose Delete under Saved Data (PS5/PS4), you removed a save rather than the installation. Stop making changes and check PlayStation Plus cloud storage if the account is a member. For a PS4 save, check the USB backup if one was created. PS5 saves cannot be restored from a USB copy because the console does not support copying them from console storage to USB.

Downloading GTA V again restores the application and its game files. It does not guarantee recovery of a save that was deleted locally. Save recovery depends on an available cloud copy, a PS4 USB copy where applicable, or a still-present local save.
Unplugging a USB drive without ejecting it
Reconnect the drive, allow the PS5 to recognize it, and use Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5 before disconnecting it. Avoid formatting unless you have moved any needed contents, because formatting erases the drive.
Expecting PS4 and PS5 Story Mode progress to merge
Migration creates separate generation-specific Story Mode progress. A later PS4 session does not continuously update the PS5 version. Verify the migrated save before deleting or changing the older copy.
