PS5 storage explained: how much space games need and how to expand it

There is no universal “PS5 game size.” Install requirements change by title, edition, installed add-ons, language packs and updates. Check the current PlayStation Store listing and the PS5 download or storage screen for the game you actually want to install.

For more capacity, choose an internal M.2 NVMe SSD if you want to launch PS5 games from the added space. A SuperSpeed USB drive is useful for archiving PS5 games and playing compatible PS4 games, but a PS5 game stored on USB must be copied back to console storage or an installed M.2 SSD before it can run.

How much storage does a PS5 have?

The answer depends on your PS5 model and on how much space the system software reserves. The capacity printed on a console or drive is not the same as the free space available for games: the operating system, formatting and system data consume part of it. Rather than relying on a headline capacity, check the console itself.

Check your usable space

  1. Open Settings on the PS5 home screen.
  2. Select Storage.
  3. Open Console Storage to see free space and the categories using it, such as games and apps, saved data and screenshots or video clips.

The free-space figure can change after an update, a game patch, an add-on installation or the creation of captured media. Leave additional headroom when planning an installation; the amount shown in a store listing is not a permanent prediction of the space the finished installation will occupy.

How much space does a PS5 game need?

Game sizes are title-specific. A single figure cannot represent PS5 software as a whole, and the official PlayStation storage guidance does not publish a representative current average or range. Treat any “typical PS5 game size” number found in an old article as a claim about the particular titles and versions that article measured, not as a console-wide rule.

What changes an installation size?

  • Game and edition: Standard, deluxe and bundled editions can contain different assets.
  • Installed content: A campaign, multiplayer component, language package or optional texture pack may be selectable rather than mandatory.
  • Updates: Patches can add, replace or reorganize files. The size displayed before an update is not necessarily the size after it.
  • Add-ons: Expansions and downloadable content increase the space used even when the base game is unchanged.
  • Platform version: A PS5 build and a PS4 build of the same franchise can have different requirements.
  • Installation process: A download, disc installation and later update can show different temporary and final space requirements.

Find the current requirement for one game

  1. Open the game’s current listing in the PlayStation Store and note the displayed download or required-space information for your region and edition.
  2. On the console, start the download and review the size shown on the download screen before committing to the installation.
  3. After installation, return to Settings > Storage and inspect the game entry. This reflects the files currently installed on your console, including updates and selected content.

Recheck before a large download if the game has received a major update or if you are installing an edition with additional content. Store listings and console screens can change as publishers replace files or add language and accessibility options.

Ways to expand PS5 storage

You have three practical choices: install an internal M.2 SSD, attach a SuperSpeed USB drive, or delete and later reinstall games. The right option is determined less by the advertised capacity than by whether you need to launch PS5 games immediately from the added space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option What it can do Main constraint Best fit
Internal M.2 NVMe SSD Store, download, manage and launch PS5 and PS4 games Must satisfy the current interface, capacity, speed, dimensions and cooling requirements Players who want more games ready to launch without moving them
External SuperSpeed USB storage Store compatible PS5 and PS4 games; launch compatible PS4 games directly PS5 games on the drive must be copied to console or M.2 storage before play Players building an archive, rotating a large library or playing PS4 titles
Delete and reinstall Frees space without buying hardware; deleted games can be downloaded again from the game library Reinstallation requires a download or, for disc software, another disc installation and subsequent updates Players with a small active rotation and reliable time or bandwidth for reinstalls

Using an M.2 SSD for direct-play expansion

An M.2 SSD installed in the PS5’s expansion bay is the direct-play route for PS5 games. Once formatted by the console, it can hold PS5 and PS4 games and can be selected as a storage location for downloads and installations.

Current compatibility checklist

PlayStation’s current M.2 guidance specifies the following requirements:

  • Type and interface: PCI-Express Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with a Key M connector.
  • Capacity: 250 GB to 8 TB.
  • Supported physical sizes: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110.
  • Recommended sequential-read performance: 5,500 MB/s or faster.
  • Maximum width including the heat-dissipation mechanism: 25 mm.
  • Maximum lengths including the heat-dissipation mechanism: 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm, matching the supported 2230 through 22110 formats.
  • Maximum total thickness including cooling: 11.25 mm, with up to 8.0 mm above the SSD board and 2.45 mm below it.
  • Cooling: Effective heat dissipation is required. PlayStation gives a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet as examples.

Those capacity limits are hardware requirements, not evidence of how large PS5 games are. A drive at the upper end of the range does not imply that games have a standard size or that every listed capacity will be economical for your library.

Why the heatsink and dimensions matter

An SSD can meet the interface and speed recommendation yet fail to fit once a heatsink is attached. Measure the complete assembly, not only the bare drive: width, length and the height above and below the board must stay within the limits. PlayStation states: “The use of an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink and a heat transfer sheet.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the SSD does not include adequate cooling, use a compatible low-profile heatsink whose total dimensions remain within the console’s limits. Do not stack cooling parts or assume a desktop-sized heatsink will clear the expansion cover. When a drive’s specification is unclear, PlayStation advises checking with the drive manufacturer.

Prepare before installing

  • Update the PS5 system software before opening the console. Compatibility guidance can change with system software.
  • Confirm whether your console is a model with an accessible M.2 expansion bay and follow the support instructions for that hardware revision.
  • Verify the SSD’s complete dimensions with its heatsink, not just the 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 label.
  • Back up important saved data and captures before hardware work. An SSD installation should not be treated as a substitute for a backup.
  • Work with the console powered off, unplugged and cool, and avoid touching connector contacts.

Installation and first format

  1. Install the latest PS5 system software and shut the console down completely; do not work on it in Rest Mode.
  2. Remove the outer cover and expansion-slot cover according to the PlayStation guide for your PS5 model.
  3. Set the supplied spacer to the hole matching the SSD length, insert the M.2 drive at the correct angle, and secure it with the retaining screw. Fit the heatsink and heat-transfer material as specified by the drive or cooling manufacturer.
  4. Replace the expansion-slot cover and console cover before reconnecting power.
  5. Start the PS5. The console should detect an unformatted drive and offer to format it. Formatting erases the SSD, so confirm that it contains no needed data.
  6. After formatting, open Settings > Storage and verify the M.2 storage entry and its available capacity.

Do not force a drive into the slot or operate the console with an incorrectly fitted cooling assembly. If the PS5 does not detect the SSD, shut down and recheck the connector seating, retaining screw, heatsink clearance and the drive’s interface before trying another installation.

What an M.2 SSD can and cannot guarantee

Meeting the published checklist makes a drive eligible for the console’s requirements; it is not a guarantee that every third-party product will work. PlayStation specifically cautions buyers to check the drive and cooling dimensions and to contact the drive vendor when uncertain. The 5,500 MB/s figure is a recommended sequential-read speed, not a promise that every game will load at a particular time.

Using a USB drive as extended storage

A compatible SuperSpeed USB drive is the simpler option when you want a library or archive. PlayStation’s external-storage guidance supports capacities from 250 GB to 8 TB.

What USB storage does with PS5 games

You can move a PS5 game from console storage to the USB drive to free space. You cannot launch that PS5 game directly from USB. When you want to play it, copy it back to the PS5’s console storage or to an installed M.2 SSD, then start it from there. The transfer is normally faster than downloading the entire game again, but it still takes time and requires enough free space at the destination.

What USB storage does with PS4 games

Compatible PS4 games can run directly from the USB drive. This makes external storage useful for a mixed library: keep PS4 titles playable in place, while treating PS5 titles as archived installations that are moved back when needed.

Set up a USB drive

  1. Use a SuperSpeed USB drive within the supported 250 GB to 8 TB range. Connect it directly to the PS5 rather than through a USB hub.
  2. Open Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage and choose the format option shown by the console. Formatting deletes existing data on the drive.
  3. After formatting, use the storage settings to move compatible games between console storage and USB extended storage.
  4. Before disconnecting, use the console’s safe-removal command in the USB Extended Storage menu. Unplugging during a transfer can corrupt data.

If a game is listed as a PS5 version, its presence on USB does not change the play requirement: it must be copied to console or M.2 storage before launch. A PS4 version may be playable directly from USB, so check the version installed rather than relying on the game’s name alone.

Which expansion should you choose?

Choose an M.2 SSD when direct PS5 play matters

  • You want to download and launch PS5 games without moving them first.
  • You regularly rotate several large installations and want them ready on the console.
  • You are willing to verify PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe compatibility, read-speed guidance, dimensions and heatsink clearance.

Choose USB extended storage when archiving is acceptable

  • You want to keep PS5 games available without downloading them again, even though a copy-back step is required.
  • You play many PS4 games and want them to run directly from the external drive.
  • You prefer a drive that can be disconnected and stored separately, while accepting the need for safe removal and transfer time.

Choose delete-and-reinstall when your rotation is small

  • You normally play only a few games at once.
  • Your internet connection, data allowance and download time make reinstalls acceptable.
  • You do not want to purchase, fit or troubleshoot additional hardware.

For a paid drive, compare direct-play convenience, usable capacity after formatting, total cost, physical fit and how often you are prepared to move games. Retail prices and promotions change, so check current listings at the time of purchase rather than using an old price as a benchmark.

Managing space without losing your games

Move before deleting

If you own USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD, move a PS5 game you may return to instead of deleting it. The move preserves the installed files, but you still need to copy the game to console or M.2 storage before playing if it is on USB.

Delete safely

Use the game or app management controls under Settings > Storage to remove an installation. Deleting the game does not remove your purchase entitlement; PlayStation says deleted games can be downloaded again from your library. Downloadable content and updates may need to be installed again, and disc-based games require the disc for reinstalling or playing.

Control optional content

When a game offers separate language packs, campaigns or other components, install only what you intend to use. Revisit the game’s manage-content screen after updates because an update can add or replace files and change the resulting footprint.

Keep captures under control

Screenshots and video clips are separate storage users in the PS5 Storage screen. Delete or transfer captures you no longer need before troubleshooting a game-installation failure; a full media category can consume space that would otherwise hold an update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting common storage problems

The PS5 says there is not enough space

  1. Check Settings > Storage to identify the largest category rather than deleting a random game.
  2. Review the game’s current required space on the download screen; an update can need temporary working room in addition to the final installation.
  3. Delete captures or move a game to USB extended storage, if available.
  4. If using an M.2 SSD, confirm that it was formatted and appears under the M.2 storage section. If using USB, remember that a PS5 game must be copied to console or M.2 storage before installation or play.

An M.2 SSD is not detected

  • Confirm the drive is an NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 Key M model, not a SATA M.2 drive or another incompatible interface.
  • Check that its capacity is between 250 GB and 8 TB and that its complete length, width and thickness with heatsink stay within PlayStation’s limits.
  • Power down, unplug and reseat the drive; verify the retaining screw and spacer position.
  • Install the latest system software and try again. If the drive still fails, ask the drive manufacturer to confirm compatibility rather than forcing the fit.

The console runs hot or the expansion cover will not close

Turn the console off and inspect the cooling assembly. Excessive height, a misplaced heat-transfer sheet or an overlapping heatsink can prevent the cover from seating and interfere with heat dissipation. Replace the assembly with one that remains within the 11.25 mm total-thickness limit and the 8.0 mm-above/2.45 mm-below board limits.

A PS5 game on USB will not start

This is expected behavior, not necessarily a failed drive. Copy the game to console storage or the installed M.2 SSD, wait for the transfer to finish, and launch the copy in that location. Only compatible PS4 games are intended to run directly from USB extended storage.

A USB drive is unavailable or disconnects

Confirm that it is a SuperSpeed USB drive within the 250 GB to 8 TB range, formatted by the PS5 as extended storage, and connected directly. Do not unplug it while the console is reading or moving data; use the safe-removal command first.

Questions to ask before buying storage

  • Do I need to launch PS5 games directly, or is copying them back acceptable?
  • How much usable space does my current library require after updates and optional content?
  • Does the M.2 drive meet PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, Key M and 5,500 MB/s-or-faster recommended-read requirements?
  • Do the SSD and heatsink fit within the exact width, length and thickness limits together?
  • Would a USB drive solve my problem by keeping PS4 games playable and PS5 games archived?
  • Would deleting and reinstalling be cheaper and simpler for the way I actually play?

The practical answer

Measure your own library from the current store listing and PS5 Storage screen; there is no defensible universal PS5 game-size range. If you want PS5 games ready to launch, install a correctly specified, cooled M.2 NVMe SSD. If you mainly need an archive or play compatible PS4 games, use SuperSpeed USB extended storage and plan for the required copy-back step for PS5 titles. Keep system software current, verify the complete hardware dimensions and treat the 250 GB-to-8 TB figures as storage-device limits, not game-size statistics.
