For storage you can play PS5 games from, choose an M.2 NVMe SSD that uses PCIe Gen4 x4 (Key M), falls within the supported capacity and length for your console model, and fits the slot’s width and thickness limits with its heatsink installed. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide for CFI-71XX lists capacities from 250 GB to 8 TB and warns that it cannot guarantee every third-party drive that meets the listed specifications. Check the guide for your PS5 model and region before buying.
What M.2 SSD is compatible with PS5?
The expansion slot requires an M.2 NVMe SSD with a PCIe Gen4 x4 interface and Key M connector. M.2 SATA drives are not supported. The CFI-71XX safety guide specifies these capacity and length limits:

| Specification | CFI-71XX guide |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 250 GB to 8 TB |
| Supported lengths | 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm (2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110) |
| Maximum installed width | 25 mm |
| Maximum installed thickness | 11.25 mm total: up to 8.0 mm above the board and 2.45 mm below |
These dimensions apply to the complete installed drive, including its heatsink or other heat-dissipation parts, not just the bare SSD. Consult the Sony installation guide for the exact console model and region you own. Sony cautions that meeting the listed specifications does not guarantee compatibility with every third-party drive.
Do you need a heatsink for a PS5 SSD?
The drive needs suitable heat-dissipation hardware. Sony says to add a heat conductor, such as a heatsink or heat-transfer sheet, if the SSD does not have one. Any included or separately fitted hardware must remain within the slot’s maximum installed dimensions. Poorly fitted or detached thermal parts can contribute to overheating and operation failure. See Sony’s instructions for installing an M.2 SSD before choosing a drive or heatsink.

- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
An SSD with an integrated heatsink can simplify the fit check, but confirm its full width and thickness against the guide. A separate heatsink is an option only if the finished assembly fits the same limits.
M.2 SSD or external USB drive: which should you choose?
Choose an internal M.2 drive if you want to launch PS5 games from added storage. PlayStation says installed M.2 storage can download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games. External USB storage behaves differently:

- Interface: Confirm M.2 NVMe, PCIe Gen4 x4 and Key M. Do not choose M.2 SATA.
- Capacity and length: Check the drive’s exact capacity and physical length against the guide for your console.
- Installed fit: Verify the width and thickness with the heatsink and any other thermal parts attached.
- Thermal hardware: Confirm whether a suitable heatsink is integrated or whether a separate, dimensionally compatible solution is needed.
- Compatibility evidence: Treat Sony’s specifications as requirements, not a guarantee that every third-party model will work.
- Capacity and cost: Match capacity to the space you need and compare current prices. Advertised sequential speed alone does not establish better in-game performance.
As one official example—not a universal recommendation—PlayStation identifies the WD_BLACK SN850P as officially licensed, with an integrated heatsink and options up to 8 TB on its accessories page. Sony’s system update announcement documents the increase in supported maximum capacity from 4 TB to 8 TB.

Installation details vary by console model, so follow the guide for your specific PS5 and region rather than assuming every model has identical steps. Sony’s guide calls for turning off and unplugging the console, letting it cool, and working on a soft cloth over a flat surface. The general sequence is:
