PS5 Slim vs. original PS5: What’s different and which should you buy?

Choose the PS5 Slim if you are buying new and want a smaller, lighter console; choose the disc-equipped version if you use physical games or movies. The Slim does not offer a cited gaming-performance increase over an original PS5. Its practical differences are the reduced chassis, lower weight, edition-dependent storage, and a detachable drive option on the Slim Digital Edition. An original PS5 that works well remains a sensible choice unless you need more storage, a smaller enclosure, a replacement warranty, or a newer bundle.

Sony describes the redesign as putting the same core PS5 features into a smaller form factor. The exact comparison depends on the model number: the figures below use Sony’s CFI-1200 original-form-factor reference and CFI-21XX Slim documentation.

PS5 Slim and original PS5: the short verdict

  • Best default for a new buyer: PS5 Slim with an integrated disc drive if you buy physical PS5 or PS4 games, watch Blu-ray or DVD movies, or want the option to resell and trade discs.
  • Best for an all-digital library: PS5 Slim Digital Edition, provided its lower price still makes sense after considering the optional detachable drive.
  • Best choice for most existing owners: Keep the original PS5. The Slim is a smaller redesign, not a documented performance upgrade.
  • Upgrade reasons that do make sense: a damaged or out-of-warranty console, limited internal storage, a much smaller entertainment-center footprint, or a new warranty and bundle.

Sony’s US product page says that “the same features that make PS5 the best place to play have been packed into a smaller form factor, with a 1TB SSD for more internal storage.” That wording describes the Slim’s positioning, but it should not be stretched into a claim that every internal component or every revision is identical to every original PS5.

What changed in the PS5 Slim

A substantially smaller and lighter enclosure

Using Sony’s published specifications, the CFI-21XX Slim disc model measures approximately 358 × 96 × 216 mm and weighs about 3.1 kg. The CFI-1200 original-form-factor disc model measures approximately 390 × 104 × 260 mm and weighs about 3.9 kg. That makes the cited Slim disc model about 32 mm shorter, 8 mm narrower, 44 mm less deep, and 0.8 kg lighter than the cited CFI-1200 reference.

  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

The Slim Digital Edition is smaller still in one dimension and lighter: approximately 358 × 80 × 216 mm and 2.5 kg. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Sony’s product page also describes more than 30% reduced volume and weight reductions of 18% and 24% versus previous models, but the FAQ wording does not identify one exact previous model. Do not treat those percentages as a universal comparison with every original PS5 revision.

Storage depends on the edition

The Slim disc model’s nominal custom SSD capacity is 1TB. The cited Slim Digital model lists 825GB. Sony’s CFI-1200 specification also lists 825GB for the original-form-factor reference. The original digital line varies by revision; Sony’s current US listing describes an 825GB Digital Edition, so the model number matters before you quote a capacity.

Nominal capacity is not the same as free space. System software and required functions reserve part of the SSD, so every model presents less usable storage than the number printed on the box. A 1TB Slim is therefore a storage advantage over an 825GB model, but it is not a full additional 175GB available for games.

The drive arrangement is different

An original disc PS5 has its optical drive integrated into the console. An original Digital Edition has no drive. The Slim disc model also has an integrated drive, while the Slim Digital Edition can accept Sony’s separately sold detachable drive.

The detachable drive is designed for the Slim CFI-2000 family and PS5 Pro, not the original CFI-1000 chassis. Pairing requires an internet connection during setup. If you may buy discs later, compare the complete cost of the Slim Digital Edition plus the current drive price instead of assuming the digital console will remain cheaper in the long term.

PS5 Slim vs. original PS5 specifications

Buying factor Original-form-factor PS5 reference PS5 Slim reference Why it matters
Disc-model storage 825GB custom SSD on the CFI-1200 reference 1TB custom SSD on the CFI-21XX disc model The Slim disc model has greater nominal capacity; reserved system space reduces usable capacity on both.
Digital-model storage Original digital models vary by revision; Sony’s current US listing describes 825GB 825GB custom SSD on the cited CFI-21XX digital model Do not apply the Slim disc model’s 1TB figure to the Slim Digital Edition.

Disc-model mass Approximately 3.9 kg Approximately 3.1 kg The Slim is easier to move and handle.
Digital-model dimensions Revision-dependent Approximately 358 × 80 × 216 mm The Slim Digital Edition is thinner than the Slim disc model.
Digital-model mass Revision-dependent Approximately 2.5 kg The drive-free Slim is the lightest cited configuration.
Vertical placement The CFI-1000 setup uses its base; check the exact revision The CFI-2000 requires the official vertical stand, sold separately Add the stand to the setup cost if your furniture requires upright placement.
Core platform features PS5 platform features Sony describes the same PS5 features in a smaller form factor There is no cited basis for buying Slim as a faster gaming machine.

All figures in this table are Sony specifications for the named model groups. They should not be presented as measurements that apply to every original PS5 revision.

Does the PS5 Slim perform better?

No performance improvement is established by the cited Sony material. Sony positions Slim around the same PS5 feature set in a smaller body. The cited Sony material contains no independent frame-rate benchmark, loading-time test, thermal comparison, noise measurement, or reliability study showing that Slim renders games faster or more quietly.

PlayStation 5 Disc Edition Console (slim)
  • Model Number CFI-2000
  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, Disc Drive, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold separately

That means an original PS5 and a Slim should be judged by the same practical gaming requirements: the games you play, your display, network connection, controller setup, and storage needs. A Slim may feel like a better product in a cramped cabinet because it is smaller, but that is a space and handling benefit rather than a graphics upgrade.

Which edition should you buy?

Choose the Slim with a disc drive when physical media matters

The disc model is the straightforward choice if you own PS5 or PS4 discs, borrow games, buy used copies, trade games after finishing them, or use the console as a Blu-ray or DVD player. The integrated drive avoids a later accessory purchase and removes the need to check whether a separately purchased drive is compatible.

It also preserves flexibility. You can still download digital games on a disc-equipped console, while a digital-only console cannot read a physical game until a compatible drive is installed. Compare like-for-like bundles, because a retailer may package a console with games or a second controller that changes the effective value.

Choose the Slim Digital Edition when your library is digital

The Digital Edition is the compact option for buyers who purchase games through the PlayStation Store and do not need movie discs. Its cited Slim capacity is 825GB, not the 1TB listed for the Slim disc model, so the apparent price difference should be weighed against storage and future drive needs.

A digital console can later accept Sony’s detachable drive, but that route has three requirements: the console must be in the compatible Slim CFI-2000 family, the drive is a separate purchase, and an internet connection is required for setup pairing. The drive is not a retrofit for the original CFI-1000 chassis. If you already know you want discs, buying the integrated-drive Slim is usually the simpler comparison.

Choose the original PS5 when you already own one

Keep an original PS5 that is working reliably if its size fits your furniture and its storage is adequate. Selling it and buying Slim does not come with a cited performance benefit. An upgrade becomes easier to justify when the original console needs repair, has no remaining useful warranty, is difficult to fit in your setup, or you want the Slim disc model’s nominal 1TB capacity.

Disc drive, stand and placement considerations

Horizontal placement

Sony’s getting-started guidance identifies model-specific feet or bases for horizontal placement. Use the feet supplied for the exact console rather than assuming an original base fits a Slim. The Slim’s included horizontal feet are the supplied tabletop arrangement.

Vertical placement

The Slim CFI-2000 requires the official vertical stand for upright placement, and Sony lists that stand separately. Include its cost before deciding that Slim is cheaper or that it will fit your current vertical setup without additional parts. Sony’s accessories information lists the compatible vertical stand for original CFI-1000 and Slim CFI-2000 groups; check the model number rather than relying on the console’s appearance.

Adding the detachable drive

  1. Confirm that the console is a Slim CFI-2000-series Digital Edition or another listed compatible model. Do not attempt to fit the drive to an original CFI-1000 Digital Edition.
  2. Turn off and unplug the console, then follow Sony’s drive instruction manual for removing the relevant cover and attaching the drive. The drive’s manual is available at Sony’s Disc Drive Instruction Manual.
  3. Connect the console to the internet for the required setup pairing. Without that connection, the first-time drive setup cannot complete.
  4. After pairing, insert a supported game or movie disc and let the console install any required system update before troubleshooting playback.

The drive decision is therefore not only about the accessory’s price. It also affects setup time, model compatibility and whether you have reliable internet access where the console is installed.

Storage: internal space and expansion

The 1TB Slim disc model gives you more nominal internal capacity than the 825GB references, but large modern games can still consume the available space quickly. Keep the reserved system capacity in mind when estimating how many installations will fit.

Sony’s CFI-21XX manual supports adding a commercially available M.2 SSD for storage expansion. Because requirements and supported specifications can change, use the current installation instructions and compatibility requirements in Sony’s documentation rather than choosing a drive solely by advertised capacity. Expansion is useful for a large digital library, but it does not change the console’s graphics performance.

How to decide in four steps

  1. Inventory your media. Count the physical PS5 and PS4 games you still use and decide whether Blu-ray or DVD playback matters. If either answer is yes, start with a disc-equipped model or include the compatible Slim drive in the budget.
  2. Measure the shelf. Compare the available width, depth and height with the model’s orientation. The cited Slim disc dimensions are 358 × 96 × 216 mm; the cited original CFI-1200 disc dimensions are 390 × 104 × 260 mm. Leave room for ventilation and cable bends rather than treating those figures as the entire installation envelope.
  3. Calculate usable storage needs. Compare the Slim disc model’s 1TB nominal SSD with the 825GB figures for the cited Slim Digital and original CFI-1200 references. Remember that system functions reserve some space.
  4. Price the complete setup. Compare the exact console, edition, included games, controller count, stand, detachable drive, retailer warranty and return terms. Sony’s US purchase page sends buyers to retailers and does not publish one fixed public console price, so a single headline price cannot be treated as universal.

Buying and pricing guidance

Sony’s current US purchase page presents a 1TB disc console and an 825GB all-digital model, then directs shoppers to retailers. Because retailer prices, stock, bundles and promotions change, check the live listing on the day you buy. The relevant comparison is the total delivered setup, not only the console sticker price.

  • Verify whether the listing is disc or digital.
  • Check the CFI model group when accessory compatibility matters.
  • Confirm whether a disc drive is included or must be purchased separately.
  • Check bundled games, controller quantity and regional packaging.
  • Add the official vertical stand if you need upright placement on a Slim.
  • Read the retailer’s return, warranty and refurbished-product terms.

Use Sony’s PS5 purchase page as the starting point for the current US edition list, then compare equivalent listings rather than mixing a digital console bundle with a disc-console bundle.

How to identify the right model before buying accessories

Model revisions are important because Sony’s manuals group dimensions, storage and compatibility by CFI number. Check the model number printed on the console label and packaging, and match it with the manual or accessory listing. The CFI-1200 figures in this guide describe one original-form-factor reference; they do not automatically describe every earlier or later original PS5.

  • Slim Design / Ray Tracing / Up to 120fps with 120Hz output / HDR Technology
  • Adaptive Triggers / Backwards Compatibility & Game Boost

For accessories, the distinction is especially important. Sony’s detachable drive compatibility is for the Slim CFI-2000 family and PS5 Pro, while the official vertical-stand listing covers specified original CFI-1000 and Slim CFI-2000 groups. If a listing omits the CFI group, confirm compatibility before ordering.

Answers to common PS5 Slim questions

Is the PS5 Slim better than the original PS5?

It is better for buyers who value a smaller, lighter body or, on the Slim disc model, more nominal internal storage. It is not established as better for frame rates or graphics. For an owner whose original console works well, the redesign alone is not a compelling upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the PS5 Slim more powerful?

There is no cited evidence here of a gaming-performance increase. Sony describes the Slim as retaining the PS5 feature set in a smaller form factor, so treat it as a physical and configuration revision rather than a higher-performance tier.

Does the PS5 Slim Digital Edition have a disc drive?

No. It ships as a digital console. The compatible Slim Digital Edition can accept Sony’s detachable drive as a separate purchase, and setup pairing requires an internet connection.

Can you add a disc drive to the original PS5 Digital Edition?

Do not assume so. Sony’s detachable-drive compatibility is specified for the Slim CFI-2000 family and PS5 Pro, not the original CFI-1000 chassis.

Is the vertical stand included with the Slim?

Sony says the Slim’s vertical stand is sold separately. The included horizontal feet are the supplied tabletop arrangement, so budget for the stand if your furniture requires upright placement.

Which PS5 has more storage?

Among the cited model groups, the Slim disc model lists 1TB, while the cited Slim Digital and original CFI-1200 references list 825GB. Actual free space is lower because system functions reserve part of the SSD.
