For most new buyers, the PS5 Slim is the more practical console: it is substantially smaller and lighter and its listed SSD capacity is higher. It is not a performance upgrade, however. Sony’s specifications for the Slim and the representative original CFI-12XX disc model show the same CPU class, GPU class, graphics figure and memory amount. If you already own a working original PS5, changing to a Slim makes sense mainly for space, handling or storage reasons—not faster games.
The biggest buying decision is the disc configuration. A Slim with a built-in drive is ready for physical games and supported movie discs. A Slim Digital Edition needs a separately sold compatible drive if you later decide you want discs, and PlayStation requires an internet connection to pair that drive during setup.

The dimensions, weights, storage figures and expansion information come from PlayStation’s CFI-20XX and CFI-12XXA safety guides. Sony states that design and specifications can change, and the original PS5 has multiple model groups. Treat the table as a precise comparison of the cited groups rather than a universal specification for every original console.
#1 Best Overall

How much smaller and lighter is the Slim?
Footprint on a shelf
At approximately 358 × 80 × 216 mm, the CFI-20XX Slim is 32 mm shorter, 24 mm narrower and 44 mm less deep than the approximately 390 × 104 × 260 mm CFI-12XX example. Those differences matter when the console has to fit beside a television, inside a media cabinet or on a shallow desk. Measure the available space rather than relying on the product name: the published dimensions exclude projecting parts, and your cable bend radius and ventilation clearance still need room.
Moving and handling
The cited Slim weighs approximately 2.6 kg, compared with approximately 3.9 kg for the cited original disc model. That 1.3 kg difference is noticeable when carrying the console between rooms, packing it for a move or lifting it onto a high shelf. It does not change how games run, but it can make regular handling less awkward.
Model-group caution
Original PS5 units were sold in several CFI model groups, so an older or different original may not match the CFI-12XX dimensions or mass. Slim systems also have distinct model groups. Check the model number printed on the console, packaging or listing before using a dimension or accessory claim to plan a purchase.
Does the PS5 Slim perform better?
CPU, GPU and memory specifications
In the cited guides, both consoles use an AMD Zen 2 processor with eight cores and 16 threads, an AMD Radeon RDNA-based graphics engine rated at 10 TFLOPS and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. Those are the principal hardware figures that determine the console’s game-performance tier. Nothing in these specifications supports promising higher frame rates, sharper graphics or a faster CPU from the Slim alone.
What to expect in games
A game that offers a 30-frame-per-second quality mode and a 60-frame-per-second performance mode on an original PS5 should offer the same modes on an equivalently configured Slim. The Slim is a redesign for size, mass and capacity, not a new generation. Game patches, display settings and the developer’s implementation still determine the modes available in any particular title.
Do not confuse Slim with PS5 Pro
The Slim designation identifies a smaller revision of the standard PS5 family. It should not be treated as the higher-performance PS5 Pro tier. If your priority is rendering performance, compare the Pro’s specifications separately; the CFI-20XX Slim-versus-CFI-12XX figures here show no CPU or GPU class increase.
Loading and system responsiveness
Both systems use a custom internal SSD, and the cited specifications do not establish a faster storage interface or a different CPU/GPU tier for the Slim. You may see different loading behavior because of a game update, a fresh installation, background downloads or available free space, but the model change itself is not evidence of a guaranteed loading-time improvement.
Rank #2
Storage: 1 TB versus 825 GB
Nominal capacity
The CFI-20XX Slim guide lists a 1 TB custom SSD. The cited CFI-12XXA guide lists an 825 GB custom SSD. The Slim therefore gives you 175 GB more nominal capacity on paper, which can delay the point at which you need to remove games.
Usable space is lower
Neither figure is the amount available for game installs. The operating system, recovery tools and reserved system data occupy part of the drive, so the free space shown in Settings will be lower. Install sizes also vary by game, language packs and optional high-resolution assets. Use the console’s storage screen—not the printed capacity—to decide how many games you can keep installed.
Expansion with an M.2 SSD
Both cited console guides include an M.2 SSD expansion connector. That gives owners an optional route to additional game storage, but a drive is not interchangeable just because it is an M.2 model. PlayStation specifies interface, physical-size, heatsink and performance requirements for compatible PS5 storage, and those requirements can be updated. Check the current PlayStation installation guidance for your exact console model before buying a drive; no particular SSD model is established here as a recommendation.
Disc editions and the detachable drive
Built-in drive: simplest for physical media
The original disc PS5 in this comparison has its optical drive installed at the factory. The PS5 Slim is sold both as a disc model and as a Digital Edition. A Slim disc model also includes the drive, so you can use compatible physical PS5 and PS4 game media and supported movie discs without another hardware purchase.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Digital Edition: plan for the total cost
The Slim Digital Edition can accept a separately sold detachable drive, but compatibility is limited to specified Slim model groups. PlayStation’s product information identifies CFI-2000 groups and also references current CFI-2100 groups; verify the model number and regional package before ordering. A detachable drive is an additional purchase, so compare the combined console-and-drive cost with a disc bundle rather than comparing the digital console’s sticker price alone.
Internet pairing is required
PlayStation says an internet connection is needed to pair the detachable drive with the console during setup. This requirement matters if you are installing the drive in a location with no network access or if you are buying a used drive and expect it to work immediately offline. Complete the pairing before relying on the drive for a trip or an offline setup.
Supported media
The detachable-drive manual lists support for PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, supported PS4 Blu-ray discs, Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE, DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW and AVCHD. The wording is deliberately specific: do not assume that every disc from every PlayStation generation is supported. Check the manual’s compatibility notes for the exact disc type you own.

Questions to answer before choosing digital
- Do you already own PS5 or PS4 game discs?
- Do you buy used games, lend discs or resell them?
- Do you want supported 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD playback?
- Will you have internet access when pairing an optional drive?
- Is the listing clearly marked as a Slim Digital Edition that accepts the drive, rather than an incompatible model?
Should an existing original-PS5 owner upgrade?
Reasons the switch can be worthwhile
- Your media cabinet or desk cannot comfortably accommodate the original console’s larger footprint.
- You frequently move the console and want the approximately 2.6 kg Slim instead of the approximately 3.9 kg CFI-12XX example.
- You want the Slim’s 1 TB nominal SSD rather than the original model’s 825 GB capacity.
- Your current console needs replacement and a Slim is the readily available model with a warranty.
Reasons to keep the original
- Your existing console already fits your space and provides the performance you need.
- You expect a substantial frame-rate or graphics improvement; the cited specifications do not provide one.
- You would need to buy a detachable drive to preserve physical-media use on a Slim Digital Edition.
- Your original console, games and accessories are in good condition and replacing them would add cost without changing the game-performance tier.
For an owner deciding purely on speed, the evidence points to keeping the original. For an owner constrained by space, weight or storage, calculate the practical value of the redesign against the price of replacing a working console.
Which model should a new buyer choose?
Choose a Slim disc model when
- You own physical PS5 or PS4 games.
- You want supported movie-disc playback.
- You buy used games or want the option to trade and lend discs.
- You prefer a ready-to-use drive rather than a later pairing and accessory purchase.
Choose a Slim Digital Edition when
- You buy games digitally and do not need optical media.
- You value the smallest initial package and accept that a compatible drive costs extra if your needs change.
- You have confirmed the exact Slim model group and understand the internet-pairing requirement.
Consider an original PS5 when
- You find a clean, warranted unit at a meaningfully lower local price.
- The larger chassis is acceptable in your setup.
- You want a built-in disc drive and the offer’s condition and warranty are better than those of a comparable Slim.
There is no performance-based reason to pay extra for the Slim over an equivalent original if all you want is the same game experience. Conversely, a small price difference can favor the Slim when its reduced footprint, lower mass and 1 TB drive solve a real problem.
How to compare the actual offers
Current prices, bundles, stock and resale values vary by country, retailer, date and condition, and they were not established by the specifications cited here. Use the following checklist when comparing listings:
- Identify the model group. Record the CFI number and whether the console is a disc model or Digital Edition.
- List everything in the box. Confirm the console, controller, power cable, HDMI cable, stand or other included accessories.
- Add disc hardware. For a Digital Edition, include the price of a compatible detachable drive if you may need one.
- Check warranty and condition. A used original with no warranty is not directly comparable to a new Slim with retailer coverage.
- Compare the bundle’s real value. A game voucher or extra controller can change the effective cost, but only if you would otherwise buy that item.
- Verify regional compatibility. Packaging, drive availability and support terms can differ by market.
Accessories and installation considerations
Vertical stands and covers
PlayStation lists console covers, extra storage, a removable drive and a charging station among its accessories. Its product information says the vertical stand is compatible with CFI-1000 and Slim CFI-2000 model groups. Compatibility is model-specific, so do not assume that a stand or cover made for one revision fits another. Match the accessory’s stated CFI range to the number on your console.
Ventilation and placement
The Slim’s smaller dimensions do not eliminate ventilation needs. Leave the clearances specified in the console’s safety documentation, avoid enclosed cabinets that trap heat and keep the air intakes free of dust. When measuring a shelf, include the projecting parts excluded from the published dimensions and space for power, HDMI and network cables.

If you add storage, use PlayStation’s current installation procedure for your model. The drive must meet the required interface, dimensions, heatsink and performance specifications. Shut the console down correctly, disconnect it from power, install the drive as directed and format it when prompted; formatting erases data on the new drive. Do not buy on the M.2 label alone.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming “Slim” means faster
The cited CPU, GPU, graphics figure and memory amount are unchanged. Treat the Slim as a physical redesign with more nominal storage, not a frame-rate upgrade.
Rank #4
Comparing a digital console without its future drive cost
If physical media matters to you, price the compatible drive at the same time as the Slim Digital Edition. Also confirm that the console’s CFI group is one PlayStation supports.
Applying one original-PS5 measurement to every revision
The 390 × 104 × 260 mm and 3.9 kg figures describe the cited CFI-12XX example. Other original model groups may differ. Use the model number on the actual listing or console.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConfusing nominal and usable storage
System software reserves part of every internal SSD. Compare the free-space figure shown by each console if storage is the deciding factor, and remember that game-install sizes differ.
Buying an accessory by appearance
Stands, covers and detachable drives are not automatically universal. Match the accessory’s compatibility list to the exact CFI model and edition.
Bottom line for different buyers
Best fit for a space-conscious new buyer
The PS5 Slim disc model combines the smaller chassis, lower listed mass and 1 TB nominal SSD with the convenience of a factory-installed drive. It is the straightforward choice when those physical advantages matter and the offer is competitively priced.
Best fit for a digital-only buyer
The Slim Digital Edition is sensible if you are committed to downloads and do not need discs. Decide in advance whether the possibility of buying a detachable drive—and pairing it online later—is worth the flexibility.
