Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse Rest Mode when you want downloads, updates, network wake, USB charging or a suspended game to remain available. Turn the PS5 off when you want the lowest possible standby use or will leave it idle for a long time. Rest Mode is a low-power state, not a complete shutdown, and its power draw depends on which features you enable. Sony does not identify one setting as best for every owner.
The practical choice is configurable. You can leave internet access on while disabling USB power, for example, or turn on network wake only when you regularly use Remote Play. Think of Rest Mode as a group of optional background services rather than a single fixed power level.

What is the difference between PS5 Rest Mode and turning it off?
Sony describes three PS5 power states: on, Rest Mode and off. In Rest Mode, the console stays on at reduced power so selected background functions can continue. When you choose Turn Off PS5, the console shuts down instead of maintaining those functions.

|---|---|---|
| On | Games, apps and all normal console functions | Active play or use |
| Rest Mode | Features you have enabled, such as internet downloads, network wake, USB power and some syncing | You want the PS5 ready in the background |
| Off | No Rest Mode background functions until you start the console again | You want a complete shutdown and minimum standby activity |
Sony’s quick-start documentation summarizes Rest Mode as: “In rest mode, your console stays on, but at a lower power consumption.” That distinction matters: pressing the power button once or selecting Enter Rest Mode does not fully shut down the system.

Rest Mode also is not the same as leaving a game actively running with the display on. The PS5 suspends activity and reduces its power state, while only the functions you have selected continue in the background. A fully off console has no network connection, USB charging or Rest Mode synchronization until you power it on again.
PS5 Rest Mode vs. Turning It Off: Which Should You Use?
Choose based on what the console needs to do while you are away rather than on a universal nightly rule.
| Choose | When it makes sense | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Rest Mode | You want selected downloads or updates, remote wake through the PlayStation App or Remote Play, controller charging from the console, or a suspended game or app available | The PS5 remains in a low-power state. Every enabled Rest Mode feature can increase energy use, and each function requires the appropriate setting |
| Turn Off PS5 | You do not need background functions and want the console fully off, especially during a long period of non-use | Downloads, updates, network wake and console USB charging stop until you start the PS5 again |
If your priority is minimum standby consumption, turn it off. If readiness and background tasks save you time, Rest Mode is the practical choice.
A quick decision test
- Will you need a download, update, cloud sync or Remote Play while you are away?
- Do you want to charge a controller from the PS5’s USB port?
- Will the console be unused long enough that standby consumption matters more than immediate readiness?
- Have you enabled only the Rest Mode functions you actually need?
A “yes” to one of the first two questions generally favors Rest Mode. A “yes” to the third, with no need for background functions, favors a full shutdown. If you are unsure, turn off individual Rest Mode features rather than assuming the console must be either completely active or completely off.
What Rest Mode can do, and which settings it needs
Keep downloads and updates running
To allow downloads or updates while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet. Turn on the automatic download and install options you want in the relevant system or game settings.
Internet connectivity is the prerequisite; Rest Mode alone does not guarantee that a download will continue. If the network option is disabled, the console cannot fetch a pending update while it sleeps. You can therefore keep Rest Mode for other reasons while leaving internet access off, but downloads and online synchronization will not work during that period.
This does not guarantee that every update will install without intervention. Sony notes that some updates can still require your approval. If a game is waiting for confirmation, Rest Mode cannot bypass that requirement. Check the console after returning if an important update appears not to have completed.

Remote Play and the PlayStation App can turn on a PS5 that is in Rest Mode when the network-wake option is enabled. In the same Rest Mode features menu, turn on Enable Turning On PS5 from Network.
A fully powered-off PS5 cannot be awakened by that setting. If remote wake is unreliable, verify that the console is actually in Rest Mode, remains connected to the internet and has this option enabled. Turning on internet access for downloads and enabling network wake are separate choices: you can use one without necessarily using the other.
Supply power to a controller over USB
Rest Mode can provide USB power for charging a controller, but this is optional. In the Rest Mode features, enable Supply Power to USB Ports and choose the available duration that matches your routine. Current model groups may also show an Adaptive charging option.
Depending on the option presented by your model, USB power can be available continuously, for a limited period or through Adaptive charging. A time-limited setting can explain why a controller that charged successfully overnight does not receive power after a later, longer session.

If you already use a separate charging station, disabling console USB power avoids leaving the PS5 responsible for charging. A charging station is not required for Rest Mode; it is simply a reason some owners prefer to turn this feature off. Confirm compatibility before buying any third-party or dedicated DualSense charging accessory.
Sync saves with cloud storage
PS5 save auto-sync can run when a game closes or when the console enters Rest Mode, provided the console has an internet connection and the relevant automatic update and auto-sync settings are enabled. Cloud storage requires a PlayStation Plus membership.
Auto-sync and cloud storage are related but not identical to game downloads. You need connectivity and the appropriate synchronization or upload settings, and the membership requirement still applies. Rest Mode by itself does not create cloud backups when connectivity, automatic sync or the required membership is missing.
If a save does not appear in cloud storage, check those conditions first. Also verify that the game was closed or the console entered Rest Mode, since the documented sync triggers are those events rather than every moment the console is powered on.
Keep a suspended game or app available
Rest Mode is useful when you want to return to a suspended game or app without treating the console as fully off. This convenience is lost when you select Turn Off PS5; the system must start again before you use the game or app.
Suspension should not be confused with a cloud save. A suspended session is local console state, while cloud storage is an online backup service with its own internet, settings and PlayStation Plus requirements.
How to configure Rest Mode deliberately
| Goal | Setting to enable | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Downloads and updates | Stay Connected to the Internet; automatic download/install choices as desired | Some updates may still request approval |
| Remote Play or app wake | Enable Turning On PS5 from Network | The PS5 must be in Rest Mode, not off |
| Controller charging | Supply Power to USB Ports, with the available duration or Adaptive option | Disable it if you use a separate charging station |
| Cloud save sync | Internet access plus automatic sync or upload settings | PlayStation Plus is required for cloud storage |
After changing a setting, put the console into Rest Mode and test the particular function you care about. For example, confirm that a phone can wake the console before relying on Remote Play while away. This avoids treating a general Rest Mode icon as proof that every optional feature is active.

How to put a PS5 in Rest Mode
- Press the PS button on the controller to open the control center.
- Select Power.
- Choose Enter Rest Mode.
Sony also says you can press the console’s power button once. The indicator should change to the Rest Mode state rather than going through a complete shutdown. Give the console time to complete any transition before moving cables or switching outlets.
How to turn the PS5 completely off
- Press the PS button and open the control center.
- Select Power.
- Choose Turn Off PS5.
- Wait until the power indicator stops flashing and turns off before disconnecting the AC cable.
On the CFI-7000 model group covered by Sony’s current quick-start guide, white indicates that the console is on, orange indicates Rest Mode and no light indicates that it is fully off. Other hardware revisions can use different labels or behavior, so consult the documentation for your model if the indicator does not match.
Use the menu command even if you are shutting down for only a short time. The command lets the PS5 finish its transition cleanly; cutting power at the outlet is not a substitute for Turn Off PS5.
Does PS5 Rest Mode use a lot of electricity?
Rest Mode uses less power than an active PS5, but it is not zero-power operation. Sony’s support guidance says that when Rest Mode features are enabled, the console does not automatically lower consumption below 0.5 W, and that power use rises as more Rest Mode features are enabled. Sony’s environmental guidance describes gameplay suspension at “0.5 W or less.” These are Sony’s general statements, not independent meter measurements for every PS5 model and setting combination.
The 0.5 W language is a threshold or general guidance, not a promise that every configuration consumes exactly 0.5 W. A PS5 supplying USB power, maintaining network connectivity and handling another background task can use more than a minimally configured Rest Mode console.

There is no single daily or annual cost that applies to all PS5 owners. Your cost depends on the console revision, enabled Rest Mode functions, hours spent in each state and local electricity tariff. To calculate it accurately, measure the console’s actual wattage in your chosen configuration, convert watt-hours to kilowatt-hours and multiply by your utility’s rate. Without those inputs, a claimed savings figure would be guesswork.
For example, the calculation is: wattage × hours ÷ 1,000 = kilowatt-hours, then kilowatt-hours × your tariff = cost. Use the wattage measured for your own model and settings, not the 0.5 W statement as a universal meter reading. Compare the same period in Rest Mode and fully off if you want a personal estimate.
The useful rule is directional: enabling more background functions generally increases Rest Mode consumption, while turning the console off removes that standby activity. The difference matters most when the PS5 remains idle for many hours or days, not when you are actively playing.
Which setting fits common situations?
You play again later the same day
Rest Mode is convenient if you want the console ready, need a download to finish or plan to use Remote Play. Enable only the features you actually use so the PS5 is not maintaining unnecessary services.
You are leaving for a weekend or longer
Turn the PS5 off if you do not need downloads, remote wake, USB charging or syncing during that period. Full shutdown is the clearer choice when the console will sit idle and minimum standby use matters more than instant readiness.
You want an overnight update
Use Rest Mode, confirm Stay Connected to the Internet is enabled and check the automatic download or install settings. Remember that an update requiring approval may still wait for you.
You use Remote Play
Leave the PS5 in Rest Mode and enable Enable Turning On PS5 from Network. Turning the console off defeats network wake until you start it manually.
You charge a controller from the console
Use Rest Mode with Supply Power to USB Ports enabled, or select a time-limited or Adaptive option when available. If you charge elsewhere, disable console USB power.
You are concerned about standby energy
Turn the PS5 off, particularly when it will not be used for an extended period. If you prefer Rest Mode, reduce consumption by disabling features you do not need.
You are troubleshooting a game or app
A complete shutdown removes Rest Mode background activity and gives you a clean start the next time you power on. It is not a required nightly maintenance step, but it is sensible when you will not use the console and do not need any background service.
Safety: never unplug an active or blinking PS5
Do not pull the AC plug while the indicator is lit or blinking. Sony warns that disconnecting power during those states can cause data loss, data corruption or damage to the console. Use Power > Turn Off PS5, then wait for the indicator to go completely dark before removing the cable.
The same caution applies if the console appears to be changing states. A flashing indicator means the shutdown or transition is not finished; wait rather than forcing it. If you need to move the console, unplug only after the indicator is off.

What to check when a Rest Mode feature is not working
- Downloads are paused: Confirm Stay Connected to the Internet and the automatic download or install choices. Check whether the update requires approval.
- Remote wake fails: Make sure the PS5 is in Rest Mode, not fully off, and that Enable Turning On PS5 from Network is on.
- The controller is not charging: Check Supply Power to USB Ports, its selected duration and the cable connection. A time-limited option may have already expired.
- Saves are missing from cloud storage: Verify internet access, automatic sync or upload settings and an active PlayStation Plus membership.
- The indicator behavior seems different: Check the guide for your exact hardware group and software version. The white, orange and off indications listed above come from the CFI-7000 quick-start guide.
- The console wakes unexpectedly: Review whether network wake is enabled and whether you actually need it. Disable Enable Turning On PS5 from Network if remote wake is not part of your routine.
- USB power is unnecessary: Turn off Supply Power to USB Ports, especially if a dedicated charging station is already in use.
Frequently asked questions
Should I leave my PS5 in Rest Mode or turn it off?
Leave it in Rest Mode when you need downloads, updates, Remote Play wake, USB charging, synchronization or a suspended session. Turn it off when you need none of those functions and want to minimize standby activity, particularly during a long period of non-use.

Is Rest Mode the same as shutting down?
No. Rest Mode keeps the console on at lower power. Turning Off PS5 completes the shutdown, so Rest Mode background functions are unavailable until you start the console again.
Does PS5 Rest Mode use a lot of electricity?
It uses less than active play but is not zero-power. Sony says consumption rises as more Rest Mode features are enabled and discusses a 0.5 W threshold or less in its guidance. Your actual cost requires a wattage measurement, time in each state and your local electricity rate.
Can the PS5 download games while turned off?
No. Downloads and updates during inactivity require Rest Mode with Stay Connected to the Internet enabled, along with the relevant automatic download or install settings. A fully off console cannot perform those Rest Mode tasks.

No. Enable Enable Turning On PS5 from Network and leave the console in Rest Mode. The network-wake setting does not start a fully powered-off PS5.
Will my controller charge in Rest Mode?
It can, if Supply Power to USB Ports is enabled and the selected duration has not expired. Some current model groups offer Adaptive charging. If you use another charging station, you can disable console USB power.
Does Rest Mode automatically back up saves?
Save auto-sync can occur when a game closes or the console enters Rest Mode, but internet access and the applicable auto-sync or upload settings are required. PlayStation Plus is required for cloud storage.
Is it safe to unplug a PS5 in Rest Mode?
Do not unplug it while the indicator is lit or blinking. First select Power > Turn Off PS5 and wait until the indicator is completely off. Sony warns that premature disconnection can cause data loss, corruption or console damage.

Bottom line for most PS5 owners
Rest Mode is the better convenience setting: it keeps selected downloads, updates, network wake, charging and synchronization available while using less power than leaving the console on. Turning the PS5 off is the better efficiency and long-idle setting because those background functions stop and the console reaches a complete shutdown.
Configure Rest Mode deliberately instead of treating it as all-or-nothing. Enable internet access, network wake, USB power or cloud synchronization only when you need each one. When you do not need any of them, select Turn Off PS5 and wait for the indicator to go dark before disconnecting power.
