To let your PS5 download while it is in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet. Then start or confirm the download and put the console in Rest Mode—not fully off. Sony says this setting allows downloads of games bought through PlayStation App and pre-ordered games.
Enable downloads while the PS5 is in Rest Mode
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Go to System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Start or confirm the game download on the console, then open the power menu and choose Enter Rest Mode. Do not choose Turn Off PS5; that fully turns off the console.
Sony’s power-saving settings guide says that, while connected to the internet in Rest Mode, the PS5 can download games bought on PlayStation App and pre-ordered games.

Start a download from PlayStation App
If you are away from the console, use the app to initiate the download. The PS5 must be paired with the app, signed in to the same account, connected to the internet in Rest Mode, and have Stay Connected to the Internet enabled.

- Select the game and tap Download.
- Leave the paired PS5 in Rest Mode. The app will notify you when the download completes.
These steps follow Sony’s PlayStation App game-download instructions. If you are at the console, start or manage the download there instead; the app is only needed to initiate it remotely.

Set automatic updates separately
Automatic game and app updates use a different setting from downloading a newly purchased game. First enable the Rest Mode internet connection as above, then go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates. Choose Auto-Download and/or Auto-Install in Rest Mode, depending on whether you want updates downloaded, installed, or both.
If you want to keep a suspended game open, Sony says to enable Auto-Download without Auto-Install. The update downloads in Rest Mode; you can decide whether to install it after resuming the game. See Sony’s automatic-update guidance.

Stay Connected to the Internet is the Rest Mode setting Sony identifies for downloads and updates. Enable Turning on PS5 from Network is separate: it lets the app or Remote Play wake the console over a network. It is not identified as a requirement for an already-started download to continue. For Remote Play while the console is in Rest Mode, Sony says to enable both settings; see its Remote Play setup instructions.

If a download does not continue
- Confirm that Stay Connected to the Internet is still enabled and the console is in Rest Mode rather than turned off.
- Check the PS5’s internet connection and look at the on-screen download queue for its current status.
- If an update requests approval, follow the console prompt. For unresolved issues, use current PlayStation Support guidance or PlayStation Repairs; Sony does not provide a complete stalled-download troubleshooting sequence on the pages cited here.
Rest Mode power use
Sony notes that enabling more Rest Mode features increases power consumption. Its guidance does not give a specific wattage for this download setup, so there is no reliable figure to quote here.
