Yes, you can play games installed on your PS5 while away from home by streaming them through Sony’s PS Remote Play app. Before you leave, enable Remote Play, configure rest-mode network wake, sign in with the same PlayStation account on both devices, and test the connection. Away from home, the experience depends more on latency and connection stability than on headline download speed; Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download as a baseline and recommends at least 15 Mbps in each direction for better performance.
What PS5 Remote Play does—and what it does not do
PS Remote Play sends video and audio from a PS5 running in your home to a compatible phone, tablet, Windows PC, Mac, Android TV device, PS4 or PS5 console, or PlayStation Portal. Your controller inputs travel back to the console, so the game is still running on the PS5 rather than on the receiving device. The official app is free; you need an existing PS5, a PlayStation account, and a usable network connection at both ends.

Remote Play is different from cloud gaming. It cannot start a game that is unavailable on your console, and it does not turn a phone into an independent PS5. The console must be online and associated with the same account used by the app. Games streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium are excluded, and titles that require PS VR, PS VR2, or other unsupported peripherals may not work.
How do I use PS5 Remote Play away from home?
Complete the console setup while you are still at home, then install and sign in to the app on the device you plan to carry. Use this order so you can discover problems while you still have physical access to the PS5.

In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
1. Enable Remote Play on the PS5
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play.
- Turn on Enable Remote Play.
- Install the latest PS5 system software if an update is offered, then restart if required.
2. Allow the console to wake from rest mode
If you want to connect while the PS5 is in rest mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network. Without these settings, a PS5 left in rest mode may not respond to a remote connection attempt.
3. Prepare the receiving device
- Install the official PS Remote Play app for your phone, tablet, Windows PC, Mac, Android TV device, or other supported platform.
- Sign in with the same PlayStation account that is used on the PS5. The app searches for consoles associated with that account.
- Connect a compatible DualSense, DualSense Edge, or DUALSHOCK 4 controller if the device and its operating-system version support it. On mobile devices, you can use the app’s touch controls instead.
- Leave the device on Wi-Fi for the first test and choose the PS5 in the app. Confirm that you can reach the console, navigate the home screen, and launch a game.
4. Test before you travel
Test from the same room as the PS5, then repeat from another room or a different network if possible. A successful nearby test confirms account and console settings, but it does not prove that a hotel, office, or cellular network will deliver low-latency play. Sony notes that a long interval since the last sign-in can prevent a device from finding the console, so reconnect before a long trip rather than leaving the setup unused for months.
How do I wake my PS5 remotely?
Put the console into rest mode rather than shutting it down completely, and leave the two rest-mode network options enabled. When you select the PS5 in the Remote Play app, the network-wake setting allows the console to power up and begin streaming. The PS5 still needs mains power and an active internet connection; Remote Play cannot wake a console that is unplugged, switched off at the wall, or disconnected from the internet.

If the app cannot find the console, first verify that the PS5 is in rest mode, the account matches, and Stay Connected to the Internet plus Enable Turning on PS5 from Network are still enabled. A system update, account sign-out, router change, or long period without signing in can require another local check.
How fast does my internet need to be for PS5 Remote Play?
Sony’s official support guidance gives two speed levels. The figures apply to both upload and download, not download alone.
| Speed | What Sony says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download | Standard or minimum baseline for Remote Play | A starting threshold, not a guarantee of smooth play |
| 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download | Recommended for best or better performance | More headroom for variation, but still dependent on latency and stability |
| UDP port 8572 | Port identified in Sony troubleshooting guidance | Relevant when diagnosing router or firewall restrictions; not a universal first step |
These recommendations come from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s support pages, whose publication dates are not shown; the pages were accessed October 13, 2026. A speed test can meet 15 Mbps while the session still stutters because of latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, congestion, carrier traffic management, or restrictive NAT. A stable connection with lower delay is generally more useful for control response than a high but inconsistent peak speed. Sony does not promise a particular resolution, frame rate, or level of playability from the speed figures.

- Feel you in-game actions and environement simulated through haptic feedback
- Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone

- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
Why upload speed matters at home
The PS5 sends the game’s video and audio out of your home, so the home connection’s upload capacity is critical. The receiving network also needs download capacity, while controller input travels in the opposite direction. If other people are uploading photos, backing up files, or streaming video, Remote Play may degrade even when a speed test taken at a quiet moment looks adequate.
When NAT causes a failure
Sony states that a NAT Type 3 network may prevent Remote Play. NAT describes how your router or carrier allows incoming and outgoing traffic. Check the NAT information shown by the PS5 and by the network you are using. If port configuration is necessary, Sony identifies UDP port 8572, but changing forwarding rules is not a universal cure and can create security or connectivity problems when done incorrectly. Ask your internet-service provider, router manufacturer, or mobile carrier for instructions if you do not understand the settings.
Can I use PS5 Remote Play on mobile data?
Yes. The app can stream over a cellular connection, but Sony warns that Remote Play uses much more data than most video-streaming services. Exceeding a plan allowance can trigger throttling or carrier charges, and some carrier networks may block or destabilize a session.

- Turn on Use Mobile Data.
- Choose an available mobile-streaming video-quality setting that fits your plan and coverage.
- Start a short session and check your carrier’s usage meter before attempting a long play period.
If the phone is already connected to Wi-Fi, the app continues using Wi-Fi when Remote Play starts. To force a cellular test, disable Wi-Fi or leave the Wi-Fi range, then confirm that mobile data permission remains enabled. There is no reliable universal hourly data figure: resolution, motion, game scene, device, compression and network conditions all change the amount transferred. Treat your carrier’s allowance as the limiting factor rather than assuming that a video-streaming estimate applies.
Which devices and controls can I use?
| Option | What you need | Control choices and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Phone or tablet | Supported Android or iOS/iPadOS device, app, account and network | Touch controls or a compatible controller; screen size and battery life can limit long sessions |
| Windows PC or Mac | Official desktop app, supported operating system, account and network | Controller support varies by operating-system version; wired networking is often easier to stabilize |
| Android TV device | Supported Android TV hardware, app and compatible controller | Useful on a television, but check the exact device and controller requirements |
| Another PS4 or PS5 | Remote Play app support and the same account | Uses the console’s display and a compatible controller |
| PlayStation Portal | An existing PS5, PlayStation account, broadband internet and at least 5 Mbps; Sony recommends 15 Mbps or more for a better experience | Dedicated handheld screen with integrated controls; optional, not required for Remote Play |
Controller compatibility is not identical across platforms. Sony’s compatibility information distinguishes Android, iOS, Mac and Windows support for DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4, and requirements can change with operating-system updates. Check the current requirement for your exact handset or computer before buying a controller. Mobile touch controls are available when a physical controller is unsupported or inconvenient, although games designed around precise analog and trigger input may feel less comfortable.

What games and features are not supported?
- Games that require PS VR or PS VR2 hardware, a camera, or another peripheral beyond the supported controller may be incompatible.
- Games that must be streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium cannot be launched through Remote Play.
- A game may technically start but perform poorly on a high-latency connection, especially one requiring precise timing, rapid camera movement, or competitive input.
- Network quality and the individual game affect results; compatibility with the console does not promise identical performance on every device or carrier.
Check the game’s control and peripheral requirements before leaving home. If a title depends on a VR headset or a specialized accessory that cannot travel with the session, select a different installed game.

How do I troubleshoot Remote Play away from home?
The app cannot find the PS5
- Confirm that the PS5 is turned on or in rest mode, not fully powered off.
- Verify that Remote Play is enabled and that both rest-mode network options are on.
- Sign out and back in with the exact PlayStation account used on the console.
- Update the PS5 and the Remote Play app, then retry the connection.
- Reconnect locally near the console if it has been a long time since the last sign-in.
The picture freezes or controls feel delayed
- Run speed tests at both ends and look beyond the headline number for latency and instability.
- Disconnect other devices using the same Wi-Fi, especially those uploading or downloading large files.
- Use a 5 GHz Wi-Fi band for the receiving device when range and router support allow it.
- On a PC or Mac, use wired Ethernet where practical.
- Move closer to the access point, pause VPNs or heavy background traffic, and test again on a less congested network.
The session fails only on one network
That pattern points to NAT, firewall or carrier behavior rather than a console setting. Check the PS5’s NAT type; Sony warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play. Try another Wi-Fi network or cellular connection. If the alternate network works, ask the administrator or carrier about restrictions before changing router rules. Use UDP port 8572 only as part of Sony’s diagnostic process, not as an automatic port-forwarding prescription.
Mobile data will not start
Recheck Mobile Data > Use Mobile Data in the app, the phone’s operating-system permission for cellular data, and your plan’s remaining allowance. A carrier may restrict the traffic or have weak coverage even when ordinary web browsing works. If Wi-Fi is active, remember that the app prefers Wi-Fi; disable it temporarily when testing cellular service.
Which away-from-home setup makes sense?
| Priority | Practical choice | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| Use equipment you already own | Phone, tablet, PC or Mac with the free app | Operating-system support, controller compatibility and a stable network |
| Play on cellular service | Phone or tablet with mobile data enabled | Plan allowance, carrier reliability, coverage and data permissions |
| Dedicated handheld controls | PlayStation Portal | Existing PS5, broadband access and at least Sony’s 5 Mbps baseline |
| Lowest setup complexity on a computer | PC or Mac on wired Ethernet where possible | Desktop app requirements and a supported controller |
The dedicated handheld does not remove the network requirement: it still streams from your PS5 and depends on broadband quality. Conversely, a phone or laptop can be sufficient if you already own one and can provide reliable Wi-Fi. Choose based on the device, controls and connection you actually have, not on the assumption that new hardware fixes latency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should I check before a trip?
- Remote Play is enabled on the PS5.
- The PS5 is updated and signed in to the account you will use remotely.
- Rest mode has both internet connection and network wake enabled.
- The app is installed, updated and tested on the receiving device.
- Your controller is charged and confirmed compatible, or touch controls are acceptable.
- A game you want to play is installed locally and does not require excluded VR or specialty hardware.
- Home upload and away download each reach at least 5 Mbps; 15 Mbps in each direction gives more headroom.
- Your away network is not known to use NAT Type 3 or block Remote Play traffic.
- Your mobile plan can absorb unusually high data use if cellular play is part of the plan.
With those checks complete, Remote Play can be a practical way to access the PS5 from another room, office or hotel. Its limits are fundamental: the home console must remain online, both networks must pass the traffic, and responsiveness varies with latency, congestion, NAT, carrier conditions and the game itself.
