A standard PS5 cannot play an original PlayStation 2 game disc. An Unsupported disc message is therefore normal for PS2 software, not proof that the optical drive is dirty or defective. The cleaning, Safe Mode and repair steps below apply only when a supported PS5/PS4 game, Blu-ray or DVD fails to read.
Can a PS5 play PS2 discs?
Sony excludes PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 format software from disc playback on PS5 consoles. This limitation applies to the ordinary retail PS5 with a disc drive; it is not changed by the console being the newer model, by using a different DVD region, or by updating the system.

The distinction that causes most confusion is that a PS5 can read several kinds of DVD media while still being unable to run a PS2 game. A PS2 game disc contains PlayStation 2 software, not merely DVD-Video content. The drive may identify the disc as optical media, but the PS5 operating system does not provide the PS2 software emulator and licensing path needed to launch it.

What the PS5 optical drive supports
The following table separates media that the drive can accept from software formats that the console can actually run.

Why an original PS2 game shows “Unsupported disc”
When the message appears immediately after inserting an original PS2 game, the most likely explanation is the documented format boundary. Repeatedly wiping the disc, rebuilding the database or buying a drive-cleaning accessory cannot convert PS2 software into a PS5-compatible format.
A PS2 title may use a DVD or, for some releases, a CD. That physical similarity is not enough. The PS5 can support DVD-Video and certain recordable DVDs while rejecting the PS2 executable, file layout and console-generation requirements on the same type of plastic disc.
Do not treat the message as evidence that the laser needs service unless other supported discs also fail. A compatibility rejection and a mechanical read fault require different responses.
Compatibility problem or actual disc-reading fault?
Use the symptom to choose the right path before attempting repairs.

Official troubleshooting for a supported PS5, PS4, Blu-ray or DVD disc
PlayStation’s support procedure says to reinsert the disc and check the result after each step. Do not use this sequence as a way to make a PS2 game work; it is for media the PS5 officially supports.

Insert the disc in the correct orientation
If the console is vertical on its stand, place the labeled side of the disc facing left as you insert it. A disc inserted upside down can look like a drive failure. Reinsert it after correcting the orientation.

Clean fingerprints and dirt safely
Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth made for Blu-ray or DVD discs. Wipe in straight strokes from the center hole toward the outer edge, rather than rubbing in circles. This can remove surface contamination; it cannot repair a deep scratch, delamination or a failed recording.
A disc-cleaning cloth is useful only for supported media. It does not enable PS2 game playback, and a cleaning accessory should not be sold or used as a promise of PS2 compatibility.

Test another supported disc
Try a known-good PS5 game, compatible PS4 game, commercial Blu-ray or supported DVD. PlayStation specifically advises testing another game, Blu-ray or DVD. Remember that burned discs and audio CDs are not valid test media because the console does not support them.
If only one disc fails, inspect it for scratches, dust, manufacturing damage or recording issues. For a recordable DVD, an unfinished session can prevent playback; Sony’s safety guide says unfinalized DVDs cannot be played.

Use Safe Mode to clear cache and rebuild the database
Turn the PS5 completely off, then press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep to enter Safe Mode. Connect the controller with a USB cable and select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Follow the on-screen instructions, then test the supported disc again.

This maintenance operation can resolve certain system indexing or cache problems. It does not install a PS2 emulator and cannot change the PS5’s supported software formats.

Consider Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) only as a last resort
PlayStation lists Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as a further option when the preceding steps fail. This is destructive: it deletes all information on the console. Back up saves and other data where possible, confirm that less destructive steps have failed, and read the current on-screen warning before proceeding.
A factory reset is not an appropriate response to an original PS2 disc being rejected. It is relevant only when supported discs consistently fail and system corruption is a plausible cause.

Contact PlayStation Repairs when supported media still fails
If multiple known-good supported discs remain unreadable after the official procedure, use PlayStation’s Repairs process. Describe which formats failed, which discs worked, the error shown and whether the issue began after a drop, liquid exposure or software change. Do not claim that a repair will add PS2 support; service addresses a hardware or system fault, not an excluded format.
Why common “fixes” do not add PS2 support
Changing the DVD region
The CFI-1115A safety guide explains that DVD region codes depend on the disc and its geographic distribution. It also says the console’s DVD region setting can be changed up to four times before it locks. This setting concerns DVD playback. It does not bypass the separate exclusion of PS2 game software, so changing regions cannot make an original PS2 title launch.
Rebuilding the database repeatedly
Database rebuilding is a legitimate Safe Mode step for supported-disc problems, but repeating it cannot supply missing PS2 software compatibility. If a supported disc works after rebuilding, the operation addressed a system issue; if a PS2 disc remains unsupported, that is the expected result.

Cleaning the drive or buying a cleaning disc
Surface dirt can interfere with a supported disc, which is why PlayStation recommends a suitable cloth. A cleaning disc, compressed air, or opening the drive cannot change the PS5 firmware’s format support. Never insert objects into the slot or use force.

Updating or resetting the console
Keep the PS5 system software current for security and supported-game compatibility, but do not expect an update or reset to turn PS2 discs into an officially supported format. Resetting erases console data and should never be used merely because a PS2 title displays an unsupported-disc message.
DVD, CD and recording limitations that look like emulation errors
Not every optical disc that fits physically is a valid PS5 test. Sony’s guide and support documentation identify several restrictions:
- Burned discs are not supported.
- Audio CDs are not supported.
- Unfinalized DVDs cannot be played.
- Scratches, dust, recording quality and the characteristics of the device used to record a disc can affect playback.
- A PS2 game released on DVD remains PS2 software, despite using DVD media; a PS2 release on CD is also outside the PS5’s supported game formats.
These limitations explain why comparing a PS2 disc with a commercial movie DVD can be misleading. The movie may be supported while the game is rejected for software-compatibility reasons.

A stuck supported disc is a mechanical issue, not an emulation setting. Do not pull the disc forcibly, insert tools through the slot or repeatedly cycle the eject mechanism while holding the disc.
PlayStation’s support instructions provide a console-model-specific manual-removal procedure and identify a #1 Phillips (cross-head) screwdriver for that process. Follow the instructions for the exact PS5 model and disconnect power as directed. If you are not comfortable removing the cover or turning the manual-release screw, use PlayStation Repairs. Removing a stuck disc will not make a PS2 game playable afterward.

PC emulation is a different setup
Search results often point to PCSX2 when someone asks how to run a PS2 disc. PCSX2 is a project for emulating PS2 games on a computer, not an official PS5 application or troubleshooting utility.
Its FAQ describes the need for a BIOS dump from an original PS2 and original games, which can be read directly from a disc or used as ISO/CSO images. Those requirements explain why PCSX2 instructions do not transfer to a stock PS5: they assume a computer operating system, emulator software, a legally obtained BIOS dump and game data. Installing PCSX2 on a PC does not alter the PS5 disc drive or make the console accept PS2 discs.
Use game images and BIOS files only in ways permitted by the laws and licenses that apply where you live. The PS5’s official support policy remains unchanged by a separate computer emulator.

Unofficial PS5 homebrew reports: what is known and what is not
On October 10, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that a homebrew port called PS5SX2 supported PS2 DVDs on jailbroken PS5 consoles and did not support PS2 games released on CD. This is secondary reporting about a changing, unofficial project, not a Sony feature.
That report does not establish that PS5SX2 will work on your model, firmware version or disc; that installation will succeed; that the project will remain available; or that Sony will provide support. It also does not turn the standard troubleshooting steps into a PS2 solution. Jailbreaking can affect system security, online access, warranty status and the risk of rendering a console unusable. Anyone considering such software should understand those consequences and verify current, lawful information independently rather than treating a dated report as a guarantee.
Because CD-based PS2 releases were reported as unsupported even in that homebrew case, the medium distinction still matters. A PS2 DVD and a PS2 CD are not interchangeable assumptions.
A quick decision guide
- Inserted an original PS2 game? Treat an unsupported-disc message as expected on a standard PS5. Do not spend money on cleaning or repairs to add compatibility.
- Inserted a PS5/compatible PS4 game, Blu-ray or DVD? Check orientation, clean it correctly and test another supported disc.
- Does another supported disc work? Investigate the original disc for dirt, scratches, an unfinished DVD session or recording-quality problems.
- Do several supported discs fail? Use Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then escalate to PlayStation Repairs if necessary.
- Considering a reset? Remember that Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes console information and is not a PS2-compatibility fix.
- Looking at PCSX2 or PS5SX2? Recognize that PCSX2 is computer emulation and PS5SX2 is an unofficial, time-sensitive homebrew report—not stock-PS5 support.
Bottom line for the “PS2 disc not reading” error
There are two separate answers. An original PS2 game disc is outside the standard PS5’s supported disc formats, so an unsupported-disc message is normal and cannot be repaired with cleaning, region changes or database rebuilding. A supported PS5/PS4 game, Blu-ray or DVD that fails should go through PlayStation’s orientation, cleaning, second-disc, Safe Mode and Repairs sequence, with destructive reset steps reserved for genuine system faults.
