For open-world games, the PlayStation 5 Pro is the better graphics-first console, while Xbox Series X is the better ecosystem and compatibility choice. Sony’s newer hardware has substantially more graphics capacity, faster memory, stronger ray tracing and PSSR upscaling. Those advantages can preserve higher image quality while maintaining 60fps in games that receive a PS5 Pro enhancement patch. Xbox Series X counters with a built-in 4K UHD Blu-ray drive, broad backward compatibility, FPS Boost, Auto HDR and a mature Xbox library.

The important qualification is game support. Neither console guarantees a universal frame-rate, resolution or loading-time win. Open-world results depend on the game engine, CPU workload, storage design and whether the developer ships a dedicated enhancement patch.

Why PS5 Pro has the graphics advantage

More GPU capacity for dense worlds

Open-world games continuously render terrain, buildings, vegetation, vehicles, weather effects, shadows and non-player characters. More graphics resources give developers room to raise detail or reduce the compromises between quality and performance modes.

Sony’s 2024 specification comparison says PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU compute units than the original PS5, 28% faster memory and up to 45% faster game rendering. Sony also states that ray tracing can run at two to three times the performance of the standard console. These are Sony’s platform-level figures, not a promise that every game will render 45% faster.

The PS5 Pro specification guide published by Sony in 2025 lists a 16.7-teraflop GPU, a 2TB SSD and an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 2 CPU. Teraflops are only one indicator of performance, but the larger GPU and faster memory are especially useful for resolution, texture detail and ray-traced effects.

PSSR can raise resolution without a conventional performance-mode penalty

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR, is Sony’s machine-learning upscaler. It reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower internal render resolution. In practical terms, a developer may target a performance-friendly internal resolution while using PSSR to produce a sharper 4K-like presentation.

Sony’s current PS5 Pro page lists more than 100 enhanced PS5 titles. At the time of Sony’s 2026 announcement, the company said PSSR was being used to improve effective resolution in more than 50 titles. Those counts can change as patches arrive, and an enhancement badge does not mean every game receives the same combination of resolution, ray tracing and frame rate.

The CPU is still important in living worlds

Open-world frame rates are not determined by the GPU alone. The CPU handles simulation tasks such as traffic, crowds, physics, artificial intelligence, streaming decisions and world-state updates. PS5 Pro keeps an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 2 CPU, so a game limited by simulation or engine scheduling may not gain a dramatic frame-rate increase even when its image quality improves.

This is why a patch can make a world look cleaner without changing its 30fps or 60fps target. Developers must optimize CPU workloads, streaming and frame pacing separately from graphics settings.

How Xbox Series X compares technically

A capable 4K-class baseline

Microsoft lists Xbox Series X with a 12.0-teraflop GPU, a 1TB NVMe SSD, a custom Zen 2 CPU and a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive. Microsoft also advertises support for 4K output at up to 120Hz. Its platform description cites more than 12 teraflops, support for up to 120 frames per second and 40 times the input/output throughput of Xbox One X.

Those specifications make Series X a powerful open-world machine. It can deliver high-resolution modes, fast loading and 60fps options when the developer exposes them. The difference is that PS5 Pro has more headroom for demanding effects, while Series X remains closer to the original current-generation performance target.

Up-to-120fps is a ceiling, not a standard setting

Both consoles can output a 120Hz signal, but a game must include a 120fps mode and maintain the required frame pacing. Large open worlds often prioritize visual distance, lighting and simulation over very high frame rates. A 120Hz television therefore does not turn a 30fps or 60fps game into a 120fps game.

Image quality, ray tracing and frame-rate modes

What PS5 Pro can combine

Sony says compatible games can run at 60fps, or up to 120fps, with ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K resolution using PSSR at the same time. The word “compatible” is decisive: this is a developer-supported target, not a universal console mode.

A PS5 Pro patch may combine features that were separated on the base console. For example, a standard PS5 version might offer a 30fps quality mode with ray tracing and a 60fps performance mode with reduced effects. A Pro version can sometimes retain more of the quality-mode lighting while approaching the performance-mode frame rate. The exact result varies by title.

What Series X can deliver

Xbox Series X supports up to 120fps where a game provides that mode and has hardware-accelerated DirectX ray tracing. Developers still choose the internal resolution, ray-tracing quality, foliage density, crowd simulation and frame-rate target. Some titles offer a 30fps quality mode and a 60fps performance mode; others use dynamic resolution to hold a target frame rate.

Dynamic resolution and patch labels matter

“4K” in a console menu can describe output resolution rather than a native 4K internal render. Dynamic-resolution games change their internal resolution as the scene becomes more demanding. PSSR can make a lower internal resolution appear sharper, but it cannot restore every detail that was never rendered.

Before buying for one particular game, check whether the developer lists a PS5 Pro enhancement, PSSR support, a ray-tracing upgrade or a specific 60fps mode. A generic “runs on PS5 Pro” statement is not the same as a documented visual upgrade.

Open-world loading, streaming and storage

Both consoles use fast solid-state storage and can stream large worlds much faster than their previous-generation counterparts. However, loading-time differences are game-specific. Asset compression, shader compilation, traversal design and patch quality can matter as much as raw storage bandwidth.

PS5 Pro includes a 2TB SSD, giving it more usable room for large installs before expansion is needed. Xbox Series X includes a 1TB NVMe SSD. Modern open-world releases can occupy well over 100GB, so the difference may determine how many large games you keep installed.

Xbox Series X also accepts an Xbox Storage Expansion Card for additional high-speed game storage. PS5 Pro supports compatible M.2 SSD expansion, but the drive must meet Sony’s required performance and physical specifications.

Discs, downloads and ownership

Xbox Series X includes a disc drive

The Series X 4K UHD Blu-ray drive can read supported game discs, Blu-ray movies and UHD Blu-ray movies. Compatible backward-compatible games can be installed from a disc, although many titles still require patches and some content remains download-only.

PS5 Pro uses an optional disc drive

PS5 Pro’s 2TB storage is a strength, but the console does not include a disc drive in its standard configuration. If you own PS5 or PS4 discs, budget for Sony’s separately sold compatible disc-drive add-on and check regional availability. Digital ownership works without that accessory.

This distinction matters for buyers who trade games, collect physical editions, buy used discs or have unreliable broadband. A disc does not eliminate downloads, but it can preserve access to a physical license and reduce the need to repurchase a digital copy.

Libraries and backward compatibility

Xbox Series X supports select Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games through Microsoft’s backward-compatibility program. Microsoft describes the feature as free for games you already own, with FPS Boost and Auto HDR available on supported titles. FPS Boost can raise the frame rate of an older game without a new-generation remake; Auto HDR can expand the image’s highlight and color range on compatible displays.

Compatibility is not universal. A game must be included in Microsoft’s supported catalog, and enhancement features vary by title. Disc-based backward compatibility also depends on having the Series X drive.

PS5 Pro plays the PS5 catalog and supports PS4 games through the PS5 platform, but its principal advantage is enhancement of current-generation titles rather than a comparable library of original Xbox and Xbox 360 software. For someone moving from an existing Xbox library, Series X can provide more value than a higher peak graphics specification.

Game-specific examples

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is a documented PS5 Pro example. Its Pro support includes PSSR and more advanced ray-traced lighting, shadows and reflections. That makes it a useful illustration of the hardware’s purpose: a supported patch can improve both image reconstruction and expensive lighting effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The example should not be generalized to every open-world game. Unpatched games cannot automatically use PSSR or Pro-specific ray-tracing settings, and a patch can target visual quality, frame rate or both.

GTA VI

Rockstar’s official GTA VI page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It does not publish a PS5 Pro-specific mode, resolution target or frame-rate target. Therefore, no honest buying recommendation can promise that GTA VI will run at 60fps, use PSSR or receive a special Pro preset.

PS5 Pro may offer a visual advantage if Rockstar implements and documents one. Until that happens, choose between the consoles based on the broader hardware, library, storage and disc differences rather than an assumed GTA VI performance mode.

Is PS5 Pro worth it for open-world games?

PS5 Pro is worth considering when image quality is your priority and you regularly play titles with official Pro patches. It is particularly persuasive if you have a 4K television, sit close enough to see fine detail, value ray-traced lighting and want more internal storage.

The case is weaker when most of your games are unpatched, your display is 1080p, or your favorite titles are primarily CPU-limited. In those situations, the extra GPU capacity may produce little visible benefit beyond steadier performance in selected games.

When Xbox Series X is the better purchase

  • You own a large Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox collection.
  • You want a built-in 4K UHD Blu-ray drive for games or movies.
  • You buy and resell physical games or rely on used discs.
  • You value FPS Boost and Auto HDR on supported older titles.
  • You want a capable 4K/120Hz console without paying for a graphics-focused upgrade.
  • Your open-world priorities are broad library access and ecosystem continuity rather than maximum ray-traced image quality.

Choosing for your display and play style

Your situation More suitable console Reason
4K 120Hz television and a graphics-first preference PS5 Pro Its extra GPU headroom and PSSR are designed to preserve detail at higher frame-rate targets in supported games.
1080p television Either, usually Xbox Series X for value The visible benefit of Pro-specific resolution improvements is reduced at 1080p.
Large physical game collection Xbox Series X The disc drive is included and supports selected backward-compatible titles.
Many large current-generation installs PS5 Pro The included 2TB SSD provides more built-in capacity.
One specific unpatched open-world game Whichever platform your friends and library use Without a patch, PS5 Pro’s specialized features may not apply.

Setup checklist for the best result

  1. Use a 4K display that supports the refresh rate you actually want. A 4K 120Hz HDMI 2.1 television is the relevant category for games offering 4K output at high refresh rates.
  2. Enable the console’s automatic HDR and resolution settings, then verify that the television is using its HDMI 2.1 enhanced mode where required.
  3. Install the latest system software and every game patch before judging image quality or frame rate.
  4. Open the game’s graphics menu and select its Pro-enhanced, ray-tracing or performance option when available. Do not assume the highest preset is automatically the smoothest.
  5. Leave adequate free SSD space. Very full drives and unfinished installations can complicate updates and shader compilation.
  6. Use the game’s own performance readout, if available, rather than assuming a 120Hz signal means 120fps.

Common buying mistakes

  • Comparing teraflops as if they were frame-rate guarantees. Architecture, memory bandwidth, engine design and patches determine the result.
  • Assuming every PS5 game receives a Pro upgrade. The strongest benefits require developer support.
  • Confusing output resolution with native rendering. Dynamic resolution and upscaling are common in demanding open worlds.
  • Expecting the CPU upgrade that is not there. PS5 Pro’s CPU remains an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 2 design, so simulation-heavy games can remain CPU-limited.
  • Buying a 120Hz television solely for a 120fps promise. The game must include a suitable mode and sustain it.
  • Ignoring physical-media needs. PS5 Pro’s optional drive changes the total cost and ownership experience for disc collectors.
  • Using GTA VI as a guaranteed specification test. Rockstar has not announced a PS5 Pro mode, resolution or frame-rate target.

Final verdict

Choose PlayStation 5 Pro if your priority is the cleanest, most detailed presentation in supported open-world games. Its 67% increase in GPU compute units, 28% faster memory, up to 45% faster rendering claim, two-to-three-times ray-tracing claim and PSSR give developers more room to combine visual quality with 60fps targets.

Choose Xbox Series X if compatibility, discs and the Xbox library matter more than maximum graphics headroom. Its 12-teraflop-class GPU, 1TB NVMe SSD, 4K UHD Blu-ray drive, up-to-120fps support and backward compatibility make it the more complete ecosystem purchase.

For any single open-world game, verify the developer’s patch notes and graphics modes before buying. Hardware capability matters, but the game’s code ultimately decides what you see and how smoothly it runs.
