Buy the standard PS5 if your main goal is playing GTA VI. Both the PS5 and PS5 Pro are officially listed for the game’s November 19, 2026 release, and Sony has not published a GTA VI-specific resolution, frame-rate target, or graphics-mode comparison that justifies paying extra for the Pro. The PS5 Pro is the better choice only when you also want its stronger hardware for other supported games, have a premium display, and accept a substantial price premium before the game’s actual Pro benefits are documented.
At Sony’s US recommended prices effective April 2, 2026, the disc PS5 costs $649.99, the PS5 Digital Edition costs $599.99, and the PS5 Pro costs $899.99. That makes the Pro $250 more than the disc model and $300 more than the Digital Edition. Regional prices and real-world retailer prices vary.

Both consoles will play GTA VI
PlayStation’s official GTA VI page lists PS5 and PS5 Pro as launch platforms, with release scheduled for November 19, 2026. Rockstar’s platform and editions information likewise names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game will not be available on PS4.

That means a regular PS5 is not a cut-down access option. It is an officially supported platform with the features Sony has described for the game: DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, the controller speaker, Tempest 3D AudioTech, and loading from the console’s high-speed SSD.
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Sony’s PlayStation Blog says GTA VI will “play best on PS5” through its use of those features. That is Sony promotional language, not an independent test comparing the two PlayStation models. It confirms the standard console is part of the intended experience; it does not prove that the base PS5 outperforms the Pro.
There is also no indication that the standard PS5 will receive a reduced map, fewer missions, or a separate online service. Both systems are in the same PlayStation generation, and the announced platform list is the same. The practical difference is how much rendering headroom each console may have, not whether one can launch the game at all.
What PS5 Pro Enhanced tells you—and what it does not
The PlayStation Store identifies GTA VI as PS5 Pro Enhanced. This is useful confirmation that the developer has designated the game for Pro-specific support, but it is not a technical specification. In the official material currently available, Sony and Rockstar do not state the Pro resolution, frame-rate cap, ray-tracing configuration, graphics modes, or measured image-quality improvement for GTA VI.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSony’s PS5 Pro announcement says the console has 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the current PS5, with up to 45% faster rendering. Those are manufacturer platform claims, not a GTA VI benchmark. Sony also cautions that Pro features are available only in selected enhanced games and that the features vary by title.
The wording matters. “Up to 45% faster rendering” describes a maximum platform claim under Sony’s stated conditions; it is not a promise that every scene in GTA VI will render 45% faster. Likewise, more compute units and faster memory can give a developer additional options, but they do not reveal whether Rockstar will spend that headroom on resolution, effects, steadier frame delivery, longer-distance detail, or another trade-off.
Therefore, “PS5 Pro Enhanced” supports a conditional expectation: GTA VI may use the Pro’s extra resources in ways the standard PS5 cannot. It does not support claims that the game will run at 60 frames per second, deliver native 4K, eliminate a quality/performance choice, or provide a particular ray-tracing mode. No official game-specific figure establishes any of those outcomes.
PS5 and PS5 Pro compared
| Decision factor | Standard PS5 | PS5 Pro | What it means for GTA VI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform eligibility | Officially listed | Officially listed | Both are eligible for the announced release. |
| US recommended price, effective April 2, 2026 | $649.99 disc model; $599.99 Digital Edition | $899.99 | The Pro premium is $250 over the disc PS5 or $300 over the Digital Edition. |
| GPU and memory | Current PS5 baseline | Sony reports 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory | Stronger hardware, but no published GTA VI performance result. |
| Rendering claim | Not applicable | Sony claims up to 45% faster rendering | A platform maximum, not a guaranteed GTA VI uplift. |
| Game-specific support | Runs the standard PS5 version | GTA VI is labeled PS5 Pro Enhanced | Pro details remain unspecified in official sources. |
| Disc drive | Depends on the model you buy | Sold without a built-in drive; Sony offers a separately sold drive option | Choose based on your wider game and media library, not the GTA VI physical box. |
| Backward compatibility | PS5 compatibility features | PS5 games plus Game Boost for more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games, according to Sony | Useful for your broader library; unrelated to GTA VI’s rendering mode. |
| Accessories | Uses PS5 accessories | PS5 accessories are compatible | You do not need a new controller or headset solely for the Pro. |
What Sony’s hardware claims mean in practice
The Pro’s 67% increase in GPU compute units and 28% faster memory are meaningful specifications, but they describe capacity rather than a guaranteed visual result. A game has to be specifically optimized to use that capacity, and the developer decides which effects or modes to expose. Two Pro-enhanced games can therefore look or perform differently.
Recommended Free Tools
The same caution applies to Game Boost. Sony says the feature covers more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. That is useful if your existing library matters, but it does not tell you how GTA VI, a native PS5 release, will behave. Do not use the backward-compatibility number as a proxy for a GTA VI frame-rate claim.
The Pro can also be a better long-term purchase for people who routinely buy enhanced releases. If you expect to keep one console for several years, the extra hardware may have value across many titles. If GTA VI is your only reason to upgrade, however, the game-specific information needed to justify that premium has not been published.
Current prices by market
Sony’s price announcement lists the following recommended retail prices from April 2, 2026:
| Market | PS5 | PS5 Digital Edition | PS5 Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $649.99 | $599.99 | $899.99 |
| United Kingdom | £569.99 | £519.99 | £789.99 |
| Europe | €649.99 | €599.99 | €899.99 |
| Japan | ¥97,980 | ¥89,980 | ¥137,980 |
These are recommended prices, not guarantees of stock or the amount a retailer will charge. Sony’s US site currently lists PS5 Pro starting at $899.99. Check your local PlayStation store and retailers for taxes, bundles, discounts, and availability.

A buyer who wants a Pro with physical-media support must add Sony’s separately sold disc drive. A buyer choosing a Digital Edition may later pay for an add-on drive as well, so compare the complete setup rather than only the headline console prices.
The game itself is a separate purchase. PlayStation’s US listing gives the Standard Edition at $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition at $99.99. Those prices can change, and any pre-order bonus or redemption deadline should be checked on the live store page. The console premium does not include either edition of the game.
Disc, digital, and the GTA VI physical edition
The physical box does not contain a game disc
Rockstar Support says the physical GTA VI Standard Edition box contains a digital download code and no disc. The physical edition is expected to be available from November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading, subject to the retailer’s local terms. The code is restricted by the region of the platform account used to redeem it.
As a result, you do not need a disc drive specifically to use that physical-box edition. A disc drive still matters if you buy other games on Blu-ray, borrow or resell physical games, or use the console for movie discs. The standard PS5 disc model includes that capability; the PS5 Digital Edition does not; and the PS5 Pro requires the separately sold drive option.
Be especially careful with imports. A boxed code purchased in one market may not redeem on an account registered in another region. Confirm the retailer’s region wording and your account country before ordering. This is a code-redemption issue, not a difference in GTA VI’s gameplay between consoles.
Choose the edition around your whole library
- Choose a disc PS5 if you expect to buy used games, trade games, lend them, or play disc-based media.
- Choose the Digital Edition if your purchases are downloaded and you want the lowest listed console price.
- Choose the Pro only after adding the cost of its optional drive if you need physical media; its $899.99 US price does not include that accessory.
The physical GTA VI packaging therefore should not decide the console SKU by itself. Think about every other game you plan to buy, whether you share titles with family, and whether a disc drive is useful for films. The code in the GTA VI box will download the game on an eligible account regardless of which of these PlayStation 5 models you choose.
What you experience on the regular PS5
Sony and Rockstar have specifically described the standard PS5 features GTA VI will use. The DualSense controller can provide haptics and adaptive-trigger resistance, while its speaker can deliver localized effects. Tempest 3D AudioTech is designed to place sounds around the player when used with compatible audio equipment. The SSD is responsible for the fast storage and loading behavior associated with the PS5 platform.
Those features are not Pro-exclusive. Buying the Pro does not unlock a different controller technology or a separate audio system for GTA VI. You can use PS5 accessories with the Pro, and PS5 games are playable on it, so the choice is primarily about rendering headroom and your broader hardware priorities.

You also do not need to purchase an extra DualSense controller just to play. Sony’s feature descriptions explain what the included controller can do; an additional controller is an optional cost for local multiplayer or a spare, not a requirement created by GTA VI or by the Pro.
Will GTA VI run at 60 fps on PS5 Pro?
No official source reviewed for this comparison supplies a GTA VI-specific frame-rate number. The Pro-enhanced label and Sony’s general hardware claims are insufficient to conclude that 60 fps will be available, whether in every mode or at every resolution. The same uncertainty applies to native 4K, upscaling methods, ray tracing, and any quality-versus-performance menu.
Until Rockstar or Sony publishes those details, treat any precise online claim as speculation. A later patch, post-launch update, or technical presentation could define the modes, but that information is not part of the current platform announcement. If a guaranteed frame-rate target is essential to your purchase, wait for an official specification or independent testing rather than paying the Pro premium on an assumption.
Who should buy the standard PS5?
You are buying a console primarily for GTA VI
The standard PS5 gives you official platform access for $250 less than the Pro’s US recommended price if you choose the disc model, or $300 less than the Digital Edition comparison if you choose the lower-priced digital console. The game’s announced controller, audio, and SSD features are available on the base machine, and there is no published GTA VI benchmark showing that the Pro is required.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You want the strongest value for a mixed library
If most of your play time will be GTA VI and other games that do not need Pro-specific features, direct the saved money toward games, storage, a display, or the disc capability you actually use. Sony’s Pro enhancements are title-dependent, so a higher console price does not automatically improve every PS5 game in the same way.
You prefer physical games or movies
The disc PS5 avoids the extra drive purchase associated with the Pro. This is especially relevant when you buy second-hand, share games with family, or keep a physical collection. Remember that the GTA VI box itself is a download code; the disc decision is about your other media.
You are replacing an older console now
If you need a working console before GTA VI arrives, the standard PS5 is the lower-risk purchase because its platform status is confirmed and its price is lower. You can play other PS5 releases immediately instead of paying today for technical details that may not arrive until launch. Waiting only makes sense if you can comfortably remain without a console or expect a substantial price or bundle change.

You play many supported enhanced games
The Pro’s value grows when you regularly play several titles that have meaningful Pro modes, not just one forthcoming game. Sony’s hardware uplift can benefit supported software, and the company says Game Boost applies to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. That figure describes the feature’s library, not GTA VI’s performance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You have a display that reveals image-quality differences
A large, high-resolution television or monitor, a short viewing distance, and a preference for image quality can make enhanced rendering more valuable to you. This is a personal display decision rather than a GTA VI specification. If you play on a smaller or older screen, the visible return on the extra hardware may be less important than the price difference.
You accept uncertainty and plan to keep the console for years
The Pro is a forward-looking purchase: you pay for stronger hardware now while the exact GTA VI modes are unknown. It makes sense when you would keep the console through other future enhanced releases and are comfortable with the possibility that GTA VI’s eventual advantage is modest, mode-specific, or visible only in particular scenes.
You want the highest-end PlayStation option
Some buyers value having Sony’s most capable current console regardless of one game’s measured result. That is a legitimate preference, but it is different from needing the Pro for access. Keep the distinction clear: the Pro is the premium hardware choice, while the standard PS5 is the value choice for playing GTA VI.
A practical buying decision
- Set your total budget. Start with the console price for your region, then add the game, any optional disc drive, extra storage, a display upgrade, and tax. Use Sony’s April 2, 2026 figures as price anchors rather than assuming a retailer’s bundle is permanent.
- Decide whether you need physical media. Select the disc PS5 if you need built-in disc support. Select the Digital Edition for an all-download library. Select the Pro only after including its separate drive option if required.
- List the games you will actually play. Count current and planned titles with confirmed Pro enhancements. Do not count an unannounced mode or convert Sony’s “up to 45% faster rendering” statement into a guaranteed result for a specific game.
- Assess your display and play style. Note your screen resolution, size, viewing distance, and whether you prioritize image detail, a high frame rate, or the lowest cost. GTA VI’s official Pro mode details are not yet available, so this step cannot produce a guaranteed mode recommendation.
- Check the live offer before paying. Confirm the retailer’s model, included accessories, warranty, region, stock, and return policy. Prices and bundles can change, and the physical GTA VI code must match your account region.
- Revisit the decision when technical details arrive. If you are not purchasing another game soon, waiting for Rockstar or Sony to publish GTA VI’s Pro modes or for independent launch testing removes the largest unknown in the comparison.
Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “Pro Enhanced” means 60 fps. It confirms support, not a frame-rate promise.
- Comparing only the console sticker prices. Include the Pro’s optional drive, the game, tax, storage, and any display upgrade.
- Buying an imported physical code without checking your account region. Rockstar says redemption is subject to platform-account region restrictions.
- Assuming every PS5 game gets the same uplift. Sony explicitly says enhanced features vary by title.
- Treating a promotional statement as a benchmark. “GTA VI will play best on PS5” is Sony’s marketing language, not a measured PS5-versus-Pro test.
- Paying for a drive you will never use. The GTA VI physical box contains a download code, so choose a disc model for your broader media habits.
Bottom line for GTA VI buyers
For access to GTA VI alone, buy the standard PS5 that matches your media preference. It is an official launch platform and includes the PS5 features Sony has highlighted for the game. Choose the PS5 Pro when its broader benefits—stronger hardware, supported enhancements across your library, and the potential value of a premium display—justify paying $250 to $300 more in the United States before GTA VI’s exact Pro performance is known.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I buy a PS5 or PS5 Pro for GTA VI?
Buy the standard PS5 if GTA VI is the main reason for your purchase. Buy the Pro if you also want its stronger hardware for multiple supported games and are comfortable paying the premium without a published GTA VI benchmark.
Will GTA VI run on the regular PS5?
Yes. PlayStation and Rockstar list PlayStation 5 as an official platform for the November 19, 2026 release. PS5 features including DualSense functions, Tempest 3D AudioTech, and SSD loading are supported.
Is GTA VI PS5 Pro Enhanced?
Yes. The PlayStation Store labels GTA VI as PS5 Pro Enhanced. Sony and Rockstar have not yet specified the exact resolution, frame rate, ray-tracing setup, or graphics modes behind that label.
Will PS5 Pro run GTA VI at 60 fps?
There is no official GTA VI-specific frame-rate figure in the currently published material. Do not assume 60 fps, native 4K, or a particular performance mode until Sony or Rockstar provides those details or testing verifies them.
Does the GTA VI physical edition require a disc-drive PS5?
No. Rockstar says the physical Standard Edition box contains a digital download code rather than a disc. A disc drive is still useful for other physical games and movies.
How much more does PS5 Pro cost?
At Sony’s US recommended prices effective April 2, 2026, the Pro is $899.99, compared with $649.99 for the disc PS5 and $599.99 for the Digital Edition. That is a $250 or $300 difference before accessories and tax.
Can I use my PS5 accessories with PS5 Pro?
Sony says PS5 accessories are compatible with the Pro, so you do not need a new DualSense controller or headset solely because you choose the upgraded console.
Should I wait to buy until GTA VI performance details are announced?
Waiting is sensible if GTA VI is your only reason to choose the Pro and you do not need a console immediately. An official mode announcement or independent launch testing would resolve the largest uncertainty.
The Bottom Line
Verdict: choose the standard PS5 for the best GTA VI value; choose PS5 Pro for broader, premium use across supported games—not because a specific GTA VI frame rate or resolution has been promised.
