PlayStation 5 Pro is sold as a disc-free console. You can add Sony’s compatible detachable PS5 Disc Drive separately, but the drive must be paired with the console online during setup. The Pro includes a 2 TB custom SSD (with less space available to games and apps), accepts a compatible PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe M.2 SSD from 250 GB to 8 TB, and works with PS5 accessories and supported PS4 games. The exact box contents depend on region, so check the current local listing before buying.
Does the PS5 Pro have a disc drive?
No. The standard PS5 Pro package is a disc-less console. There is no optical drive in the box, so you cannot insert a game, Blu-ray, or DVD until you add the optional drive.

Sony sells a removable Disc Drive for PS5 that is designed for PS5 Pro and specified PS5 Slim models. It is a separate purchase, and the normal PS5 Pro bundle does not include it. Availability and pricing vary by market and can change, so check the current Sony or retailer listing for your region.
Can you add a disc drive to the PS5 Pro?
Yes. The compatible detachable drive attaches to the PS5 Pro’s exterior drive bay. Sony requires an internet connection to pair the drive with the console during initial setup. After pairing, the drive provides the physical-media functions expected from a disc-equipped PS5.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Games you can play from the optional drive
- Physical PS5 game discs that the console supports.
- Supported physical PS4 game discs.
“Supported” matters: compatibility is not a promise that every PS4 title or every regional disc will behave identically. Check the game publisher’s and Sony’s compatibility information for a particular title if it is important to you.
Movies and other optical media
The drive also plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs. Game-disc compatibility and movie playback are separate considerations: buying the drive can make the Pro a physical-game and disc-movie player, but digital games do not require the drive.
Should you buy the drive?
| Choose the disc drive if… | A disc-free setup may suit you if… |
|---|---|
| You own physical PS5 or supported PS4 games. | Your library is entirely digital. |
| You buy, borrow, trade, or resell physical games. | You download games and do not use optical movies. |
| You want 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, or DVD playback. | You stream movies or use another disc player. |
| You can complete the required online pairing during setup. | You prefer not to add a separate accessory or depend on its local availability. |
The sources establish these functional differences, but not a current universal price. Compare the drive’s local price and stock with the value of the physical games and discs you expect to use.

Sony specifies a 2 TB custom SSD built into PS5 Pro. That is the advertised raw capacity, not the amount you can fill with games. The console reserves part of its storage for system administration, maintenance, and additional options, so the free space shown after setup is lower and can vary with system software.

The built-in SSD is suitable for a large digital library, but modern PS5 games can occupy substantial space. If you regularly keep many large installations, an expansion drive avoids repeatedly deleting and redownloading them.
What SSD works with PS5 Pro?
PS5 Pro has an M.2 expansion connector. Sony’s requirements are:
| Requirement | What Sony specifies |
|---|---|
| Interface | PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, Key M |
| Capacity | 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum |
| Supported module sizes | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 |
| Drive type not supported | M.2 SATA |
| Thermal solution | A heatsink or other cooling solution that stays within Sony’s physical limits for the drive and heatsink |
Do not select an SSD solely because its capacity or marketing name looks suitable. Check the manufacturer’s physical dimensions, including the heatsink, against Sony’s current M.2 installation instructions. Sony also warns that it cannot guarantee every drive that appears to meet the headline specifications will work.

Can you use an M.2 SSD from an existing PS5?
In many cases, yes. Sony’s setup guidance says an M.2 SSD already installed in a PS5 can be inserted into PS5 Pro by following the current installation guide. Treat the move as a hardware procedure rather than a simple plug-and-play assumption: shut down correctly, remove the covers as directed, transfer the module without damaging its mounting screw or heatsink, and let the Pro format or otherwise prepare the drive if prompted. Back up important saves and verify the exact console and drive instructions before moving hardware.

Installing an expansion SSD safely
- Confirm that the module is PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, Key M, between 250 GB and 8 TB, and one of Sony’s supported lengths.
- Verify that the complete drive-and-heatsink assembly fits Sony’s published width, length, and thickness limits. M.2 SATA drives are not compatible.
- Turn the console off fully, disconnect the power and cables, and allow it to cool before opening the expansion bay.
- Follow Sony’s current PS5 Pro M.2 installation guide for cover removal, screw placement, and heatsink orientation; do not force the module into the connector.
- Reconnect the console and start it. If the system asks to format the new M.2 storage, understand that formatting erases data on that drive before accepting.
- Use the storage settings to move or install games on the M.2 drive and leave enough free space for system operation.
Are PS4 games compatible with PS5 Pro?
PS5 Pro is compatible with PS4 games, but the exact method depends on whether you own a digital license or a physical disc. Digital PS4 purchases associated with your account can be downloaded when supported. Physical PS4 games require the optional Disc Drive, because a disc-free Pro cannot read the license disc.
Compatibility does not mean every game receives a Pro-specific upgrade. Sony says enhancements vary by title. A compatible game may offer sharper output, improved image quality, higher frame rates, ray-tracing features, or other developer-selected improvements; another game may run without a special Pro mode.
What does PS5 Pro improve in compatible games?
Sony describes compatible games running at 60 frames per second or up to 120 frames per second with 4K output and ray tracing using PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Those are capabilities for supported software, not a guarantee that every game simultaneously reaches every maximum.
Game developers decide which enhancements to implement. Before buying a game for a specific feature, check its current PS5 Pro enhancement information rather than assuming that the console’s hardware alone enables a particular mode.

Do PS5 accessories work with PS5 Pro?
Sony lists PS5 Pro compatibility with several major PS5 accessories, including:
- PlayStation VR2
- PlayStation Portal
- DualSense Edge wireless controller
- Access controller
- PULSE Elite wireless headset
- PULSE Explore wireless earbuds
For physical console accessories, Sony identifies the horizontal stand feet, the vertical stand, and the compatible Disc Drive cover as usable with PS5 Pro. It separately lists PS5 covers from the CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 model groups, and the PS5 console base, as incompatible. Do not assume that an older cover or base fits merely because it was made for a PS5; check the model group and accessory listing.
What are PS5 Pro’s resolution and capture limits?
Sony’s compatibility information lists feature ceilings for applicable content: select games can support up to 8K output, media apps up to 4K, screenshots up to 8K, gameplay clips up to 4K, and Media Gallery content up to 8K. These are maximums for supported games, apps, and capture modes, not a promise that every title or service operates at those settings.
What comes in the PS5 Pro box?
Sony’s UK product listing identifies the following standard package contents:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- PS5 Pro console
- DualSense wireless controller
- 2 TB SSD installed in the console
- Horizontal stand feet
- HDMI cable
- AC power cord
- User manual
- Astro’s Playroom pre-installed
Sony’s setup article also confirms that Astro’s Playroom is pre-installed and that a DualSense controller is included. The separately sold Disc Drive is not part of this standard package. Box contents can differ by country, retailer bundle, or later package revision, so use the current local Sony or retailer listing as the final authority.
PS5 Pro setup checklist
- Check the console model and regional package listing before opening the box.
- Decide whether your library requires the optional Disc Drive. If it does, obtain the compatible drive and plan for an internet connection during pairing.
- Connect the console with the included HDMI cable and AC power cord, then complete system setup and updates.
- Sign in to the account that owns your digital PS5 and PS4 licenses.
- If transferring an M.2 SSD from another PS5, follow Sony’s current hardware guide and back up important data first.
- Install only games whose PS5 Pro enhancements are documented by the developer or Sony; do not infer an upgrade from the console’s general specifications.
Common problems and fixes
The drive is attached but discs are not recognized
Confirm that it is the model intended for PS5 Pro, that it is seated correctly, and that the console completed the required online pairing. Check for system updates and retry setup with a working internet connection. If a particular game disc still fails, verify whether that PS4 title is supported and whether the disc’s region or condition is an issue.
The available storage is less than 2 TB
This is expected. Sony reserves part of the advertised capacity for system administration, maintenance, and additional options. The user-available figure can change with system software.
The M.2 SSD will not install or format
Recheck the interface, capacity, supported length, and complete heatsink dimensions. An M.2 SATA module is not supported. A drive can meet the headline specifications and still fall outside Sony’s physical limits or compatibility guarantee, so consult the current installation instructions and the drive manufacturer before replacing it.
A PS5 accessory or cover does not fit
Use Sony’s compatibility list rather than relying on appearance. The listed stand feet, vertical stand, and Disc Drive cover are compatible; PS5 covers from the CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 groups and the PS5 console base are listed as incompatible with PS5 Pro.
