Add Sony’s compatible Disc Drive if you own physical PS5 games, supported PS4 game discs, or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, or DVD movies. The drive is sold separately, costs extra, and must be paired with the console over the internet during setup.
This is not a choice between two factory PS5 Pro editions. PS5 Pro is sold without an internal drive; the practical decision is whether to buy the console alone or add the removable accessory later.

What “Digital Edition vs. Disc Drive” actually means
Sony introduced PS5 Pro in September 2024 as a disc-less console with an optional, separately sold Disc Drive. Hideaki Nishino, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s CEO, described it this way: "PS5 Pro is available as a disc-less console, with the option to purchase the currently available Disc Drive for PS5 separately."

That wording matters when you compare prices and compatibility. There is no PS5 Pro package with a built-in optical drive to weigh against a second, lower-priced Pro package. Every PS5 Pro starts as the digital, 2TB console. You then decide whether your system will remain download-only or whether to attach the compatible drive.
#1 Best Overall
- From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this device.
- This product is only for PS5 Digital Edition consoles (CFI-2000 model group – slim) or PS5 Pro Consoles
- Drive will play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs
- Internet connection is required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 Digital Edition Console upon setup.
Digital-only play means obtaining games through the PlayStation Store. Adding the drive gives the same console a physical-game and optical-movie option, but it does not turn every PS4 title into a compatible game. Sony describes the library as supported PS5 games and a vast back catalogue of supported PS4 titles, with a small number of PS4 games excluded from PS5 Pro compatibility.

Questions to settle before ordering
How many physical games do you actually plan to use?
Start with the discs you own or expect to keep using, not with a vague possibility that you might buy one physical game someday. List the PS5 discs on your shelf, then identify the PS4 discs you want to carry forward. Check the individual PS4 titles against Sony’s compatibility information because “supported” is not the same as universal compatibility. If that list is empty, the drive has no immediate game-media purpose.
Will the Pro replace a disc player?
The drive is also a movie feature. Sony lists 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback. If your household already relies on a separate player, this may not matter. If the Pro is intended to replace that player, include movie discs in the decision rather than considering games alone. The disc-less console has no optical movie function by itself.
Can you complete online setup?
The drive is removable hardware, but installation is not entirely offline. Sony requires an internet connection to pair the drive and PS5 Pro during setup. Arrange the installation where the console can connect to the internet, and do not assume that attaching the drive alone makes it ready. Once pairing is complete, follow the console’s prompts for inserting supported media.
Are the model and cover details clear?
Look for a PS5 Pro-compatible accessory and the CFI-ZDD1 model designation identified on Sony’s UK product page. Sony lists the drive for PS5 Pro and for slim PS5 Digital Edition model groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100. That does not establish compatibility with older Digital Edition model groups. Cover sets made for CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 PS5 model groups are not compatible with Pro, so a generic listing that merely says “PS5 cover” is not sufficient.
When the disc-less PS5 Pro is the better choice
You will buy every game digitally
If your purchases already come from the PlayStation Store and you do not expect to switch to disc versions, the standalone console performs the role you need without an additional accessory. You avoid installing hardware and do not pay for a capability you will leave unused.
This choice is clearest for someone starting a new digital library rather than carrying a collection of boxed games from an earlier console. It is also appropriate when your movie viewing is handled by streaming services or another player and you have no reason to use 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, or DVD discs.

Keeping the Pro disc-less means one console purchase, no drive attachment, and no model-specific cover to check. There is also no optical mechanism to accommodate in your cabinet. The trade-off is permanent: a disc-less console cannot read a game or movie disc unless you later obtain and install the compatible drive.
You are comfortable checking digital availability
A digital-only buyer should confirm that the games they intend to play are available for download in their account region and that the console has enough storage for the planned library. PS5 Pro is described by Sony as a 2TB console, but the usable space available to games is lower than the advertised capacity because system software occupies part of it. The decision here is about media format, not a different graphics or processing specification.
You do not want to plan around accessory stock
Because the drive is a separate product, its price and availability can differ from the console’s. A buyer who has no current disc requirement can purchase the Pro alone and avoid making the console decision depend on accessory stock. If your need for discs is definite, however, check that the compatible drive is available in your market before finalizing the console purchase.
When adding the Disc Drive is worth it
You already own physical PS5 games
Physical PS5 games are the strongest reason to add the accessory. Instead of replacing those discs with digital purchases, you can continue using supported titles in the Pro. The drive does not make the console a different Pro model; it adds the optical hardware needed to read the discs you already own.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You have supported PS4 game discs
The drive also reads supported PS4 game discs. “Supported” is important: Sony does not promise that every PS4 game works on PS5 Pro, and its product material identifies a small number of PS4 games that are not compatible. Check each title before assuming that a disc from an older console will run.
You use physical movie media
Sony lists 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback for the compatible drive. If the Pro will replace a separate disc player, this capability may justify the accessory even when most of your games are digital. The disc-less console alone has no optical movie function.
You want both formats over the life of the console
Adding the drive preserves a mixed library: downloads for digital purchases and discs for games or films that you own physically. It is the flexible option for households whose media habits may change, provided you accept the extra purchase and the installation and pairing step.
You share a physical library in the household
A drive can also make sense when several people use the same Pro and the household already has supported discs. The relevant question is whether those discs will be used on this console, not whether every household member prefers the same purchase format. If no one will insert a disc, the accessory remains unnecessary hardware.
What the compatible drive supports
The UK product listing identifies Sony’s compatible PS5 Pro drive as model CFI-ZDD1. Sony says it plays PS5 games and a vast back catalogue of supported PS4 titles on Blu-ray. The same drive supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, standard Blu-ray discs, and DVDs.
For the US listing, the package contents include the drive, a white drive cover, two plastic feet for horizontal placement, and a user manual. The cover and feet are relevant because the Pro must be fitted for the orientation in which you intend to place it; do not assume that a loose cover or stand component from another PS5 family member is interchangeable.
The drive expands the kinds of media the Pro can read; it does not change the console into a separate performance tier. A Pro with the drive and a Pro without it are the same PS5 Pro platform once the accessory is installed. The decision is therefore about access to discs, not a graphics, processor, or Game Boost upgrade.
Compatibility: models, covers, and game limits
Console model groups
Sony lists the drive for PS5 Pro and for the slim PS5 Digital Edition model groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100. That is a model-specific compatibility statement. Do not extend it to older Digital Edition model groups without confirmation from Sony.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not buy the wrong cover set
Sony’s PS5 Pro compatibility table says the drive with its cover is compatible with Pro, while cover sets intended for the CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 PS5 model groups are not compatible with Pro. A cover that fits another PS5 does not establish that the drive or its cosmetic panels fit your Pro. If you buy the drive separately, use the Pro-compatible package rather than a cover-only set designed for another model group.
Supported does not mean universal PS4 compatibility
PS5 Pro’s Game Boost announcement referenced more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. That figure describes the console’s Game Boost catalogue; it is not a claim that 8,500 discs are supported by the drive, nor does it mean every PS4 game is playable from disc. Verify the individual game when compatibility matters, especially for older or unusual releases.
Disc format and title compatibility are separate checks
A disc can be the right physical format and still belong to a game Sony does not support on PS5 Pro. Conversely, the drive’s ability to read Blu-ray media does not promise that every game published on that media will run. Check two things independently: whether the accessory is compatible with your console model, and whether the specific PS4 or PS5 title is supported.

Cost: separate accessory, changing prices
Sony announced a US PS5 Pro launch MSRP of $699.99 in September 2024. That is a historical launch price, not a guaranteed current selling price. Console pricing, bundles, promotions, taxes, and stock can change by country and date.
The official PlayStation US accessories listing showed the compatible drive at $79 when indexed in October 2026. Treat that as a time-sensitive US product-page listing, not a universal price or a promise of the checkout total. Availability and regional pricing need to be checked where you live.
For perspective only, adding the indexed $79 accessory listing to the historical $699.99 launch MSRP produces $778.99 before tax. That arithmetic is not a current PS5 Pro bundle price: it combines figures from different dates and should not be used as a quote. To budget accurately, check the current console listing and the current drive listing in the same country and at the same time.
Compare configurations rather than isolated stickers. The relevant totals are: console alone for a fully digital buyer, or console plus the current local drive price for someone who needs discs. Include tax, shipping, a stand or other required accessory only if the local listing requires it, and any difference caused by a retailer promotion. Do not treat the 2024 launch MSRP as a present-day discount benchmark.
How to add and pair the drive
Sony requires an internet connection to pair the drive and console during setup. Plan to have the Pro online before you begin; a disc drive that is physically attached but not paired is not ready for game or movie playback.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the models. Make sure the console is a PS5 Pro and that the accessory is the Pro-compatible drive, model CFI-ZDD1. Do not substitute a drive or cover intended for an incompatible PS5 model group.
- Power down and prepare the console. Follow the supplied manual for removing the appropriate console panel and positioning the drive. Work on a stable surface and keep the drive, cover, and any feet together so no model-specific part is misplaced.
- Attach the drive and cover. Seat the drive fully and fit the supplied white cover. If the console will stand horizontally, use the two plastic feet included in the US package as directed by the manual. Do not force a panel that does not align.
- Connect the Pro to the internet. Start the console with an active internet connection. The online connection is needed for the initial drive-to-console pairing, even though the accessory is physically connected.
- Complete the on-screen pairing and test. Allow the console to finish its setup prompts, then insert a supported game or movie disc. If the disc is not recognized, remove it and check the model, seating, cover alignment, and network pairing before assuming the disc itself is defective.
The exact on-screen wording can change with system software, so use the current manual and the prompts shown by your console rather than relying on an old menu path.

New buyer with no discs
Choose the disc-less Pro if your planned library is entirely digital and you do not need an optical movie player. Buying the drive “just in case” adds cost and hardware without changing the Pro’s core performance.
PS4 owner with a shelf of games
Choose the drive if you want to carry physical PS4 games forward, but first check the compatibility of the particular titles you care about. The drive provides the reading hardware; it cannot override Sony’s game-compatibility limits.
PS5 owner with boxed PS5 games
Adding the drive is the practical route when you want to play those supported PS5 discs on a Pro. Without it, the discs have no way to provide their game data or license to the disc-less console.

Choose the drive if the Pro is also intended to play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, or DVD movies. Choose the disc-less console only if that function is unnecessary because another player or a streaming setup covers it.
Buyer comparing a sale price
Calculate the complete configuration you actually need. A discounted console is not a lower-cost solution if you must immediately add the drive, and a bundled-looking price may use an old launch MSRP rather than today’s local price. Compare the current Pro and current drive listings separately in your region.

Buyer moving from an older Digital Edition
Do not assume that the drive from an earlier PS5 Digital Edition can simply be transferred. Sony’s listed model groups are PS5 Pro and slim Digital Edition CFI-2000 and CFI-2100. Confirm the exact console and accessory models before reusing or ordering parts, and pay particular attention to cover compatibility.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming there are two factory Pro editions. The Pro is sold disc-less; the drive is an accessory.
- Forgetting the pairing requirement. Initial setup needs an internet connection, so plan installation where the console can go online.
- Buying an incompatible cover or drive. Check for PS5 Pro compatibility and the CFI-ZDD1 model rather than relying on a generic “PS5” description.
- Assuming every PS4 disc works. Sony’s wording is “supported” PS4 titles, and a small number of PS4 games are not compatible with PS5 Pro.
- Treating the Game Boost number as a disc guarantee. The more-than-8,500 figure concerns backward-compatible PS4 games and Game Boost, not a promise that every corresponding physical disc will play.
- Using an old price as a current quote. The $699.99 figure is the 2024 US launch MSRP; the $79 figure was a US accessory listing indexed in October 2026. Neither establishes today’s price in every market.
- Installing before checking the room. Decide whether the Pro will sit horizontally or in another supported position, then keep the supplied cover and feet available for that arrangement. Forcing a panel or using a part from another model can create a fit problem.
- Confusing movie support with game support. The drive’s ability to play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs does not guarantee that every game disc is compatible. Game support still has to be checked by title.
Verdict
The right configuration follows your media library, not a performance difference between two Pro consoles. Buy the disc-less PS5 Pro when downloads are all you need. Add the compatible CFI-ZDD1 drive when you own supported physical PS5 or PS4 games, want optical movie playback, or need a console that can handle both digital and disc media. Budget the accessory separately, verify local stock and pricing, confirm each important game’s compatibility, and complete the required online pairing during installation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a PS5 Pro model with a built-in disc drive?
No. Sony’s September 10, 2024 announcement presented PS5 Pro as a disc-less console with the option to purchase the existing PS5 Disc Drive separately. The practical choice is the console alone or that removable accessory, not two factory Pro editions.
What does the compatible PS5 Pro drive play?
Sony lists PS5 games and a vast back catalogue of supported PS4 titles on Blu-ray. It also plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs. Individual PS4 game compatibility still needs to be checked.
Which drive model should I buy for PS5 Pro?
Sony’s UK product listing identifies the compatible drive as model CFI-ZDD1. Confirm that the listing specifically names PS5 Pro before ordering; generic PS5 wording is not enough because compatibility is model-specific.
Do I need internet to use the drive?
Yes, Sony requires an internet connection to pair the drive with the PS5 Pro during initial setup. Plan to connect the console before testing a game or movie disc. The exact on-screen prompts can vary with system software.
Can I use a cover from another PS5?
Do not assume so. Sony’s compatibility table says the drive with its cover is compatible with PS5 Pro, while cover sets for CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 PS5 model groups are not compatible with Pro. Use the cover supplied for the Pro-compatible drive.
Will every PS4 disc work on PS5 Pro?
No. Sony refers to supported PS4 titles and notes that a small number of PS4 games are not compatible with PS5 Pro. The announcement’s more-than-8,500 Game Boost figure is not a promise that every corresponding physical disc will play.
How much does the PS5 Pro drive cost?
The official US accessories listing showed $79 when indexed in October 2026. That is a time-sensitive US listing, not a universal or guaranteed checkout price. Check current local pricing, tax, stock, and promotions when you buy.
Should a digital-only buyer add the drive anyway?
Usually not. If you buy through the PlayStation Store, do not need optical movies, and have no supported discs to carry forward, the accessory adds cost and installation without adding a capability you plan to use. Add it when your media needs justify it.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the PS5 Pro alone for an all-digital library. Add Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive for supported physical PS5 or PS4 games and 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray, or DVD playback. Price the two products separately, verify model and title compatibility, and complete online pairing during setup.
