Yes—the official removable Sony PS5 Disc Drive works with both the PS5 Slim (CFI-2000 model group) and PS5 Pro (CFI-7000 model group). That answer applies to the attachable disc-drive accessory sold for these consoles. It does not mean that the internal optical-drive assembly from a Slim can be removed and installed in a Pro chassis. Sony’s setup guidance states: “Please note, the disc drive is compatible only with PS5® consoles (CFI-2000/7000 model group).”
The short answer: one removable drive, two supported PS5 model groups
Sony treats the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro as compatible with the same removable Disc Drive accessory. The Slim belongs to the CFI-2000 model group, while the Pro belongs to the CFI-7000 model group. If your console’s full model number falls within one of those groups, the official attachable drive is the relevant accessory.

The wording matters because “PS5 Slim disc drive” can describe two different things. It may mean the Sony accessory that attaches to the outside of a compatible console, or it may mean the optical-drive hardware built into a disc-equipped console. Sony’s compatibility statement covers the removable accessory. It does not establish that a Slim’s internal drive mechanism can be transplanted into a Pro, nor does it authorize mixing internal chassis parts.

What Sony’s compatibility information actually covers
| Component or claim | Sony’s stated position |
|---|---|
| Removable PS5 Disc Drive with cover | Compatible with PS5 consoles in the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. |
| PS5 Slim model group | CFI-2000. |
| PS5 Pro model group | CFI-7000. |
| PS5 console covers from the CFI-2000 Slim group | Not compatible with PS5 Pro. |
| First-time drive-console pairing | An internet connection is required during setup. |
This is an accessory-compatibility statement, not a promise that every PS5 exterior part, replacement component or repair procedure crosses between generations. The drive and the decorative covers are separate compatibility questions.
Removable accessory versus an internal optical drive
The accessory Sony supports
The supported product is an attachable disc-drive unit supplied with a compatible cover. It is designed to be fitted to consoles in the listed model groups. Sony’s setup material names the CFI-2000/7000 groups together, which is why the same accessory can serve a Slim or a Pro when the model check is satisfied.
The hardware a console already contains
A disc-equipped console also has optical-drive hardware integrated into its own chassis. The official compatibility material does not say that this internal assembly is interchangeable between a CFI-2000 Slim and a CFI-7000 Pro. Different chassis designs, mounting points, covers and electronics can make internal parts non-interchangeable even when an external accessory is shared.

Therefore, do not interpret “compatible with PS5 Pro” as instructions to disassemble either console. If an internal drive has failed, use the repair route and parts guidance appropriate to that exact console model rather than treating the removable accessory as a replacement mechanism.
How to identify your PS5 model group before buying
Do not rely on the console’s color, retail bundle name or a seller’s shorthand such as “Slim drive.” Verify the full model number printed on the console or the original packaging, then identify its model group.
- Locate the model number. Inspect the label on the console itself or the model information on its packaging. Sony’s guidance identifies the model group as the key compatibility check.
- Read the beginning of the model designation. A CFI-2000 designation indicates the Slim group; a CFI-7000 designation indicates the Pro group.
- Match the accessory description. Select Sony’s removable PS5 Disc Drive with cover, not a listing for console covers, a replacement internal assembly or an unspecified third-party part.
- Resolve uncertainty before opening the package. If a listing does not show the exact accessory or does not identify support for your model group, ask the seller for the full compatibility information. A generic “PS5 drive” label is not enough.
Keep the complete model designation for your records. The group prefix is the fastest check, but the full number is useful if Sony or a retailer asks you to confirm the exact console variant.

What changes between the Slim and Pro
Compatibility of the removable drive
For the official attachable drive, the supported groups are the same: CFI-2000 Slim and CFI-7000 Pro. Sony’s wording limits the accessory to those groups, so an older PS5 model group should not be assumed to support it merely because it is also a PlayStation 5.
Compatibility of console covers
Sony separately lists CFI-2000 Slim console covers as not compatible with PS5 Pro. A drive that works on both model groups does not make the surrounding decorative shell interchangeable. The cover supplied or specified for the accessory must match the console and drive arrangement for which it was designed.
Performance is not the issue addressed here
The official material establishes physical and setup compatibility. It does not publish a separate read-speed, loading-time or image-quality comparison between a “Slim drive” and a “Pro drive.” Since the supported accessory is the same across the two listed groups, buying decisions should focus on model identification and fit rather than expecting a different optical performance tier for Pro.
Installation and first-time pairing
Sony’s setup instructions require an internet connection to pair the drive and console during first-time installation. Plan for that requirement before beginning; an offline installation may not complete the pairing step.
- Prepare the console and accessory. Confirm that the console is a CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 model and that you have the official removable Disc Drive with its matching cover.
- Follow Sony’s physical-installation instructions. Use the procedure supplied for the drive and your console model. Do not substitute Slim covers for Pro covers or attempt to force a component into place.
- Connect the console to the internet. The connection is needed for the initial drive-console pairing identified in Sony’s setup guidance.
- Complete the on-screen setup. Allow the console to finish the pairing process before judging the accessory to be defective. If the console cannot complete setup, recheck the model group, physical seating and network connection.
- Retain the documentation. Keep the installation information and model details in case support needs to verify the console or accessory.
The available compatibility guidance does not specify a particular network type, bandwidth requirement or pairing limit. It establishes only that internet access is required for the initial pairing step.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBuying checklist for a Slim or Pro owner
- Confirm the model group: CFI-2000 for Slim or CFI-7000 for Pro.
- Choose the right product category: the official removable PS5 Disc Drive with cover.
- Reject ambiguous listings: “replacement drive,” “internal optical drive” and “console cover” can describe different parts.
- Check the cover wording: Slim covers are not compatible with PS5 Pro, even though the removable drive itself is.
- Plan for internet access: first-time pairing requires a connection.
- Verify the exact listing: compatibility information should explicitly identify the supported model group.
- Do not infer price or availability: stock, regional pricing and retailer bundle contents change and are not established by Sony’s compatibility statement.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating every PS5 as compatible
The accessory is limited to CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups in Sony’s setup wording. An earlier PS5 model should not be included without a specific Sony confirmation.

Mistake: buying a Slim cover for a Pro
Sony explicitly marks CFI-2000 Slim console covers as incompatible with PS5 Pro. The visual similarity of the consoles does not change that part-specific limitation.
Mistake: assuming an external match proves an internal match
The removable accessory’s cross-group support does not validate moving an internal Slim optical assembly into a Pro. Internal repair compatibility requires separate technical documentation.
Mistake: attempting setup without internet access
Because first-time pairing requires an internet connection, an offline setup can leave the installation incomplete. Connect the console before repeating the pairing step.
Mistake: trusting a marketplace title without reading the specification
Listings may use “PS5 drive” as a catch-all phrase. Read the detailed compatibility line and confirm that the item is the attachable accessory for CFI-2000/7000 consoles.
Troubleshooting a compatibility or setup problem
The drive does not appear to fit
Stop rather than applying force. Recheck that the console is in the CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 group, confirm that you bought the removable accessory rather than a cover or internal part, and verify that the cover orientation follows Sony’s instructions.
The console cannot complete pairing
Confirm that the console is connected to the internet, then restart the setup procedure using Sony’s installation instructions. If the model group is outside CFI-2000/7000, the accessory is outside the compatibility statement and should not be expected to pair.

The accessory works but the cover seems wrong
Separate the two questions: drive compatibility and cover compatibility. A removable drive can be supported on PS5 Pro while a CFI-2000 Slim console cover remains incompatible with that Pro chassis.
A seller supplied an unclear part
Compare the item description with the official accessory name and request the exact model-group support before installing it. If the seller cannot identify the component, treat it as an unresolved compatibility risk.

You own a PS5 Slim without a drive
Check that the console is CFI-2000, then look for Sony’s removable Disc Drive with cover. Internet access will be needed for the first pairing.
You own a PS5 Pro that needs disc support
Check for CFI-7000 and select the same official removable accessory category. Do not order a CFI-2000 Slim cover as a substitute; Sony lists those covers as incompatible with Pro.
You are moving from Slim to Pro
The official compatibility statement covers the accessory on both model groups, so the model-group check remains satisfied for the drive. The statement does not describe transfer limits, account procedures or a guaranteed plug-and-play process between two consoles. Follow Sony’s current setup instructions when installing it on the new console and expect an internet connection for pairing.

Why model groups matter more than the words “Slim” and “Pro”
Product names are useful for shoppers, but Sony’s technical compatibility language is tied to model groups. “Slim” maps to CFI-2000 in the cited setup material, and “Pro” maps to CFI-7000. A retailer can use a different bundle name or omit the family name entirely; the CFI designation remains the dependable check.
This also explains why a single accessory description can mention both consoles while a cover description cannot. Sony is identifying a supported drive interface across two model groups, while the covers are shaped for particular console bodies. Compatibility is component-specific, not a blanket approval for every part made for either system.
Limits of the official evidence
Sony’s support material answers whether the removable drive is supported on the two model groups and notes the internet requirement for first-time pairing. It does not provide a comparative benchmark, a published optical-performance difference, a current retail price, stock information or a general authorization to exchange internal drive assemblies.
Those limits are useful when evaluating online claims. A page that promises faster loading, universal PS5 compatibility or a guaranteed internal-drive swap is making claims beyond the specific compatibility statement described here. For a purchase decision, stay with the model-group check, the correct accessory category and the required online pairing.
Final decision rule
If the console is CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 and the product is Sony’s removable PS5 Disc Drive with cover, the accessory is the supported choice for both PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro. If the product is a Slim cover, an unspecified replacement mechanism or an internal optical-drive part, it is a different compatibility question. Verify the full model number, keep the cover matched to the console, and have internet access ready for first-time pairing.
