PS5 Pro Disc Drive Not Working: How to Fix Common Problems

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

A PS5 Pro that will not read, accept, or eject a disc is not automatically suffering from a failed drive. Start by confirming that your CFI-7000-series console has the detachable drive installed and paired, then test disc orientation, cleanliness, and supported formats. Only after those checks should you use Safe Mode, attempt a data-erasing reinstall, or arrange service.

Start with the configuration, not a repair

The PS5 Pro is sold in a configuration that can use Sony’s detachable disc drive, but the drive is not built into every console package. The PlayStation compatibility documentation lists a disc drive with its matching cover as compatible with PS5 Pro. A console without that accessory cannot read a disc until a compatible drive is installed.

Does the PS5 Pro need a separate disc drive?

Yes, a PS5 Pro that was supplied without a drive needs Sony’s detachable drive and cover. Check the model information on the console and the accessory before diagnosing an absent drive as a malfunction. The PS5 Pro belongs to Sony’s CFI-7000 family; the CFI-ZDD1 disc drive is the compatible accessory identified in Sony’s documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the drive was just installed, treat setup as a separate issue from mechanical reading. Sony’s CFI-2000/7000 setup instructions require the console to be turned off, disconnected from power and other cables, and allowed to cool before the drive is attached. The drive and console also need an internet connection during their initial pairing. A first-use failure can therefore mean that pairing or installation has not completed, rather than that the mechanism is defective.

Check the installation safely

  1. Shut down the console completely. Disconnect the power cable and other cables, and let the console cool.
  2. Follow the model-specific cover-removal instructions. Align the drive’s clips with the two holes in the console and press until the clips click into place.
  3. Fit the included cover and the long feet specified for the drive configuration.
  4. Reconnect the console, start it, and complete the pairing prompt while connected to the internet.

Do not touch the drive’s electrical terminals or the matching connector in the console. Sony’s accessory manual specifically warns against handling those contacts. If the drive cannot be seated without force, stop and check the cover and model instructions rather than pressing harder.

Before testing: protect the console and your data

Use a stable surface and good lighting. Keep the console powered off whenever you remove a cover, disconnect the drive, or work near a trapped disc. Do not repeatedly insert a disc that meets resistance, and do not use household cleaners, abrasive cloths, or compressed air inside the mechanism. A lint-free optical-disc cloth and a #1 Phillips (cross-head) screwdriver are the only supplies Sony’s documented checks may require.

Write down the exact symptom and any code before changing settings. “One movie will not play” points to a different branch than “the console never detects the drive.” If you eventually need PlayStation Repairs, note whether the failure affects one disc or several, whether the drive accepts and ejects normally, and whether abnormal noises occur. This information helps support distinguish media, setup, software, and mechanical symptoms without guessing at a failed part.

Quick diagnosis: what the symptom tells you

What you observe Most useful first check What the result means
The console has no drive installed Confirm the CFI-7000 console and obtain/install the compatible detachable drive This is a missing accessory, not evidence of a failed reader
Only one disc fails Clean it and test another supported game, Blu-ray, or DVD Suspect the disc, its format, or damage before the drive
Several supported discs fail Verify insertion direction, pairing, and Safe Mode steps A console, software, or drive problem becomes more likely; service may be needed
The console reports SU-101312-8 Use Sony’s drive-recognition and update sequence The PS5 cannot detect a Blu-ray Disc drive
A disc is physically stuck Power off, unplug, and use the model-specific manual-release procedure Never pull the disc or operate the console with its cover removed
The drive makes clicking or grinding sounds Stop playback and power down Seek diagnosis rather than continuing to feed discs into the mechanism

This comparison is a triage tool, not a component diagnosis. The same on-screen symptom can result from an unpaired accessory, an unsupported medium, corrupted software, or a physical obstruction.

Why is my PS5 Pro not reading discs?

Work through these checks in order. Reinsert the disc after each physical check so that one bad disc does not obscure a setup or software problem.

1. Confirm that the drive is installed and paired

Look for the detachable drive and its cover on the console. If you have just fitted it, complete the internet pairing prompt before testing games. A drive that has not finished its initial pairing may not behave like a normal reading failure.

Do not remove and reinstall the drive while the console is powered. Shut down, disconnect cables, and let the unit cool first. The clips should align with the two holes and click into place; the cover and long feet must also match the drive configuration. An incorrectly fitted cover or drive can prevent normal operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Insert the disc with the correct side facing out

With the console upright on its stand, Sony says the labeled side of the disc faces left as it enters the drive. Remove the disc and insert it again if the label direction was wrong. Do not push against unusual resistance; a disc that will not enter normally should be handled as a possible mechanical or alignment problem.

If the console is lying horizontally, use the orientation shown in the model-specific guide rather than applying the vertical rule by memory. The important test is a smooth insertion with the printed label facing the direction Sony illustrates for your configuration.

3. Clean the disc without damaging it

Fingerprints, dust, and scratches can make one disc fail while others continue to work. Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth intended for Blu-ray or DVD discs. Wipe from the center toward the outside edge, not in a circular motion. Do not use a rough paper towel or force a visibly damaged disc into the drive.

Hold the disc by its edge while cleaning and let any moisture evaporate before inserting it. Cleaning cannot repair a deep scratch, a warped disc, or a disc with a damaged data layer; use a known-good original disc for comparison.

4. Test a second, known-supported disc

Try another PS5 game, compatible PS4 Blu-ray game, Blu-ray movie, or DVD. If the second disc works, concentrate on the original disc or its format rather than replacing the drive. If several supported discs fail in the same way, continue with the software and recognition checks below.

Testing more than one category is useful: a PS5 game and a commercial Blu-ray or DVD can show whether the problem follows a particular disc or affects the drive broadly. Record which media work instead of assuming that a single successful read clears every possible issue.

5. Exclude unsupported media

PS5 consoles do not play burned discs or audio CDs. PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 software cannot be played from disc on this drive either. Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 manual lists the following media categories, subject to the model’s documented exceptions:

Media category Examples documented by Sony
PlayStation game media PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray and compatible PS4 Blu-ray discs
Video Blu-ray media Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R, and BD-RE (the manual notes an exception for a BD-RE version)
DVD media DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and AVCHD
Not playable Audio CDs, burned discs as described in Sony’s troubleshooting guidance, and PS1, PS2, or PS3 software discs

The support guidance’s statement about burned discs should take precedence when you are checking a home-recorded disc. Do not assume that a recordable-media label guarantees playback; use an original, supported game or movie as the control test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why won’t my PS5 Pro take or eject a disc?

A disc that will not enter or come out can be caused by an incorrectly fitted cover, a disc already inside the drive, or a mechanical obstruction. Never force the disc. For a disc that is stuck, use Sony’s manual-release procedure only after the console is completely shut down.

Safe manual release procedure

Prepare a well-lit workspace, a #1 Phillips (cross-head) screwdriver, and, if useful, a small flashlight. Sony’s general PS5 disc-help page covers the release process, but cover removal differs by model, so use the instructions for your exact PS5 Pro and drive configuration.

  1. Turn the console off completely.
  2. Disconnect the power cable and every other cable or device.
  3. Remove the stand and the drive cover following the model-specific instructions.
  4. Locate the manual-release screw. Turn it clockwise with the screwdriver until the disc is almost fully visible.
  5. Gently remove the disc by hand.
  6. Reinstall the cover and stand before reconnecting and powering the console.

Sony’s warning is explicit: “Do not forcibly pull the disc from the disc drive.” Do not turn on or play the console with the cover off. If the screw does not move normally, the disc cannot be removed gently, or you are unsure which cover to remove, stop and use PlayStation Repairs.

Use Safe Mode before considering a reset

When multiple supported discs fail and the drive is installed and paired, Sony recommends clearing the cache and rebuilding the database in Safe Mode. These steps are intended to address software and database conditions without immediately erasing console content.

  1. Turn the PS5 Pro off.
  2. Enter Safe Mode using the console’s power-button procedure, then connect the controller with a USB cable and press the controller’s PS button when prompted.
  3. Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
  4. Run the cache-clearing option first. If the problem remains, return to Safe Mode and run database rebuilding.
  5. Restart the console and test a known-supported disc.

Database rebuilding can take time. Do not disconnect power while the console is processing. If the drive still fails after these non-destructive steps, Sony lists Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as a later option, not a routine first check.

Safe Mode is not a substitute for pairing the detachable drive or correcting a disc that is upside down. It belongs after the configuration and media checks because it changes software state, while those earlier checks are simpler and reversible.

Understand the consequence of reinstalling

Back up the console before any reset or reinstall. Sony’s exact warning is: “Selecting Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all information on the console.” That includes local user data, installed games, settings, and saves stored only on the console. A reinstall can address a damaged system-software state, but it cannot repair a physically obstructed or unrecognized drive. Use it only after the reversible checks and after you have preserved data you need.

What does PS5 error SU-101312-8 mean?

SU-101312-8 means that the PS5 cannot detect a Blu-ray Disc drive. The code describes drive recognition; it does not, by itself, identify which component has failed. First verify that the detachable drive has not been physically removed and that its installation and pairing are complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony’s sequence when the drive has not been removed

  1. Turn the console off and unplug it.
  2. Restart your router, then wait at least five minutes before continuing.
  3. Restart the PS5 Pro.
  4. Delete the update file from Notifications.
  5. Retry the system update.

The internet step matters because the detachable drive must pair with the console during setup and system updates may need to be retrieved again. Do not interrupt an update by removing power. If the code appears immediately after a drive installation, recheck seating and the cover before assuming that the update itself caused a hardware failure.

If the code persists, Sony suggests resetting the console and warns that saved data is erased. Back up first wherever possible. A reset is not proof that the drive itself is defective; it is the final software-level option in this sequence.

When to stop troubleshooting and seek service

Use PlayStation Repairs when Sony’s disc-reading steps do not resolve the problem. The PS5 Pro support troubleshooting paths include a “Disc error” route for specialist help.

  • Several clean, supported discs fail while the drive is installed and paired.
  • SU-101312-8 returns after the power, router, notification, and update steps.
  • The drive makes repeated grinding, clicking, or other abnormal mechanical noises.
  • The console will not accept or eject a disc after the safe manual-release check.
  • The drive cannot be seated without force, or its cover and connector alignment remain uncertain.

These symptoms justify a professional diagnosis; they do not prove a particular failed component. Keep the console powered off if a disc is trapped or the mechanism is making severe noises, and do not open the drive beyond Sony’s documented manual-release procedure.

Before contacting support, have the console model, drive model, error code, purchase or installation context, and the results of your one-disc-versus-several-disc tests ready. Describe exactly what happens when you insert a disc: no motor sound, repeated attempts, an on-screen error, or immediate ejection. Should you buy a replacement drive?

A replacement is sensible only in two circumstances: a PS5 Pro that was supplied without a drive needs the compatible accessory, or PlayStation support has confirmed that the existing drive is defective. The Sony CFI-ZDD1 is the model identified as compatible with PS5 Pro. Install it using Sony’s power-off, cooled-console procedure and complete internet pairing.

Buying a disc-cleaning cloth or a #1 Phillips screwdriver can provide the supplies needed for the documented checks, but neither item repairs a failing drive. Do not buy a replacement merely because one scratched, unsupported, or burned disc fails. Pricing and availability vary by region, so verify the model and included cover with the retailer and Sony’s compatibility information before ordering.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every PS5 Pro includes a disc drive.
  • Trying to pair a newly installed drive without an internet connection.
  • Inserting a disc label-side wrong on a vertical console.
  • Using audio CDs, burned media, or PS1, PS2, or PS3 discs as a compatibility test.
  • Cleaning in circles or with abrasive material.
  • Running Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) before backing up.
  • Pulling a stuck disc, turning the manual-release screw the wrong way, or powering on with the cover removed.
  • Continuing to operate a drive that makes severe mechanical noises.

A safe decision path

  1. Identify the hardware: confirm the CFI-7000-series PS5 Pro and whether the detachable drive and cover are present.
  2. Finish setup: if newly installed, power down before checking the clips, cover, feet, and internet pairing.
  3. Test the media: insert with the label facing left on a vertical console, clean the disc, and try another supported game, Blu-ray, or DVD.
  4. Check recognition: if SU-101312-8 appears, follow Sony’s unplug, router, notification, and update sequence.
  5. Use Safe Mode: clear the cache, then rebuild the database.
  6. Protect data: back up before considering Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), which deletes all console information.
  7. Handle physical problems carefully: use the manual-release screw for a stuck disc; never force it or operate with the cover off.
  8. Escalate: contact PlayStation Repairs for persistent failures across supported discs, repeated recognition errors, abnormal noises, or continued loading/eject problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the PS5 Pro without buying a disc drive?

Yes, for digitally downloaded games and media. To use physical games, Blu-ray discs, or DVDs, a PS5 Pro without a built-in reader needs the compatible Sony detachable drive and cover, then internet pairing during setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does one disc work while another does not?

Clean the failing disc from the center outward and check that its format is supported. If other original PS5 games, compatible PS4 Blu-ray games, Blu-rays, or DVDs work, the problem is more likely the disc, damage, or unsupported media than the drive.

Can the PS5 Pro play audio CDs or burned discs?

No. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance excludes audio CDs and burned discs. PS1, PS2, and PS3 software discs are also not playable on this drive.

Is rebuilding the database safe?

Sony places Clear Cache and Rebuild Database before the reinstall option for persistent disc problems. It is the less destructive software check, but keep the console powered while it works and follow the on-screen instructions.

Will resetting the PS5 Pro fix a disc drive?

A reset may address a damaged system-software state, but it cannot remove a physical obstruction or repair an unrecognized mechanism. Sony warns that Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all information, so back up first and use it only after earlier checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the disc is stuck?

Turn the console off, unplug every cable, remove the stand and cover according to your exact model instructions, and turn the manual-release screw clockwise until the disc is almost visible. Gently remove it; never force it or operate the console with the cover off.

When should I contact PlayStation Repairs?

Seek service when multiple clean, supported discs fail, SU-101312-8 keeps returning, the drive makes abnormal noises, or it will not accept or eject discs after the documented checks. These symptoms warrant diagnosis but do not identify a specific failed part.

The Bottom Line

Confirm the PS5 Pro model, detachable-drive installation, cover fit, and internet pairing first. Then test correct disc orientation, clean supported media, and a second known-good disc. Use Sony’s Safe Mode cache and database steps before any reset; back up because reinstalling deletes console information. Never force a stuck disc or run the console with its cover off. If recognition errors, reading failures, or mechanical symptoms persist, stop and use PlayStation Repairs.
