For most people who want to keep playing PlayStation games, buy the standard PS5 1TB disc console. It keeps your PlayStation Network account, digital purchases, multiplayer friends and the current PS5 game library, but it does not provide PS5 Pro’s game-dependent visual and performance enhancements. Choose Xbox Series X only if you are comfortable moving to a different ecosystem and specifically value Xbox games, supported backward compatibility or Microsoft’s console services. Consider waiting for a PS5 Pro restock when its enhancements matter more to you than immediate access to your games. Check local inventory and the current street price before paying.
The short answer: choose by ecosystem first, performance second
A PS5 Pro shortage creates three genuinely different choices rather than a simple performance ranking:

- Standard PS5: the safest replacement for a PS5 Pro if you already own PlayStation games or want to stay with PlayStation. You get standard PS5 performance, not the Pro uplift.
- Xbox Series X: a high-end console alternative for someone willing to start or continue in Xbox’s ecosystem. It does not run PlayStation purchases or replace a PlayStation Network library.
- Wait for PS5 Pro: sensible when you specifically want Pro features, have a display and games that can show them, and can tolerate uncertain stock.
A Nintendo system can be the right choice for Nintendo-exclusive games, but current pricing, specifications and availability should be checked separately before treating it as a PS5 Pro substitute. The evidence available here does not establish a current Nintendo comparison.
Current recommended prices and hardware differences
Sony’s U.S. recommended prices changed on April 2, 2026. They are reference prices, not guarantees of what a retailer is charging today. Sony also publishes regional recommended prices for the United Kingdom, Europe and Japan.

Sony’s published regional recommended prices are £569.99, £519.99 and £789.99 in the United Kingdom; €649.99, €599.99 and €899.99 in Europe; and ¥97,980, ¥89,980 and ¥137,980 in Japan, respectively for the standard PS5, PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro. These figures are regional recommendations, not live local prices.
The Pro’s historical U.S. launch price was $699.99. That figure is no longer the current U.S. recommendation, so old launch coverage can understate what a new buyer should budget. Sony said the 2026 increase reflected “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” in its March 27, 2026 announcement.
Option 1: buy the standard PS5 1TB disc console
Who should choose it
Choose the standard PS5 when your priority is playing PlayStation games now, using physical discs, or keeping an existing PlayStation setup intact. Your PlayStation Network account, digital purchases and friends remain relevant, and supported PS4 games also carry forward through PS5 compatibility. This is the strongest physical-product path when a Pro is unavailable or outside your budget.

What you give up compared with PS5 Pro
The standard model does not have the Pro’s extra graphics hardware or title-specific enhancements. Sony described PS5 Pro, at launch, as having 67% more GPU compute units, 28% faster memory and up to 45% faster rendering than the then-current PS5. Those are Sony’s manufacturer comparisons from September 2024, and the benefit depends on whether a particular game supports the relevant Pro features. They are not a promise of a fixed frame rate or resolution in every title.
If your main reason for wanting a Pro is a particular game, check that game’s current Pro-enhanced status before deciding. A standard PS5 will still provide access to the game, but without the enhanced mode or image-quality/performance combination that the developer may have implemented for Pro.
Why the disc model is the safer default
- You can play used, borrowed and boxed PS5 and PS4 discs rather than buying every title digitally.
- You avoid the storage and download-time demands of an all-digital library for games you can install from disc.
- You retain flexibility if your internet connection is slow, capped or unreliable.
The disc console costs $50 more than Sony’s current U.S. recommendation for the Digital Edition. Whether that difference is worthwhile depends on how often you buy physical games and the prices available in your country; compare the console premium with the discounts you normally find on discs.

When the Digital Edition is the better fit
Pick the PS5 Digital Edition if you already buy exclusively from the PlayStation Store, do not need Blu-ray playback and prefer the lower official entry price. Sony lists 825GB rather than 1TB of storage, so leave room in your budget for managing or expanding storage as your installed library grows. Do not assume that a digital purchase can be converted into a disc entitlement, or that a disc you own can be used without a drive.

What Xbox Series X offers
Microsoft’s current U.S. product page displays a $799.99 ERP for the 1TB disc Xbox Series X and $749.99 ERP for the 1TB all-digital model. The page also lists a 2TB disc model at $799.99. ERP is a page-displayed reference figure, not a guarantee of local retail price or stock.
Microsoft positions Series X for true 4K output and up to 120 frames per second, and lists a 12-teraflop GPU. These are manufacturer-published specifications and targets rather than independent head-to-head measurements against PS5 or PS5 Pro. Supported backward compatibility includes thousands of games from Xbox One, Xbox 360 and the original Xbox. The word “supported” matters: compatibility is determined by Microsoft’s list and does not mean every older title works.

The ecosystem trade-off
Xbox Series X is not a drop-in replacement for a PlayStation library. PlayStation digital purchases, PlayStation Plus entitlements, trophies and PSN friends do not transfer into Xbox. Before switching, write down the games you play most, identify which are exclusive or account-bound, and confirm that their Xbox versions exist and meet your expectations.
Xbox can make sense when your friends already play there, when its backward-compatible catalogue covers games you want, or when Microsoft’s services and first-party catalogue fit your habits. Subscription prices and catalogue availability vary by country and can change, so verify them on Microsoft’s local store instead of relying on an old comparison.

The 1TB disc model is the flexible choice if you use boxed games or want a physical library. The 1TB digital model removes the drive and is cheaper on Microsoft’s displayed U.S. ERP, but it has the same ecosystem switch and download-only constraint as a digital PS5. The listed 2TB disc model adds capacity while retaining physical-game support; confirm the exact model and local price because configurations differ by market.

Option 3: wait for a PS5 Pro restock
Waiting is rational when Pro-specific benefits are your priority
Wait when you have a 4K or higher-quality display, care about the way supported games balance image quality and frame rate, and do not need a console immediately. Sony says PS5 Pro features apply to selected enhanced games and vary by title. The sensible test is your own library: list the games you intend to play, then check each developer’s current Pro support rather than assuming that every new release or older favourite receives an upgrade.
PS5 Pro also includes Game Boost for supported titles, and Sony reported more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games playable on the console. Game Boost can stabilize or improve performance in supported games, but Sony does not say that every compatible game receives the same treatment.
Account for the disc-drive decision
PS5 Pro is disc-less. Sony announced an option to add a separately sold Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive. If you own boxed games or want movie-disc playback, include that accessory and its local price in the total cost before comparing Pro with the standard disc PS5. A Pro plus drive may be substantially more expensive than the console recommendation alone.
Set a safe waiting rule
- Choose the maximum total price you are willing to pay, including any disc drive, extra storage and delivery.
- Check several reputable local retailers and Sony’s own store for the exact model, warranty and return terms.
- Ignore listings that are materially above your limit unless you have independently verified the seller and warranty.
- Keep the standard PS5 as your fallback so a prolonged shortage does not force an impulsive purchase from an unfamiliar seller.
How to decide in five minutes
Start with your existing library
- Mostly PlayStation digital games or PSN multiplayer: standard PS5 is the low-risk choice; waiting is worthwhile only if Pro enhancements are central to your decision.
- Mostly physical PlayStation games: choose the standard PS5 disc model, or budget for the separate drive if you wait for Pro.
- No established console library: compare the games, friends and services you actually want on each platform instead of comparing teraflops alone.
Then check the urgency

Buying checklist: avoid the common mistakes
- Confirm the country and currency. Sony’s and Microsoft’s displayed figures are market-specific recommendations or ERPs. Convert neither into a guaranteed local checkout price.
- Verify the exact model. Check storage, disc-drive inclusion and whether the listing is a standard PS5, Digital Edition, Pro, Xbox disc model or Xbox digital model.
- Price the complete setup. Add a PS5 Pro disc drive if needed, plus any storage expansion, delivery and taxes shown by your retailer.
- Check stock at checkout. A search-result badge or “available soon” message is not the same as a confirmed order and delivery date.
- Check game support. Pro enhancements are title-specific; Xbox backward compatibility is limited to supported games.
- Check warranty and returns. A shortage can encourage marketplace listings with unclear regional warranties or inflated prices.
- Do not buy for a headline frame-rate number alone. “Up to 120 FPS,” “up to 45% faster rendering” and similar figures are manufacturer targets or claims with conditions, not a result guaranteed in every game.
What not to assume about PS5 Pro alternatives
- A standard PS5 is not a Pro-equivalent. It is the continuity and availability choice, with standard PS5 performance.
- Xbox Series X does not run PlayStation purchases. Moving platforms means rebuilding or repurchasing a library where a game is available.
- Every PS5 game is not automatically Pro-enhanced. Support and the resulting image-quality or performance behavior vary by title.
- A digital model is not merely a cheaper disc model. Removing the drive changes how you buy, borrow, resell and play physical games.
- Recommended prices are not live prices. Retailer discounts, bundles, taxes, currency and shortages can change the amount you actually pay.
Bottom line for each buyer
Buy the standard PS5 now if PlayStation continuity matters
The standard PS5 1TB disc console is the practical answer for someone who wants to keep playing PlayStation games while the Pro is unavailable. It preserves your ecosystem and physical-media options at a lower official U.S. recommendation than Pro, while accepting standard PS5 performance.
Buy Xbox Series X only for a deliberate platform change
Series X is a credible alternative console, not a substitute for a PlayStation account. Choose it when Xbox’s games, supported backward compatibility and services fit you better than keeping your existing PlayStation library.
Wait for PS5 Pro when its supported-game advantages justify the delay
Waiting makes sense when you can verify that your favourite games use Pro features, you want the premium model, and you have included the cost of a separate disc drive if required. Otherwise, a confirmed standard PS5 purchase is safer than paying a shortage markup.
