The best PS5 Pro alternative depends on the experience you want, not a single performance ranking. Choose an Xbox console for straightforward TV gaming and its platform library, a ROG Xbox Ally handheld for portable PC games, a conventional gaming desktop for upgradeability and work, or a Steam Machine-style living-room PC for Steam on a television. These systems do not deliver the same balance of simplicity, portability, software compatibility, or upgrade potential, and there is no controlled test here that establishes one universal performance winner over PS5 Pro.
Start with the kind of system you actually need
A PS5 Pro alternative can mean four very different things. A console is a closed, TV-first appliance. A handheld gaming PC is a battery-powered computer that trades some stationary performance and simplicity for portability. A desktop is a configurable computer that can be upgraded and used for work. A compact living-room PC aims to bring a computer library to the sofa but still inherits PC operating-system and compatibility issues.

Use this order of priorities before comparing specifications:
- TV simplicity: Choose a console if you want to connect it, sign in, install games and play with minimal maintenance.
- Portable PC access: Choose a handheld if playing away from a desk matters more than matching a stationary console’s sustained performance.
- Upgrades and general computing: Choose a desktop if you want replaceable components, higher configuration flexibility and one machine for games, work or creative applications.
- PC games from the sofa: Consider a Steam Machine category device, but verify its shipping status, specifications, price and compatibility for the games you play before buying.
How the alternatives differ
| System | Primary setting | Library and software | Upgradeability | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 Pro | Television and controller | PlayStation console library and services | Fixed console hardware | Simple, focused experience but limited to the console platform |
| ROG Xbox Ally | Handheld, with optional display connection | Windows PC games, Xbox mode, Game Pass titles and Xbox remote play | Internal hardware is not a desktop-style upgrade platform; storage can be expanded with compatible microSD media | Portable PC access requires Windows and battery management rather than a pure console setup |
| ROG Xbox Ally X | Handheld | Windows PC games, Xbox mode, Game Pass titles and Xbox remote play | Handheld form factor with limited component replacement compared with a desktop | Higher-capacity configuration costs more and still cannot replace a desktop for every use |
| ROG Xbox Ally X20 | Handheld | Windows PC games, Xbox mode, Game Pass titles and Xbox remote play | Handheld form factor; check the exact storage-expansion and accessory compatibility for your region | Premium price and portable performance are different from a TV-first console experience |
| Steam Machine-style PC | Living-room television | SteamOS and the Steam catalog, subject to game and anti-cheat support | Hardware is presented as a fixed configuration in PCWorld’s comparison | More PC flexibility than a console, but some games and kernel-level anti-cheat systems may not work |
| Conventional gaming desktop | Desk monitor, or television with suitable peripherals | Broad PC storefront and application access, subject to operating-system requirements | Choose and replace components over time | You must select parts, install and maintain software, and pay for the performance level you want |
| Xbox Series X or Series S | Television and controller | Xbox console library and subscription ecosystem | Fixed console hardware | Console simplicity and Xbox services, with model-specific storage and performance differences |
The table describes categories and vendor or comparison coverage, not a benchmark ranking. Display resolution, graphics settings, frame-rate targets, game patches and operating-system support can change the practical result for a particular title.

ROG Xbox Ally family: the portable-PC alternative
Microsoft’s Xbox product page lists three handhelds in the family. The ROG Xbox Ally has a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display, 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD. The ROG Xbox Ally X has a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display, 24GB of memory and a 1TB SSD. The ROG Xbox Ally X20 has a 7.4-inch OLED 1080p 120Hz display, 24GB of memory and a 1TB SSD. These are listed product specifications, not independent battery-life or performance tests.
The devices boot into an Xbox mode, and Microsoft says progress can synchronize through an Xbox account. ASUS describes access to Windows 11, PC titles and Game Pass games, along with remote play from an Xbox console. Cloud play requires a Game Pass membership. In practice, that makes the family attractive to someone who wants one handheld interface for Xbox-connected features and a wider Windows PC library.
Which Ally configuration makes sense?
- ROG Xbox Ally: The 512GB SSD and 16GB memory are the entry configuration in the listed family. It is the sensible starting point when portability matters and your installed library can fit the available storage or be rotated.
- ROG Xbox Ally X: The 1TB SSD and 24GB memory provide more headroom for large PC installations and multitasking than the base model’s listed configuration. Its launch pricing was substantially above the base model.
- ROG Xbox Ally X20: The listed 7.4-inch OLED display is the largest and most premium panel in the family. ASUS’s US store displayed $1,299.99 when accessed in 2026; that is a dated US observation, not a guaranteed current or worldwide price.
TechRadar reported 2025 launch prices of $599.99 in the US, £499.99 in the UK and AU$999 for the original ROG Xbox Ally. It reported a 2025 launch price of $999.99 in the US, £799.99 in the UK and AU$1,599 for the ROG Xbox Ally X. Those are historical launch figures dated October 15, 2025, not current retailer quotes.

What handheld ownership involves
A handheld is not simply a smaller PS5 Pro. You will manage Windows updates, game-launcher behavior, graphics settings, controller profiles, storage and battery charging. A 120Hz panel can display high refresh rates, but the game and the device’s power limits determine whether a title can sustain a given frame rate. Connecting to a monitor or television can make the device useful at home, yet it remains a portable computer with its own power and thermal limits.
Microsoft lists compatible accessories such as SanDisk microSD cards, a ROG Ally premium case and a ROG 100W gaming charger dock. Confirm the exact model, regional availability and compatibility before purchasing an accessory; a case or dock for one handheld generation may not fit another.
Choose the handheld when these answers are “yes”
- You will genuinely play in several locations or while travelling.
- Your priority is access to PC games rather than a fixed console-exclusive catalog.
- You accept shorter unplugged sessions and more configuration than a console requires.
- You value Xbox account synchronization, Game Pass access or Xbox console remote play.
Conventional gaming desktop: the upgradeable alternative
A gaming desktop is the clearest alternative when the word “alternative” means a more capable computer rather than another appliance. You can choose the processor, graphics card, memory, storage, power supply, case and cooling, then replace individual components later. The same machine can run office software, development tools, media applications and other PC programs.
What you gain
- Component choice: You can allocate more of the budget to graphics performance, add storage later or replace a failed part without replacing the entire system.
- Broad software access: A desktop supports PC storefronts and applications that are unavailable on a console, provided the operating system and hardware meet each program’s requirements.
- Display flexibility: It can drive a desk monitor, a television or multiple displays, subject to the graphics hardware and connection standards you select.
- Long-term serviceability: Cleaning, replacing fans and upgrading memory or storage are normal maintenance rather than an exception.
What you must budget and manage
The total cost is not just the tower. Include a monitor or television connection, keyboard and mouse, controller, operating-system license where applicable, adequate power delivery, cooling, storage and any networking equipment. A prebuilt desktop may reduce assembly work but can still have proprietary parts or limited upgrade paths; inspect the component list and warranty terms.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Performance varies sharply with the parts you choose, so an honest comparison cannot assign one desktop specification or price to every buyer. Decide first whether you target 1080p, 1440p or 4K, then use current independent tests for the exact graphics card, processor and games you are considering. Do not treat a desktop’s theoretical upgrade path as an immediate performance guarantee.
Desktop versus a PS5 Pro in daily use
A console usually wins on predictable setup: install a game, apply updates and use a controller from the sofa. A desktop wins when you want adjustable settings, mods where supported, multiple storefronts, productivity software and the ability to change hardware. It also exposes you to driver updates, launcher accounts, graphics settings and troubleshooting. Neither category is universally better; the decision follows how much control you want to exercise.
Steam Machine-style living-room PCs
PCWorld describes Steam Machine as a living-room PC running SteamOS and contrasts its fixed hardware with the upgradeability of a traditional desktop. The category aims to put a PC library and a console-like interface on a television. That can be appealing if your existing games are on Steam and you want a compact sofa setup without building a full tower.

Why this category is appealing
- SteamOS can provide a controller-oriented living-room interface.
- PC access brings more software flexibility than a traditional console.
- A fixed hardware design may be easier to use than selecting every desktop component.
Why compatibility needs checking
PCWorld’s comparison identifies console exclusives and some kernel-level anti-cheat titles as limitations. Anti-cheat software can depend on operating-system privileges that are unavailable or unsupported on Linux-based systems. A game that appears in a storefront is not automatically guaranteed to work in multiplayer on SteamOS.
Before buying, check the developer’s current operating-system and anti-cheat documentation for every important title. Verify whether the game supports Linux or a compatibility layer, whether multiplayer is enabled, and whether updates have changed that status. No official current Steam Machine price, complete primary specification sheet or confirmed availability was published in the available product information, so those facts must be checked for the specific product being sold.
Xbox Series consoles: the straightforward TV option
Xbox Series X and Series S are the conventional console alternatives in the comparison coverage. They target television play with a controller, fixed hardware and the Xbox game ecosystem. This is the closest category match for someone who wants to replace one living-room console with another rather than move to Windows or Linux.
Compare the two models by the games you play, required storage, display resolution, subscription preferences and current regional pricing. PCWorld’s cited prices are time-sensitive secondary claims; use the current official Xbox product page and a local retailer before making a value judgment. Do not assume that either Xbox model is universally cheaper or faster than PS5 Pro.
When Xbox is the better fit
- You already use an Xbox account, controller or subscription library.
- The titles you care about are available on Xbox and you prefer console installation to PC configuration.
- You want a television-first device and have no need for component upgrades or desktop applications.
When it is not the right substitute
An Xbox console does not provide the portability of a handheld or the component choice of a desktop. Its game availability also differs from PlayStation’s catalog. Make a title-by-title list of the games you actually intend to play instead of assuming that a platform’s overall reputation predicts your personal library.
Game libraries, operating systems and anti-cheat
Library compatibility is often more important than a specification sheet. PlayStation, Xbox, Windows PC and SteamOS do not expose exactly the same games, saves, storefronts or multiplayer services. A game may be available on PC but not on a console, or available on a storefront while a particular operating system cannot run its anti-cheat component.
- List your non-negotiable games. Include single-player titles, competitive multiplayer games and games you expect to buy in the next year.
- Check the exact platform. Distinguish Xbox console, Windows PC, SteamOS and remote play; they are not interchangeable entries.
- Check multiplayer requirements. Look for the developer’s current anti-cheat and operating-system support, especially for kernel-level systems.
- Check save and account behavior. Confirm whether cross-save, cross-progression or cloud saves apply to the edition you will purchase.
- Check updates. Compatibility can change after a game or anti-cheat update, so use current support pages rather than an old forum post.
This process matters most for a SteamOS living-room PC and a Windows handheld. Consoles generally offer a more predictable software path, while desktops offer the broadest choice but also the most responsibility for configuration.
Performance: compare your display and settings, not a headline
There is no cited controlled benchmark comparing all these alternatives with PS5 Pro. A universal “fastest” verdict would therefore be misleading. Performance depends on the game, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling, ray tracing, frame-rate cap, cooling, power mode and driver or system software.
Use a display-first comparison:
- 1080p television or monitor: A handheld’s 1080p panel may be a sensible native target, but external-display performance depends on the handheld’s power and graphics limits.
- 1440p monitor: A desktop gives you the widest choice of graphics hardware for this target. A console or handheld may require reconstruction or reduced settings in demanding games.
- 4K television: Check independent tests for the exact game and graphics mode. Do not infer 4K frame rates from a device’s output capability alone.
- High-refresh display: A 120Hz panel can show up to 120 refreshes per second, but the game must render enough frames and the system must sustain them.
When reading a benchmark, record the resolution, preset, upscaling mode, ray-tracing setting, frame-time behavior and test version. A single average frame-rate number cannot describe every alternative’s experience.

No current PS5 Pro price was established in the available product-page capture, so do not use an unverified figure to claim that any alternative is cheaper. For an Xbox console or desktop, create a region-matched total rather than comparing a bare device price with a complete setup.
Calculate the real system cost
- Console: Add extra storage, a second controller, subscription fees and any game purchases you will actually make.
- Handheld: Add a case, storage card or dock only if needed, plus the cost of games, Game Pass membership for cloud play and a suitable charger.
- Desktop: Add the display, input devices, operating system where applicable, networking, speakers or headset and future upgrade budget.
- Living-room PC: Add a controller, television connection, storage and any accessory required by the specific model.
Setup and maintenance by category
Console checklist
- Confirm the console supports your must-have games and preferred subscription.
- Check HDMI, television resolution and available storage.
- Install system and game updates before judging load times or features.
- Enable cloud saves or account synchronization where your subscription and games support it.
Handheld checklist

SteamOS living-room PC checklist
- Confirm the seller’s current shipping status, hardware specification and warranty.
- Check every essential game for SteamOS and anti-cheat support.
- Pair the controller and test television resolution, audio and sleep/wake behavior.
- Keep a fallback device available for games that require unsupported anti-cheat or a different operating system.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by peak specification
A larger SSD, more memory or a 120Hz screen does not guarantee higher frame rates in every game. Match the device to your display and the titles you play.
Treating a handheld as a console replacement
A handheld can connect to a larger screen, but Windows updates, launchers, power modes and battery limits remain part of ownership. Buy it for portability first, not because a dock makes it identical to a fixed console.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAssuming every PC game works on SteamOS
Kernel-level anti-cheat and unsupported launchers can block multiplayer even when a game appears in a PC catalog. Verify the exact title and current support status.
Using historical prices as current bargains
The 2025 Ally launch prices and the 2026 X20 store observation are dated references. Check the checkout price in your country, including tax, shipping and accessories.
Ignoring the library decision
Make the game list first. A cheaper system that cannot run your essential titles is not a useful alternative.
A practical decision path
- Choose the location. If you play almost exclusively on a television, start with Xbox consoles or a living-room PC. If you play in different rooms or while travelling, start with a handheld. If you work at a desk, start with a desktop.
- Choose the software ecosystem. Pick the platform that contains your essential games, saves and friends. Check anti-cheat before selecting SteamOS.
- Set the display target. Decide whether 1080p, 1440p or 4K matters, and whether high refresh or visual quality is more important.
- Calculate the complete cost. Include storage, controllers, display, subscriptions, accessories and likely upgrades.
- Validate current facts. Recheck regional price, availability, specifications, game support and warranty immediately before ordering.
Which alternative fits which reader?
Choose an Xbox console if simplicity comes first
This is the most direct path for a TV-first player who wants a conventional console interface and Xbox’s game ecosystem. Compare Series X and Series S using current local pricing, storage needs and the games you actually play.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally family if portability comes first
The handhelds combine a 1080p high-refresh display with Windows PC access, Xbox mode and account-linked features. Accept battery management and Windows setup as part of the trade for portable play.
Choose a conventional desktop if flexibility comes first
A desktop is the strongest fit for buyers who want replaceable components, broad PC software and one computer for gaming and non-gaming work. Its price and performance depend on the exact build, so use current part prices and independent tests.
Choose a Steam Machine-style PC only after compatibility checks
It can make sense for a Steam-heavy library and a compact television setup, but its fixed hardware, uncertain current availability and possible anti-cheat limitations require more verification than a standard console purchase.
