PS5 Performance Mode vs Resolution Mode: Which Setting Suits Cinematic Action Games?

Choose Performance mode if combat timing, traversal and smooth camera movement matter most. Choose Resolution or Fidelity mode if you would rather have the sharpest image, denser effects and ray-traced lighting on a large 4K HDR screen. Before deciding, check the individual game’s options: some add a 40-fps mode, an unlocked frame-rate mode or a VRR setting, and those choices may require a 120Hz display.

The short answer

For most cinematic action games, Performance mode is the better starting point. Dodging, aiming, parrying, driving and rapidly turning the camera all feel more immediate when a game delivers more frames per second and lower input-to-photon delay. The trade-off can be a lower internal rendering resolution, simpler reflections, reduced ray tracing or fewer distant effects.

Resolution, often called Fidelity, Quality or Visual Quality, is the better choice when your priority is a film-like presentation. It generally preserves more detail, higher-quality shadows, richer foliage, denser effects and ray-traced reflections, but usually at a lower frame rate. The right choice depends on the game’s implementation, your display and how sensitive you are to motion smoothness.

Priority Start with Why What you may give up
Responsive combat, aiming and dodging Performance More frequent frames and lower perceived latency make movement easier to read and actions quicker to time. Some image detail, ray tracing or effects may be reduced.
Sharp detail and cinematic composition Resolution/Fidelity Higher-quality rendering, reflections and effects can look better during exploration and cutscenes. Motion can look less fluid, especially during fast camera pans.
High frame rate with strong image quality 40-fps, unlocked or enhanced mode, if offered Some games use a 120Hz or VRR display to combine visual settings with a smoother target. Availability is title-specific and may require compatible hardware.

What Performance and Resolution modes actually change

Performance mode

Performance mode allocates more of the console’s rendering budget to producing frames. A game may lower its internal resolution, use a more aggressive reconstruction method, simplify shadows, reduce foliage density or disable some ray-traced effects to reach its frame-rate target. The exact combination is decided by the developer; there is no universal PS5 Performance specification.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The benefit is not limited to a counter showing more frames. A higher frame rate gives the display new image information more often, so a quick turn of the camera produces less blur and judder. Controller input also reaches a more frequently updated simulation and display pipeline. That combination is especially valuable when an enemy attack must be blocked in a narrow timing window or when you are steering through a crowded environment.

Resolution or Fidelity mode

Resolution/Fidelity mode spends more of the available budget on each individual frame. It may render at a higher internal resolution, preserve more complex geometry, use longer-distance detail, increase shadow quality or enable ray-traced reflections and global-illumination effects. The picture can look cleaner when you stop to inspect a character, skyline or texture.

That additional detail does not automatically mean a game is rendered at a fixed native 4K resolution. Many titles use dynamic resolution and reconstruction in every mode. Unless the developer documents a specific target, treat labels such as “4K” as a description of output or image-quality intent rather than a guarantee that every pixel is rendered natively at 3840 by 2160.

Why frame rate matters in action games

At 30 frames per second, a new frame arrives about every 33.3 milliseconds; at 60 frames per second, the interval is about 16.7 milliseconds. Those figures describe frame cadence, not a guaranteed end-to-end controller latency, because the game engine, display processing and connection add their own delay. They do explain why 60-fps movement generally looks clearer and feels easier to control.

Performance mode is most noticeable during:

  • Close-range combat that requires repeated dodges, parries or counters.
  • Third-person aiming and camera adjustments while tracking a moving target.
  • Fast traversal such as swinging, climbing, gliding or driving.
  • Large camera pans across detailed environments.
  • Games where you frequently correct movement with small analog-stick inputs.

If you mainly walk through environments, watch cutscenes, use photo mode or pause to examine architecture, the responsiveness advantage may matter less than the visual improvements in Fidelity mode. Some players are also more sensitive to 30-fps judder than others; your own perception is a valid deciding factor.

What you see in Resolution/Fidelity mode

The visual difference is game-dependent, but Fidelity mode commonly protects several costly features:

  • Ray tracing: more accurate reflections, shadows or lighting can make glass, water, wet streets and metallic surfaces look more convincing.
  • Geometry and distance: denser foliage, more detailed buildings and longer view distances reduce visible simplification in open areas.
  • Shadows: higher resolution or longer-range shadows can preserve detail around characters and objects.
  • Image reconstruction: a higher internal-resolution target can reduce shimmer on fine lines, hair, foliage and distant architecture.
  • Effects: smoke, particles, volumetric lighting and screen-space effects may be retained at a higher quality.

These features are easiest to appreciate on a large 4K HDR television viewed from a typical living-room distance. On a smaller screen, at a greater distance or with strong motion blur enabled, the difference can be subtle. Conversely, a 30-fps mode can feel noticeably uneven on a display with a fast response time because each frame remains visible longer.

Display requirements: 60Hz, 120Hz, VRR and HDMI

What a 60Hz screen can do

A 60Hz television or monitor can display 30-fps and 60-fps game modes. It cannot present a 120Hz output signal, so a game’s 40-fps mode, 120-fps mode or certain unlocked-frame-rate options may be unavailable or fall back to another setting. A 60Hz screen can still be an excellent match for a conventional Performance-versus-Fidelity choice.

Why 120Hz matters for 40-fps modes

Forty frames per second divides evenly into a 120Hz refresh cycle: each frame can be shown for three refreshes. That produces a smoother result than 30 fps while allowing a game to retain more visual quality than a typical 60-fps Performance mode. It is not the same as 60 fps, but many players find it a useful middle ground. The game must explicitly provide the option, and the display must accept 120Hz.

How VRR changes the decision

Variable refresh rate allows a compatible television or monitor to adjust its refresh timing to the game’s changing frame rate. This can reduce tearing and make an unlocked or fluctuating frame rate appear more consistent. VRR does not create extra performance and cannot turn a 30-fps target into 60 fps; it only helps the display follow the frames the console and game produce.

Cable and console connections

Sony’s guidance says the PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K output at 120Hz. For 4K/120Hz and automatic low-latency connections, use the cable included with the console or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable, and connect through a television or receiver that supports the required bandwidth. An older cable, an intermediate receiver or an HDMI port limited to 60Hz can prevent the console from offering the mode you expect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and review the detected resolution, 120 Hz Output and VRR entries. Set the television to its gaming or low-latency picture preset separately; the console’s output setting cannot override image processing imposed by the display.

How to choose for your play style

Choose Performance when combat is the core experience

Select Performance first if you spend most of your time in fights, stealth encounters that demand quick camera corrections, or traversal sequences where you constantly change direction. The extra motion clarity can make attack animations easier to parse and reduce the feeling that the camera is dragging behind your input.

Choose Fidelity for exploration and visual composition

Fidelity is a sensible choice for slower exploration, environmental storytelling and photo mode. If you routinely stop to inspect distant scenery, notice reflections in wet surfaces or play on a large HDR screen, the additional rendering features may be more valuable than the smoother controls.

Use a 40-fps or VRR option as a compromise

If a game offers a 40-fps mode on a 120Hz display, try it before settling for either extreme. It can preserve many Fidelity features while reducing the judder of 30 fps. An unlocked or VRR mode may also be worthwhile when its frame rate remains near the display’s supported range. Because implementations differ, judge the result during actual combat and traversal rather than only in a static menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider your tolerance for visual artifacts

Performance modes can expose reconstruction shimmer on foliage, hair or thin geometry, while Fidelity modes can expose judder during a rapid pan. Turn the camera in a busy scene, move past fine railings or trees and watch a reflective surface. The artifacts you notice repeatedly should guide your selection more than a mode name.

What the examples show

Horizon Forbidden West on PS5 Pro

Sony’s PS5 Pro materials describe a Pro Performance mode for Horizon Forbidden West that keeps a high frame rate while substantially improving image quality compared with the standard PS5 Performance mode. Guerrilla studio director and art director Jan-Bart van Beek said the Pro presentation can match or surpass the regular PS5 Quality mode while running at 60 frames per second—effectively doubling the frame rate of a 30-fps quality target. This is an example of enhanced hardware narrowing the usual trade-off; it is not evidence that every PS5 game offers the same result.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PS5 Pro

Insomniac core technology director Mike Fitzgerald described the game’s Performance Pro mode as combining the crisp 4K resolution and ray-tracing features associated with Fidelity mode with the 60-fps target associated with Performance mode. The mode is a developer-defined PS5 Pro feature, so a base PS5 owner should not assume that the same combination exists in the standard version.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and other enhanced titles

Sony identifies Fidelity mode as the visual-quality reference in examples including Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The comparison illustrates why labels must be read within each game: one title may reserve ray tracing for Fidelity, while another may offer a separate 40-fps or enhanced Performance option.

PS4 games running on PS5

Selected PS4 games can use the PS5’s Game Boost to provide improved or more stable frame rates. Sony also notes that games with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolutions up to 4K may gain higher fidelity on PS5. These benefits depend on the individual title and its patch or original design; Game Boost is not a guarantee that every PS4 game gains a new Performance/Fidelity menu.

Step-by-step: test both modes properly

  1. Check the game’s mode descriptions. Look for stated frame-rate targets, 40-fps or 120Hz notes, VRR requirements and whether ray tracing is enabled in each option.
  2. Confirm your display path. On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Verify that the expected resolution, 120 Hz Output and VRR capabilities are detected.
  3. Use the same scene for comparison. Load a combat encounter, a traversal route and a detailed outdoor area. A menu or quiet corridor can hide the differences that matter during play.
  4. Test camera movement. Rotate the camera steadily across foliage, railings and building edges, then perform quick turns. Look for judder, shimmer, ghosting and tearing.
  5. Test your normal actions. Parry, aim, dodge and make small analog-stick corrections. Choose the mode that lets you perform these actions with fewer mistakes, not simply the one that looks best in a screenshot.
  6. Recheck after patches. A later update can add a mode, alter dynamic-resolution behavior or change the default. Read the current in-game description after major updates.

Common problems and fixes

The 120Hz or VRR option is missing

Confirm that the display supports the feature, that you are using the correct HDMI input, and that any receiver or soundbar in the chain also supports the required signal. Try the included PS5 cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. If the television reports 60Hz, a 40-fps or 120Hz mode cannot be presented as intended.

The picture looks soft in Performance mode

Dynamic resolution and reconstruction can lower image clarity during demanding scenes. Check whether the game offers a sharper Performance variant, a 40-fps mode or a VRR option. If not, Fidelity may be the better choice for your viewing distance, even if its frame rate is lower.

Fidelity mode feels uneven

Longer frame persistence can make camera pans appear juddery at a 30-fps target. Enable VRR only if the game and display support it, and try the game’s 40-fps option if available. Otherwise, switch to Performance for sections that involve frequent movement and return to Fidelity for exploration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ray tracing appears unchanged

Not every game uses ray tracing in every mode, and some effects are subtle during ordinary play. Read the developer’s description rather than inferring a feature from the mode name. A patch can also change which reflections, shadows or lighting effects are enabled.

Does PS5 Pro eliminate the choice?

No. PS5 Pro can let supported games combine settings that are separated on the base PS5, as the examples above demonstrate. Enhanced modes still depend on a developer patch, and an unpatched or less demanding title may retain the same choices. The console also cannot make a 60Hz display show 120Hz output. Treat PS5 Pro as a way to reduce the compromise in selected games, not as a universal replacement for the Performance-versus-Fidelity decision.

A practical decision rule

  • Start with Performance for a new cinematic action game.
  • Switch to Fidelity when you spend a long session exploring, photographing scenes or admiring environmental detail.
  • Use 40-fps, unlocked or VRR modes when the game offers them and your display supports the necessary refresh rate.
  • On PS5 Pro, test any Pro-specific mode because it may retain Fidelity features at a higher frame rate.
  • Keep the mode that produces fewer distractions during the actions you perform most often.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Performance mode always 60 fps on PS5?

No. Performance is a developer target, not a console-wide specification. A game may target 60 fps, use a variable or unlocked rate, or offer a different enhanced mode. Check the title’s own description and patch notes.

Can I use a 40-fps mode with a 60Hz television?

A 60Hz display cannot present the 120Hz signal normally required for a 40-fps mode. You generally need a compatible 120Hz display, and the game must explicitly support the option.

Does VRR make Fidelity mode run at 60 fps?

No. VRR synchronizes the display to changing frame times and can reduce tearing, but it does not add rendering performance or change a 30-fps target into 60 fps.

Which mode is better for photo mode?

Resolution/Fidelity usually preserves more detail, ray-traced effects and visual effects, making it the stronger choice for composing still images. Some games pause or alter rendering in photo mode, so the result remains title-specific.
