A console that “won’t turn on” can mean three different things: it is completely unresponsive, it is running with no picture, or it begins startup and then stops. Check the power source and the console’s indicator or fan first, then follow the path for your exact symptom. Do not pull a PS5’s AC cord while its indicator is lit or blinking; Sony warns that doing so can corrupt data or damage the console.
Identify what “won’t turn on” actually means
Before trying recovery commands or considering a repair, observe exactly what happens when you press the console’s power button. The distinction determines which steps are safe and useful.

| What you observe | Most useful first path |
|---|---|
| No light, no fan, no sound and no response to the power button | Check the outlet, AC connection and console-side signs of power. Use the manufacturer’s power-troubleshooting route if it remains unresponsive. |
| A light appears or the fan runs, but the television remains blank | Treat it as a display or startup problem, not proof that the console has no power. Check the display chain and, for PS5, consider Safe Mode. |
| The console starts, then shuts down, freezes or never reaches the home screen | Use recovery options only if the console can stay on long enough to reach them. A PS5 can offer storage repair or a system-software update in Safe Mode. |
| The console appears to be waiting in standby | Check the indicator state and press the power button once. Do not disconnect an active PS5. |
These observations do not establish an internal hardware diagnosis. They only prevent you from applying a no-power procedure to a console that is actually running without video output.

Verify the power source
- Confirm the AC cable is fully seated in the console and in a known-working wall outlet or surge protector.
- Test the outlet with another device, or move the console temporarily to an outlet whose operation you have verified.
- Inspect the cable and plugs for cuts, crushed sections, bent contacts, looseness or heat damage. Do not use a visibly damaged cable.
- Remove unnecessary extensions, adapters and switched-off power strips from the test path so there are fewer points of failure.
A replacement AC cable is reasonable only when the existing cable is damaged or clearly suspect. Match the exact console model and electrical region before buying one; an unverified replacement is not evidence that the console itself has failed, and changing the cable will not resolve every no-power fault.

Watch and listen while pressing the button
Press the console’s physical power button once and note any indicator, beep, fan movement or other response. A brief response followed by shutdown is a different symptom from total silence. If the television changes input or displays a signal message, the console may be operating even if its screen remains blank.
Do not repeatedly interrupt an active startup
If a light is on or blinking, give the console time to complete its current operation before disconnecting anything. Abrupt power removal can interrupt storage writes and updates. On PS5, the manufacturer’s warning is especially explicit: disconnect the AC power cord from the electricity supply only when the power indicator is off.
PS5: use the indicator to choose the next step
Sony’s PS5 Quick Start Guide defines the console’s front-light states as follows:
- White: the console is on.
- Orange: the console is in Rest Mode.
- Off: the console is off.
A dark television with a white light means the PS5 has power and is not the same as a completely dead console. An orange light means it is in Rest Mode, so try waking it with the controller or the console button before doing anything more invasive.

If the PS5 has no light or response
- Check the outlet, power strip and both ends of the AC cable using the external checks above.
- Press the console’s power button once and listen for any beep or fan response.
- Do not remove the AC cable if the indicator is solid or blinking. Wait until the indicator is off before disconnecting it.
- Follow Sony’s issue-specific diagnostic at How to troubleshoot PS5 power issues. That route can direct you to PlayStation Repairs when external checks do not restore operation.
Sony’s power-issues page is the appropriate next step for a PS5 that remains completely unresponsive. It is more reliable than guessing at an internal component, because the available repair route and eligibility can depend on the specific unit and region.
If the PS5 turns on but the screen is blank
Keep the console powered and troubleshoot the display path: verify that the television is on the HDMI input used by the PS5, reseat the HDMI cable at both ends, and test the television input with another known-working source if available. These checks address a “turns on but no picture” symptom rather than a no-power failure.
If the console can power on but does not start normally, Sony’s Safe Mode provides controlled recovery options. It is not a solution for a PS5 that cannot power on at all.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEnter PS5 Safe Mode only when the console can reach it
- Turn the PS5 completely off. If it is on, use the normal power command and wait for the indicator to finish turning off.
- Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, which occurs about seven seconds after the first beep.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the controller’s PS button when prompted.
Safe Mode includes options such as Repair Console Storage and Update System Software. Choose the least destructive option that matches the symptom. Reset or reinstall choices can erase user data, so they should not be presented as an early response to a console with no power.

What the PS5 power warning means in practice
Sony states that disconnecting the AC cord while the indicator is on solidly or blinking can cause data loss or corruption and may damage the console. Therefore, do not use “unplug it and see what happens” while the PS5 is active. If you need to remove power for an external check, wait for the indicator to be off first.
Xbox Series X: check power, indicator and fan response
Microsoft’s Xbox Series X Console Safety & Repair Instructions uses a hardware-troubleshooting sequence built around observable signs:
- Connect the console to a power source.
- Press the console’s power button.
- Check whether the power indicator works.
- Check whether the fan operates and whether it makes unusual noises.
Apply those checks without opening the console. A working indicator or fan suggests that the Series X is receiving power, even if the television shows no image. An unusual fan noise is a useful symptom to report to support, not a reason to disassemble the unit immediately.
If the Series X is completely unresponsive
- Verify the outlet and power-strip switch.
- Reseat the AC cable at the console and wall outlet.
- Inspect the cable for physical damage and remove unnecessary adapters from the test path.
- Press the power button and observe the indicator and fan.
If there is still no response, use Microsoft’s Series X service guidance and the Xbox Support route it references for general device troubleshooting. The service material does not establish that a particular internal part is defective, so avoid claims about a failed power supply or a guaranteed repair.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If the Series X powers on but shows no picture
Keep the distinction clear: a running fan or illuminated indicator means the console is not in the same state as a dead unit. Check the television input and HDMI connections, then test the display path with another source or cable if one is available. Report the indicator and fan behavior when contacting support; those observations help support separate power faults from video-output or startup faults.
Check software before hardware repair
Microsoft’s service guidance says that ensuring the device is fully up to date is important because a software update may resolve the issue before hardware repair is attempted. If the console can remain on long enough to reach its menus, install any available system update through the normal Xbox interface before pursuing disassembly or a repair procedure. If it cannot stay on, do not force an update sequence that the console cannot complete; move to Xbox Support instead.
The current consumer support material available for this topic does not establish a precise universal power-cycle wait interval or button sequence. Do not treat an unofficial timing or combination as an official Xbox instruction.
When the symptom changes during troubleshooting
It powers on after you reseat the cable
Do not assume the cable was the root cause merely because reseating changed the behavior. Check whether the plug remains secure, watch the indicator through a normal startup and confirm that the console reaches the home screen. If the problem returns, document the exact sequence and contact the manufacturer rather than repeatedly flexing or replacing cables without evidence.

It starts and then shuts down
Record how far startup gets, whether the indicator changes, whether the fan spins, and whether any message appears on the screen. For PS5, Safe Mode is available only if the console can stay powered long enough to enter it; its storage-repair and software-update options are intended for startup problems, not total loss of power. For Xbox Series X, report the indicator and fan behavior to Xbox Support and follow the current device-specific instructions.
The screen remains blank but the console is clearly active
Use the display branch: confirm the TV input, reseat HDMI, and test the display chain. A blank screen alone does not prove that the console has no power. If a PS5 can enter Safe Mode, use that environment to distinguish a startup problem from a normal-interface display problem; if it cannot, use Sony’s power diagnostic or Xbox Support according to the console.
What not to do
- Do not pull a PS5’s AC cord while its indicator is solid or blinking.
- Do not open either console as an early troubleshooting step. The supplied manufacturer guidance supports external checks and support escalation, not an internal diagnosis for your particular unit.
- Do not use a damaged or mismatched replacement cable. Verify the model and region first.
- Do not erase storage or reinstall PS5 system software before confirming that the console can power on and that less destructive Safe Mode options are unsuitable.
- Do not call a console “dead” solely because the television is blank; first check the indicator, fan and display path.
- Do not promise that a repair will be covered by warranty. Coverage and eligibility depend on the unit and region.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Escalate when the console remains unresponsive after the outlet, cable and button checks; when it repeatedly shuts down; when the fan makes unusual noises; or when the display path has been checked but the console cannot complete startup. Have the following information ready:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Console model and region.
- Whether the power indicator is off, lit or blinking, and its color where applicable.
- Whether the fan runs and whether it makes unusual sounds.
- Whether the television shows a signal, a blank screen or an error message.
- What changed immediately before the failure, such as a power interruption, update or cable move.
- Which outlet, cable and display checks you completed.
For PS5, begin with Sony’s PS5 power-issues troubleshooting page, which can route you to PlayStation Repairs. For Xbox Series X, use Xbox Support through the path referenced in Microsoft’s Series X service instructions. Support can determine whether the next step is software recovery, service, or a repair option for your region.
PS5 and Xbox Series X: the practical difference in first steps
| Question | PS5 | Xbox Series X |
|---|---|---|
| What to observe first | Indicator color/state, beep, fan and picture. | Power indicator, fan operation and unusual fan noise. |
| Indicator information documented in the supplied manufacturer material | White means on; orange means Rest Mode; off means off. | Service guidance calls for checking whether the indicator works; no equivalent color table is established here. |
| If it powers on without a picture | Check the HDMI/display path; Safe Mode may help if the console can enter it. | Check the HDMI/display path and report power/fan behavior to support. |
| Recovery route | Safe Mode: hold the power button until the second beep, connect the controller by USB, press PS; options include storage repair and system-software update. | Use current Xbox Support guidance; do not rely on an unverified power-cycle interval. |
| Manufacturer escalation | Sony’s power diagnostic and PlayStation Repairs. | Xbox Support, as referenced by Microsoft’s service guidance. |
The shared principle is to identify observable power before attempting recovery. The model-specific difference is that Sony documents a Safe Mode sequence and indicator colors, while Microsoft’s cited service material emphasizes power, indicator and fan checks plus updating before hardware repair.
