1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShort answer: PS4 homebrew support is more established, but only on specific firmware versions documented by a particular project. The GoldHEN release page consulted for this guide lists PS4 support for 5.05, 6.71/6.72, 9.00, 9.60, 10.00/10.01 and 11.00. PS5 support is more fragmented: the Relapse-Exploit README lists firmware 7.00 through 13.60, while an older ps5-hen project documents homebrew and PS4 FPKG support only through 4.51, with important stability limits. Neither range means that every payload, game or feature works on every listed console.
Sony’s statement that the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games run on PS5 is an official backward-compatibility claim for ordinary consoles. It does not demonstrate that a jailbreak works, that unofficial packages run, or that a PS5 payload supports a particular game. Check the exact installed firmware first, then match it to the exploit and payload documentation for your model and intended use.

What “PS4 jailbreak” and “PS5 jailbreak” actually describe
“Jailbreak” is used as a shorthand for several separate layers of access. Treating them as one feature leads to bad upgrade decisions and false compatibility expectations.
Entry exploit
An entry exploit is the method that reaches a vulnerable state on a particular firmware. A project may list a broad firmware range for its exploit, but that list does not by itself prove that a homebrew enabler, package installer or game payload is available at every version.

Kernel-level access and a homebrew enabler
After an entry point, a project may obtain deeper system access and load a homebrew enabler. Homebrew support means that independently developed applications can run in the environment documented by that project. It does not mean that all applications have been tested on every firmware, or that the modification survives a reboot.
Payloads and package support
A payload is a specific function loaded after the exploit. Examples include a homebrew enabler, remote package installation or support for PS4-format packages on a PS5. Payload support is narrower than exploit support. A console can fall inside an exploit’s stated range while lacking a stable payload for the task you want.
Official backward compatibility
Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 compatibility is a separate, supported feature of an unmodified console. It uses Sony’s retail software path and should not be used as evidence that an unofficial exploit or package works.

The following ranges are project-specific documentation consulted in October 2026. Firmware availability, exploit behavior and payload stability can change, so use the project’s current release notes before acting.
| Platform or project | Firmware stated in the documentation | What the documentation claims | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 GoldHEN release page | 5.05; 6.71/6.72; 9.00; 9.60; 10.00/10.01; 11.00 | Homebrew enabling, remote package installation, rest mode, external HDD support and a firmware-update block | This is the listed support for that GoldHEN release page, not a claim that every PS4 firmware is jailbreakable or that every feature is equally reliable on every version. |
| PS5 Relapse-Exploit README | 7.00 through 13.60 | An exploit range for the Relapse project | The range does not guarantee an identical homebrew enabler, package support, game compatibility or persistence across all versions. |
| PS5 ps5-hen README | Through 4.51 | Homebrew and PS4 FPKG support | The README records crashes with multiple FPKGs and no rest-mode support. It is a separate, older project and should not be merged with Relapse’s range. |
The apparent gap between the PS5 projects is not a contradiction. They document different projects, payloads and firmware ceilings. A PS5 on 4.51 may fit the older HEN documentation but not the Relapse range; a PS5 on 10.00 may fit Relapse’s exploit list without inheriting the older HEN project’s PS4 FPKG support.
How to check the firmware before you compare anything
Record the installed system-software version before connecting the console to an update or making a compatibility decision. Sony’s official paths are:
- PS5: open Settings, choose System, choose System Software, then open Console Information. Write down the exact version.
- PS4: open Settings, choose System, then choose System Information. Record the exact version, including both digits when shown.
- Note the console model, whether an update is already downloading, and which game or homebrew function you need. A firmware number without the intended payload is not enough to select a path.
Do not infer a version from the purchase date, box label or a game’s minimum requirement. The installed system software shown in the console menus is the value that determines which project documentation applies.
Why the PS4 homebrew picture is more mature
PS4 users have a longer-established homebrew-enabler ecosystem. The GoldHEN release page lists several separated firmware targets rather than one universal jailbreak. It also documents features that matter in daily use:
- Homebrew enabling: loading independently developed applications in the supported environment.
- Remote package installation: sending supported packages to the console over a network rather than relying only on local media.
- Rest mode: listed as a feature for that release, subject to the release’s own firmware and stability conditions.
- External HDD support: using compatible external storage in the roles documented by the project.
- Firmware-update block: a project feature intended to help prevent an unwanted system update; it is not a substitute for checking the console’s update settings and network behavior.
These features should be read as a checklist for the specific GoldHEN release, not as a promise that every homebrew application works or that a session is permanent. A reboot, a failed exploit attempt or a system update can change the state of the console. Keep the installed version recorded and verify the exact release instructions each time the project changes.

Why PS5 support must be evaluated payload by payload
PS5 documentation currently splits into at least two materially different tracks in the sources used here.
Relapse-Exploit: broad stated range, separate payload questions
The Relapse-Exploit README lists PS5 firmware 7.00 through 13.60. That is useful for identifying consoles that fall inside the project’s stated exploit range. It is not a statement that all those versions have the same kernel behavior, homebrew catalog, package format support or game compatibility. Before updating, look for documentation for the exact payload you intend to load, not merely the exploit’s headline range.
ps5-hen: earlier ceiling with documented limitations
The ps5-hen README documents homebrew and PS4 FPKG support through firmware 4.51. It also records crashes when multiple FPKGs are used and says that rest mode is not supported. Those limitations affect practical ownership: a feature that works for one package may fail when several are involved, and rest mode cannot be treated as a safe way to preserve a modified session.
Do not combine the two projects into a single “PS5 jailbreak up to 13.60 with PS4 package support” claim. The sources do not establish that. They establish separate project ranges and separate feature sets.
Official PS4 game compatibility on PS5
Sony says the “overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles.” This is the relevant answer when you are asking whether a retail PS4 title can run on a normal PS5. Sony also warns that some games may display errors or lose functionality, so “playable” does not mean identical performance or every online and peripheral feature.
Sony identifies compatible USB storage as one way to access PS4 games and game data on PS5. That supports using a compatible external USB storage device for PS4 content, but it does not mean every drive works for every storage role, nor that external storage expands every category of PS5 internal storage. Check the console’s format and compatibility requirements before moving a library.

- It does not show that a PS5 exploit or payload works on your firmware.
- It does not validate an unofficial PS4 package on a PS5.
- It does not guarantee that a game’s latest patch runs in a modified environment.
- It does not promise that errors, missing functions or online requirements disappear after modification.
Keep the two questions separate: “Will Sony’s PS5 software run this PS4 game?” and “Will a particular unofficial payload load and run a package on this firmware?” They require different evidence.
Game updates can change the firmware decision
Remaining on a firmware inside a documented exploit range can preserve options, while updating may add support for a newly released game or patch. The trade-off is title-specific. Tom’s Hardware reported on September 30, 2026, that some game updates could require firmware newer than Relapse’s stated ceiling. That report concerns particular updates; it is not evidence that every game requires a newer version.
Before updating, identify the exact game, edition, disc or digital version, and patch you need. Then check whether the required system software exceeds the ceiling of the exploit and payload you intend to use. A general “latest games need the latest firmware” assumption is too broad, but so is assuming that every update remains compatible with an older modified system.

A decision workflow: stay, update or use an unmodified console
- Write down the installed firmware. Use the PS5 or PS4 menu path above and preserve the exact value.
- Define the goal. Choose one primary objective: homebrew applications, remote package installation, PS4 FPKG support on a PS5, or ordinary retail backward compatibility.
- Match the goal to a project. For PS4, compare the version with GoldHEN’s listed targets. For PS5, determine whether the relevant documentation is Relapse-Exploit, ps5-hen or another project, and read the payload section rather than only the exploit range.
- Check limitations. Look specifically for rest-mode behavior, package-count crashes, external-storage requirements and whether the function is experimental or release-specific.
- Check the game requirement. If a retail game or patch is the priority, verify its required firmware and whether updating would move the console beyond the project’s documented ceiling.
- Choose the least irreversible option. If homebrew is the priority, avoid an update that is known to leave the documented range. If a required game update is the priority, an unmodified console or a separate console may be more practical than sacrificing a firmware position.
- Re-check after every system or game update. Firmware support and payload stability are volatile. A result that was documented for one release should not be assumed for the next.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling every version in a range “jailbreakable”
A range is a project’s stated support boundary. It does not prove equal success rates, persistence or payload availability at every intermediate version. Name the project and firmware together.
Confusing exploit access with a homebrew feature
An exploit can provide an entry point while a separate payload supplies homebrew, package installation or FPKG handling. Confirm both layers before promising a function.
Assuming PS4 and PS5 methods are interchangeable
They are different consoles with different project documentation. GoldHEN’s PS4 feature list cannot be transferred to a PS5, and the PS5 projects’ ranges cannot be used to infer PS4 support.
Using official compatibility as proof of unofficial compatibility
Sony’s 4,000-plus figure describes retail PS4 games on PS5. It says nothing about unofficial packages, exploit reliability or a modified console’s ability to run a particular title.
Updating before recording the version and checking the payload
An update can move a console outside the range you intended to preserve. Record the version, identify the game or homebrew requirement, and compare the exact numbers before accepting an update.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Expecting rest mode to preserve every modified session
GoldHEN lists rest mode as a feature for the consulted PS4 release, while the ps5-hen README explicitly says rest mode is unsupported. Treat rest-mode behavior as project-specific rather than a console-wide property.
Assuming external storage has one universal role
Sony documents compatible USB storage for accessing PS4 games and data on PS5, and GoldHEN lists external HDD support on PS4. Neither statement means that any drive is suitable for every storage task. Verify compatibility, formatting and the intended console role.
Practical comparison by reader goal
| Your priority | What the evidence supports | What you still must verify |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 homebrew | GoldHEN’s consulted release page lists several supported PS4 firmware targets and homebrew-enabling features. | The exact installed version, release build, payload behavior and whether your desired application works on it. |
| PS5 homebrew | Relapse-Exploit lists 7.00–13.60; ps5-hen documents homebrew through 4.51. | Which project applies, whether a compatible payload exists for the version, and known stability limits. |
| PS4 FPKG on PS5 | ps5-hen documents this through 4.51. | Multiple-FPKG crash behavior, package-specific compatibility and the absence of rest-mode support. |
| Retail PS4 games on PS5 | Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable. | Whether the specific title has errors, missing functionality, peripheral requirements or an update that needs newer firmware. |
| Newest game patches | Some updates may require firmware newer than Relapse’s stated ceiling, according to September 30, 2026 reporting. | The exact title, edition and patch; do not generalize one reported requirement to every game. |
What to verify before proceeding
- Exact installed firmware from the console’s system-information screen.
- Project name and release date, not just a social-media claim that a console is “jailbroken.”
- Whether the documentation covers an exploit, a homebrew enabler, a package format or all three.
- Known limitations, including crashes, rest-mode support and external-storage requirements.
- The game’s retail compatibility status and the firmware required by its desired update.
- A recovery plan if the exploit session ends after reboot or an update changes the system state.
The safest interpretation is narrow: a documented firmware range tells you where a particular project says its code can operate. It does not grant universal homebrew, package or game support. PS4 offers the more established homebrew path in the documented material, while PS5 requires a stricter project-and-payload match. For ordinary PS4 games, rely on Sony’s compatibility guidance; for unofficial features, rely only on the documentation for the exact firmware, payload and package you intend to use.
