Short answer: A PS5 is not “jailbreakable” merely because it is an older console. Eligibility depends on the exact system-software version installed and on whether a complete, usable exploit chain exists for that version. As of October 13, 2026, secondary reporting says the Relapse release works through firmware 13.6, but that is a dated community-scene report—not a Sony compatibility promise and not a guarantee for every console or feature.
Keeping an exploitable firmware can mean giving up newer games, online services, security fixes and straightforward warranty support. Updating can close an exploit path, but Sony’s documents do not establish that every update removes every exploit. Decide only after recording your exact version, hardware situation and priorities.

What “PS5 jailbreak” means in practice
In ordinary usage, “jailbreak” means obtaining software execution outside Sony’s approved system-software rules. That phrase hides several different achievements. A browser or kernel vulnerability may provide an entry point, while a separate chain may be needed to defeat privilege boundaries, load homebrew, run unsigned code or alter system behavior. One stage does not prove that all of the others work.

Nor does finding a vulnerability mean that a permanent jailbreak, homebrew support, copied-game support or online functionality follows from it. Capabilities can differ by firmware, hardware revision and the quality of the implementation.

Which PS5 firmware versions are reportedly covered?
Relapse: a report through firmware 13.6
An Ars Technica report published around late September 2026 describes a release called Relapse as working through firmware 13.6, which the report identifies as released in July 2026. This is the newest specific ceiling surfaced for this subject, but it remains secondary reporting. It does not establish support for every PS5 model, every regional build, every feature or future revisions of the software. Verify the exact version and the documented path before making any decision based on that claim.
The same report notes a practical trade-off: games can require a newer firmware than the version retained for exploit compatibility. A console that remains on an eligible version may therefore lose access to newer releases even if the exploit itself works.

An experimental GitHub project documents a WebKit/kernel exploit for firmware up to 4.51. Its own description says the exploit alone cannot patch kernel space or provide homebrew because hypervisor enforcement remains in the way. That is a useful example of why “an exploit exists” and “a full jailbreak with a particular feature works” are different statements. The project is neither an official authority nor a universal compatibility matrix.
Why community tables can be wrong tomorrow
Community setup documentation explicitly warns that its firmware table is a moving snapshot governed by public exploits and firmware changes. Reports can lag behind a new Sony release, omit a hardware revision or describe a proof of concept that is impractical for normal use. No primary-source, all-model, all-capability matrix has been established here. If a claim does not name a firmware number and a path, regard it as unverified.
How to check the exact firmware on your console
Do this before connecting a console to an update prompt or relying on an online claim:
- Open Settings on the PS5 home screen.
- Choose System, then System Software.
- Open Console Information and record the complete System Software Version.
- Write down whether the console is a launch-era or later hardware revision, and whether it has already been modified, opened or serviced.
- Compare that exact version with a current, named exploit report. Do not substitute a nearby version, a marketing label or the console’s purchase date.
Keep a photograph or written record of the version. Automatic-update settings, a game disc and a system prompt can all change the software later. This check only identifies your starting point; it does not prove that a working jailbreak or a desired homebrew feature is available.

Should you update a PS5 that might be exploitable?
Updating is a trade-off, not an automatic “good” or “bad” choice. Use the factors below before accepting an update.
| Decision factor | Keeping an older firmware | Updating through Sony’s channel |
|---|---|---|
| Reported exploit eligibility | May preserve eligibility if the exact version is covered by a documented path; no guarantee of a complete jailbreak. | May move the console outside a reported path. Sony’s documents do not prove that every update removes every exploit. |
| New games and patches | A game may refuse to run when it requires a later system version. | Improves the chance of meeting current game and patch requirements. |
| PlayStation online services | Older software may lose service compatibility or be refused by service checks. | Provides the normal route to current service and security requirements, subject to Sony’s account and device rules. |
| Security and features | Misses later security fixes and system changes. | Receives official fixes and features, while possibly adding checks intended to prevent unauthorized software or hardware. |
| Warranty and repairs | Modification or unauthorized software can create warranty and service risk. | An unmodified system on official software is the least complicated position for support, though warranty terms still apply. |
Sony’s US system-software licence tells users to install the most current system software as soon as reasonably possible. It also says updates may include changes designed to prevent unauthorized software or hardware. That language permits anti-circumvention changes, but it does not establish that every update inevitably eliminates every exploit.
The practical rule is simple: if access to current games, online play, security fixes or support matters more than a speculative exploit, update normally. If you are considering retaining an older version, accept that the decision can restrict games and services and that no community report guarantees a result.
Can you update after a jailbreak?
A console that has been modified may still display an update option, but the outcome is not predictable from the word “jailbreak” alone. An official update can overwrite modified components, disable an entry point, expose an unsupported modification or leave the system in a state that needs recovery. Sony’s support notice warns that unofficial update data or methods, and a console altered or modified in any way, can keep the console from operating properly or from accepting an official update.
Do not assume that an update is reversible. Sony does not provide a consumer downgrade promise, and the licence expressly contemplates updates or devices intended to discontinue unauthorized use. A downgrade claim needs its own, version-specific evidence; it should never be inferred from the existence of an older exploit.
If the console becomes unusable
Use Sony’s current recovery instructions rather than an unofficial image. Sony provides an official USB reinstallation route, but the required download, file name, folder structure and button sequence can change. Follow the support page for your region exactly and understand that a reinstallation can erase user data. If the console has been modified, Sony warns that normal update acceptance, operation and repair eligibility may be affected.
Will Sony ban your PSN account or PS5?
There is no evidence that every jailbreak automatically produces a ban. Sony’s US documents instead give it discretion to respond when it determines that a user violated the system-software agreement. The listed remedies include disabling some or all system-software access, disabling use of the PS5 online or offline, ending access to PlayStation services, denying warranty or repair services, applying mandatory updates or other devices intended to stop unauthorized use, and taking other reasonable remedial action.

Those are contractual powers, not a prediction that every modified console will receive every sanction. Enforcement can depend on what Sony detects, how the system is used and which agreement applies in the user’s territory.
Account action versus device suspension
| Action | What it affects | What the terms establish |
|---|---|---|
| Account suspension | The identified PlayStation account and its ability to use services. | Service access can be restricted under the applicable terms; the documents do not make a jailbreak-triggered suspension automatic. |
| Device suspension | The specific PS5, regardless of which account is used on it. | The US Terms of Service say a suspended device cannot use PlayStation services with any account, play games or modes requiring online access, or access content purchased from PlayStation Store on that console. |
A device suspension is therefore broader than an account action. Do not test an uncertain modification on a console that contains purchases or online access you cannot afford to lose. Also remember that a console can have service problems without a formal suspension; an unsupported firmware state may simply fail a compatibility or update check.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does jailbreaking void the PS5 warranty?
For the United States, Sony’s hardware warranty says it may void coverage if it reasonably believes the console was used in a way that violates a separate system-software or game-software agreement. The warranty also lists exclusions involving modification, misuse, unauthorized service and opening the product. Sony’s update help separately warns that unofficial update files or methods, and a modified console, can affect warranty and repair service.
That is a US policy statement, not universal legal advice. Warranty rights, statutory guarantees and permitted repair practices differ by country. Read the warranty supplied for your territory and the software agreement accepted on your console. Even where a local law limits a blanket voiding clause, proving that a fault is unrelated to an alteration can still be difficult.
What to document before requesting service
- Keep the purchase receipt, serial number and proof of region.
- Describe the actual fault accurately; do not send unofficial files or instructions to support staff.
- Understand that restoring official software does not guarantee that Sony will accept a modified console under warranty.
- Back up saves and captures before any recovery attempt, because reinstallation may erase data.
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “My model is old, so it must be jailbreakable.” Age is not a substitute for an exact firmware number and exploit path.
- “A WebKit exploit means homebrew is ready.” Additional kernel, hypervisor and payload limitations may remain.
- “The latest table online is permanent.” Community tables are snapshots that can become stale after a Sony update or a new discovery.
- “Updating always destroys the exploit.” The available Sony wording permits anti-unauthorized changes but does not prove that every update removes every path.
- “A ban is guaranteed.” Sony’s terms list possible remedies and device consequences; they do not establish an automatic outcome for every modification.
- “A factory reset makes the warranty risk disappear.” Resetting data does not erase the history of opening, modifying or using unauthorized software, and Sony’s service decision remains discretionary.
A cautious eligibility and risk checklist
- Record the version: capture the complete System Software Version and hardware details.
- Identify the claim: require a named exploit path, supported firmware range and stated capabilities.
- Check the date: give greater weight to reports close to your decision; the Relapse ceiling reported in September 2026 can change.
- List what you would lose: newer games, patches, online-required modes, Store access, security updates and uncomplicated support.
- Separate official policy from community claims: Sony’s licence, support notice, warranty and Terms of Service govern Sony’s response; community documentation does not override them.
- Protect data: back up saves and captures before any software change or recovery.
- Choose deliberately: if the costs of losing online services, purchases or warranty support are unacceptable, do not modify the console.
What is and is not established as of October 13, 2026
Established: firmware version is a gating condition; a late-September 2026 secondary report places Relapse’s reported ceiling at 13.6; an experimental project describes a WebKit/kernel exploit up to 4.51 but says it does not by itself deliver kernel patching or homebrew; Sony requires current official software in its US licence and warns that unauthorized methods or modifications can impair operation and service; Sony’s US terms describe both account-related remedies and broad device-suspension consequences; and the US warranty allows denial or voiding in circumstances involving agreement violations and modification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNot established: a universal firmware matrix covering every PS5 revision, a guarantee that any particular console can be fully jailbroken, a guaranteed downgrade route, an automatic ban for every user, or a jurisdiction-independent answer about warranty rights. Those limits are why an exact-version check and a clear tolerance for lost services matter more than a headline claiming that “PS5 jailbreak” support is universal.
