A failed PS5 jailbreak attempt and a failed official system update are different problems. First write down the console model family, exact system-software version, and symptom: browser failure, freeze, restart, error screen, Safe Mode loop, or update error. Exploit behavior is version-specific and can change quickly. Recover the console with Sony’s supported tools; do not install unofficial firmware, and do not reset or reinstall until you understand the data-loss consequence.
Why did my PS5 jailbreak fail?
There is no single, verified cause that explains every failed jailbreak. The result depends on the console’s firmware, the exploit chain being attempted, browser state, timing, and whether the console crashed before or during a kernel-stage operation. A console that freezes after an attempt may simply need ordinary PS5 recovery rather than another exploit tweak.

The most current reporting available for this topic is a PSN.GG report dated September 29, 2026. It describes a “Relapse” exploit as applying to firmware 7.00 through 13.60, requiring the process to be rerun after a reboot (tethered), and sometimes needing several browser-stage attempts. The report also says its kernel stage can hang or crash and warns of possible system failure, data loss, and account-ban consequences. Those are claims from secondary reporting, not Sony guidance, and they do not diagnose an individual console or establish a success rate.
Firmware mismatch
Exploit compatibility is tied to the exact system-software build, not merely to the fact that a console is a “PS5.” Record the version shown in the console’s system information before attempting anything else. A guide written for a different build can fail at the browser stage, stop at a kernel stage, or leave the console needing recovery.

Browser-stage instability
According to the September 29 PSN.GG report, the described exploit may require multiple browser attempts. A failed page load, a stalled payload, or a browser restart is not proof that the console is permanently damaged. Repeating attempts after a crash, however, can make it harder to identify whether the underlying problem is the exploit or ordinary system instability.
Kernel-stage hang or crash
The same report says the kernel stage may hang or crash. At that point, use the visible symptom to choose a supported recovery path. Do not assume that a freeze proves a particular exploit component is defective, and do not claim that reinstalling will create a downgrade or restore a jailbreak-compatible build.
Tethered behavior
PSN.GG describes Relapse as tethered, meaning the process must be run again after a reboot. That is different from a failed installation: a restart can remove the temporary state without indicating that the hardware is broken.
What the evidence does not establish
- There is no substantiated universal failure percentage or success rate.
- The available reporting does not provide a complete cause tree or a reliable fix for a specific console.
- Community anecdotes are not a substitute for Sony’s recovery instructions.
- No supported firmware-downgrade procedure is established by the sources reviewed.
What to record before choosing a recovery step
Write down these details while they are still available. They prevent an exploit problem from being confused with an update or storage problem.
- Model family: note the PS5 model information shown in the system menus or on the console label.
- System software: record the complete version number, including any sub-version shown by the console.
- Last action: distinguish a browser payload attempt from an official Sony update, USB update, or reset.
- Exact symptom: browser error, frozen screen, automatic restart, error code, black screen, Safe Mode loop, or failure to recognize update media.
- Data status: whether the home screen still loads and whether saves or captures are accessible.
Do not update merely to make an exploit work. An official update can change the firmware version that an exploit requires, while an unofficial file or modified-console method can create additional operational and service risks.
My PS5 froze after a jailbreak attempt—what should I do?
If the console still reaches the home screen
Stop the exploit attempt and test ordinary console functions. If the console is stable, copy important saves and captures to the storage or cloud option available to your account before doing anything destructive. If the problem is an actual official update error, follow Sony’s normal update troubleshooting route: inspect the displayed error, retry as instructed, and move to Sony’s PC/Mac USB procedure after repeated download failures. A jailbreak freeze by itself is not a reason to install an update.
If the console will not reach the home screen
Use Safe Mode. Fully turn the PS5 off; if it is unresponsive, hold the power button until it shuts down. Then hold the power button again and release it after the second beep. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. This is Sony’s documented Safe Mode entry sequence.
Safe Mode options have different consequences. Choose the least destructive option that matches the symptom.

| Safe Mode option | When it fits | Data consequence | Uses official Sony software? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repair Console Storage | Startup or storage-related problems | Sony documents this option as not erasing data | Yes |
| Clear Cache | System-feature or temporary performance problems | Not described as a user-data reset; it clears temporary system data | Yes |
| Rebuild Database | Organization, indexing, or performance issues | Not a factory reset, but allow the process to finish without powering off | Yes |
| Update System Software | Installing an official current update from network or USB | Not presented as a user-data wipe, but follow the on-screen warning | Yes |
| Reset PS5 | Last-resort software reset | Deletes user data | Yes |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Last-resort complete reinstallation | Deletes all user data and removes the system software | Yes |
Repair Console Storage is the specifically documented non-erasing choice. Clear Cache and Rebuild Database are separate choices; selecting one does not silently perform the other. Read each confirmation screen before proceeding.
How do I get my PS5 out of Safe Mode?
Try a normal restart first
- Connect the controller directly to the PS5 with a USB data cable, not a charge-only cable.
- Press the PS button and choose the restart option shown in Safe Mode.
- Allow the console to boot completely. Do not disconnect power while storage repair, database rebuilding, or an update is running.
If it returns to Safe Mode
- Power the console off and enter Safe Mode again using the second-beep procedure.
- For a startup or storage symptom, select Repair Console Storage. Sony states that this option does not erase data.
- For system-feature or performance symptoms, consider Clear Cache or Rebuild Database as separate operations.
- If the console is asking for an update, use only Sony’s current official update instructions and the exact file for the operation.
A repeated Safe Mode loop after these supported steps is a repair issue, not evidence that another jailbreak attempt is safe. Sony directs users whose Safe Mode recovery does not work to PlayStation Repairs.
How to perform an official PS5 USB update
Use this route for a genuine update problem or when Sony’s Safe Mode instructions specifically call for USB media. It is not a jailbreak procedure and is not a downgrade method.

Prepare the USB drive
- Format the drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- At the root of the drive, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside it, create a folder named
UPDATE. - Download Sony’s current official update file and save it as
PS5UPDATE.PUPinsidePS5/UPDATE. - Check the spelling and uppercase letters. A renamed, nested, or differently capitalized file may not be recognized.
The recovery file and the ordinary update file are not interchangeable by implication. Select the file and Safe Mode operation Sony specifies for the task shown on the support page; do not substitute one because the filenames look similar.
Install from Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 fully off.
- Hold the power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller by USB and press the PS button.
- Choose Update System Software, then choose the USB-storage option when prompted.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and leave the console connected to power until the process completes.
If the console does not see the file, check the drive format, folder hierarchy, filename, and whether the download completed. Re-download the official file rather than using a copy from an unofficial source.
A basic FAT32- or exFAT-compatible USB flash drive is the only physical accessory needed for this supported procedure. It enables Sony’s update media; it is not a jailbreak tool and cannot guarantee that an exploit failure will be fixed. Download the correct current file directly from Sony before copying it.
Sony warns: “Don’t download or install the update using data other than the official update file provided online by Sony Interactive Entertainment.” Sony also warns that unofficial update data or methods, and use of a modified console, may cause improper operation and affect warranty or repair services.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon USB-update mistakes
- Wrong format: a drive using a format other than FAT32 or exFAT may not be accepted.
- Wrong nesting: the path must be the USB root, then
PS5, thenUPDATE; do not place another folder abovePS5. - Wrong capitalization: use the exact uppercase names
PS5,UPDATE, andPS5UPDATE.PUP. - Wrong package: an ordinary update file and a reinstallation/recovery file serve different Safe Mode operations. Follow Sony’s page for the option displayed.
- Interrupted transfer: an incomplete download can look like an unsupported file. Download it again from Sony.
- Power interruption: do not remove the drive or unplug the console during an update, repair, or database rebuild.
These checks address file recognition and installation errors. They do not make an incompatible exploit work, and changing USB media cannot turn a supported update into a downgrade.

Will reinstalling PS5 software delete my data?
Yes. Treat Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as destructive. Sony says it deletes all PS5 data and removes the system software. The ordinary Reset PS5 option also deletes user data. Back up saves, captures, and other files first if the console still allows access.
Do not choose reinstallation simply because an exploit failed. It is appropriate only when Sony’s recovery path calls for a complete reinstall and you accept the data loss. The available sources do not establish a supported way to downgrade firmware through reinstalling.
Back up before destructive recovery
- If the home screen works, copy critical saves and captures using the backup options available to your console and account.
- Record any authenticator, account-recovery, or license details you may need after setup.
- Remove external storage only after the console is shut down normally; do not interrupt a repair or update in progress.
- Confirm that you understand the confirmation screen before selecting either reset option.
Recovery choices by symptom
| Symptom | First action | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Browser payload fails but the home screen works | Stop attempts, record firmware and symptom, back up accessible data, and use normal console troubleshooting only if a genuine system error exists. | Updating solely to chase exploit compatibility. |
| Console freezes or restarts after an attempt | Power down safely; if it will not boot, enter Safe Mode and begin with the least destructive applicable option. | Repeated force-offs while storage repair or database rebuilding is running. |
| Official update repeatedly fails to download | Inspect the update error, retry, then use Sony’s official PC/Mac USB instructions. | Unofficial update packages or modified files. |
| USB update is not recognized | Verify FAT32/exFAT, PS5/UPDATE, exact PS5UPDATE.PUP spelling, and the correct official file. |
Putting the file in a different folder or using the recovery file for an ordinary update. |
| Safe Mode loop continues | Try Repair Console Storage, then the appropriate cache/database or official update option; contact PlayStation Repairs if recovery fails. | Jumping straight to reinstall without a backup and confirmation of data loss. |
| Reinstallation is offered | Back up first and proceed only if a complete reinstall is necessary. | Assuming reinstall will downgrade firmware or restore a jailbreak. |
How to separate an exploit failure from an update failure
Timeline is the simplest diagnostic aid. If the console failed immediately after loading a browser payload, record that as an exploit-related event and avoid assuming the system software itself is corrupted. If the console displayed an official update error before any exploit activity, follow Sony’s update troubleshooting and USB instructions instead. If both happened, write down the order: an update may have changed the firmware, while a later browser crash may be a separate event.
The recovery choice should follow the symptom, not the hoped-for exploit result. A home screen that still loads favors backup and observation. A boot failure favors Safe Mode. A file-recognition problem favors checking the USB format, path, and filename. A persistent loop after supported steps favors repair service. None of those symptoms, by itself, proves that a particular exploit component is responsible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to stop troubleshooting and seek repair
Use PlayStation Repairs when the console cannot complete supported Safe Mode recovery, will not accept the correct official update media, repeatedly returns to Safe Mode, or shows persistent hardware-like symptoms such as immediate shutdowns or storage errors. Provide the model, firmware version, exact error code, and the sequence of events. Mention whether the last operation was an official update or an exploit attempt so the technician can distinguish the two.
Do not send the console an unofficial firmware file while waiting for service. Sony’s warning about modified consoles and unofficial update data applies even when the intent is recovery, and it may affect repair or warranty handling.
Safe decision checklist
- Have I recorded the complete system-software version and model family?
- Does the console reach the home screen, or am I limited to Safe Mode?
- Was the failure an exploit attempt, an official update, or both?
- Have I identified the exact symptom instead of assuming a cause?
- Have I backed up data before any reset or reinstall?
- Am I using only Sony’s current official update file and instructions?
- Have I read whether the selected option erases data?
- If supported recovery failed, have I stopped and contacted PlayStation Repairs?
What the September 2026 exploit report means for troubleshooting
The PSN.GG report dated September 29, 2026 is useful for setting expectations, not for replacing console support documentation. It reports Relapse coverage for firmware 7.00–13.60, tethered operation, possible browser retries, and kernel-stage hangs or crashes. It also raises possible data-loss and account-ban consequences. Those details may become outdated as firmware and exploit conditions change, and they do not prove that every freeze, restart, or failed browser page has the same cause.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The practical response is symptom-led recovery: preserve the firmware record, distinguish an official update error from an exploit crash, use Safe Mode’s non-erasing options where appropriate, and reserve reset or reinstallation for situations where you accept the documented loss of data. There is no evidence here for a universal exploit fix or a supported downgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my PS5 jailbreak fail?
Exploit behavior depends on the exact firmware, browser stage, timing, and kernel stage. PSN.GG’s September 29, 2026 report describes Relapse as sometimes needing several browser attempts and possibly hanging or crashing at the kernel stage, but it does not diagnose every console or provide a universal success rate.
My PS5 froze after a jailbreak attempt—what should I do?
Stop attempting the exploit. If the home screen still loads, back up accessible data and observe whether ordinary functions work. If the console will not boot, enter Safe Mode using the second-beep procedure and begin with the least destructive applicable option, such as Repair Console Storage.
How do I get my PS5 out of Safe Mode?
Connect the controller with a USB data cable, press the PS button, and choose the restart option. If the console returns to Safe Mode, try Repair Console Storage for startup or storage symptoms, or Clear Cache and Rebuild Database for appropriate system-feature or performance symptoms. Contact PlayStation Repairs if supported recovery fails.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does Repair Console Storage erase PS5 data?
Sony documents Repair Console Storage as an option that does not erase data. This statement applies specifically to that option; Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) have different, destructive consequences.
What USB format and filename does a PS5 update require?
Sony’s manual procedure requires FAT32 or exFAT media, a root folder named PS5, an UPDATE subfolder, and the official file named PS5UPDATE.PUP. Follow Sony’s current instructions and use the correct package for the Safe Mode operation.
Will reinstalling PS5 software delete my data?
Yes. Sony says Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all PS5 data and removes the system software. The ordinary Reset PS5 option also deletes user data. Back up first whenever the console allows it.
Can reinstalling PS5 software downgrade the firmware?
The supported sources do not establish a firmware-downgrade procedure through reinstalling. Treat reinstallation as a destructive recovery operation, not as a way to restore exploit compatibility.
Recommended Free Tools
When should I contact PlayStation Repairs?
Contact Sony when Safe Mode recovery does not complete, the console repeatedly loops into Safe Mode, the correct official USB update is rejected, or persistent shutdown and storage symptoms remain. Provide the model, firmware version, error code, and sequence of events.
The Bottom Line
Record the exact firmware and symptom, separate an exploit crash from an official update error, and use Sony’s supported recovery path. Start with non-erasing Safe Mode options where appropriate, verify every USB filename and folder, and treat reset or reinstallation as destructive. If recovery fails, stop experimenting with unofficial files and contact PlayStation Repairs.
