If a PS5 is trapped in Safe Mode after a failed jailbreak attempt or payload, use the console’s official recovery path rather than another payload. Start with Restart PS5, Change Video Output, Repair Console Storage, cache clearing, or a database rebuild. None of those choices is designed to erase user data. A reset or system-software reinstallation is substantially more destructive, so back up saves and captures first whenever the console still allows it.
The steps below address the PS5’s documented Safe Mode and firmware-recovery behavior. Sony does not establish that any particular jailbreak exploit or payload caused a specific failure, and its support pages do not document exploit-specific unbrick methods.

Before touching anything, record the PS5’s state
Write down the exact message on screen, any error code, whether the console reaches the Safe Mode menu, and whether the DualSense is detected. This information determines which branch to follow and is useful if you later contact PlayStation Repairs.
- Note whether the PS5 powers off normally, starts directly in Safe Mode, or shows a blank screen.
- Record whether the controller works only after a wired connection.
- Keep any error code exactly as displayed, including punctuation and leading zeroes.
- Do not assume the jailbreak caused the fault. Official documentation supports general recovery but does not confirm exploit-specific causation.
How to enter PS5 Safe Mode correctly
- Turn the PS5 completely off. If it is running, hold the power button for about three seconds until the console shuts down.
- After it is off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep. The second beep occurs about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with a USB data cable. A charge-only cable may not work.
- Press the PS button on the wired controller. The Safe Mode menu should appear.
Safe Mode is an official recovery environment, not a jailbreak utility. If the menu appears, leave third-party payloads and modified firmware out of the process and work through the built-in options in order of risk.

Quick decision path
Use the symptom to choose the first operation instead of selecting options at random. A blank picture with signs that the console is running points to Change Video Output. A startup or storage warning points to Repair Console Storage. Features that misbehave or a sudden performance drop point to Clear System Software Cache. A stale game icon or inconsistent content listing points to Rebuild Database. A console that repeatedly returns to Safe Mode needs the full 20-minute power removal before you retry the menu. Only move to an official update, reset, or reinstall after these lower-impact steps have been attempted.
Do not interrupt a storage repair or database rebuild simply because the screen appears unchanged for a while. Keep the console on a stable power source and allow the operation to finish.
Choose the least-destructive Safe Mode option first
| Safe Mode choice | User data | Changes system software? | USB required? | Best use and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restart PS5 | Preserved | No | No | Exits Safe Mode and attempts a normal start; fully reversible. |
| Change Video Output | Preserved | No | No | Use Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode for a blank or incompatible display; reversible. |
| Repair Console Storage | Preserved; Sony documents that this option does not erase data. | No | No | For startup or storage problems; reversible. |
| Clear System Software Cache | Preserved | No | No | For system-feature problems or a noticeable performance drop; reversible. |
| Rebuild Database | Preserved | No | No | Scans the drive and creates a fresh content index, useful when an old game icon or other content entry remains; reversible. |
| Restore Default Settings | Games, apps, captures, and saved data remain, but settings return to defaults. | No | No | For configuration problems; you must set preferences again. |
| Update System Software | Normally preserved | Yes, installs an official update | No for a direct download; yes for the USB method | For an interrupted or overdue official update; use only Sony’s software. |
| Reset PS5 | Deleted | Returns the console to its reset state | No | Destructive troubleshooting step; back up first. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Deleted | Removes the PS5 system software | Yes | Last resort when ordinary recovery and updating fail; destructive and not reversible without reinstalling. |
Restart PS5
Select Restart PS5 once after entering Safe Mode. This simply leaves the recovery environment and tests whether the console can boot normally. If it returns immediately to Safe Mode, do not keep repeating the same restart; move to storage, cache, or database repair.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Change Video Output
Use Change Video Output when the PS5 may be running but the television shows no usable picture. Try Change Resolution first. If the display chain is rejecting the signal, try Change HDCP Mode. These choices alter video negotiation, not games, saves, or system files.
Repair Console Storage
Repair Console Storage is the documented non-erasing choice for startup or storage symptoms. Sony explicitly states that this option does not erase data. Let the process complete without removing power. A forced shutdown during storage repair can create a separate filesystem problem.
Clear System Software Cache
Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then Clear System Software Cache when system features behave incorrectly or performance has dropped. Cache clearing removes temporary system information; it is not a user-data reset.
Rebuild Database
Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database followed by Rebuild Database when content listings are stale or inconsistent. Sony gives a stale game icon as an example. The PS5 scans the internal drive and creates a new content database. The scan can take time, so leave the console connected to power until it finishes.

Restore Default Settings
Restore Default Settings returns preferences to their defaults while retaining content such as installed games, applications, captures, and saved data. Expect to configure network, display, power, and other preferences again. This is different from Reset PS5, which deletes user data.
Back up what you can before destructive choices
If the PS5 can boot far enough to open its normal menus, copy important saves or captures to the storage destination available to you, including a compatible USB backup or cloud storage where your account and subscription permit it. A backup made after the failure is still useful, but it cannot recover files that the console can no longer read. Do not start a reset merely to test whether it works; once user data is deleted, the non-destructive options cannot restore it.
Make a note of installed games and applications before reinstalling. Reinstallation removes user data and the installed system software, so you should expect to download system updates and games again and redo console settings. Keep the account credentials needed to sign back in available.
Fix a PS5 that keeps returning to Safe Mode
A repeated Safe Mode loop needs a complete power discharge before you try the menu again.

- Remove the power cable from the console or wall outlet.
- Leave it disconnected for 20 minutes. Do not shorten this interval when troubleshooting a loop.
- Reconnect the cable and power on normally.
- If Safe Mode appears again, select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then Clear System Software Cache, and confirm with OK.
If the loop continues after cache clearing, return to Safe Mode and work through Repair Console Storage and Rebuild Database before considering an update. A loop alone does not prove that a particular jailbreak payload damaged the console.
What to do when Safe Mode will not appear
If you cannot reach the menu, the problem may be the connection between the console, controller, display, or power source rather than the software state.
- Try a different USB data cable for the DualSense, then repeat the two-beep entry sequence.
- Try a different HDMI cable or television input if the console may be entering Safe Mode but the screen is blank.
- Try a different power cable if available and safe for the PS5’s region and model.
- Perform the complete 20-minute power removal described for a Safe Mode loop.
- Attempt Safe Mode again: power off, hold the button until the second beep, connect the controller by USB, and press PS.
A USB cable that only supplies power can charge the DualSense while failing to carry the data connection Safe Mode needs. If one cable does not let the PS button work, test another known-good data cable rather than repeatedly pressing the console button. Likewise, a different HDMI lead or display input can distinguish a display-negotiation problem from a console that never entered Safe Mode.

If the screen remains blank or the console never responds after those cable tests and the power cycle, use the official PlayStation Repairs path. Avoid repeatedly interrupting startup or applying unverified files while the hardware fault is unresolved.
Update official system software before reinstalling
Safe Mode includes Update System Software. An update is relevant when the PS5 has been offline for a long period or a previous official update failed.
Direct update
Use the Safe Mode update option’s direct-download method when the console can reach the network and the update process starts normally. Keep the PS5 powered and connected until the installation finishes. Do not remove the network connection or power while the update is writing system files.
USB update
Use the USB method when the console cannot complete a network update. Follow Sony’s current update instructions and use the official file only. Do not substitute a random payload, modified firmware image, or file from an unverified source. The support material documents official update and reinstall paths, not jailbreak recovery files.
If an official update succeeds, restart the PS5 and test normal startup before attempting any more invasive option. An update is not the same as Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software): the latter removes the installed software and deletes user data.

Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all user data and removes the PS5 system software. Sony describes reinstallation as a last troubleshooting step. Use it only after non-destructive recovery, the 20-minute power cycle, cable checks, and an official update have failed.
Prepare the USB drive
- On a PC or Mac, format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting erases the contents already on that drive, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- Create a folder in the root of the drive named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a second folder namedUPDATE. - Download the official PS5 reinstallation file and save it in
PS5/UPDATE. - Rename the file exactly to
PS5UPDATE.PUP. The folder names and filename are case-sensitive in practice; use the uppercase spelling shown.
Do not place the file inside an additional download or user-name folder. In the final layout, the removable drive should show PS5 at its root, UPDATE inside that folder, and PS5UPDATE.PUP inside UPDATE. Keep other files off the drive while troubleshooting recognition.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Run the reinstall
- Connect the prepared USB drive to the PS5.
- Start Safe Mode by powering the console off, holding the power button until the second beep, connecting the DualSense with USB, and pressing PS.
- Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Read the warning and confirm only when you accept complete user-data loss and removal of the installed system software.
- Leave the USB drive connected and do not interrupt power until the process finishes and the console restarts.
If the PS5 does not recognize the file
- Confirm the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, not a filesystem the PS5 cannot read in Safe Mode.
- Check that
PS5is at the USB root and thatUPDATEis inside it. - Check the exact filename:
PS5UPDATE.PUP, with no extra extension such as.PUP.pup. - Download the official reinstallation file again if the download may be incomplete.
- Try another compatible USB drive if the structure and filename are correct.
Formatting the drive again can remove hidden files or an incorrect partition format, but it also erases the drive. Verify the download and folder names on the computer before inserting it into the PS5. If multiple correctly prepared drives are rejected, stop changing files and contact PlayStation Repairs rather than trying unofficial firmware.
Understand the data-loss boundaries
Back up to USB or cloud storage before any destructive choice whenever the PS5 still permits access. A backup made after the failure is better than no backup, but some saves or captures may not be recoverable if the console cannot boot or the storage is damaged.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Restore Default Settings changes preferences but retains games, apps, captures, and saved data.
- Destructive choice: Reset PS5 deletes user data.
- Most destructive choice: Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes user data and removes the installed system software.
Do not select either reset option merely because the console entered Safe Mode once. Reserve them for a continuing failure after the documented lower-impact steps and an official support escalation have been considered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What official recovery can and cannot establish about a jailbreak failure
The Safe Mode procedures can repair storage structures, clear temporary system data, rebuild the content index, change video output, update official software, or reinstall the operating system. They do not identify which exploit, payload, firmware vulnerability, or modified component caused a failure.
No official source cited for these procedures publishes jailbreak success rates, brick rates, firmware percentages, or recovery probabilities. Treat claims that a particular payload is guaranteed to unbrick a specific firmware version as unverified unless you have separate, reliable technical evidence. Mixing an unofficial payload with an official reinstall file can make diagnosis harder and may create additional incompatibilities.
When to stop troubleshooting and request service
Use PlayStation Repairs when the PS5 still cannot display Safe Mode after trying another USB, HDMI, and power cable, completing the 20-minute power removal, and repeating the two-beep procedure. Also seek service when the console shuts down unexpectedly, reports persistent storage errors after repair and database rebuild, or cannot read a correctly prepared official reinstallation drive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Repair Console Storage delete my PS5 games or saves?
Sony documents Repair Console Storage as a non-erasing option. It is intended for startup or storage problems, although you should still avoid interrupting the process and keep backups whenever possible.
How do I get out of a PS5 Safe Mode loop?
Hold the power button until the console turns off, disconnect power for 20 minutes, reconnect it, and start again. If Safe Mode returns, choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then Clear System Software Cache and select OK.
What if my DualSense is not detected in Safe Mode?
Connect it with a USB data cable and press PS. If that fails, try another USB cable; a charge-only cable may not carry the data connection Safe Mode requires.
Does Rebuild Database erase installed games?
Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new content database. It is listed among the lower-impact, non-erasing recovery choices, unlike Reset PS5.
Should I choose Reset PS5 or reinstall system software?
Both are destructive. Reset PS5 deletes user data, while Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes user data and removes the installed system software. Back up first and use them only after lower-impact recovery and an official update fail.
Why does my PS5 show a blank screen in Safe Mode?
Try Change Video Output, especially Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode. If Safe Mode still cannot be seen, test another HDMI cable or display input, then perform the 20-minute power removal.
What USB format and filename does a reinstall require?
Use a FAT32 or exFAT drive with folders named PS5 and UPDATE, then place the official file at PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. Check the uppercase spelling and ensure there is no extra file extension.
Recommended Free Tools
Can an official reinstall unbrick every jailbreak failure?
No guarantee is established. Sony documents general Safe Mode and firmware recovery, not exploit-specific unbrick procedures. If the documented steps fail, use PlayStation Repairs.
The Bottom Line
Use Safe Mode as a measured recovery ladder: enter it with the second-beep method and a wired DualSense, try video, storage, cache, and database options first, and allow the full 20-minute power cycle for a loop. Back up before any reset. An official USB reinstall using PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP is the final software step, not a jailbreak tool; persistent failure belongs with PlayStation Repairs.
