Choose a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD if you want extra space where PS5 games remain ready to launch. Choose a USB extended-storage drive if your priority is inexpensive archiving, freeing the console’s built-in space, or playing PS4 games directly from the drive. PS5 games stored on USB cannot launch there; they must be copied back to the console or an installed M.2 SSD first.
On a PS5, “internal SSD” in this comparison means a user-installed M.2 expansion SSD. It supplements the console’s built-in SSD; it does not replace it. An external USB drive is a separate storage device connected to a USB port.

The short answer
| Question | Compatible M.2 SSD | USB extended storage |
|---|---|---|
| Can PS5 games launch directly from it? | Yes, after the SSD is installed and formatted. | No. Copy the game back to console or M.2 storage first. |
| Can PS4 games launch directly from it? | Yes. | Yes. |
| Best role | Permanent expansion for a playable PS5 and PS4 library. | Archive for PS5 games, or external playable storage for PS4 games. |
| Main compatibility check | PCIe generation, NVMe type, key, capacity, physical dimensions and heat dissipation. | SuperSpeed USB rating, capacity, connection method and console compatibility. |
| Main inconvenience | Requires buying and physically installing a compatible M.2 module. | Every archived PS5 game needs a copy-back operation before play. |
Sony describes these as different solutions rather than one universal winner. Its storage overview and PS5 expandable-storage information both present M.2 storage for keeping games playable and USB storage for storing games that are not currently in use.

PS5 games stay playable in place
Once a PS5 title is installed on the M.2 volume, you can start it from that location without first moving it to the built-in SSD. This is the decisive advantage for anyone who regularly rotates several large PS5 games. You still need enough free space for updates and temporary installation operations, but the game itself does not require a transfer back before launch.
PS4 games work there too
PS4 installations can be stored and launched from an M.2 SSD just as they can from the console’s primary storage. If you own both generations of games, one M.2 expansion can serve both libraries instead of reserving the USB drive for older titles.
Installation is the trade-off
An M.2 purchase is not plug-and-play. The module must fit the PS5’s expansion bay, meet Sony’s electrical and physical requirements, be installed with the console powered down, and be formatted by the console. Follow the current installation guide for your exact PS5 revision; do not assume that a generic desktop M.2 module will fit or dissipate heat safely.

What USB extended storage can and cannot do
A USB hard drive or USB SSD is useful when the goal is to hold games away from the console’s internal space. Sony’s support page states plainly: “PlayStation®5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage, so make sure to copy PS5® game data back to your console storage when you want to play the game again.” See Sony’s USB extended-storage requirements and instructions.
PS5 games are archived, not launched
You can move or copy a PS5 installation to USB to free space on the console. The title remains available in your library, but selecting it will not launch the USB copy. You must copy it to the built-in SSD or an installed M.2 SSD, wait for that operation to finish, and then play it. This is usually more convenient than downloading the entire game again, but it adds a transfer step every time you return to an archived title.

PS4 games can run directly from USB
PS4 games are the exception. They can be played directly from USB extended storage, making a compatible external drive a practical expansion for a large PS4 collection. If your library is mostly PS4 software, the USB limitation may not matter.
USB devices have explicit limits
Sony specifies SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or faster, a capacity of at least 250 GB and no more than 8 TB. The console does not guarantee that every drive meeting those headline numbers will work, so retain the receipt and check compatibility for the exact model. Sony also says not to connect the extended-storage drive through a USB hub and allows only one USB extended-storage drive to be in use at a time.
M.2 requirements you must verify before buying
The exact requirements depend on the console revision. For example, Sony’s CFI-71XX safety guide lists the following for that model family: PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, Key M, capacities from 250 GB to 8 TB, and supported module sizes 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110. The guide also constrains the total dimensions of the module and its heat-dissipation mechanism. Read the current Sony documentation for your own model rather than treating the CFI-71XX list as universal. The model-specific guide is available as a Sony PS5 CFI-71XX safety PDF.
Use this M.2 checklist
- Interface: PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, where required by your model’s current Sony specification.
- Keying: Key M rather than a physically incompatible key arrangement.
- Capacity: Within the minimum and maximum stated for your model; the cited CFI-71XX guide lists 250 GB to 8 TB.
- Physical size: The module length and width must match a supported 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 format where those sizes apply.
- Heat management: Include a heatsink or other heat-dissipation solution only when its combined dimensions remain within Sony’s clearance limits.
- Console model: Confirm the model number and consult the latest Sony installation page before ordering.
Do not infer suitability from a product’s name alone. A drive can be electrically fast enough yet fail the size or heatsink-clearance requirement.
USB requirements and safe handling
Capacity and connection
- Use a SuperSpeed USB connection rated at 5 Gbps or later.
- Choose 250 GB to 8 TB of capacity.
- Connect the drive directly to the PS5, not through a USB hub.
- Only one USB extended-storage drive can be active at a time.
These are Sony’s published boundaries, not a guarantee for every commercial model. A drive that disconnects, is formatted in an unsupported way or draws more power than the port can reliably provide may not be accepted.

Never unplug an active drive
Disconnecting USB storage while it is being read or written can cause data loss, corruption or damage to the console or drive. Stop transfers and use the PS5’s safe-removal command before unplugging. If the console reports that the drive was not removed correctly, reconnect it and allow the system to check it before attempting another transfer.

Choose M.2 when you want a permanently playable PS5 library
An M.2 expansion is the better choice if you frequently switch among PS5 games, want to keep new releases installed, or dislike waiting for a title to copy from USB before every session. It also provides one playable location for mixed PS5 and PS4 installations, subject to the drive’s usable capacity.
Choose USB when you mainly archive PS5 games
USB extended storage is sensible when you finish games and rarely return to them, have a limited console budget, or want to preserve a downloaded installation rather than redownload it. It frees the built-in SSD while accepting the copy-back delay when you resume a PS5 game.
Choose USB when your collection is mostly PS4
Because PS4 games launch directly from USB, an external drive can be all the expansion you need for a PS4-heavy library. You can reserve the internal and M.2 locations for PS5 games that require them.
Use both when your library has two different patterns
Many owners get the most useful arrangement by keeping regularly played PS5 titles on M.2, placing completed PS5 titles on USB, and running PS4 games from USB. Remember that the PS5 supports only one USB extended-storage drive in use at a time; swapping drives is not a substitute for simultaneous expansion.

How to manage games on each drive
Move a PS5 game to USB for archiving
- Connect the compatible USB drive directly to the PS5 and complete the console’s format prompt if it is a new drive. Formatting erases existing content on that drive, so copy personal files elsewhere first.
- Open your game library and highlight the installed PS5 title.
- Open the title’s Options menu and choose the storage or move/copy command offered by the console.
- Select USB extended storage as the destination and confirm. Wait until the transfer finishes before disconnecting the drive.
The game will remain listed in your library, but its USB copy cannot launch until you move it back.
Restore an archived PS5 game
- Connect the same USB drive directly to the console.
- In the game library, highlight the PS5 game stored on USB.
- Open the Options menu and select the command to copy or move the game to console storage or M.2 storage.
- Wait for the copy to complete, then start the game from its new location.
Sony describes this workflow as transferring the title back to the internal SSD through the Options Menu in the Library. The destination can be the built-in SSD or a compatible installed M.2 expansion, depending on the available space and your storage settings.
Install and use an M.2 expansion
- Identify your PS5 model and read the current Sony M.2 installation instructions for that revision.
- Buy a module that meets the interface, capacity, size and heat-dissipation requirements for that model.
- Power down the console completely, install the module according to Sony’s hardware guide, and close the cover before reconnecting power.
- Start the PS5 and follow the on-screen prompt to format the new M.2 storage. Formatting removes data already on the module.
- Use the storage-management controls to choose where new games are installed or to move existing PS5 and PS4 games onto the M.2 volume.
If the console does not detect the module, turn it off and recheck seating, dimensions and heatsink clearance against the official guide. Do not force a module into the bay.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Game installations are not the same as saved data
A drive that stores game installations is not automatically a complete backup of your saves. Sony’s storage-management guidance separates PS5 and PS4 game data, saved data and capture files, and assigns them different supported locations.
- PS5 and PS4 game installations can use console storage, M.2 storage and (with the PS5 playability limitation described above) USB extended storage.
- Cloud storage is used for saved data when the stated PlayStation Plus requirement is met.
- USB storage supports PS4 saved data and capture files under Sony’s stated conditions; that does not make a USB game archive a backup of every PS5 save.
Before deleting a local installation, verify that your saves are synchronized or copied using Sony’s specific save-data procedure. Reinstalling a game and restoring a save are separate operations.

Performance, capacity and cost: what can—and cannot—be concluded
The official material establishes compatibility and launch rules, not a controlled comparison of real-world transfer speeds. Therefore, it is not accurate to promise that one category is universally faster in every game or copy test. A USB SSD may transfer faster than a USB hard drive, and an M.2 product may have different published specifications from another, but those product-level results require model-specific testing.
For a purchase decision, compare the drive’s usable capacity, published performance class, dimensions and heat solution (for M.2), warranty and current price. No single current price or independent benchmark applies to every model, region or sale period.
Common mistakes and fixes
“My PS5 game appears on USB but will not start.”
This is expected behavior, not necessarily a failed drive. Copy the PS5 game to console or M.2 storage before launching it.

“The console rejects my M.2 SSD.”
Check the exact PS5 model, PCIe/NVMe specification, Key M requirement, capacity, module length and the combined height of the heatsink. A desktop M.2 that works in a PC can still be incompatible with the PS5 bay.
“The USB drive keeps disconnecting.”
Connect it directly rather than through a hub, check the cable and port, confirm that the drive meets the SuperSpeed and capacity limits, and avoid using it while the console is being moved. Safely remove it before changing connections.
“I deleted the game and lost my progress.”
Game installation data and saved data are separate. Check cloud synchronization or the appropriate PS4 USB-save procedure before deleting anything, and consult Sony’s save-data instructions for your account and console.
Buying checklist
| If your priority is… | Buy or use… | Verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Launching PS5 games from the added space | Compatible M.2 NVMe SSD | Your console model’s current PCIe, Key M, capacity, dimensions and heat-dissipation rules. |
| Keeping finished PS5 games without redownloading | USB extended-storage drive | SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later, 250 GB–8 TB, direct connection and one-drive-at-a-time limitation. |
| Playing PS4 games externally | USB extended-storage drive | Direct connection, supported formatting and reliable cable/port operation. |
| Using one location for active PS5 and PS4 games | Compatible M.2 NVMe SSD | Usable capacity after formatting and sufficient heat clearance. |
Bottom line for most PS5 owners
If “storing” means keeping a PS5 game installed and immediately playable, choose a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD. If it means moving games off the console until you want them again, a USB extended-storage drive is appropriate—and it is also the direct-play option for PS4 games. The practical decision is therefore about workflow: pay for an installed, compatible M.2 expansion to eliminate the PS5 copy-back step, or accept that step in exchange for a flexible USB archive.
