PS5 Games Look Blurry or Oversharpened? How to Troubleshoot Upscaling

If your PS5 games look blurry or too sharp on a 4K TV, first check whether the problem affects one game or every game—and whether you see soft detail, exaggerated edges, flicker, or the wrong output mode. Compare one fixed scene while changing one setting at a time: a console output setting cannot make every game render natively at 4K, and a new HDMI cable will not fix blur created by a game or the TV’s picture processing.

Start by identifying what looks wrong

Before changing settings, narrow down the symptom. Check the same scene from the same viewing position, and note whether the issue appears during gameplay, in menus, or both.

  • Soft or blurry detail: Check the game’s graphics mode, the console’s actual output signal, and the TV’s scaling and picture processing.
  • Halos or unnaturally crisp edges: Check for TV sharpness or edge-enhancement processing, and—on PS5 Pro in a compatible game—test the PSSR image-quality setting.
  • Flicker, a blank screen, or an unexpectedly low resolution or refresh rate: Investigate the HDMI connection and display compatibility before treating it as an image-rendering issue.
  • One game looks different from another: The games may use different rendering and reconstruction methods. Compare that title’s available graphics modes rather than assuming the console applies one universal upscaling setting.

Take a photo or make a note of the original appearance before testing. Restore a setting if the comparison shows no improvement.

Check the PS5’s actual output signal

Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and check the connected display information and current video output signal. Sony says the PS5 detects the connected TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the highest resolution it supports. Keep Resolution on Automatic as a baseline; if a 4K-capable display is not receiving the expected mode, confirm the display’s supported input and try 2160p. Sony’s instructions are in How to change PS5 console resolution.

#1 Best Overall
PlayStation®5 Digital Edition (slim)
  • Model Number CFI-2000
  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

A 2160p output signal does not establish that a particular game renders every frame natively at 4K. The game may render at a different resolution and reconstruct or scale the image, so a correct console output reading does not by itself explain softness or oversharpening.

If you use a 1440p display

Use Test 1440p Output in the console’s video output settings to check support for SDR and HDR at 60 Hz and 120 Hz, as well as VRR. Select 1440p if that is the intended output and supported by the display. Sony documents these checks in its PS5 resolution guidance.

Do not select 8K as a blur fix

8K output is limited to PS5 Pro (CFI-7000 model-group) consoles and requires a compatible display, 60 Hz support, and Display Stream Compression (DSC). It is not a general remedy for a soft-looking 4K image. Check Sony’s resolution and display requirements before changing to 8K.

Compare the game’s graphics modes

If a game offers Performance and Resolution modes, compare them in the same scene. Sony describes Performance Mode as prioritizing smoother motion and Resolution Mode as providing higher graphic quality. The exact rendering resolution, frame rate, and image-processing trade-off depend on the game; the preset labels are not a guarantee that every title behaves identically. See Sony’s guidance on PS5 game presets.

Some games also offer their own graphics options. Use the names and explanations shown in that game’s current menu or official documentation; options vary by title. If softness appears only in one mode, that comparison is more useful than changing the PS5’s global output settings without evidence of a signal mismatch.

Use the right PS5 Pro image-quality setting

PS5 Pro has two separate enhancement features that apply to different software. Neither is a universal sharpness control.

PSSR-compatible PS5 games

On a PS5 Pro (CFI-7000 model group), open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality. Sony says this control is on by default and applies to certain PSSR-compatible games. If the complaint occurs in a supported game, compare the same scene with the setting in its other state. If there is no improvement, restore the original state. Availability and behavior are described in Sony’s PS5 video output guidance.

PS4 games on PS5 Pro

Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games is a separate feature, not the PSSR control for PS5 games. It applies to PS4 games on CFI-7000 consoles and requires a display that supports 2160p or 1440p at 60 Hz. Sony advises turning it off if gameplay behaves unexpectedly. Check TV or monitor picture processing

Display manufacturers use different names and scales for controls such as sharpness, scaling, noise reduction, edge enhancement, and game mode. Consult the manual for your exact display and input; Sony also directs users to the display manufacturer for settings needed to receive high-resolution signals. Do not assume that a sharpness value of zero—or any other number—is correct across brands and models. Change one control at a time and compare the same scene. See Sony’s PS5 picture and sound troubleshooting.

Also check whether the selected HDMI input requires a high-bandwidth or enhanced-format option for the resolution and refresh rate you want. The label and behavior are model-specific, so use the display manual rather than a generic menu path.

Change RGB Range or HDR only for a suspected mismatch

Sony says to change RGB Range only when an HDMI device is not sending RGB range information correctly. For HDR output, Always On converts unsupported games and apps to HDR output, while On When Supported leaves unsupported content in SDR. These settings are targeted checks for a range or HDR mismatch, not general fixes for blur or oversharpening. Sony explains them in its video output settings guidance.

Isolate the HDMI path when the signal is unstable

A cable or port test is worthwhile when the image flickers, the display loses signal, or the PS5 does not report the expected resolution or refresh rate. It is not a likely fix for stable softness caused by game rendering or TV sharpening.

  1. Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor, temporarily removing an AV receiver, soundbar, or other device between them.
  2. Confirm that the cable is connected to the display’s port that supports the mode you want, and check for display firmware updates.
  3. Try another suitable HDMI port and, if available, another known-good cable. Sony recommends the included HDMI 2.1 cable for PS5 high-performance features; older cables may also work, depending on the mode.
  4. For 4K at 120 Hz, use the included cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for that output. Check the display’s specifications and input settings as well as the cable rating.
  5. If the picture flickers, try Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2. These options limit output to address instability, which can also restrict high-bandwidth formats. Sony lists this and other connection checks in its picture and sound troubleshooting steps.

If 4K/120 Hz is blank or appears as 1080p/120 Hz, verify that the display supports the mode, the firmware is current, the correct HDMI 2.1-capable port is in use, and the PS5’s resolution and transfer-rate settings are appropriate. Sony’s PS5 resolution guide covers compatible output modes.
