No first-party source publishes a universal percentage gain or Mbps target for these steps. The practical objective is to remove the specific bottleneck—an outage, failed download job, full storage, outdated software, weak wireless signal or unstable home network—without changing settings that are unrelated to the fault.

Use this order before changing advanced settings
- Check the service. Look at the PlayStation status page for an outage or scheduled maintenance. A server-side problem cannot be fixed by changing your console’s DNS or Wi‑Fi channel.
- Restart the download job. Open Downloads/Uploads, select the game, and choose Pause, then Resume. Sony’s support instruction is: “Select Pause and Resume to restart.”
- Run the PS5 test. Go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Record whether the console reports a connection failure before changing anything else.
- Check local capacity and software. Open Settings > Storage and make sure the console has enough free space for the title. Then go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and install an available update.
- Try Ethernet. Connect the PS5 directly to the router with a LAN cable. Sony recommends a wired connection where possible and notes in the PS5 Quick Start Guide: “For a wired connection to the internet, use a LAN cable (not included).”
- Improve Wi‑Fi if necessary. Move the console closer to the router, remove obstructions and sources of interference, and restart the router or modem correctly.
- Configure Rest Mode only after the connection works. Enable the internet and automatic-download options described below if you want downloads to continue while you are away.
- Escalate a persistent failure. Restart both devices, retry the item, and use Safe Mode cache or database tools only when the normal download controls do not resolve it.
This sequence moves from a service check to a single-download retry, then to console, cable and wireless changes. It also gives you a clear before-and-after comparison: if the download improves as soon as Ethernet is connected, the wireless path—not the game file or PS5 storage—was the likely constraint.
Check whether the problem is PlayStation or your download
Look for an outage or maintenance window
Open the official PlayStation service-status page before spending time on router configuration. If the store, game downloads or account services are degraded, a slow transfer can affect many users at once. Wait for the service to recover and retry rather than repeatedly deleting the same item.

Pause and resume the current item
From Downloads/Uploads, highlight the game and select Pause. Select it again and choose Resume. This is Sony’s first-line way to restart a stalled transfer while preserving the item and its current state.
Cancel and redownload only when necessary
If pausing and resuming does not clear an error, choose Cancel and Delete. Then open Game Library, find the title and start the download again. This is more disruptive than a pause because the failed item is removed and the transfer begins again, so use it after the less destructive retry has failed.
Verify the PS5 before troubleshooting the network
Run the built-in connection test
Navigate to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. The test confirms whether the console can reach the network and reports the connection details the PS5 can measure. A successful test does not prove that every game server is fast, but a failed test gives you a local-network problem to solve first.

Open Settings > Storage and check available space against the game’s requirement. A download can fail or stop when the console cannot reserve enough room for the content. Free space before retrying, then return to Game Library and start the title again if you canceled it.

Install the current system software
Use Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Apply any offered update, allow the console to restart if requested, and retry the download afterward. Keeping system software current removes compatibility problems that can look like a network failure.
Wired Ethernet versus Wi‑Fi
A direct cable is the most informative network test because it removes radio interference and distance from the path between the PS5 and router. Wi‑Fi is more convenient, but its performance depends on placement, walls, competing devices and the router’s wireless conditions.

Test with a LAN cable
Use a cable long enough to reach the PS5 without a strained connector. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a practical choice for a direct router connection, but the important diagnostic change is the wired link itself. After connecting it, select the wired network option on the PS5 if prompted and run Test Internet Connection again.
If the download becomes reliable on Ethernet, leave the console wired when possible or treat Wi‑Fi coverage as the issue to solve. If it remains slow on Ethernet, look back at service status, the individual download item, storage, system software and the router or internet connection rather than assuming a new wireless device will help.

Improve Wi‑Fi conditions without replacing the router
Reduce distance and obstructions
Sony advises bringing the PS5 closer to the router and removing objects that block or interfere with the wireless signal. Place the console where the router has a clearer path; avoid enclosing either device in a cabinet or positioning them behind dense furniture or other large obstacles.
Restart the router or modem correctly
Power off the router or modem, wait at least five minutes, and power it back on. Give the network time to reconnect before restarting the PS5 download. A short off-and-on cycle may leave the original fault in place; the five-minute wait is the interval specified in Sony’s network troubleshooting guidance.
Check router firmware
If the router manufacturer offers a firmware update, install it according to that device’s instructions. Firmware can address stability and compatibility problems, although the update itself does not promise a particular download rate. Do not change several router settings at once: making one change and retesting shows which action mattered.
Decide whether a router upgrade is justified
A new router or mesh system is a coverage and capacity decision, not an automatic PS5 speed fix. First compare the PS5 on Ethernet with the PS5 on Wi‑Fi in the same location. If Ethernet is consistently usable but Wi‑Fi is not, coverage, placement or interference is a plausible target. If both paths fail in the same way, verify the internet service and PlayStation status before buying hardware.

Enable downloads in Rest Mode
Rest Mode can keep a download running while you are away, but only when the console is allowed to remain connected and the relevant automatic-update controls are enabled. Sony’s guidance is: “To download games while in rest mode, set your console to stay connected to the internet.”
Keep the internet connection active
- Open Settings > System > Power Saving.
- Select Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Put the PS5 into Rest Mode after starting or scheduling the download.
Choose automatic download and install behavior
- Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Open Automatic Updates.
- Enable Auto-Download or Auto-Install in Rest Mode, according to the behavior you want.
These options are separate decisions. Auto-Download lets the console fetch available content while unattended; Auto-Install in Rest Mode also permits installation there. If you want downloads to occur without giving the console permission to install every update automatically, enable downloading and leave automatic installation off.

Restart the console and network
After checking status, storage and software, restart the PS5. Restart the router or modem as described above, wait for its connection to return, and retry the download. This clears temporary state without immediately deleting the game item or changing advanced network values.

Use Safe Mode cache tools for persistent failures
When a download remains stuck after a normal restart and retry, start the PS5 in Safe Mode and select Clear System Software Cache. Sony also documents Rebuild Database as an option for system-feature or content-index problems. These are escalation steps, not routine speed settings: use them when the symptom persists and the ordinary Downloads/Uploads controls have not worked.

Choose the least disruptive Safe Mode option that matches the symptom. A cache clear targets temporary system data; database rebuilding addresses indexing or system-feature problems. Neither is a substitute for free storage, a working internet connection or an available PlayStation service.
DNS, static IP and port settings: targeted fixes, not speed hacks
Sony’s advanced network-error guidance includes DNS changes, static-IP configuration and port settings for specific connection failures. They can help when an error points to name resolution, address assignment or blocked traffic, but there is no first-party guarantee that changing them will increase download Mbps.
When to consider DNS
Consider a DNS change only when the PS5 reports a connection or name-resolution problem, or when Sony’s instructions for your exact error call for it. Record the original DNS values first so you can restore them. If the connection test already succeeds and the download is merely slow, changing DNS is unlikely to address a congested service, weak Wi‑Fi signal or limited internet plan.

A static IP is a troubleshooting measure for address-assignment or port-forwarding scenarios. It adds configuration work and can create conflicts if the address is not chosen correctly. Save the original automatic settings before switching, and revert if the connection becomes less reliable.
When port configuration is appropriate
Port changes belong to a documented error path or a known router restriction, not a general download-optimization checklist. Incorrect forwarding can expose services or send traffic to the wrong device. If you do not have a specific error and a documented set of values for your network, leave the ports unchanged.
Choose the least disruptive fix for the symptom

What the available evidence does—and does not—promise
Wired networking, better router placement, a clean restart and Rest Mode configuration remove common causes of failed or inconsistent transfers. They do not create bandwidth that your internet service or the PlayStation content server does not provide. Sony’s first-party material reviewed for these fixes publishes no universal improvement percentage, minimum Mbps target or guaranteed time reduction.
Use the PS5 connection test and a repeatable comparison instead: run the same download with the console in its normal Wi‑Fi position, then test with Ethernet or a closer router position. Note whether the transfer progresses, stops or fails. That observation tells you whether to keep working on the local network or return to the service, storage and software checks.
